Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

1

Why this answer is correct

Formula used:

a3 + b3 + c3 - 3abc = (a + b +c)(a2 + b2 + c2 - ab - bc - ac)

Calculation:

a2 - bc = α  ] × a

a3 - abc = aα        ------(1)

b2 - ac = β  ] × b

b3 - abc = bβ        ------(2)

c2 - ab = γ  ] × c

c3 - abc = cγ        ------(3)

Adding equation (1),(2) and (3)

a3 + b3 + c3 - 3abc = aα + bβ + cγ

a2 - bc + b2 - ac + c2 - ab = α +  β +  γ

⇒ aα+bβ+cγ(a+b+c)(α+β+γ)\rm \frac{a \alpha+b \beta+c \gamma}{(a+b+c)(\alpha+\beta+\gamma)} = a3+b3+c3−3abc(a+b+c)(a2+b2+c2−ab−bc−ca)\frac{a^3 + b^3 +c^3 -3abc}{(a+b+c)(a^2 +b^2 +c^2 - ab - bc -ca)}

∴ a3+b3+c3−3abca3+b3+c3−3abc\frac{a^3 + b^3 +c^3 -3abc}{a^3 + b^3 +c^3 -3abc} = 1

Question 2

If (x - 1)3 is a factor of x4 + αx3 +  βx2 + γx - 1, then the other factor will be:

  1. AOption (a)

    x + 1

  2. BOption (b)

    x - 3

  3. COption (c)

    x + 2

  4. DOption (d)

    x

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

x + 1

Why this answer is correct

Calculation:

(x - 1)3 = x3 - 3x2 + 3x - 1

∴ Other factor will be x + 1

Confusion PointsFocus only on the constant terms of the expression (α - 4)x3 + βx2 + (γ - 2)x. Try to find a factor to divide it by, such that subtracting it from -1 makes the expression equal to zero

Question 3

A 2-digit number is such that the sum of the number and the number obtained by reversing the order of the digits of the number is 55. Further, the difference of the given number and the number obtained by reversing the order of the digits of the number is 45. What is the product of the digits?

  1. AOption (a)

    5

  2. BOption (b)

    2

  3. COption (c)

    1

  4. DOption (d)

    0

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

0

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

⇒ 11(x + y) = 55

⇒ x + y = 5 -----(1)

⇒ 9(x - y) = 45

⇒ x - y = 5 -----(2)

From equation (1) and (2)

⇒ x × y = 5 × 0 = 0

∴ The correct answer is 0.

Solution:-

<br>

Calculation:

Let 1st digit = x & 2nd digit = y

2-digit number = 10x + y

Reversing the order of the digits of the number = 10y + x

According to question

The sum of the number and the number obtained by reversing the order of the digits of the number = 55

⇒ 10x + y + 10y + x = 55

⇒ 11x + 11y = 55

⇒ x + y = 5 ---------(1)

The difference of the given number and the number obtained by reversing the order of the digits of the number = 45

⇒ 10x + y - 10y - x = 45

⇒ 9x - 9y = 45

⇒ x - y = 5 -----------(2)

Adding Equation (1) & (2)

⇒ x + y + x - y = 10

⇒ 2x = 10 ⇒ x = 5

Put the value of x in equation (1)

⇒ 5 + y = 5 ⇒ y = 0

The product of the digits = 5 × 0 = 0

∴ The correct answer is 0.

Question 4

If A and B can finish a work in 10 days, B and C can finish the same work in 12 days, C and A can finish the same work in 15 days; then in how many days can A, B and C together finish half of the work?

  1. AOption (a)

    8 days

  2. BOption (b)

    5 days

  3. COption (c)

    4 days

  4. DOption (d)

    3 days

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

4 days

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Let Total Work be LCM of (10, 12, 15) = 60 units.

Efficiency of 2(A + B + C) = (60/10) + (60/12) + (60/15) = 6 + 5 + 4 = 15 units/day.

Combined Efficiency of (A + B + C) = 15 ÷ 2 = 7.5 units/day.

Time for Half work (30 units) = 30 ÷ 7.5 = 4 days.

∴ The correct answer is 4 days.

Alternate Method

Given:

Time taken by (A + B) = 10 days

Time taken by (B + C) = 12 days

Time taken by (C + A) = 15 days

Formula Used: Efficiency = Total Work ÷ Time

PersonDaysTotal WorkEfficiency
A + B1060 (LCM)6
B + C125
C + A154

⇒ Total Efficiency of [ (A + B) + (B + C) + (C + A) ] = 6 + 5 + 4

⇒ 2(A + B + C) = 15 units/day

⇒ Efficiency of (A + B + C) = 15 ÷ 2 = 7.5 units/day

⇒ Half of the total work = 60 ÷ 2 = 30 units

⇒ Time taken by (A + B + C) = 30 ÷ 7.5 = 4 days

∴ The correct answer is 4 days.

Additional Information

Combined Efficiency Property

When individuals work in pairs, the sum of their efficiencies represents twice the combined efficiency of all individuals: 2(A+B+C) = Σ(Pair Efficiencies).

Work and Time Relationship

Total Work = Efficiency × Time. If work is halved, for a constant efficiency, the time required will also be halved.

LCM Method

Taking the Least Common Multiple (LCM) of time durations as total work simplifies fractional calculations into integer efficiencies.

Question 5

A person borrowed Rs. 10,000 at 12% rate of interest per annum compounded quarterly for a period of 9 months. What is the interest paid by him to settle his account after 9 months?

  1. AOption (a)

    Rs. 927.27

  2. BOption (b)

    Rs. 947.47

  3. COption (c)

    Rs. 967.67

  4. DOption (d)

    Rs. 987.87

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

Rs. 927.27

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

R = 12/4 = 3% and T = 9/3 = 3 year

PrincipalAmount
1st year100103
2nd year100103
3rd year100103
Total10000001092727
<br>

Interest = (10000 / 1000000) × 92727 =  927.27

∴ The correct answer is  Rs. 927.27.

Alternate Method

Given:

Amount = Rs. 10,000

Rate,R = 12%

Time ,n  = 9 months

Concept used:

For quarterly, Rate = R/4 & Time = n × 4

Calculation:

R = 12%/4 = 3% & n = 9 × 4 = 36 months ⇒  3 years

The interest of 1st year = 10000 × 3% = 300

The interest of 2nd year = 300 + 300 × 3% = 309

The interest of 3rd year = 309 + 309 × 3% = 318.27

Total interest after 3 years = 300 + 309 + 318.27 = Rs. 927.27

∴ The correct answer is  Rs. 927.27

Question 6

For what relation between a and b is the equation sin θ=a+b2ab\theta=\frac{a+b}{2 \sqrt{a b}} possible?

  1. AOption (a)

    a = b

  2. BOption (b)

    a ≤ b

  3. COption (c)

    a ≥ b

  4. DOption (d)

    a > b

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

a = b

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Sinθ = (a + b)/2√ab

Concept:

-1 ≤ sinθ ≤ +1

Calculation:

-1 ≤ (a + b)/2√ab ≤ +1

We solve one of them

(a + b)/2√ab ≤ +1

⇒ a + b ≤ 2√ab

⇒ a + b - 2√ab ≤ 0

⇒ (√a - √b)2  ≤ 0

⇒ √a = √b = a = b

∴ The correct answer is a = b

Shortcut Trick We can solve this question by option to satisfy equation

put a = b

then Sinθ = (a + a)/ 2√(a × a)

Sinθ = 2a/2a = 1 (sinθ ≤ 1)

Question 7

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

2

Why this answer is correct

Given:

A, B, and C together can do a piece of work in 36 days

A and B together can do five times as much work as C alone

B and C together can do as much work as A alone

Calculation:

Ratios of Efficiency

(A + B) : C = 5 : 1

⇒ A + B = 5a, C = a --(1)

⇒ A + B + C = 6a

(B + C) : A = 1 : 1

⇒ (B + C) = a, A = a

⇒ A + B + C = 2a

Efficiency should be equal so

 A + B + C = 2a × 3 = 6a  now

 (B + C) = 3a, A = 3a --(2)

By solving (1) and (2)

A = 3a , C = a and B = 3a - a = 2a

Efficiency of (A + C) = n(B)

(3a + a) = n × 2a

n = 4a/2a = 2

∴ The correct answer is n = 2

Question 8

If 2a3=4b5=3c4\frac{2 a}{3}=\frac{4 b}{5}=\frac{3 c}{4}, then what is the value of 18aa2+c2−b2\frac{18}{a} \sqrt{a^2+c^2-b^2}?

  2. BOption (b)

    355\sqrt{355}

  3. COption (c)

    375\sqrt{375}

  4. DOption (d)

    3153 \sqrt{15}

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

355\sqrt{355}

Why this answer is correct

Given:

2a/3 = 4b/5 =  3c/4

Calculation:

LCM of numerator value (2, 4, 3) is 12

(2a3=4b5=3c4)(\frac{2 a}{3}=\frac{4 b}{5}=\frac{3 c}{4}) × 112\frac{1}{12}

a/18 = b/15 = c/16

a : b : c = 18 : 15 : 16

a = 18u, b = 15u, c = 16u

Put the value in 18aa2+c2−b2\frac{18}{a} \sqrt{a^2+c^2-b^2}

1818u(18u)2+(16u)2−(15u)2\frac{18}{18 u} \sqrt{(18u)^2+(16u)^2-(15u)^2}

⇒ √355

∴ The correct answer is √355.

Question 9

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

12

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Sum of deviations of n numbers from 10 and 20 are a, b respectively.

ba\frac{b}{a} = - 4

Formula used:

Mean = A + ∑dn\frac{∑ d}{n}

Where A is assumed to mean,

∑d is sum of deviation, n = total terms

Calculation:

Mean = 10 + a/n       ----(1)

Mean = 20 + b/n       ----(2)

The mean is equal in equation (1) & (2).

⇒ 10 + a/n = 20 + b/n

⇒ a/n - b/n = 10

⇒ a/n - (-4a)/n = 10       (∵ b/a = -4)

⇒ 5a/n = 10

⇒ a/n = 2

Put value of a/n in mean of equation (1)

Mean = 10 + 2 = 12

∴ The correct answer is 12.

Question 10

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

54

Why this answer is correct

Concept:

Median (M): The median is the middle number in a set to find the median, arrange all of the numbers (n) in the data set in ascending order, and then find the middle number. this is called median.

Formula used:

if n is odd then M = {(n + 1)/2}th term

if n is even then M = {(n/2)th term + (n/2 + 1)th term} ÷ 2

Calculation:

Arrange the numbers in ascending order

1, 8, 12, 17, 21, 28, 35, 45, 54, 61

Total n = 10 then

We use M = {(n/2)th term + (n/2 + 1)th term} ÷ 2

(21 + 28)/2 = 24.5

2M + 5 = 2 × 24.5 + 5 = 54

∴ The correct answer is 54.

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

4

Why this answer is correct

Concept used:

(a + b)2 = a2 + 2ab + b2

Calculation:

x = 97 + 56√3     ...(i)

Comparing the equation (i) with the given concept,

⇒ x = (a + b)2

⇒ 97 + 56√3 = a2 + 2ab + b2

So, 2ab = 56√3 = 2 × 7 × 4√3

Now, x = (7 + 4√3)2

⇒ √x = 7 + 4√3     ...(ii)

Comparing the equation (ii) with the given concept,

⇒ √x = (a + b)2

⇒ 7 + 4√3 = a2 + 2ab + b2

Here, 2ab = 2 × 2 × √3

Now, √x = (2 + √3)2

⇒ x4\sqrt [4] {x}  = 2 + √ 3

Similarly, 1x41\over \sqrt [4] {x} = 2 - √3

Now,

⇒ x4\sqrt [4] {x}  + 1x41 \over \sqrt[4]{x} = 2 + √ 3 + 2 - √3 = 4

∴ The answer is 4.

Question 13

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

Cannot be determined due to insufficient data

Why this answer is correct

Given:

L : H = 3 : 2

Sum of two numbers = 45

Concept used:

Numbers are multiples of HCF.

Product of numbers = LCM × HCF

HCF (Highest Common Factor) is the largest number that can divide the given set of two or more numbers.

Calculation:

Let, the common factor of the ratio of L and H be m**.**

Now, LCM = 3m and HCF = 2m

According to the concept of HCF,

The numbers considered are 2ma and 2mb.

According to the question,

⇒ 2ma × 2mb = 3m × 2m

⇒ ab = 3/2     ---(i)

According to the question,

⇒ 2ma + 2mb = 45

⇒ 2m(a + b) = 45     ---(ii)

Now, using equations (i) and (ii), we can't find the value of all three variables a, b, and m.

∴ The answer cannot be determined due to insufficient data.

Question 14

A man walks at an average speed of 3 km/hr from his home and reaches office 40 minutes early. If he walks at an average speed of 2 km/hr, he would reach office 40 minutes late. What is the distance between his home and office?

  1. AOption (a)

    6 km

  2. BOption (b)

    8 km

  3. COption (c)

    10 km

  4. DOption (d)

    12 km

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

8 km

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Distance between Home to Office = D

With S1 = 3 km/hr, reaches 40 minutes early

With S2 = 2 km/hr, reaches 40 minutes late

Formula Used:

Distance = Speed × Time

Calculation:

Let, original time to reach the office = T minutes

According to the question,

⇒ 3 × (T - 40) = 2 × (T + 40)

⇒ 3T - 120 = 2T + 80

⇒ 3T - 2T = 80 + 120

⇒ T = 200

Now, D = 3 × (T - 40)/60

⇒ D = 3 × (200 - 40)/60

⇒ D = 3 × 160/60

⇒ D = 3 × 8/3 = 8 km

∴ The distance is 8 km.

