OSSSC Assistant Revenue Inspector Preparation Guide

The Odisha Sub-Ordinate Staff Selection Commission recruits Assistant Revenue Inspectors, Revenue Inspectors and Amins through a single Combined Recruitment Examination. It runs in three stages: a Preliminary paper, a Main written examination, and a qualifying computer skill test.

Exam Pattern

Preliminary Examination — 100 objective questions in 90 minutes, split across six areas:

SectionQuestions
Mathematics20
General Studies20
English20
Odia15
Computer15
Logical Reasoning10

Main Written Examination — 180 questions for 180 marks, drawn from General Knowledge, Arithmetic, English, Odia and Computer.

Negative marking: 0.33 marks deducted per wrong answer at both stages.

Practical Skill Test — Basic Computer Skills, qualifying only, minimum 40%.

Preparation Strategy

  1. Prepare Odia as a scoring subject, not a formality: Odia is a separate 15-question block in Prelims and a full subject in the Mains. For a native speaker these are among the fastest and most reliable marks in the paper, but only with deliberate grammar and usage revision — assumed fluency is not the same as exam accuracy.
  2. Attempt against the one-third penalty: Three wrong answers cancel one correct answer at both stages. Track accuracy alongside score in every mock, and leave a question blank rather than guessing when you cannot eliminate at least two options.
  3. Bank Computer and Logical Reasoning early in the paper: These 25 Prelims questions are the least time-hungry in the paper. Clearing them quickly protects the minutes that Mathematics and General Studies genuinely need.
  4. Build Odisha general knowledge deliberately: State history, geography, districts, culture, economy and government schemes appear within General Studies and recur across both stages. National GK material alone leaves a visible gap here.
  5. Carry Prelims subjects straight into Mains: The Mains covers the same subject families at greater length — 180 questions instead of 100. Plan one continuous syllabus, then increase depth and practice volume after Prelims rather than switching to fresh material.
  6. Practise computer skills on real software: The skill test needs 40% to pass and eliminates otherwise-successful candidates. Spend regular time actually operating documents, spreadsheets and presentations rather than only reading about them.

Sectional Notes

Mathematics / Arithmetic — Number system, percentage, ratio and proportion, average, time and work, simple and compound interest, and mensuration.

General Studies — Indian history, geography, polity, economy, general science, current affairs, and Odisha-specific general knowledge.

English — Comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, error detection and sentence improvement.

Odia — Grammar, comprehension, vocabulary and usage.

Computer — Fundamentals, MS Office, internet and operating systems, mirroring what the practical skill test assesses.

Logical Reasoning — Analogies, series, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense and syllogism.
