UPPSC Assistant Professor Preparation Guide

UPPSC recruits Assistant Professors for Government Degree Colleges through a Prelims–Mains–Interview structure. The Prelims is qualifying only, which changes how you should pace your preparation between it and the Mains.

Exam Pattern

120 objective questions worth 150 marks in 2 hours: General Studies (30 questions, 60 marks) and the Optional Subject (90 questions, 90 marks), taken in a single sitting. Negative marking of roughly 1/3rd applies. The Prelims only shortlists for the Mains — its score doesn't carry forward to final merit.

Preparation Strategy

  1. Prioritise your Optional Subject: It's 90 of 120 Prelims questions and continues to dominate the Mains — depth here matters more than anywhere else in the exam.
  2. Don't over-invest in Prelims once you're confident of clearing it: Since Prelims marks don't count toward final merit, shift preparation time to Mains-level subject depth once you're reasonably sure of qualifying.
  3. Build General Studies from a fixed, finite base: Indian History, the National Movement, World Geography and the Indian Constitution are well-defined topics — a structured static-GK routine covers this section efficiently.
  4. Start Mains preparation in parallel, not after Prelims results: The Mains subject paper demands NET/Ph.D.-level depth — this takes months to build and shouldn't wait for Prelims clearance to begin.
  5. Practise UGC-NET-standard subject questions: Since the Optional Subject is pitched at NET/Ph.D. level, standard graduate-level material under-prepares you — use NET-tier resources for your subject from the start.
  6. Prepare for the interview as a distinct, later-stage skill: It rewards articulate subject knowledge and awareness of the academic/teaching context — begin structuring answers only once you're through Mains, but don't leave it entirely for the last week.

Sectional Notes

General Studies — Indian History, the Indian National Movement, World Geography, and the Indian Constitution.

Optional Subject — Content at UGC-NET/Ph.D. standard for the subject you applied for.