Shortcut Trick

According to the question,

⇒ 1 unit = 80 min

⇒ 2 unit = 80 × 2 = 160 min. = 8/3 hour

⇒ Distance = 3 × (8 / 3) = 8 km

∴ The distance is 8 km.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

4

Why this answer is correct

Calculation:

3x - 1 + 33 - x = 6

⇒ 3x - 1 + 33 - x = 31 + 31

Comparing the power of 3 in both side of the equation,

x - 1 = 1

⇒ x = 2

Similarly, 3 - x = 1

⇒ x = 2

So, x = 2

Now,

⇒ 2x - 1 + 23 - x

⇒ 22 - 1 + 23 - 2 = 21 + 21 = 2 + 2 = 4

∴ The answer is 4.

Shortcut Trick We know that 3 + 3 = 6

so put x = 2

32 - 1 + 33 - 2 = 6

than

22 - 1 + 23 - 2 = 4

  3. COption (c)

    2b2

  4. DOption (d)

    2ab3

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

-2b3

Why this answer is correct

Given:

x(a−b+aba−b)x\left(a-b+\frac{a b}{a-b}\right) = y(a+b−aba+b)y\left(a+b-\frac{a b}{a+b}\right) and x + y = 2a3

Formula used:

a3 + b3 = (a + b) (a2 + b2 - ab)

(a + b)2 = a2 + b2 + 2ab

Calculation:

We have

(a−b+aba−b)\left(a-b+\frac{a b}{a-b}\right) = (a − b)2 + aba − b\frac{(a\ -\ b )^2 \ +\ ab}{a\ -\ b}

⇒ (a−b+aba−b)\left(a-b+\frac{a b}{a-b}\right) = a2 + b2 − aba − b\frac{a^2\ +\ b^2\ -\ ab }{a\ -\ b}

Put the value of (a2 + b2 - ab) = (a3 + b3)/(a + b)

⇒ a2 + b2 − aba − b\frac{a^2\ +\ b^2\ -\ ab }{a\ -\ b} = a3 + b3(a + b)(a − b)\frac{a^3\ +\ b^3}{(a\ +\ b)(a\ - \ b)}

Similarly,

(a+b−aba+b)\left(a+b-\frac{a b}{a+b}\right) = a3 − b3(a + b)(a − b)\frac{a^3\ -\ b^3}{(a\ +\ b)(a\ - \ b)}

⇒ (a+b−aba+b)\left(a+b-\frac{a b}{a+b}\right) = a3 − b3(a + b)(a − b)\frac{a^3\ -\ b^3}{(a\ +\ b)(a\ - \ b)}

Now,

xy = a3 − b3(a + b)(a − b) ×(a + b)(a − b)a3 + b3\frac{x}{y}\ =\ \frac{a^3\ -\ b^3}{(a\ +\ b)(a\ - \ b)}\ \times \frac{(a\ +\ b)(a\ - \ b)}{a^3\ +\ b^3}

⇒xy=a3 − b3a3 + b3⇒ \frac{x}{y} = \frac{a^3\ -\ b^3}{a^3\ +\ b^3}

Here, x = a3 - b3 and y = a3 + b3

⇒ x - y = (a3 - b3) - (a3 + b3) = -2b3

Hence the value of x - y is -2b3.

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

3x2 + 2y2- 18x−12y−6xy+6\rm \sqrt{18} x-\sqrt{12} y-\sqrt{6} x y+6

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Expression 3√3x3 + 2√2y3 - 18xy + 6√6

Formula used:

a3 + b3 + c3 - 3abc = (a + b + c) (a2 + b2 + c2 - ab - bc - ca)

Calculation:

The Expression 3√3x3 + 2√2y3 - 18xy + 6√6 can be written as

⇒ (√3x)3 + (√2y)3 + (√6)3 - 3 × √3x × √2y × √6

Here a = √3x, b = √2y and c = √6

Using a3 + b3 + c3 - 3abc = (a + b + c) (a2 + b2 + c2 - ab - bc - ca)

The factors can be written as,

⇒ (√3x + √2y + √6) (3x2 + 2y2 + 6 - √6xy - √12y - √18x)

Hence the required factor is 3x2 + 2y2 + 6 - √6xy - √12y - √18x.

    210

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

210

Why this answer is correct

Given:

The number = 125100

log102 = 0.301

Formula Used:

log mn = n log m

log (m/n) = log m - log n

Calculation:

Let x = 125100

Taking log on both sides

⇒ log10x = 100 log10125

⇒ log10x = 100 log1053

⇒ log10x = 100 × 3 log105

⇒ log10x = 300log10(10/2)

⇒ log10x = 300 × (log1010 - log102)

⇒ log10x = 300 × (1 - 0.301)

⇒ log10x = 209.69

The number of digits = 209 + 1 = 210

Hence, the number of digits in the expansion of  125100 is 210.

Question 19

    cx + d

  3. COption (c)

    ax + d

  4. DOption (d)

    ax + b

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

ax + b

Why this answer is correct

Calculation:

Expression 1:

acx3 + bcx2 +  adx2 + acdx + bdx + bcd

(acx3 + bcx2) + (adx2 + bdx) + (acdx + bcd)

cx2(ax + b) + dx (ax + b) + cd(ax + b)

(ax + b)(cx2 + dx + cd)

Expression 2:

dx3 + acx2 + bdx2 + bcx + acdx + bcd

(adx3 + bdx2) + (acx2 + bcx) + (acdx + bcd)

dx2(ax + b) + cx(ax + b) + cd(ax + b)

(ax + b)(dx2 + cx + cd)

We know that, HCF is the highest power of each common prime factor.

∴ HCF = ax + b

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

1

Why this answer is correct

Given:

xn - pyn + qzn is divisible by x2 + abyz - bzx - axy

Calculation:

We have

x2 + abyz - bzx - axy

This can be written as

⇒ x2 - bzx - axy + abyz

⇒ x(x - bz) - ay(x - bz)

⇒ x2 + (bz - ay)x + abyz

⇒ (x - bz) (x - ay)

Therefore, bz & ay will be factor of (x2 + abyz - bzx - axy)

As, x2 + abyz - bzx - axy is factor of xn - pyn + qzn

We can write

xn - pyn + qzn = (x - bz) (x - ay) × k    -----(1)

Put x = bz

⇒ bnzn - pyn + qzn = 0     -----(2)

Put x = ay

⇒ anyn - pyn + qzn = 0     -----(3)

Equation (3) - Equation (1)

⇒ bnzn - anyn = 0

⇒ bnzn = anyn

From equation (3)

⇒ bnzn - pyn + qzn = 0          (∵ bnzn = anyn)

⇒ 1 - (pyn/bnzn) + q/bn = 0

⇒ 1 - (pyn/anyn) + q/bn = 0    (∵ bnzn = anyn)

⇒ pan−qbn\rm \frac{p}{a^n}-\frac{q}{b^n} = 1

Hence, the value of pan−qbn\rm \frac{p}{a^n}-\frac{q}{b^n} = 1.

    1 only

  2. BOption (b)

    2 only

  3. COption (c)

    Both 1 and 2

  4. DOption (d)

    Neither 1 nor 2

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

1 only

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Statement 1: (a + b) ∝ (a - b)

Statement 2: a ∝ b

Calculation:

Statement: 1 (a + b) ∝ (a - b)

⇒ (a + b) = k (a - b), (where k is the proportionality constant)

On squaring both sides, we get

(a + b)2 = k2 (a - b)2

⇒ (a + b)2(a − b)2\frac{(a\ +\ b)^2}{(a\ -\ b)^2} = k2

⇒ (a2 + b2 + 2ab)a2 + b2 − 2ab)\frac{(a^2\ +\ b^2\ +\ 2ab)}{a^2\ +\ b^2\ -\ 2ab)} = k2

By using componendo & dividendo method, we get

⇒ (a2 + b2 + 2ab + a2 + b2 − 2ab)(a2 + b2 + 2ab − a2 − b2 + 2ab)\frac{(a^2\ +\ b^2\ +\ 2ab \ +\ a^2\ +\ b^2\ -\ 2ab)}{(a^2\ +\ b^2\ +\ 2ab \ -\ a^2\ -\ b^2\ +\ 2ab)} = k2 + 1k2 − 1\frac{k^2\ +\ 1}{k^2\ -\ 1}

⇒ 2 (a2 + b2)4ab\frac{2\ (a^2 \ + \ b^2)}{4ab} = k2 + 1k2 − 1\frac{k^2\ +\ 1}{k^2\ -\ 1}

⇒ (a2 + b2) = k2 + 1k2 − 1\frac{k^2\ +\ 1}{k^2\ -\ 1} (2ab)

Thus, (a2 + b2) ∝ ab, Where k2 + 1k2 − 1\frac{k^2\ +\ 1}{k^2\ -\ 1} & 2 is constant.

Hence, the statement 1 is correct.

Statement: 2 a ∝ b

⇒ a = kb, (where k is the proportionality constant)

⇒ a/b = k

By using componendo & dividendo method, we get

⇒ (a + b)/(a - b) = (k + 1)/(k - 1)

On squaring both sides,

⇒ (a + b)2/(a - b)2 = (k + 1)2/(k - 1)2

⇒ (a2 + b2 + 2ab)/(a2 + b2 - 2ab) = (k + 1)2/(k - 1)2

Again using componendo & dividendo method, we get

⇒ 2 (a2 + b2)/4ab = [(k + 1)2 + (k - 1)2]/[(k + 1)2 - (k - 1)2]

⇒ (a2 + b2) = ab [(k + 1)2 + (k - 1)2]/[(k + 1)2 - (k - 1)2]

Here, [(k + 1)2 + (k - 1)2]/[(k + 1)2 - (k - 1)2] is constant.

⇒ (a2 + b2) = ab

Therefore, (a2 - b2) ≠ ab

Hence, the statement 2 is incorrect.

∴ Only 1st statement is correct.

Question 22

If (3a + 6b + c + 2d) × (3a - 6b - c + 2d) = (3a - 6b + c - 2d) × (3a + 6b - c - 2d), then which one of the following is correct?

  1. AOption (a)

    ab = cd

  2. BOption (b)

    ac = bd

  3. COption (c)

    ad = bc

  4. DOption (d)

    ad + bc = 0

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

ad = bc

Why this answer is correct

Concept Used:

If a+ba−b\frac{a+b}{a-b} = c+dc−d\frac{c+d}{c-d} then ab\frac{a}{b} = cd\frac{c}{d}

Calculation:

(3a + 6b + c + 2d) × (3a - 6b - c + 2d) = (3a - 6b + c - 2d) × (3a + 6b - c - 2d)

⇒ (3a + 6b + c + 2d)/(3a - 6b + c - 2d) = (3a + 6b - c - 2d)/(3a - 6b - c + 2d)

⇒ (3a + c) + (6b + 2d)/(3a + c) - (6b + 2d) = (3a - c) + (6b - 2d)/(3a - c) - (6b - 2d)

⇒ (3a + c)/(6b + 2d) = (3a - c)/(6b - 2d)

⇒ (3a + c)/(3a - c) = (6b + 2d)/(6b - 2d)

⇒ 3a/c = 6b/2d

⇒ a/c = b/d

⇒ ad = bc

∴ The correct option is 3 which is ad = bc.

Question 23

  4. DOption (d)

    0

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

-3

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick 3 sin θ + 5 cos θ = 5

If in the given equation we put θ = 0 then LHS = RHS,

Therefore,

⇒ 5 sin θ - 3 cos θ

⇒ 5 sin 0 - 3 cos 0    ---(Putting θ = 0)

⇒ 0 - 3 × 1 = - 3

∴ 5 sin θ - 3 cos θ is equal to - 3.

Alternate Method

Formula Used:

(a + b)2 = a2 + b2 + 2ab

sin2 θ = (1 - cos2 θ)

cos2 θ = (1 - sin2 θ)

Calculation:

3 sin θ + 5 cos θ = 5

Squaring on both sides,

⇒ (3 sin θ + 5 cos θ)2 = 52

⇒ 9 sin2 θ + 25 cos2 θ + 30 sin θ . cos θ = 25

⇒ 9 (1 - cos2 θ) + 25 (1 - sin2 θ) + 30 sin θ . cos θ = 25

⇒ 9 - 9 cos2 θ + 25 - 25 sin2 θ + 30 sin θ . cos θ - 25 = 0

⇒ - 9 cos2 θ - 25 sin2 θ + 30 sin θ . cos θ + 9 = 0

⇒ 25 sin2 θ + 9 cos 2 θ - 2 × (5 sin θ × 3 cos θ) = 9

⇒ (5 sin θ - 3 cos θ)2 = ± 3

∴ 5 sin θ - 3 cos θ is equal to - 3.

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

3

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Condition 1: The combined age of a man & his wife is 6 times the combined age of their children.

Condition 2: Two years ago their combined age was 10 times the combined age of their children.

Condition 3: Six years later their combined age will be 3 times the combined age of their children.

Calculation:

Let the combined age of man & wife be P, and

The combined age of children is C.

