KPSC Group C Preparation Guide

The Karnataka Public Service Commission recruits for a wide range of Group C posts through a two-paper written exam. Paper II's three-way split between Kannada, English and Computer Knowledge is the detail candidates most often under-prepare for.

Exam Pattern

Two papers of 100 marks each, 200 marks total, 2 hours per paper. Paper I is General Knowledge; Paper II splits into General Kannada (35 marks), General English (35 marks) and Computer Knowledge (30 marks). Each correct answer earns 1 mark, with 0.25 marks deducted for a wrong one.

Preparation Strategy

  1. Don't treat Paper II as a formality: At 100 marks, it's exactly as heavy as Paper I. Candidates who focus only on General Knowledge routinely lose ground here.
  2. Build Karnataka-specific General Knowledge: The GK paper leans on the state's own current events and development issues, not just national-level GK — state-specific sources matter more here than for many other PSC exams.
  3. Practise Computer Knowledge as a scoring section: At 30 marks, it's a smaller, finite topic area — basic computer fundamentals and applications are quick to prepare and easy to convert into reliable marks.
  4. Balance English and Kannada preparation: Both carry equal weight (35 marks each). Candidates strong in one often neglect the other — dedicate separate practice time to each rather than assuming general language ability covers both.
  5. Respect the 0.25 negative marking on both papers: Guess only when you can confidently eliminate at least one option.
  6. Time each paper independently: With 2 hours per paper and roughly 100 questions each, aim for just over a minute per question, leaving a buffer for review.
