RRB Junior Engineer recruitment runs on a two-stage CBT structure where only CBT-2 counts toward your final rank — a distinction that should reshape how you split your preparation time between the two stages.

Exam Pattern

CBT-1 (qualifying only): 100 questions in 90 minutes — Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, and General Awareness & General Science. CBT-2 (merit-determining): 150 questions in 120 minutes — General Awareness, Physics & Chemistry, Computer Applications, Environment & Pollution Control, and branch-specific Technical Abilities. Both stages carry 1/3rd negative marking per wrong answer.

Preparation Strategy

Clear CBT-1 with margin, then pivot hard to CBT-2: Since CBT-1 marks don't carry forward, over-optimising it at the expense of CBT-2 preparation is a common mistake — aim comfortably above the expected cutoff, then shift focus.
Start Technical Abilities preparation early: It's the CBT-2 section unique to your engineering branch and typically the most content-heavy — begin well before CBT-1 results, using the gap productively.
