BSSC CGL Preparation Guide
BSSC CGL's Preliminary exam is qualifying only, but its unusually high 4-marks-per- question scoring means accuracy matters just as much here as in the Mains that actually decides your rank.
Exam Pattern
Preliminary: 150 objective questions worth 600 marks (4 marks per correct answer, 1 mark deducted for a wrong one), attempted in 2 hours 15 minutes — qualifying only. Mains follows with a 100-question, 400-mark Hindi language paper (Paper I) and a second paper mirroring the Prelims pattern across General Studies, Science/Mathematics and Mental Ability (Paper II).
Preparation Strategy
- Don't under-rate the Prelims because it's "just qualifying": At 4 marks a question, the margin for careless errors is much smaller than in typical 1- or 2-mark exams — treat every question with real care.
- Start Mains Hindi preparation in parallel: Paper I is a dedicated 400-mark Hindi language paper — don't wait for Prelims results to begin building this, since it needs its own preparation track distinct from Paper II's General Studies content.
- Clear the Paper I threshold with margin: You need at least 30% in Paper I to be considered — treat this as a real hurdle, not a formality.
- Reuse your Prelims preparation for Mains Paper II: Since Paper II mirrors the Prelims sections, strong Prelims prep in General Studies, Science/Mathematics and Mental Ability carries forward directly.
- Respect the negative marking in both stages: A wrong answer at 4 marks each in Prelims is expensive — guess only when you can eliminate at least one option.
- Time yourself at 54 seconds a question for Prelims: 150 questions in 135 minutes is tight — full-length timed practice matters here more than in most other exams.
