UPPSC GIC Lecturer Preparation Guide

The Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission recruits Lecturers for Government Inter Colleges through a Preliminary–Mains structure. The Preliminary exam is objective and subject-heavy — the Subject Concerned section alone carries two-thirds of the Prelims marks.

Exam Pattern

120 objective questions worth 300 marks, attempted in 2 hours: General Studies (40 questions, 100 marks) and Subject Concerned (80 questions, 200 marks). Every question — in either section — is worth 2.5 marks, with 1/3rd negative marking (0.83 marks) for a wrong answer.

Candidates who clear the Prelims move to a descriptive Mains: General Hindi & Essay (100 marks) and a Subject Paper (300 marks), followed by document verification.

Preparation Strategy

  1. Put subject depth first: The Subject Concerned section is 80 of 120 Prelims questions and 200 of 300 marks. Work from post-graduate level material for your specific subject, not generic teaching-exam compilations.
  2. Respect the 1/3rd negative marking: At 2.5 marks per question, a wrong answer costs 0.83 marks — leave a question blank rather than guess unless you can eliminate at least two options.
  3. Don't neglect General Studies entirely: It's the smaller section, but 100 marks from Current Affairs, History, Geography, Polity, Economy and General Science is still a tenth of your total Prelims-plus-Mains score.
  4. Practise at exactly one minute per question: 120 questions in 120 minutes leaves no room for a slow start — time full-length attempts strictly.
  5. Start Mains preparation early, in parallel: The Mains subject paper (300 marks) is descriptive and tests the same subject at greater depth — begin long-form answer writing well before Prelims results, not after.
  6. Track UPPSC's own notification for the current cycle: Question distribution and negative marking for UPPSC exams are occasionally revised between cycles — confirm the current pattern in the notification before finalising your strategy.

Sectional Notes

General Studies — Current Affairs, Indian History, Geography, Indian Polity, Economy, General Science, Environment, and Basic Computer Knowledge.

Subject Concerned — Graduate and post-graduate level content for the subject you applied for (English, Economics, Physics, Civics, Hindi and others).

Mains (descriptive) — General Hindi & Essay, and an in-depth Subject Paper for candidates who clear the Prelims.
