RRB NTPC (Non-Technical Popular Categories) Exam Guide 2026
Overview
The RRB NTPC exam is conducted by the Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) under the Indian Railways to fill thousands of vacancies in Non-Technical Popular Categories — posts that form the operational and administrative backbone of Indian Railways. Graduate and undergraduate posts have separate recruitment notices; check the CEN you applied under.
Eligibility:
- Nationality: Indian citizen
- Age: Depends on the CEN, post and reference date, with applicable category relaxations; do not reuse a past cycle’s special age relaxation
- Education: Varies by post — see table below

Two-Tier CBT (Computer-Based Test) System
CBT 1 — Stage 1 (Common for All Posts)

- Duration: 90 minutes (120 minutes for candidates eligible to use a scribe)
- Negative Marking: 1/3rd mark deducted per wrong answer
- Purpose: Screening. CEN 07/2025 specifies shortlisting at 15 times community-wise vacancies, subject to the Railways’ stated adjustment provisions.
- Normalization: Marks are normalised across shifts to account for varying difficulty levels.
CBT 2 — Stage 2 (Post-Category Specific)
For Graduate Posts:

- Negative marking: 1/3 mark per wrong answer. The sectional split is indicative.
Post-Specific Skill Tests
Typing applies only to designated typist posts. CEN 07/2025 specifies 30 words per minute in English or 25 in Hindi; it is qualifying. Trains Clerk and Commercial cum Ticket Clerk do not acquire a typing requirement merely because they are undergraduate posts.
Station Master is a graduate post. Refer to the separate graduate CEN for its aptitude-test and merit rules; the undergraduate notice does not define those rules.

Mathematics
- Number Systems, Decimals, Fractions, LCM & HCF, Ratio & Proportion, Percentage, Mensuration (2D+3D), Time & Work, Time & Distance, Simple & Compound Interest, Profit & Loss, Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Statistics (Mean, Median, Mode).
General Intelligence & Reasoning
- Analogies, Number & Alphabetical Series, Coding-Decoding, Mathematical Operations, Relationships, Syllogism, Venn Diagrams, Data Interpretation & Sufficiency, Jumbling, Puzzles, Directions.
General Awareness
- Current Affairs (national + international, last 6 months), Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology — Class 10 level), Environmental Science, History & Freedom Struggle, Geography, Polity & Governance, Computer & Applications, Indian Economy, Sports & Awards, Culture, Famous Personalities.
Railway-Specific GK (high priority for Stage 2): History of Indian Railways, Railway Zones & Headquarters, Types of trains, Railway Budget history, safety measures, major rail projects (Vande Bharat, Kavach).
Phase-Wise Preparation Strategy
Phase 1 (Months 1–3): Fundamentals
- Complete Mathematics NCERT Class 10 fully. Solve 50 Quant questions daily using topic-wise sets.
- Complete Reasoning chapter-wise from any standard book (RS Aggarwal or MK Pandey).
- Start Current Affairs: Read a monthly capsule (GK Today or Adda247). Target 60–70% score in GA from day 1.
Phase 2 (Months 4–6): Stage-Specific Preparation
- Switch to RRB NTPC previous year papers (last 5 years minimum).
- Practise 5 CBT 1 mocks per week, focusing on accuracy over speed initially.
- If targeting Station Master: Begin CBAT practice using Railway CBAT prep modules available on Testbook.
Phase 3 (Final 4 Weeks): Mock Tests + GK Revision
- Daily: 1 full CBT mock + 30-min GA revision.
- Review incorrect and slow answers by topic. Normalisation and category-wise cutoffs mean one raw-score target cannot guarantee shortlisting.
Practise RRB NTPC previous-year papers, checking the paper’s stage and recruitment cycle before comparing scores.