According to the 1st Condition:

⇒ X = 6Y     -----(1)

According to the 2nd Condition:

2 years ago,

⇒ P = X - 2 - 2 = X - 4

⇒ C = (Y - 2N)   ---(N = No. of children)

⇒ X - 4 = 10 (Y - 2N)

⇒ X - 4 = 10Y - 20N

⇒ X - 10Y + 20N = 4     -----(2)

According to the 3rd Condition:

⇒ X + 12 = 3 (Y + 6N)

⇒ X + 12 = 3Y + 18N

⇒ X - 3Y - 18N = -12     -----(3)

Substituting equation 1 in 2 & 3,

⇒ - 4Y + 20N = 4

⇒ 5N - Y = 1     -----(4)

⇒ 3Y -18N = - 12

⇒ Y - 6N = - 4     -----(5)

Adding equation 4 & 5,

⇒ - N = - 3

⇒ N = 3

∴ The number of children is 3.

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

 Put x = 0,

3 (sin x - cos x)4 + 6 (sin x + cos x)2 + 4 (sin x)6 + 4 (cos x)6

⇒ 3 (sin 0 - cos 0)4 + 6 (sin 0 + cos 0)2 + 4 (sin 0)6 + 4 (cos 0)6

⇒ 3 (-1)4 + 6 (1)2 + 4 (0)6 + 4 (1)6

Question 26

What is the value of sin θ + cos θ, if θ satisfies the equation cot2 θ - (√3 + 1) cot θ + √3 = 0; 0<θ<π40<\theta<\frac{\pi}{4} ?

  1. AOption (a)

    √2

  2. BOption (b)

    2

  3. COption (c)

    3+12\frac{\sqrt{3}+1}{2}

  4. DOption (d)

    3−12\frac{\sqrt{3}-1}{2}

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

3+12\frac{\sqrt{3}+1}{2}

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick Here, 0 < θ < 45∘

⇒ So possible value of θ = 30∘

Putting θ = 30∘ in the equation we get,

⇒ cot2 30∘ - (√3 + 1) cot 30∘ + √3

⇒ 3 - 3 - √3 + √3 = 0

⇒ So, sin 30∘ + cos 30∘ = 3+12\frac{\sqrt3 + 1}{2}

∴ The correct answer is 3+12\frac{\sqrt3 + 1}{2}.

Alternate Method

Given:

cot2 θ - (√3√{3} + 1) cot θ + √3√{3} = 0

0<θ<π40<θ<\frac{\pi}{4}

Calculation:

Since θ lies between 00 and 450, putting θ = 300

⇒ cot2 θ - (√3√{3} + 1) cot θ + √3√{3} = cot2 300 - (√3√{3} + 1) cot 300 + √3√{3}

⇒ cot2 θ - (√3√{3} + 1) cot θ + √3√{3} = (3) - (√3√{3} + 1)√3√{3} + √3√{3}

⇒ cot2 θ - (√3√{3} + 1) cot θ + √3√{3} = 3 - (3 + √3√{3}) + √3√{3}

⇒ cot2 θ - (√3√{3} + 1) cot θ + √3√{3} = 3 - 3 - √3√{3} + √3√{3} = 0

Thus, the given condition satisfies

⇒ sin θ + cos θ = sin 300 + cos 300

⇒ sin θ + cos θ = 1/2 + √3√{3}/2 = (√3√{3} + 1)/2

∴ The correct answer is √3 + 12\frac{√3\ +\ 1}{2}.

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

π12\frac{\pi}{12}

Why this answer is correct

Given:

tan 2θ tan 4θ - 1 = 0, 0<θ<π20<\theta<\frac{\pi}{2}

Concept Used:

If tan A + tan B = 1

Then A + B = 900

Calculation:

According to the question

⇒ tan 2θ tan 4θ - 1 = 0

⇒ tan 2θ tan 4θ = 1

⇒ 2θ + 4θ = 900

⇒ θ = 150 = π12\frac{\pi }{12}

∴ The value of θ is π12\frac{\pi }{12} which satisfies the equation tan 2θ tan 4θ - 1 = 0.

Alternate Method We have to check for which value of θ, 0<θ<π20<θ<\frac{π}{2}

The equation tan 2θ tan 4θ - 1 = 0 satisfies

Option (1): θ = π12\frac{\pi }{12} = 150

⇒ tan 2θ tan 4θ - 1 = tan 2(150) tan 4(150) - 1

⇒ tan 2θ tan 4θ - 1 = tan 300 tan 600 - 1

⇒ tan 2θ tan 4θ - 1 = (1√3\frac{1}{√3}× √3) - 1 = 0

∴ The value of θ is π12\frac{\pi }{12} which satisfies the equation tan 2θ tan 4θ - 1 = 0.

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

sin θ + cos θ

Why this answer is correct

Given:

tan x = sin⁡θ+cos⁡θsin⁡θ−cos⁡θ\frac{\sin θ+\cos θ}{\sin θ-\cos θ}, π4<θ<π2\frac{\pi}{4}<θ<\frac{\pi}{2}

Formula Used:

1. tan θ = PB\frac{P}{B}

2. sin θ = PH\frac{P}{H}

3. sin2θ + cos2θ = 1

Calculation:

By Pythagoras Theorem

⇒ H = (sinθ+cosθ)2+(sinθ−cosθ)2\sqrt{(sinθ+cosθ)^2+(sinθ-cosθ)^2}

⇒ H = sin2θ+cos2θ+2sinθcosθ+sin2θ+cos2θ−2sinθcosθ\sqrt{sin^2θ+cos^2θ+2sinθ cosθ+sin^2θ+cos^2θ-2sinθ cosθ}

⇒ H = 2(sin2θ+cos2θ)\sqrt{2(sin^2θ+cos^2θ)}  = 2\sqrt{2}

According to the figure

⇒ 2\sqrt{2}  sin x = 2\sqrt{2}  × sinθ+cos⁡θ2\frac{sinθ+\cosθ}{\sqrt{2}} = sinθ + cosθ

∴ The value of 2\sqrt{2}  sin x is equal to sinθ + cosθ.

⇒ (sin2 θ - 4 sin θ + 3) = 0 OR (4 - cos2 θ + 4 sin θ) = 0

Solving the first equation:

(sin2 θ - 4 sin θ + 3) = 0

⇒ sin2 θ - sin θ - 3 sin θ + 3 = 0

⇒ sin θ (sin θ - 1) - 3 (sin θ - 1) = 0

⇒ (sin θ - 1) (sin θ - 3) = 0

⇒ sin θ = 1 OR sin θ = 3

⇒ θ = 900 = π2\frac{\pi}{2} (∵ -1 < sin θ < 1, neglecting sin θ = 3)

Solving the another equation:

(4 - cos2 θ + 4 sin θ) = 0

⇒ 4 - (1 - sin2 θ) + 4 sin θ = 0

⇒ sin2 θ + 4 sin θ + 3 = 0

⇒ sin2 θ + sin θ + 3 sin θ + 3 = 0

⇒ sin θ (sin θ + 1) + 3 (sin θ + 1) = 0

⇒ (sin θ + 1) (sin θ + 3) = 0

⇒ sin θ = -1 OR sin θ = -3

⇒ θ = 2700 = 3π2\frac{3\pi}{2} (∵ -1 < sin θ < 1, neglecting sin θ = -3)

Again, according to the question 0 < θ < π2\frac{\pi}{2}

∴ The given equation does not satisfy for any value of θ, 0 < θ < π2\frac{\pi}{2}.

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

1

Why this answer is correct

Given:

For every θ∈(0,π2)θ \in\left(0, \frac{\pi}{2}\right)

x sin3 θ + y cos3 θ = sin θ cos θ and x sin θ - y cos θ = 0

Formula Used:

1. (a + b)2 = a2 + b2 + 2ab

2. (a - b)2 = a2 + b2 - 2ab

Calculation:

Since every θ∈(0,π2)θ \in\left(0, \frac{\pi}{2}\right) , putting θ = 450

According to the question

⇒ x sin3 θ + y cos3 θ = sin θ cos θ

⇒ x (1√2)3(\frac{1}{√2})^3 + y (1√2)3(\frac{1}{√2})^3 = 1√2\frac{1}{√2} × 1√2\frac{1}{√2}

⇒ x2√2\frac{x}{2√2} + y2√2\frac{y}{2√2} = 12\frac{1}{2}

⇒ x + y = √2     -----(1)

Again, according to the question

⇒ x sin θ - y cos θ = 0

⇒ x (1√2)(\frac{1}{√2}) - y (1√2)(\frac{1}{√2}) = 0

⇒ x - y = 0        -----(2)

Squaring Equation(1) and (2) and adding

⇒ x2 + y2 + 2xy + x2 + y2 - 2xy = (√2)2 + 0

⇒ 2(x2 + y2) = 2

⇒ x2 + y2 = 1

∴ The value of x2 + y2 is 1.

Consider the following for the next items that follow:

A flagstaff stands on the top of a vertical tower. The angle of elevation of the top of the flagstaff from a certain place on the same horizontal level with the base of the tower is found to be α. Advancing a distance d towards the tower in the same horizontal plane, the angle of elevation of the top of the flagstaff is observed to be β and that of the top of the tower is observed to be γ. Let H be the height of the top of the flagstaff from the base of the tower and h be the height of the tower.

Question 31

Which one of the following is correct?

  1. AOption (a)

    H tan γ - h tan β = 0

  2. BOption (b)

    h tan γ - H tan β = 0.

  3. COption (c)

    H tan γ - h tan α = 0

  4. DOption (d)

    h tan γ - H tan α = 0

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

H tan γ - h tan β = 0

Why this answer is correct

Given:

The angle of elevation of the top of the flagstaff with the base of the tower is found to be α.

The angle of elevation of the top of the flagstaff is observed to be β.

And that of the top of the tower is observed to be γ.

Let H be the height of the top of the flagstaff from the base of the tower and h be the height of the tower.

Concept Used:

tan θ = P/B, Where

P = Perpendicular

B = Base

Calculation:

From the above figure, We know that

tan β = H/x and tan γ = h/x

⇒ tan β = H/x

⇒ x = H/tan β     -----(1)

⇒ tan γ = h/x

⇒ x = h/tan γ      -----(2)

From equation (1) & (2), We know that

⇒ H/tan β = h/tan γ

⇒ H tan γ = h tan β

⇒ H tan γ - h tan β = 0

∴ The correct option is 1.

Question 32

Which one of the following is correct?

  1. AOption (a)

    d=H(cot⁡α−cot⁡β)2{d}=\frac{{H}(\cot \alpha-\cot \beta)}{2}

  2. BOption (b)

    d=H(tan⁡α−tan⁡β)2{d}=\frac{{H}(\tan \alpha-\tan \beta)}{2}

  3. COption (c)

    d = H (cot α - cot β)

  4. DOption (d)

    d = H (tan α- tan β)

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

d = H (cot α - cot β)

Concept Used:

cot θ = B/P, Where

P = Perpendicular

B = Base

Calculation:

From the above figure, We know that

cot α = (x + d)/H and cot β = x/H

⇒ cot α = (x + d)/H

⇒ x = H cot α - d     -----(1)

⇒ cot β = x/H

⇒ x = H cot β          -----(2)

From equation (1) & (2), We know that

H cot β = H cot α - d

⇒ d = H cot α - H cot β

⇒ d = H (cot α - cot β)

∴ The correct option is 3.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

x < y

Why this answer is correct

Given:

AB is a straight road leading to the foot P of a tower of height h.

Q is at distance x from P and R is at a distance y from Q.

The angle of elevation of the top of the tower at Q is twice of that at R.

Concept Used:

Use the formula: tan 2θ=2tan⁡θ1−tan⁡2θ2 θ=\frac{2 \tan θ}{1-\tan ^2 θ}

tan θ = P/B, Where

P = Perpendicular

B = Base

Calculation:

From the above figure, We know that

tan θ = h/(x + y) and tan 2θ = h/x

⇒ tan 2θ = h/x

⇒ 2tan⁡θ1−tan⁡2θ\frac{2 \tan θ}{1-\tan ^2 θ} = h/x

⇒ 2 tan θ = (1 - tan2 θ) (h/x)

⇒ 2h/(x + y) = [1 - (h2/(x + y)2)] (h/x)

⇒ 2h/(x + y) = [(x + y)2 - h2]/(x + y)2 (h/x)

⇒ (2x) (x + y) = x2 + y2 + 2xy - h2

⇒ 2x2 + 2xy = x2 + y2 + 2xy - h2

⇒ x2 =  y2 - h2

⇒ h2 = y2 - x2

To find the height we need y greater than x.

Here, x < y

∴ The correct option is 2.

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

h2 = y2 - x2

Why this answer is correct

Given:

AB is a straight road leading to the foot P of a tower of height h.

Q is at distance x from P and R is at a distance y from Q.

The angle of elevation of the top of the tower at Q is twice of that at R.

Concept Used:

Use the formula: tan 2θ=2tan⁡θ1−tan⁡2θ2 θ=\frac{2 \tan θ}{1-\tan ^2 θ}

tan θ = P/B, Where

tan θ = h/(x + y) and tan 2θ = h/x

⇒ tan 2θ = h/x

⇒ 2tan⁡θ1−tan⁡2θ\frac{2 \tan θ}{1-\tan ^2 θ} = h/x

⇒ 2 tan θ = (1 - tan2 θ) (h/x)

⇒ 2h/(x + y) = [1 - (h2/(x + y)2)] (h/x)

⇒ 2h/(x + y) = [(x + y)2 - h2]/(x + y)2 (h/x)

⇒ (2x) (x + y) = x2 + y2 + 2xy - h2

⇒ 2x2 + 2xy = x2 + y2 + 2xy - h2

⇒ x2 =  y2 - h2

⇒ h2 = y2 - x2

∴ The correct option is 4.

