JKSSB Junior Assistant Preparation Guide
The Jammu & Kashmir Services Selection Board recruits Junior Assistants through an 80-question written paper followed by a qualifying typing and computer skill test. The paper is unusually tightly timed — 80 questions in 80 minutes — and one full quarter of it is specific to the Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory.
Exam Pattern
80 objective questions, 80 marks, 80 minutes, split into four equal sections of 20 marks:
- General English
- General Awareness (with special reference to J&K UT)
- Numerical & Reasoning Ability
- Basic Concepts of Computers
A penalty of 0.25 marks applies to each wrong answer.
Skill test: typing at a minimum of 35 words per minute, plus computer applications. Qualifying only — the marks do not enter the merit list.
Preparation Strategy
- Own the J&K Awareness section: A full 20 marks — a quarter of the paper — covers Jammu & Kashmir's history, geography, culture, economy and current affairs. It is the section least served by generic clerical-exam material and the one where a focused candidate gains the clearest edge, so give it dedicated study rather than folding it into general GK.
- Budget exactly one minute per question: With 80 questions in 80 minutes there is no slack at all. Practise with a running clock and a hard rule to abandon any question that passes ninety seconds — a single stubborn puzzle can cost you three easy marks elsewhere.
- Bank the Computers section fast: Fundamentals, MS Office, internet basics, operating systems and terminology are pure recall and can be answered in well under a minute each. Clearing this section quickly is what buys the time that Numerical and Reasoning need.
- Guard accuracy against the 0.25 penalty: Four wrong answers cancel a correct one. Track your accuracy percentage in every mock, not just the score, and cut attempts in whichever section your accuracy falls below about 70%.
- Build typing speed from the start: The skill test requires 35 words per minute and eliminates candidates who cleared the written paper. Ten to fifteen minutes of daily typing practice throughout preparation is far more effective than trying to build speed in the weeks after the result.
- Alternate full mocks with sectional drills: Take complete 80-minute papers to train pace, then use sectional practice to repair whichever of the four sections your mock analysis shows as weakest — with equal 20-mark weights, the weakest section is always the highest-value thing to fix.
Sectional Notes
General English — Reading comprehension, grammar, error correction, vocabulary and sentence structure.
General Awareness (J&K UT focus) — Regional history, geography, culture, economy and current affairs, alongside national general knowledge.
Numerical & Reasoning Ability — Number system, percentage, ratio and proportion, average, time and work, simple and compound interest; plus analogies, series, coding-decoding, blood relations, direction sense and syllogism.
Basic Concepts of Computers — Fundamentals, MS Office, internet, operating systems and common computer terminology.
