Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the UP TGT exam structure, eligibility requirements, rules, and timelines.

The UPSESSB written examination has 125 objective questions carrying 500 marks in total — 4 marks per question — to be attempted in 2 hours. The paper covers the teaching subject you applied for alongside General Awareness, English and Quantitative Aptitude.

Each question carries 4 marks, which is what makes 125 questions add up to the full 500-mark paper. Because a single question is worth four times what a mark is worth in most competitive exams, a handful of careless errors moves your rank far more than it would elsewhere.

It is not subject-only. Alongside your chosen teaching subject the paper carries General Awareness, English and Quantitative Aptitude, so candidates who prepare only their specialism leave marks on the table. Note that UPSESSB has been revising the pattern, including the introduction of negative marking — always confirm the current notification before finalising your strategy.

You need a bachelor's degree in the subject you are applying to teach, plus the training qualification specified for the post. The minimum age is 21 years, with the upper limit and category relaxations set out in the UPSESSB notification. Requirements vary by subject, so check the notification for your specific post.

UPSESSB conducts TGT recruitment across a wide range of teaching subjects including Science, Mathematics, Hindi, English, Social Science, Commerce and Art. You sit the paper for the single subject you applied for, so subject-specific practice matters more than generic teaching-exam material.