Two parallel chords AB and CD of a circle are of lengths 60 cm and 80 cm respectively. They are on the same side of the centre O and 10 cm apart.

Question 35

What is the diameter of the circle ?

  1. AOption (a)

    120 cm

  2. BOption (b)

    110 cm

  3. COption (c)

    100 cm

  4. DOption (d)

    90 cm

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

100 cm

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

OD = OB = r

X2 + 402 = 302 + (X + 10)2

Clearly X = 30

then OD2 = 302+402

OD = 50

Diameter = 2r = 100

Alternate Method

Given:

AB = 60 cm and CD = 80 cm

The distance between AB and CD is 10 cm

Formula Used:

In right angles triangle

Hypotenuse2 = Base2 + Perpendicular2

Calculation:

Let OP be x cm

⇒ OQ = (x - 10) cm

OD = OB = Radius      -----(1)

In ΔOQD, by Pythagoras Theorem

OD2 = OQ2 + QD2       -----(2)

In ΔOPB, by Pythagoras Theorem

OB2 = OP2 + PB2        -----(3)

From (1), (2) and (3)

OQ2 + QD2 = OP2 + PB2

⇒ (x - 10)2 + 402 = x2 + 302

⇒ x2 + 100 - 20x + 1600 = x2 + 900

⇒ 20x = 800

⇒ x = 40 cm

In ΔOPB, by Pythagoras Theorem

OB2 = 402 + 302

⇒ OB2 = 1600 + 900 = 2500

⇒ OB = 50 cm

Diameter = 2 × Radius = 2 × OB = 100 cm

∴ The diameter of the circle is 100 cm.

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

712\frac{7}{12}

Why this answer is correct

Given:

AB = 60 cm and CD = 80 cm

The distance between AB and CD is 10 cm

∠AOB = α and ∠COD = β

Formula Used:

In right angles triangle

1. Hypotenuse2 = Base2 + Perpendicular2

2. tan θ = Perpendicular(Opposite Side)Base(Adjacent Side)\frac{Perpendicular(Opposite\ Side)}{Base(Adjacent\ Side)}

Calculation:

Let OP be x cm

⇒ OQ = (x - 10) cm

OD = OB = Radius      -----(1)

In ΔOQD, by Pythagoras Theorem

OD2 = OQ2 + QD2       -----(2)

In ΔOPB, by Pythagoras Theorem

OB2 = OP2 + PB2        -----(3)

From (1), (2) and (3)

OQ2 + QD2 = OP2 + PB2

⇒ (x - 10)2 + 402 = x2 + 302

⇒ x2 + 100 - 20x + 1600 = x2 + 900

⇒ 20x = 800

⇒ x = 40 cm

⇒ OQ = x - 10 = 30 cm

According to the question

∠AOB = α

⇒ In ΔPOB, ∠POB = α/2

⇒ tan (α/2) = PB/OP = 30/40

∠COD = β

⇒ In ΔQOD, ∠QOD = β/2

⇒ tan (β/2) = QD/OQ = 40/30

tan (β/2) - tan (α/2) = (40/30) - (30/40)

⇒ tan (β/2) - tan (α/2) = (1600 - 900)/1200 = 7/12

∴ The value of tan (β/2) - tan (α/2) is 7/12.

Consider the following for the next items that follow:

Let p = x4 - y2z2, q = y4 - z2x2, r = z4 - x2y2.

Question 37

What is px2 + qy2 + rz2 equal to ?

  1. AOption (a)

    (x2 + y2 + z2) (p + q + r)

  2. BOption (b)

    -(x2 + y2 + z2) (p + q + r)

  3. COption (c)

    (y2 + z2 - x2) (r - q - p)

  4. DOption (d)

    (x2 + y2 - z2) (p - q - r)

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

(x2 + y2 + z2) (p + q + r)

Why this answer is correct

Calculation:

Let x = 1, y = 1, and z = 2

p = x4 - y2z2

⇒ p = 14 - (12 × 22) = 1 - 4 = (-3)

q = y4 - z2x2

⇒ q = 14 - (22 × 12) = 1 - 4 = (-3)

r = z4 - x2y2

⇒ r = 24 - (12 × 12) = 16 - 1 = 15

Now, px2 + qy2 + rz2 = (-3)(12) + (-3)(12) + 15(22)

⇒ px2 + qy2 + rz2 = (-3) + (-3) + 60 = 54

Option 01: (x2 + y2 + z2) (p + q + r)

⇒ (x2 + y2 + z2) (p + q + r) = (12 + 12 + 22) [(-3) + (-3) + 15]

⇒ (x2 + y2 + z2) (p + q + r) = 6 × 9 = 54

Thus, Option 01 satisfies the condition.

Thus, Option 01 is the correct answer.

Option 02: -(x2 + y2 + z2) (p + q + r)

⇒ -(x2 + y2 + z2) (p + q + r) = -(12 + 12 + 22) [(-3) + (-3) + 15]

⇒ -(x2 + y2 + z2) (p + q + r) = (-6) × 9 = (-54)

Thus, Option 02 does not satisfy the condition.

Option 03: (y2 + z2 - x2) (r - q - p)

⇒ (y2 + z2 - x2) (r - q - p) = (12 + 22 - 12) [15 - (-3) - (-3)]

⇒ (y2 + z2 - x2) (r - q - p) = 4 × 15 = 60

Thus, Option 03 does not satisfy the condition.

Option 04: (x2 + y2 - z2) (p - q - r)

⇒ (x2 + y2 - z2) (p - q - r) = (12 + 12 - 22) [(-3) - (-3) - 15]

⇒ (x2 + y2 - z2) (p - q - r) = (-2) × (-15) = 30

Thus, Option 04 does not satisfy the condition.

∴ The equation px2 + qy2 + rz2 is equal to (x2 + y2 + z2) (p + q + r).

Question 38

What is x2 (px2 + qy2 + rz2) + qr - p2 equal to?

  1. AOption (a)

    1

  2. BOption (b)

    0

  3. COption (c)

    p + q + r

  4. DOption (d)

    x2 + y2 + z2

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

0

Why this answer is correct

Calculation:

Let x = 1, y = 1, and z = 2

p = x4 - y2z2

⇒ p = 14 - (12 × 22) = 1 - 4 = (-3)

q = y4 - z2x2

⇒ q = 14 - (22 × 12) = 1 - 4 = (-3)

r = z4 - x2y2

⇒ r = 24 - (12 × 12) = 16 - 1 = 15

Now,

x2 (px2 + qy2 + rz2) + qr - p2

⇒ 12 [(-3)12 + (-3)12 + 15(22)] + (-3)(15) - (-3)2

⇒ [(-3) + (-3) + 60] - 45 - 9

⇒ 54 - 54

⇒ 0

∴ The value of x2 (px2 + qy2 + rz2) + qr - p2 is 0.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

2R2R−r\frac{2 R^2}{R-r}

Why this answer is correct

Given:

A right circular cone covers two spheres.

Radius of small sphere = r

Radius of bigger sphere = R

Concept used:

The Angle-Angle (AA) Similarity Criterion for triangle similarity states that if two angles of one triangle are respectively equal to two angles of another, the triangles are similar. It proves that proves that the third angle of both triangles will also be equal by leveraging the angle sum property of a triangle.

The Side-Side-Side (SSS) Criterion for triangle similarity states that if the sides of one triangle are proportional to the sides of another (i.e., they maintain the same ratio), their corresponding angles will be equal, and the triangles will be similar.

Calculation:

Let, the height of the cone, AP = h; and AD = a

In ∆ ADE and ∆ AFG,

(i) ∠ ADE = ∠ AFG = 90º

(ii) ∠ DAE = ∠ FAG

So, according to the AA Similarity concept,

 ∆ ADE ≅  ∆ AFG

Now, according to the SSS similarity criterion,

⇒ DE/FG = AD/AF

⇒ r/R = a/(a + r + R)

⇒ R/r = (a + r +R)/a

⇒ R/r = a/a + (r + R)/a

⇒ R/r = 1 + (r + R)/a

⇒ (R - r)/r = (r + R)/a

⇒ a = (r + R) × r/(R - r)

⇒ a = r(r + R)/(R - r)

Now, h = AD + DO + OF + FP

⇒ (a + r + R + R) = (a + r + 2R)

⇒ (r2+Rr+Rr−r2+2R2−2Rr)(R−r)\frac {(r^2+ Rr + Rr - r^2 + 2R^2 - 2Rr)} {(R - r)} = 2R2(R−r)\frac {2R^2}{(R - r)}

∴ The height of the cone is 2R2(R−r)\frac {2R^2}{(R - r)}.

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

2R2tan⁡θR−r\frac{2 \mathrm{R}^2 \tan \theta}{\mathrm{R}-\mathrm{r}}

Why this answer is correct

Given:

A right circular cone covers two spheres.

Radius of small sphere = r

Radius of bigger sphere = R

∠ CAB = 2θ

Calculation:

Let, the radius of the base = BP

⇒ tanθ = BP/2R2(R−r)\frac {2R^2} {(R - r)}

⇒ 2R2 × tanθ /(R - r) = BP

⇒ BP = 2R2 × tanθ /(R - r)

∴ The answer is option 2.

Answer: (d)D.

2R = 3r

Why this answer is correct

Concept used:

Pythagoras Theorem states,

Hypotenuse2 = Base2 + Perpendicular2

Calculation:

According to the given data, this diagram is drawn.

Let, v and p are the centers of semi-circle S1 and circle S respectively.

In ΔpvC, ∠ pCv = 90°

vp = Sum of the radius of S3 and S = (R + r)

pC = Radius of semi-circle S1 - Radius of circle S

So, vp2 = pC2 + Cm2

⇒ (R + r)2 = (2R - r)2 + R2

⇒ R2 + 2Rr + r2 = 4R2 - 4Rr + r2 + R2

⇒ ⇒ R2 + 2Rr + r2 = 5R2 - 4Rr + r2

⇒ 5R2 - 4Rr + r2  - R2 - 2Rr - r2 = 0

⇒ 4R2 - 6Rr = 0

Question 42

If m is the area of the circle S and n is the area of semi-circle S1, then which one of the following is correct?

  1. AOption (a)

    9m = 2n

  2. BOption (b)

    9m = 4n

  3. COption (c)

    3m = 2n

  4. DOption (d)

    7m = 3n

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

9m = 2n

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Area of circle S = m

Area of semi-circle S1 = n

Concept used:

Area of a circle = πR2

Area of a semi-circle = (πR2)/2

Where, R = radius, and π = 22/7

Calculation:

Radius of circle S = r

Radius of semi-circle S1 = 2R

Let, v and p are the centers of semi-circle S1 and circle S respectively.

In ΔpvC, ∠ pCv = 90°

vp = Sum of the radius of S3 and S = (R + r)

pC = Radius of semi-circle S1 - Radius of circle S

⇒ DC - r = (2R - r)     [∵ DC = AC]

So, vp2 = pC2 + Cm2

⇒ (R + r)2 = (2R - r)2 + R2

⇒ R2 + 2Rr + r2 = 4R2 - 4Rr + r2 + R2

⇒ ⇒ R2 + 2Rr + r2 = 5R2 - 4Rr + r2

⇒ 4R2 - 6Rr = 0

⇒ 2R = 3r

⇒ r = (2R)/3

Now, mn=Πr2Π(2R)22\frac{m}{n} = \frac{\Pi r^{2}}{\frac{\Pi (2R)^{2}}{2}}

⇒ mn=Π(2R3)2Π(2R)22\frac{m}{n} = \frac{\Pi (\frac {2R}{3})^{2}}{\frac{\Pi (2R)^{2}}{2}}

⇒ mn=4R294R22\frac{m}{n} = \frac{\frac {4R^{2}}{9}}{\frac{4R^{2}}{2}}

⇒ m×4R22=n×4R29m \times {\frac{4R^{2}}{2}} = n \times {\frac {4R^{2}}{9}}

⇒ m/2 = n/9

⇒ 9m = 2n

∴ Option 1 is the correct answer.

Answer: (d)D.

1 m\frac{1}{\mathrm{~m}}

Why this answer is correct

Concept:

Componendo Dividendo Rule:

If (a + b ) : (a – b) = (c + d) : (c – d), than

a : b = c : d

The total monthly electricity bill for a house consists of the sum of two parts, one part is proportional to number of rooms and the other part is proportional to number of units consumed. Rs. 400 is the monthly  electricity bill for a house with 8 rooms and consuming 240 units and Rs. 320 is the monthly electricity bill for a house with 6 rooms and consuming 200 units.

Question 45

What is the monthly electricity bill for a house with m rooms and consuming n units?

  1. AOption (a)

    Rs. (40 m + n)

  2. BOption (b)

    Rs. (20 m + n)

  3. COption (c)

    Rs. (40m+n)2\rm \frac{(40 m+n)}{2}

  4. DOption (d)

    Rs. (30m+n)2\rm \frac{(30 m+n)}{2}

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

Rs. (20 m + n)

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Electricity bill for 8 rooms and 240 units is Rs. 400

Electricity bill for 6 rooms and 200 units is Rs. 320

Concept used:

The concept of linear equations in two variables is used, considering

the charge per room as one variable and the charge per unit as

another variable.

