APPSC Group 4 Preparation Guide

APPSC Group 4 has a three-stage structure that surprises many first-time candidates: the Screening Test you prepare for first doesn't count toward your final rank at all — the Mains does.

Exam Pattern

Screening Test: 150 objective questions across two papers (100 + 50 questions), worth 150 marks, covering General Studies, Mental Ability, General English and General Telugu — this stage is purely qualifying and shortlists candidates for the Mains. Mains: two papers of 150 marks each (300 marks total) decide the final merit. A Computer Proficiency Test (CPT) follows as a final qualifying hurdle.

Preparation Strategy

  1. Understand that Screening only gets you to the start line: Since its marks don't carry forward, treat it as a hurdle to clear comfortably, not a score to maximise beyond what's needed to qualify.
  2. Start Mains preparation early, in parallel with Screening: Because Screening marks don't count, over-investing in incremental Screening practice at the expense of Mains preparation is a common, costly mistake.
  3. Build strong General Telugu fundamentals: It's a distinct, exam-specific section that national-level competitive exam material doesn't cover — dedicate separate practice time to it.
  4. Don't defer Computer Proficiency Test prep: It's qualifying, not scored, but failing it after clearing Mains wastes the entire effort — build basic computer proficiency well before you need it.
  5. Practise Mental Ability as a fast, scoring section: It rewards pattern recognition and speed more than deep content knowledge — timed practice sets build this faster than theory review.
  6. Keep current affairs coverage broad: The syllabus explicitly spans national, international and regional current affairs — don't limit preparation to Andhra Pradesh-specific news alone.

Sectional Notes

General Studies — Broad general knowledge and current affairs.

Mental Ability — Logical and analytical reasoning.

General English — Language and grammar at a general graduate level.

General Telugu — Language and grammar at a general graduate level.

Current Affairs — National, international and regional developments.