Calculation:

The equations can be represented as:

8x + 240y = 400 ......(i)

6x + 200y = 320 ......(ii)

Solving these equations:

Subtract equation 2 from equation 1,

⇒ (8x - 6x) + (240y - 200y) = (400 - 320)

⇒ 2x + 40y = 80

⇒ x + 20y = 40

⇒ x = 40 - 20y

Substituting x = 40 - 20y in Equation 2,

⇒ 6(40 - 20y) + 200y = 320

⇒ 240 - 120y + 200y = 320

⇒ 240 + 80y = 320

⇒ 80y = 80

⇒ y = 1

Substituting y = 1 in equation 1,

⇒ 8x + 240 = 400

⇒ 8x = 160

⇒ x = 20

∴ The monthly electricity bill for a house with m rooms and consuming n units is 20m + n.

Question 46

What is the monthly electricity bill for a house with 7 rooms consuming 300 units?

    Rs. 500

  2. BOption (b)

    Rs. 440

  3. COption (c)

    Rs. 340

  4. DOption (d)

    Rs. 300

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

Rs. 440

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Electricity bill for 8 rooms and 240 units is Rs. 400

Electricity bill for 6 rooms and 200 units is Rs. 320

Formula used:

Total cost = cost per room × number of rooms + cost per unit

electricity × number of units consumed

Concept used:

Use Of simultaneous equations to find the cost per room (x) and cost

per unit of electricity (y) and find the total cost by adding the cost per

room and cost per unit of electricity.

Calculation:

The equations can be represented as:

8x + 240y = 400 ......(i)

6x + 200y = 320 ......(ii)

Solving these equations:

Subtract equation 2 from equation 1,

⇒ (8x - 6x) + (240y - 200y) = (400 - 320)

⇒ 2x + 40y = 80

⇒ x + 20y = 40

⇒ x = 40 - 20y

Substituting x = 40 - 20y in Equation 2,

⇒ 6(40 - 20y) + 200y = 320

⇒ 240 - 120y + 200y = 320

⇒ 240 + 80y = 320

⇒ 80y = 80

⇒ y = 1

Substituting y = 1 in equation 1,

⇒ 8x + 240 = 400

⇒ 8x = 160

⇒ x = 20

To find the bill for 7 rooms and 300 units.

Using the formula,

⇒ Total cost = 20 × 7 + 1 × 300

⇒ Total cost = 140 + 300

⇒ Rs. 440

∴ The monthly electricity bill for a house with 7 rooms and consuming 300 units is Rs. 440.

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Average weekly wages earned by a worker = Rs. 3,520

Formula used:

Average Mean = ∑fi×xi∑fi\frac{\sum fi \times xi}{\sum fi}

x(i) = (L1 + L2)/2

L1 = upper limit &  L2= lower limit

Where f(i) = median of class  & x(i) = Mean of class

Calculation:

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

Rs. 3,383

Why this answer is correct

Formula used:

Median = L+(N2−Ff)×hL + (\frac{\frac{N}{2} - F}{f}) × h

L = lower limit of median class

N = total frequency

F = C.F of class just preceding median class

f = frequency of median class

h = width of median class

Calculation:

WagesNO. of workersC. F
2050 - 255055
2550 - 3050105 + 10 = 15
3050 - 3550k = 1515 + 15 = 30
3550 - 4050830 + 8 = 38
4050 - 4550238 +2 = 40
4550 - 50501040 + 10 = 50
N = 50

Here, h = 3550 - 3050 = 500, L = 3550

Median = 3050+(502−1515)×5003050 + (\frac{\frac{50}{2} - 15}{15}) × 500

Median = 3050 + (10/15) × 500

Median = 3050 + 333.33 = 3383.33 ≈ 3383

∴ The correct answer is 3383.

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

1,(a+b−c)(a+b+c)1, \frac{(a+b-c)}{(a+b+c)}

Why this answer is correct

Formula used:

ax2 + bx + c = 0

x=−b±b2−4ac2ax = {-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac} \over 2a}

Calculation:

x = (2a + 2b) ± 4(a + b)2 − 4[(a + b)2 − c2]2(a + b + c) {(2a\ +\ 2b)\ \pm\ \sqrt{4(a\ +\ b)^2\ -\ 4[(a\ +\ b)^2\ -\ c^2]} \over 2(a\ +\ b\ +\ c)}

Where, [(a +b + c)(a +b - c) = (a + b)2 - c2]

⇒ x = (2a + 2b) ± 2c2(a + b + c) {(2a\ +\ 2b)\ \pm\ {2c} \over 2(a\ +\ b\ +\ c)}

⇒ x = a + b + ca + b + c {a\ +\ b\ +\ {c} \over a\ +\ b\ +\ c} = 1, and

x = a + b − ca + b + c {a\ +\ b\ -\ {c} \over a\ +\ b\ +\ c}

∴ x has two roots 1, a + b − ca + b + c {a\ +\ b\ -\ {c} \over a\ +\ b\ +\ c}

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

26

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Rate = 20% per annum

log10 2 = 0.301

log10 3 = 0.477

Formula Used:

1. A = P(1 + R/100)n

2. log mn  = n log m

3. log mn = log m + log n

Where,

A = Amount, P = Principal,

R = Rate, n = No. of years

Calculation:

According to the question condition,

100P = P(1 + 20/100)n = P(1 + 2/10)n

⇒ 102 = (12/10)n

Taking log on both sides

⇒ 2 log 10 = n log (12/10)

⇒ 2 log 10 = n log (4 × 3) - log 10

⇒ 2 = n [log 4 + log 3] - 1       [∵ log 10 = 1]

⇒ 2 = n [log 22 + log 3] - 1

⇒ 2 = n [2 log 2 + log 3 - 1]

⇒ 2 = n (2 × 0.301 + 0.477 - 1)          (given)

⇒ 2 = n (0.602 + 0.477 - 1) = 0.079 n

⇒ n = 2/0.079 = 25.32

To ensure the amount reaches 100 times its initial value, the minimum number of years needed is 26.

This is because rounding off to 25 years would result in a compounded amount that is less than 100 times the initial value.

⇒ n = 26

∴ The value of n is 26.

Area of equilateral triangle (T) = √3/4 × a2

Area of regular hexagon (H) = (3√3)/2 × a2

Where a =  length of side

Calculation:

Let the side of the equilateral triangle = 3a

Area of equilateral triangle (T) = √3/4 × (3a)2 = (9√3)/4 × a2

Area of regular hexagon (H) = (3√3)/2 × a2

⇒  TH=9√34 × a23√32 × a2\frac{T}{H} = \frac{\frac{9√3}{4} \ ×\ a^2}{\frac{3√3}{2}\ \times \ a^2} =9√34×233= \frac{9√3}{4} \times \frac{2}{3\sqrt3} = 3/2

Hence, The required ratio is 3 : 2

Question 55

Two equal arcs of different circles C1 and C2 subtend angles of 60° and 75° respectively, at the centres. What is the ratio of the radius of C1 to the radius of C2?

  1. AOption (a)

    4 ∶ 5

  2. BOption (b)

    5 ∶ 4

  3. COption (c)

    1 ∶ 1

  4. DOption (d)

    3 ∶ 2

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

5 ∶ 4

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

For two equal arcs of different circles, the radius is inversely proportional to the angle subtended at the center.

Formula: r1θ1 = r2θ2

⇒ r1 × 60° = r2 × 75°

⇒ r1 / r2 = 75 / 60

⇒ r1 : r2 = 5 : 4

∴ The correct answer is 5 : 4.

Alternate Method

Given:

Two equal arcs are taken from two different circles C1 and C2.

Angle subtended by the arc of C1 at the centre = 60°

Angle subtended by the arc of C2 at the centre = 75°

Let the radii of C1 and C2 be r1 and r2, respectively.

Formula or Concept Used:

Arc length = r × θ

Since the two arcs are equal in length:

⇒ r1 × θ1 = r2 × θ2

Calculation:

⇒ r1 × 60° = r2 × 75°

⇒ r1 ÷ r2 = 75 ÷ 60

⇒ r1 ÷ r2 = 5 ÷ 4

⇒ r1 : r2 = 5 : 4

∴ The required ratio of the radius of C1 to the radius of C2 is 5 : 4.

Additional Information

Question 56

ABC is a triangle with sides AB = 41 cm, BC = 28 cm and CA = 15 cm. If D, E and F are the mid-points of AB, BC and CA respectively, then what is the area of the triangle DEF?

  1. AOption (a)

    63 square cm

  2. BOption (b)

    45 square cm

  3. COption (c)

    31.5 square cm

  4. DOption (d)

    22.5 square cm

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

31.5 square cm

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

The area of a triangle formed by joining the mid-points of the sides of a triangle is always 1/4th of the area of the original triangle.

Area of ΔDEF = 1/4 × Area of ΔABC

Semi-perimeter (s) of ΔABC = (41 + 28 + 15) ÷ 2 = 42 cm

Area of ΔABC = √[42 × (42 − 41) × (42 − 28) × (42 − 15)] = √[42 × 1 × 14 × 27] = 126 cm2

Area of ΔDEF = 126 ÷ 4 = 31.5 cm2

∴ The correct answer is 31.5 square cm.

Alternate Method

Given: Sides of ΔABC are a = 28 cm, b = 15 cm, and c = 41 cm. D, E, F are mid-points.

Formula Used: Heron's Formula: Area = √[s(s − a)(s − b)(s − c)], where s = (a + b + c)/2.

⇒ s = (28 + 15 + 41) ÷ 2

⇒ s = 84 ÷ 2 = 42 cm

⇒ Area of ΔABC = √[42 × (42 − 28) × (42 − 15) × (42 − 41)]

⇒ Area of ΔABC = √[42 × 14 × 27 × 1]

⇒ Area of ΔABC = √[(14 × 3) × 14 × (3 × 9)] = √[142 × 32 × 32]

⇒ Area of ΔABC = 14 × 3 × 3 = 126 cm2

⇒ Area of ΔDEF = (1/4) × Area of ΔABC

⇒ Area of ΔDEF = 126 ÷ 4 = 31.5 cm2

∴ The correct answer is 31.5 square cm.

    12 cm

  4. DOption (d)

    12.2 cm

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

11.2 cm

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Sides of a triangle = 13 cm, 14 cm, and 15 cm

Formula:

For triangle with 3 sides a, b & c,

Semi-perimeter, S = (a + b + c)/2

Area = S(S−a)(S−b)(S−c) \sqrt{S(S - a) (S - b)(S - c) }

Area = 1/2 × Base × Perpendicular

Concept:

The length of  a triangle's smallest altitude is always opposite its longest side.

Calculation:

Semi-perimeter of the triangle, S = (13 + 14 + 15)/2 = 21 cm

Area of the triangle = 21(21−13)(21−14)(21−15)\sqrt{21(21 - 13) (21 - 14) (21 - 15)}

⇒ Area of triangle =21×8×7×6\sqrt{21 × 8 × 7 × 6} = 84 cm2

Let, the smallest altitude (AD) = h cm

According to the question,

⇒ 1/2 × 15 × h = 84

⇒ h = 84/15 × 2 = 11.2 cm

∴ The smallest altitude of the triangle is 11.2 cm.

    7.64 cm

  4. DOption (d)

    7.84 cm

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

7.84 cm

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Difference between Circumference and Diameter = 16.8 cm.

Using the ratio method: (π − 1) × d = 16.8

⇒ (22/7 − 1) × d = 16.8

⇒ (15/7) × d = 16.8

⇒ d = (16.8 × 7) ÷ 15 = 1.12 × 7 = 7.84 cm.

∴ The correct answer is 7.84 cm.

Alternate Method

Given:

Circumference (C) − Diameter (d) = 16.8 cm

Formula Used:

Circumference of a circle = πd

Calculations:

⇒ πd − d = 16.8

⇒ d(π − 1) = 16.8

⇒ d(227\frac{22}{7} − 1) = 16.8

⇒ d(22−77\frac{22 - 7}{7}) = 16.8

⇒ d × 157\frac{15}{7} = 16.8

⇒ d = 16.8×715\frac{16.8 \times 7}{15}

⇒ d = 1.12 × 7

⇒ d = 7.84 cm

∴ The correct answer is 7.84 cm.

  1. AOption (a)

    10 cm

  2. BOption (b)

    9 cm

  3. COption (c)

    2√5 cm

  4. DOption (d)

    8 cm

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

9 cm

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Right angle triangle ABC, hypotenuse 3√5

If AB is doubled and BC is tripled then hypotenuse is 15

Formula used:

(hypotenuse)2 = (height)2 + (base)2

Calculation:

(3√5)2 = (AB)2 + (BC)2

⇒ 45 = (AB)2 + (BC)2  --(1)

If AB is doubled and BC is tripled then

⇒ (15)2 = (2AB)2 + (3BC)2

⇒ 225 = 4AB2 + 9BC2 --(2)

By subtracting eq (2) - {4 × eq(1)}

225 - 180 = 4AB2 + 9BC2 - 4AB2 - 4BC2

⇒ 45 = 5BC2

⇒ BC2 = 9

⇒ BC = 3 (side is always positive)

Put BC in eq (1)

45 - 9 =  (AB)2

⇒ AB = 6

Now AB + BC = 6 + 3 = 9 cm

∴ The correct answer is 9 cm

Shortcut TrickOriginal triangle (BC, AB, 3√5)

If AB is doubled and BC is tripled then (2AB, 3BC, 15)

(3BC, 2AB, 15) by observing this it is triplet of (9, 12, 15)

2AB = 12, 3BC = 9

AB = 6 cm, BC = 3 cm

AB + BC = 6 + 3 = 9 cm

  2. BOption (b)

    26%

  3. COption (c)

    27%

  4. DOption (d)

    28%

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

28%

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Radius of new sphere R = 3√(r13 + r23 + r33) = 3√(63 + 83 + 103) = 3√(216 + 512 + 1000) = 12 cm.

Sum of surface areas = 4π(62 + 82 + 102) = 4π(36 + 64 + 100) = 4π(200) = 800π.

New surface area = 4π(122) = 4π(144) = 576π.

Diminution % = [(800π − 576π) ÷ 800π] × 100 = (224 ÷ 800) × 100 = 28%.

∴ The correct answer is 28%.

Alternate Method

Given: Radii of three spheres r1 = 6 cm, r2 = 8 cm, r3 = 10 cm.

Formula Used: Volume of sphere = (4/3)πr3; Surface area = 4πr2.

⇒ Total Volume = (4/3)π(63 + 83 + 103) = (4/3)π(216 + 512 + 1000) = (4/3)π(1728) cm3.

⇒ Let R be the radius of the new sphere: (4/3)πR3 = (4/3)π(1728) ⇒ R3 = 1728 ⇒ R = 12 cm.

⇒ Sum of initial surface areas (S1) = 4π(62 + 82 + 102) = 4π(36 + 64 + 100) = 800π cm2.

⇒ Surface area of new sphere (S2) = 4π(122) = 4π(144) = 576π cm2.

⇒ Diminution in area = S1 − S2 = 800π − 576π = 224π cm2.

⇒ Percentage diminution = (224π ÷ 800π) × 100 = 28%.

∴ The correct answer is 28%.

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

1.00 cm

Why this answer is correct

Given:

A solid sphere of radius 3 cm is melted to form a hollow cylinder of height 4cm & external diameter 10cm.

Formula used:

Volume of sphere = 4/3π r3

Volume of hollow cylinder = π(R2 - r2)h

Thickness of cylinder = External radius - Internal radius

Calculation:

According to the question,

External diameter = 10cm

External radius = 10/2= 5cm

Volume of sphere = Volume of hollow cylinder

⇒ 4/3π (33) = π(52-r2)4

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

(x6 - y6)

Why this answer is correct

Given:

 x4 + x2y2 + y4, x3 + y3, x3 - y3

Concept:

LCM: It is the product of the greatest power of each prime factor,

involved in the numbers.

Formula Used:

(a4 + a2b2 + b4) = (a2 + ab + b2)(a2 - ab + b2)

(a2 - b2) = (a + b)(a - b)

(a3 - b3) = (a - b)(a2 + ab + b2)

(a3 + b3) = (a + b)(a2 - ab + b2)

Calculation:

x4  + x2y2 + y4 = (x2 + y2 - xy)(x2 + y2 + xy)

x3 + y3 = (x + y)(x2 - xy + y2)

x3 - y3 = (x - y)(x2 + xy + y2)

LCM = (x + y)(x - y)(x2 - xy + y2)(x2+ xy + y2)

LCM = (x2 - y2)(x4 + x2y2 + y4)

Again, we know that

a3 - b3 = (a - b)(a2 + ab + b2)

LCM = (x6 - y6)

∴ The correct answer is (x6 - y6).

Formula Used:

  1. (a + b)2 = a2 + b2 + 2ab
  2. (a - b)2 = a2 + b2 - 2ab
  3. (a2 - b2) = (a - b)(a + b)

Calculation:

 x2−y2−z2−2yzx2+y2−z2+2xy \frac{x^2-y^2-z^2-2 y z}{x^2+y^2-z^2+2 x y} + x2−y2−z2−2yzx2−y2+z2−2xz\frac{x^2-y^2-z^2-2 y z}{x^2-y^2+z^2-2 x z}

⇒ x2−(y2+z2+2yz)(x2+y2+2xy)−z2 \frac{x^2-(y^2+z^2+2 y z)}{(x^2+y^2+2 x y)-z^2} + x2−(y2+z2+2yz)(x2+z2−2xz)−y2\frac{x^2-(y^2+z^2+2 y z)}{(x^2+z^2-2 x z)-y^2}

⇒  x2−(y+z)2(x+y)2−(z)2 \frac{x^2-(y+z)^2}{(x+y)^2-(z)^2} +  x2−(y+z)2(x−z)2−(y)2\frac{x^2-(y+z)^2}{(x-z)^2- (y)^2}

By using the identity 3)

⇒(x+y+z)(x−y−z)(x+y−z)(x+y+z)\frac{(x + y + z)(x-y-z)}{(x+y-z)(x+y+z)} + (x−y−z)(x+y+z)(x−z+y)(x−y−z)\frac{(x-y-z)(x+y+z)}{(x-z+y)(x-y-z)}

⇒ (x−y−z)(x+y−z)\frac{(x-y-z)}{(x+y-z)} + (x+y+z)(x−z+y)\frac{(x+y+z)}{(x-z+y)}

⇒ x−y−z+x+y+zx+y−z\frac{x-y-z+x+y+z}{x+y-z}= 2xx+y−z\frac{2x}{x+y-z}

∴ The correct answer is 2xx+y−z\frac{2x}{x+y-z}.

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

Both 1 and 2

Why this answer is correct

Formula used:

a3 + b3 = (a + b)(a2 + b2 - ab)

a3 - b3 = (a - b)(a2 + b2 + ab)

Calculation:

Statement: 1 sin⁡3θ+cos⁡3θsin⁡θ+cos⁡θ+sin⁡θcos⁡θ\frac{\sin ^3 \theta+\cos ^3 \theta}{\sin \theta+\cos \theta}+\sin \theta \cos \theta = 1

Put θ = 45° [0< θ < π/2]

Sin 45° = 1/√2, Cos 45° = 1/√2

12√2 + 12√21√2 + 1√2\frac{1}{2√2}\ +\ \frac{1}{2√2}\over\frac{1}{√2}\ +\ \frac{1}{√2} +1√2×1√2\frac{1}{√2} \times \frac{1}{√2} = 22√22√2\frac{2}{2√2}\over\frac{2}{√2} + 1/2 = 1/2 + 1/2 = 1

Hence, Statement  1 is correct

Statement: 2 1 - Sin6 θ = Cos2 θ(Cos4 θ + 3 Sin2 θ)

LHS: 13 - (Sin2 θ)3

⇒ (1 -  Sin2 θ)[12 + (Sin2 θ)2 + Sin2 θ]

⇒ (1 -  Sin2 θ)[12 + Sin4 θ+ Sin2 θ]

RH:  (1 - Sin2 θ)[(1 - Sin2 θ)2 + 3 Sin2 θ]

⇒ (1 - Sin2 θ)[12 - 2Sin2 θ + (Sin2 θ)2 + 3 Sin2 θ]

⇒ (1 - Sin2 θ)[12 - 2Sin2 θ + Sin4 θ + 3 Sin2 θ]

⇒ (1 - Sin2 θ)[12 + Sin4 θ + Sin2 θ]

Hence statement 2 is correct

∴ Both the statement is correct

Question 72

If 7 sin4θ + 9 cos4θ + 42 sin2θ = 16, 0 < θ < π2\frac{\pi}{2}, then what is tan θ equal to ?

  1. AOption (a)

    1

  2. BOption (b)

    √2

  3. COption (c)

    √3

  4. DOption (d)

    13\frac{1}{\sqrt 3}

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

13\frac{1}{\sqrt 3}

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Putting θ = 30°,45°, 60° values one by one in given equation

θ = 30°

7 sin4θ + 9 cos4θ + 42 sin2θ

= 7 (1/2)4  + 9 (√3/2)4  + 42 (1/2)2

7/16 + 81/16 + 42/4 = 256/16 = 16 (satisfied)

So, tanθ = tan30° = 1/√3

Alternate Method

Given:

7 sin4 θ + 9 cos4 θ + 42 sin2 θ = 16

Formula used:

1) cos2 θ = 1 - sin2 θ

2) x=−b±√b2−4ac2ax = {-b ± √{b^2-4ac} \over 2a}

Calculation:

According to the question,

7 sin4 θ + 9 cos4 θ + 42 sin2 θ = 16

⇒ 7 sin4 θ + 9(cos2 θ)2 + 42 sin2 θ = 16

⇒ 7 sin4 θ + 9(1 - sin2 θ)2 + 42 sin2 θ = 16

Here, using the identity (a - b)2.

⇒ 7 sin4 θ + 9(1 - 2 sin2 θ + sin4 θ) + 42 sin2 θ = 16

⇒ 7 sin4 θ + 9 - 18 sin2 θ + 9 sin4 θ + 42 sin2 θ = 16

⇒ 16 sin4 θ + 24 sin2 θ - 7 = 0

Putting  sin2 θ = x

⇒ 16x2 + 24x - 7 = 0

Using Quadratic formula

x=−b±√b2−4ac2ax = {-b ± √{b^2-4ac} \over 2a}

Where, a = 16, b = 24, c = -7

⇒ x=−24±√242−[4×16×(−7)]2×16x = {-24 ± √{24^2-[4\times 16 \times (-7)]} \over 2 \times 16 }

⇒  x=−24±√576+44832x = {-24 ± √{576 + 448} \over 32}

⇒ - 24 ± √1024

⇒ −24±3232-24 \pm 32 \over 32

⇒ −24−3232-24 - 32 \over 32 or −24+3232-24 + 32 \over 32

⇒ −5632-56 \over 32 or  8328 \over 32

⇒ −74-7 \over4 or 141\over4

Solving above equation

⇒ x = −74-7 \over4 or  x =  141\over4

Since  0< θ < π2\pi \over2, θ lies in 1st quadrant

Thus, sin θ is positive

⇒ sin2 θ = 141\over4

⇒ sin θ √14√{\frac{1}{4}} = 121\over2

⇒ θ = 30°

⇒ tan θ = tan 30° = 1√3{\frac{1}{√ 3}}

∴ tan θ equal to 1√3{\frac{1}{√ 3}}

Question 73

An isosceles triangle has its base length 2a and its height is h. On each side of the triangle a square is drawn external to the triangle. What is the area of the figure thus formed?

  1. AOption (a)

    6a2 + 2h2 + 2ah

  2. BOption (b)

    6a2 + 2h2 + ah

  3. COption (c)

    4a2 + 2h2 + ah

  4. DOption (d)

    6a2 + h2 + ah

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

6a2 + 2h2 + ah

Why this answer is correct

Given:

An isosceles triangle has its base length 2a & its height is h.

Formula used:

Area of Triangle = 1/2 × base × height

Area of Square = side2

Calculation:

According to the figure,

Area of isosceles triangle = 1/2 × b × h

⇒ 1/2 × 2a × h  ( base = 2a)     .....(1)

Again, according to the figure,

By Pythagoras theorem

⇒ AC = √DC2 + AD2

⇒ AC = √a2 + h2

Then, Area of square drawn on AB & AC

Side2 = (√a2 + h2)2 = (a2 + h2)

Now, both side will be equal then,

Area = 2(a2 + h2)     .....(2)

Again, according to the figure,

Area of square drawn on BC which is (2a)2

Area of square = (2a)2 = (4a2)    .....(3)

By adding above equation (1), (2) & (3) we get,

Area of the figure,

(1/2 × 2a × h) + 2(a2 + h2) + (4a2)

⇒ ah + 2a2 + 2h2 + 4a2

⇒(2a2 +4a2) + 2h2 + ah

⇒ 6a2 + 2h2 + ah

∴ The area of the figure is  6a2 + 2h2 + ah

Question 74

If p=a2(b−a)(c−a)p=\frac{a^2}{(b-a)(c-a)}, q=b2(c−b)(a−b)q=\frac{b^2}{(c-b)(a-b)}, r=c2(a−c)(b−c)r=\frac{c^2}{(a-c)(b-c)}, then what is (p + q + r)2 equal to?

  1. AOption (a)

    9

  2. BOption (b)

    4

  3. COption (c)

    1

  4. DOption (d)

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

1

Why this answer is correct

Given:

p = a2(b−a)(c−a)\frac{a^2}{(b-a)(c-a)}, q = b2(c−b)(a−b)\frac{b^2}{(c-b)(a-b)}, r = c2(a−c)(b−c)\frac{c^2}{(a-c)(b-c)}

Calculation:

Let a = 1, b = 2, c = 3

According to the question,

⇒ p = 12(2−1)(3−1)\frac{1^2}{(2-1)(3-1)} = 12\frac{1}{2}

⇒ q = 22(3−2)(1−2)\frac{2^2}{(3-2)(1-2)} = -4

⇒ r = 32(1−3)(2−3)\frac{3^2}{(1-3)(2-3)} = 92\frac{9}{2}

Now, (p + q + r)2 = (12\frac{1}{2} - 4 + 92\frac{9}{2})2 = (1)2 = 1

∴ The value of (p + q + r)2 is 1.

  4. DOption (d)

    a - b + c + 1

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

a - b + c + 1

Why this answer is correct

Formula Used:

1. (a - b)2 = a2 + b2 - 2ab

2. a2 - b2 = (a + b)(a - b)

Calculation:

a2 - b2 - c2 + 2bc + a + b - c

⇒ a2 - (b2 + c2 - 2bc) + a + b - c

⇒ a2 - (b - c)2 + a + b - c

⇒ (a + b - c) (a - b + c) + (a + b - c)

⇒ (a + b - c) [(a - b + c) + 1]

∴ Factors of the given equation are (a + b - c) and (a - b + c + 1).

    x2 + (a2 + b2)x + a2b2 = 0

  2. BOption (b)

    x2 - (a2 + b2)x + a2b2 = 0

  3. COption (c)

    x2 - (a2 +  b2)x - a2b2 = 0

  4. DOption (d)

    x2 + (a2 + b2)x - a2b2 = 0

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

x2 - (a2 + b2)x + a2b2 = 0

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Roots of the equation 1x+a+b=1x+1a+1b\rm \frac{1}{x+a+b}=\frac{1}{x}+\frac{1}{a}+\frac{1}{b} are α and β

Where, a ≠ 0, b ≠ 0, x ≠ 0

Concept Used:

If the roots of a quadratic equation are p and q

Quadratic equation is →  x2 - (p + q)x + pq = 0

Calculation:

According to the question,

1x+a+b\frac{1}{x+a+b} = 1x+1a+1b\frac{1}{x}+\frac{1}{a}+\frac{1}{b}

⇒ 1x+a+b\frac{1}{x+a+b} - 1x\frac{1}{x} = 1a+1b\frac{1}{a}+\frac{1}{b}

⇒ x−(x+a+b)x(x+a+b)\frac{x-(x+a+b)}{x(x+a+b)} = a+bab\frac{a+b}{ab}

⇒ −(a+b)x(x+a+b)\frac{-(a+b)}{x(x+a+b)} = a+bab\frac{a+b}{ab}

⇒ x(x + a + b) = -ab

⇒ x2 + ax + bx + ab = 0

⇒ x(x + a) + b(x + a)  = 0

⇒ (x + a)(x + b) = 0

⇒ x = -a and x = -b

Thus, roots of the equation are α = -a and β = -b

⇒ α2 = a2 and β2 = b2

Quadratic equation whose roots are α2 and β2

⇒ x2 - (a2 + b2)x + a2b2 = 0

∴ The required quadratic equation is x2 - (a2 + b2)x + a2b2 = 0.

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

20

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

x=67−67−67−67−x\rm x=\frac{6}{7-\frac{6}{7-\frac{6}{7-\frac{6}{7-x}}}}

Clearly we can see, at x = 6,

LHS = RHS

Therefore,

x2 - 3x + 2 = 62 - 3 × 6 + 2

x2 - 3x + 2 = 36 - 18 + 2

∴ x2 - 3x + 2 = 20

Alternate MethodGiven:

x=67−67−67−67−x,x>1 x = \frac{6}{7 - \frac{6}{7 - \frac{6}{7 - \frac{6}{7 - x}}}}, x > 1

Calculate x2−3x+2 x^2 - 3x + 2

Concept Used:

Recurrence and simplification of nested fractions followed by algebraic simplification.

Calculation:

Let's solve the recurrence:

⇒ Let y=7−x y = 7 - x .

⇒ Then x=67−67−67−67−x x = \frac{6}{7 - \frac{6}{7 - \frac{6}{7 - \frac{6}{7 - x}}}}

⇒ Substitute y y back in, x=6y x = \frac{6}{y} where y=7−x y = 7 - x

⇒ x=67−x x = \frac{6}{7 - x}

⇒ x(7−x)=6 x(7 - x) = 6

⇒ 7x−x2=6 7x - x^2 = 6

⇒ x2−7x+6=0 x^2 - 7x + 6 = 0

⇒ (x−6)(x−1)=0 (x - 6)(x - 1) = 0

⇒ x=6 x = 6 or x=1 x = 1 (Since x>1 x > 1 , x=6 x = 6 )

Now, calculate x2−3x+2 x^2 - 3x + 2 :

⇒ Substitute x=6 x = 6 into x2−3x+2 x^2 - 3x + 2 ,

⇒ 62−3×6+2 6^2 - 3 \times 6 + 2

⇒ 36−18+2 36 - 18 + 2

⇒ 20 20

∴ x2−3x+2=20 x^2 - 3x + 2 = 20 .

Question 78

A train completely overtakes two persons, walking in the same direction with speeds 3 km/hr and 4 km/hr in 9 seconds and 758\frac{75}{8} seconds respectively. What is the length of the train?

  1. AOption (a)

    60 m

  2. BOption (b)

    62.5 m

  3. COption (c)

    55 m

  4. DOption (d)

    67.5 m

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

62.5 m

Why this answer is correct

Formula used:

Distance = Speed × Time

Concept used:

1. While a train crosses a person, it covers a distance equal to its length.

2. When two objects move in the same direction,

Relative speed = Speed1 - Speed2

3. Km/h = 5/18 m/sec

Calculation:

Let the speed of the train be 'x' km/h and the length of the train be 'L'

According to the question, overtakes 2 persons, walking in the same direction with speeds of 3 km/h & 4 km/h in 9 sec & 75/8 sec

Here, the distance covered is the length of the train

⇒ (x - 3) × 9/3600 = (x - 4) × 75/3600

⇒ (x - 3) × 9 = (x - 4)× 75/8

⇒ 24x - 72 = 25x - 100

⇒ x = 28 km/h

Length of train = [(x - 3) × 9/3600] km

⇒ Length of train = (28 - 3) × 1/400 km

⇒ Length of train = 25/400 = 1/16 km = 1/16 × 1000 = 62.5 m

∴ The length of the train is 62.5 m.

Question 79

A person bought an article and sold it at a profit of 20%. Had he bought it at 20% less, what would have been the profit percentage if the selling price had been the same?

  1. AOption (a)

    25%

  2. BOption (b)

    40%

  3. COption (c)

    50%

  4. DOption (d)

    60%

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

50%

Why this answer is correct

Concept Used:

SP = CP + Profit

Profit% = (Profit/CP) × 100

CP = Cost Price, SP = Selling Price

Calculation:

A person bought an article and sold it at a profit of 20%:

Let's consider CP1 is 100.

⇒ SP = 100 + 100 × (20/100) = 120

Had he bought it at 20% less:

⇒ CP2 = 100 - 100 × (20/100) = 80

Since he still sells it at the same selling price of 120,

⇒ Profit = 120 - 80 = 40

⇒ Profit% = (40/80) × 100 = 50%

∴ The Profit Percentage is 50%.

Shortcut Trick ⇒ SP / CP = (100 + 20) / (100 - 20)

⇒  SP / CP = 120 / 80

⇒ Profit% = [(120 - 80) × 100] / 80

⇒ 400 / 80 = 50%

∴ The profit percentage is 50%.

Question 80

If 2s = a + b + c, then what is s2 + (s - a)(s - b) + (s - b)(s - c) + (s - c)(s - a) equal to ?

  4. DOption (d)

    3(ab + bc + ca)

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

ab + bc + ca

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Given that,

2s = a + b + c

's' is not present in any option.

Therefore, Put s = 0.

⇒ 02 + (0 - a)(0 - b) + (0 - b)(0 - c) + (0 - c)(0 - a)

⇒ (-a)(-b) + (-b)(-c) + (-c)(-a)

⇒ ab + bc + ca

∴ The correct option is 2 which is ab + bc + ca.

Question 81

A sphere of radius 5 cm is dropped in a right circular cylindrical vessel partly filled with water. The radius of the cylindrical vessel is 10 cm. If the sphere is completely submerged in water, by how much will the level of water rise in the cylindrical vessel ?

  1. AOption (a)

    53cm\frac{5}{3} \rm cm

  2. BOption (b)

    52cm\frac{5}{2} \rm cm

  3. COption (c)

    1 cm

  4. DOption (d)

    56cm\frac{5}{6} \rm cm

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

53cm\frac{5}{3} \rm cm

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

According to Archimedes' principle, the volume of water displaced equals the volume of the submerged object.

Rise in water level (h) = Volume of sphere ÷ Base area of cylinder

⇒ h = [4/3 × π × (5)3] ÷ [π × (10)2]

⇒ h = (4/3 × 125) ÷ 100

⇒ h = 500 ÷ 300 = 5/3 cm

∴ The correct answer is 5/3 cm.

Alternate Method

Given:

Radius of the sphere (R) = 5 cm

Radius of the cylindrical vessel (r) = 10 cm

Let the level of water rise by 'h' cm.

Formula Used:

Volume of a sphere = 4/3 × π × R3

Volume of a cylinder = π × r2 × h

Calculation:

According to the principle of volume displacement, the volume of water displaced is equal to the volume of the completely submerged sphere.

⇒ Volume of water raised = Volume of the sphere

⇒ π × r2 × h = 4/3 × π × R3

⇒ π × (10)2 × h = 4/3 × π × (5)3

⇒ 100 × h = 4/3 × 125

⇒ h = 500 ÷ (3 × 100)

⇒ h = 5/3 cm

∴ The correct answer is 5/3 cm.

Additional Information

Volume of a Cylinder

The volume of a right circular cylinder is given by V = π × r2 × h, where r is the base radius and h is the height of the cylinder.

Volume of a Sphere

The volume of a sphere is given by V = 4/3 × π × r3, where r is the radius of the sphere.

Archimedes' Principle (Volume Displacement)

When a solid object is completely submerged in a liquid, it displaces a volume of liquid exactly equal to its own volume. Therefore, Volume of liquid displaced = Volume of submerged object.

    Both 1 and 2

  4. DOption (d)

    Neither 1 nor 2

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

Both 1 and 2

Why this answer is correct

Explanation:

Statement 1:

We know that, any angle in a major sector is always acute.

Therefore statement 1 is correct.

Statement 2:

We know that, if two sides of a pair of opposite sides of a cyclic quadrilateral are equal, then its diagonals are also equal.

∴ The correct option is 3.

Question 83

If a, b, c, x, y, z are real numbers such that (a + b + c)2 - 3(ab + bc + ca) + 3(x2 + y2 + z2) = 0, then which one of the following is correct?

  1. AOption (a)

    a = b = c, x = y = z ≠ 0

  2. BOption (b)

    a = b = c = 0, x = y = z = 1

  3. COption (c)

    a = b = c, x = y = z = 0

  4. DOption (d)

    a ≠ b ≠ c, x = y = z = 0

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

a = b = c, x = y = z = 0

Why this answer is correct

Given:

(a + b + c)2 - 3(ab + bc + ca) + 3(x2 + y2 + z2) = 0

Calculation:

We have

(a + b + c)2 - 3(ab + bc + ca) + 3(x2 + y2 + z2) = 0

We solve this question by options

If we put the value of option 3 then

a = b = c  = k (let) and x = y = z = 0

(k + k + k)2 - 3(k2 + k2 + k2) + 3(0)

⇒ (3k)2 - 3(3k2)

⇒ 9k2 - 9k2 = 0

∴ The correct option is 3.

Question 84

In a triangle ABC, angle B = 90° and p is the length of the perpendicular from B to AC. If BC = 10 cm and AC = 12 cm, then what is the value of p?

  1. AOption (a)

    5113 \frac{5 \sqrt{11}}{3}

  2. BOption (b)

    10113\frac{10 \sqrt{11}}{3}

  3. COption (c)

    4061 \frac{40}{\sqrt{61}}

  4. DOption (d)

    1225 \frac{12}{25}

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

5113 \frac{5 \sqrt{11}}{3}

Why this answer is correct

Given:

ABC is right angle triangle at angle B, BC = 10 cm

 AC = 12 cm, p is length of the perpendicular from B to AC

Formula used:

ArΔ = 1/2 × base × height

Calculation:

In an Δ ABC, by using the Pythagoras theorem

AC2 = AB2 + BC2

144 = AB2 + 100

AB2 = 44

AB = √44

Here, We can find the area in two ways,

  1. By taking AC as the base & length p as the perpendicular.

  2. By taking BC as base & AB as the perpendicular

As, Area (ΔABC) = Area (ΔABC)

⇒ 1/2 × 10 × √44 = 1/2 × 12 × p

⇒ 5 × 2√11 = 6p

⇒ p = (5√11)/3 cm

∴ The correct answer is (5√11)/3 cm

Question 85

The mean of p, q, r, s and t is 280. If the mean of p, r and t is 240, what is the mean of q and s?

  1. AOption (a)

    310

  2. BOption (b)

    320

  3. COption (c)

    330

  4. DOption (d)

    340

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

340

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Mean = {(280 × 5) - (240 × 3)} / 2 = 340

∴ The mean of q and s = 340.

Alternate Method

Formula Used:

Mean = The sum of numbers/The count of the numbers

Calculation:

According to the question

The mean of p, q, r, s, and t is 280

280 = (p + q + r + s + t)/5

⇒ p + q + r + s + t = 1400       ----(1)

Again, according to the question

The means of p, r, and t is 240

240 = (p + r + t)/3

⇒ 720 = p + r + t

Put this value in the equation (1)

⇒ 720 + q + s = 1400

⇒ q + s = 1400 - 720 = 680

∴ The mean of q and s = 680/2 = 340.

Consider the following for the next items that follow:

A, B, C, D, E, F and G are cousins. D is thrice as old as A. Further, C is as many years younger to B, as G to E and E to D. The average age of D and G is 16 years; the average age of A and E is 11 years; the average age of B and C is also 11 years. B and C have equal weight. A's weight is 10 kg less than that of B; D is 4 kg heavier than E; E is 4 kg heavier than F; F is 4 kg heavier than G. Further, D has age-weight ratio of 9 ∶ 20, where age is in years and weight in kg; A has age-weight ratio of 2 ∶ 5. Moreover, none of them is more than 40 kg.

Answer: (d)D.

18

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Age relations:

D = 3 × A

B - C = E - G = D - E

(D + G)/2 = 16, (A + E)/2 = 11 and (B + C)/2 = 11

Age : Weight of D = 9 : 20

Age : weight of A = 2 : 5

Calculations:

Age : weight of D = 9 : 20

So, Weight will be a multiple of 20 and weight can not exceed 40

Let the weight of D = 40 kg

So, age of D = 9 × 2 = 18 years

Answer: (c)C.

14

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Age relations: D = 3 × A

B - C = E - G = D - E

(D + G)/2 = 16, (A + E)/2 = 11 and (B + C)/2 = 11

Age : Weight of D = 9 : 20

Age : weight of A = 2 : 5

Formula used:

Average = Sum of observations/Number of observations

Calculations:

Age : weight of D = 9 : 20

So, Weight will be a multiple of 20 and weight can not exceed 40

Let the weight of D = 40 kg

So, age of D = 9 × 2 = 18 years

Also age of A = D/3 = 18/3 = 6 years

So, the weight of A = 5 × 3 = 15 kg

Age of E - Age of G = 16 - 14 = 2 years

Also from the given conditions,

B - C = 2     -----(1)

B + C = 22     -----(2)

From equation(1) and equation(2)

⇒ 2C = 20

⇒ C = 20/2 = 10

So, Age of B = 22 - 10 = 12

Total age of B, C, D, G, and E = 12 + 10 + 18 + 14 + 16 = 70

Average age = 70/5 = 14

Hence, the required average age is 14 years.

Weight relations:

Weight of B = Weight of C

A = B - 10, D = E + 4, E = F + 4 and F = G + 4

Age : Weight of D = 9 : 20

Age : weight of A = 2 : 5

Formula used:

Average = Sum of observations/Number of observations

Calculations:

Age : weight of D = 9 : 20

So, Weight will be a multiple of 20 and weight can not exceed 40

Let the weight of D = 40 kg

So, the weight of A = 5 × 3 = 15 kg

Weight of B = A + 10 = 25 kg

Weight of B = Weight of C = 25 kg

Now, E = D - 4

⇒ 40 - 4 = 36

Similarly, F = 32 and D = 28 years

PersonABCDEFG

Also, age of A = D/3 = 18/3 = 6 years

So, the weight of A = 5 × 3 = 15 kg

Weight of B = A + 10 = 25 kg

Weight of B = Weight of C = 25 kg

Now, E = D - 4

Total weight = 15 + 25 + 25 + 40 + 36 + 32 + 28 = 201

Average weight = 201/7

Hence, the average weight is 201/7 kg.

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

if the question cannot be answered even by using both the statements together.

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Statement 1

m = (1 - p) (p2 + p + 1)

n = (p + 1) (p2 - p + 1)

Statement 2

m = pn

Formula:

a3 - b3 = (a - b) (a2 + b2 + ab)

a3 + b3 = (a + b)(a2 + b2 - ab)

Calculation:

Statement: 1

m = (1 - p) (p2 + p + 1)

By using the above identities

m = (1 - p3)

n = (p + 1) (p2 - p + 1)

By using the above identities

n = (p3 + 1)

Since, we don't know wether p is +ve, -ve, integer or fraction

We can not conclude the relation on m & n

Statement: 2  m = pn

Here also, relation b/w m & n depend on only P. therefore

∴ The correct answer is option D.

    if the question cannot be answered even by using both the statements together.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

if the question can be answered by using either statement alone.

Why this answer is correct

Given:

One of the roots is  −4−102\frac{-4-\sqrt{10}}{2}

Statement-1 The product of the roots is −32(3+10)-\frac{3}{2}(3+\sqrt{10})

Statement-2 The sum of roots of the quadratic equation is -1.

Calculation:

According to the first statement

Let, the other root = a

⇒ a ×  −4−102\frac{-4-\sqrt{10}}{2}  = −32(3+10)-\frac{3}{2}(3+\sqrt{10})

⇒ a = −32(3+10)-\frac{3}{2}(3+\sqrt{10}) × 2−4−10\frac{2}{-4-\sqrt{10}}

This means the first statement is sufficient to answer.

According to the second statement

Let, the other root = a

⇒  −4−102\frac{-4-\sqrt{10}}{2} + a = -1

⇒ a = -1 -(−4−102\frac{-4-\sqrt{10}}{2})

This means the second statement is sufficient to answer.

∴ The correct answer is option 2

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

if the question can be answered by using both the statements together, but cannot be answered using either statement alone.

Why this answer is correct

Given:

A 3 digit number which is divisible by 10.

Calculation:

Let the three digit number be "xy0"

x = digit of hundred's place and y = digit of ten's place

According to Statement-1

When the digits of hundred's and ten's place interchanged, then

⇒ xy0 - yx0 = 180

⇒ (100x + 10y + 0) - (100y + 10x + 0) = 180

⇒ 90x - 90y = 180

⇒ x - y = 2     -----(1)

Statement-1 alone is not sufficient to get the values.

Now from Statement-2

Digit in hundred's place is halved and ten's and unit place interchanged,

⇒ xy0 - (x/2)0y = 336

⇒ (100x + 10y + 0) - (100x/2 + 10 × 0 + y) = 336

⇒ 100x + 10y - 50x - y = 336

⇒ 50x + 9y = 336     -----(2)

We got two linear equations using both the statement,

∴ Both statements are required to find the value of x and y.

∴ Question can be answered by using both the statements together.

Question 94

    if the question can be answered by using one of the statements alone, but cannot be answered using the other statement alone.

  2. BOption (b)

    if the question can be answered by using either statement alone.

  3. COption (c)

    if the question can be answered by using both the statements together, but cannot be answered using either statement alone.

  4. DOption (d)

    if the question cannot be answered even by using both the statements together.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

if the question can be answered by using one of the statements alone, but cannot be answered using the other statement alone.

Why this answer is correct

Given:

x = y = z and x, y, and z are real numbers

Formula used:

x2 + y2 + z2 - xy - yz - zx = 1/2[(x - y)2 + (y - z)2 + (z - x)2]

x3 + y3 + z3 - 3xyz = (x + y + z) (x2 + y2 + z2 - xy - yz - zx)

Calculation:

From statement (1)

We can write the identity as,

x2 + y2 + z2 - xy - yz - zx = 1/2[(x - y)2 + (y - z)2 + (z - x)2]

Now put x = y = z, we get

⇒x2 + y2 + z2 - xy - yz - zx  = 1/2 (0 + 0 + 0)

⇒ x2 + y2 + z2 - xy - yz - zx = 0

∴ The given question can be answered by this statement.

From statement (2)

x3 + y3 + z3 - 3xyz = (x + y + z) (x2 + y2 + z2 - xy - yz - zx)

i.e.

(x + y + z) (x2 + y2 + z2 - xy - yz - zx) = 0

thus, We observe two cases:

Case (I): (x + y + z = 0)

This doesn't necessarily imply x = y = z.

e.g. x = 1, y = 1 and z = -2 satisfied x + y + z = 0 but not equal

case (II): (x2 + y2 + z2 - xy - yz - zx) = 0

This is the same as Statement-I, which we've shown leads to (x = y = z).

Thus, from the statement (II) we can not say x = y = z

Hence, if the question can be answered by using one of the statements alone, but cannot be answered using the other statement alone.

∴ The correct answer is option (1).

Question 95

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

if the question can be answered by using both the statements together, but cannot be answered using either statement alone.

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Statements x+zy=zx\rm \frac{x+z}{y}=\frac{z}{x} and z−yx=xz\rm \frac{z-y}{x}=\frac{x}{z}

Calculation:

From statement-1 i.e.  x+zy=zx\rm \frac{x+z}{y}=\frac{z}{x}

⇒ x(x + z) = yz     -----(1)

⇒ x2 + xz = yz

⇒ x2 = z(y - x)     -----(2)

Statement-1 alone is not sufficient to answer the question.

From statement-2 i.e. z−yx=xz\rm \frac{z-y}{x}=\frac{x}{z}

⇒ x2 = z(z - y)     -----(3)

Equating eq(2) and eq(3)

⇒ z(y - x) = z(z - y)

⇒ y - x = z - y

⇒ z + x = 2y      -----(4)

Divide eq(1) by eq(4)

⇒ x(x+z)z+x=yz2y\frac{x(x + z)}{z+x} = \frac{yz}{2y}

⇒ x = z/2, which means x : z = 1 : 2

Put x = z/2 in eq(4)

⇒ 2y = z + x = 1 + 2 = 3

⇒ y = 3/2

Hence, x : y : z = 1 : 3/2 : 2 = 2 : 3 : 4

∴ The question can be answered by using both statements together, but cannot be answered using either statement alone.

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

if the question cannot be answered even by using both the statements together.

Why this answer is correct

Concept:

For two number a & b

LCM × HCF = a × b

Calculation:

Given that

Statement 1: LCM of the two numbers is 144

Statement 2: One of the numbers is 72

We can see, to find the other natural number, we need HCF also so that we can apply in the relation

LCM × HCF = a × b

∴ The correct answer is option 4

Question 97

Question: Is average of the largest and the smallest of 4 given numbers greater than the average of the 4 numbers?

Statement-I: The difference between the largest and the second largest numbers is less than the difference between the second smallest and the smallest of the numbers.

Statement-II: The difference between the largest and the smallest numbers is greater than the difference between the second largest and the second smallest of the numbers.

  1. AOption (a)

    if the question can be answered by using one of the statements alone, but cannot be answered using the other statement alone.

  2. BOption (b)

    if the question can be answered by using either statement alone.

  3. COption (c)

    if the question can be answered by using both the statements together, but cannot be answered using either statement alone.

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

if the question cannot be answered even by using both the statements together.

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Statement 1: The difference between the largest and the second largest numbers is less than the difference between the second smallest and the smallest of the numbers.

Statement 2: The difference between the largest and the smallest numbers is greater than the difference between the second largest and the second smallest of the numbers.

Let's analyze each statement:

Statement-I: The difference between the largest and the second largest numbers is less than the difference between the second smallest and the smallest of the numbers.

This statement doesn't provide direct information about whether the average of the largest and smallest numbers is greater than the average of all four numbers.

Statement-II: The difference between the largest and the smallest numbers is greater than the difference between the second largest and the second smallest of the numbers.

Similarly, this statement also doesn't directly give us the comparison of the averages.

Now, let's combine the statements:

By combining both statements, we understand that the differences between the largest and smallest numbers and between the second largest and second smallest numbers are related. However, this information alone doesn't allow us to determine whether the average of the largest and smallest numbers is greater than the average of all four numbers.

Therefore, the correct answer is option 4) if the question cannot be answered even by using both the statements together.

Question 98

Question: Is (a - b + c) > (a + b - c), where a, b and c are real numbers ?

Statement-I: b is negative.

Statement-II: c is negative.

  1. AOption (a)

    if the question can be answered by using one of the statements alone, but cannot be answered using the other statement alone.

  2. BOption (b)

    if the question can be answered by using either statement alone.

  3. COption (c)

    if the question can be answered by using both the statements together, but cannot be answered using either statement alone.

  4. DOption (d)

    if the question cannot be answered even by using both the statements together.

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

if the question cannot be answered even by using both the statements together.

Why this answer is correct

Calculation:

(a - b + c) > (a + b - c)

⇒ - b + c > b - c

⇒ -2b > -2c

⇒ b < c

Statement 1. b is negative.

Statement 2.  c is negative.

Both statements are not enough to give the correct answer.

∴ The correct answer is option 4

Question 99

Question: What is the cost of 15 pens, 21 pencils and 18 note books?

Statement-I: The cost of 7 pens, 6 pencils and 5 note books is 200.

Statement-II: The cost of 3 pens, 8 pencils and 7 note books is 210.

  1. AOption (a)

    if the question can be answered by using one of the statements alone, but cannot be answered using the other statement alone.

  2. BOption (b)

    if the question can be answered by using either statement alone.

  3. COption (c)

    if the question can be answered by using both the statements together, but cannot be answered using either statement alone.

  4. DOption (d)

    if the question cannot be answered even by using both the statements together.

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

if the question can be answered by using both the statements together, but cannot be answered using either statement alone.

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Statement 1 The cost of 7 pens, 6pencils, and 5 notebooks is 200

Statement 2 The cost of 3 pens, 8 pencils, and 7 notebooks is 210

Calculation:

Let, the cost of 1 pen, 1 pencil, and 1 notebook be Rs a, Rs b, and Rs c respectively

According to the question,

⇒ 7a + 6b + 5c = 200   ....(i)

⇒ 3a + 8b + 7c = 210   ....(ii)

If we add both equations

⇒ 10a + 14b + 12c = 410 ...(iii)

If we multiply 1.5 in the equation (iii)

⇒ 15a + 21b + 18c = 605

⇒ 15 pen + 21 pencil + 18 notebook = 615

∴ The correct answer is option 3

Question 100

Question: What is the area of the triangle inscribed in a semi-circle with the diameter as the base?

Statement-II: Two shorter sides of the triangle are 12 cm and 16 cm.

  1. AOption (a)

    if the question can be answered by using one of the statements alone, but cannot be answered using the other statement alone.

  2. BOption (b)

    if the question can be answered by using either statement alone.

  3. COption (c)

    if the question can be answered by using both the statements together, but cannot be answered using either statement alone.

  4. DOption (d)

    if the question cannot be answered even by using both the statements together.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

if the question can be answered by using one of the statements alone, but cannot be answered using the other statement alone.

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Statement 1 The diameter of semi- circle is 20 cm

Statement 2 Two shorter sides of the triangle are 12 cm and 16 cm

Formula used:

Area = 1/2 × (breath × height)

Calculation:

By using statement 2 alone

In an ΔOAB, OA ⊥ OB

Area = (1/2) × (12 × 16)

Area = 6 × 16 = 96 cm

As we can see, we can answer by using the statement 2 alone but can not answer by using the statement  1 alone. Therefore,

∴ The answer is option 1.
