UP Police Sub Inspector (SI) Preparation Guide

The Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board (UPPRPB) selects Sub Inspectors through a single written exam with no negative marking, followed by physical standards and efficiency tests. The written exam's per-section qualifying cutoff is the detail most candidates underestimate.

Exam Pattern

160 objective questions worth 400 marks, attempted in 2 hours, split evenly across four sections of 40 questions / 100 marks each: General Hindi, Basic Law/Constitution & General Knowledge, Numerical Ability, and Mental Aptitude/Reasoning. Each correct answer is worth 2.5 marks, with no negative marking.

Candidates must clear a 35% qualifying mark in every individual section, plus 50% overall — a single weak section can disqualify you even with a strong total score.

Preparation Strategy

1. Treat all four sections as must-clear, not just must-score: Because of the 35% per-section cutoff, a section you're weak in can eliminate you regardless of how well you do elsewhere. Diagnose your weakest section first and bring it above the cutoff with margin before optimising your strongest one.
2. Attempt every question: With no negative marking, an educated guess (or even a blind one on a question you'll otherwise skip) can only help your score.
3. Build UP-specific General Knowledge: The Basic Law/Constitution & GK section leans on Uttar Pradesh state facts, current affairs and constitutional basics — generic national-level GK material under-covers this.
4. Practise Numerical Ability at SSC-level difficulty: The quantitative section mirrors SSC-style arithmetic and data interpretation rather than advanced mathematics — timed practice sets are more useful than theory-heavy books.
5. Start physical preparation alongside written prep, not after: The Physical Efficiency Test (a timed run) and Physical Standard Test happen after the written exam but on a fixed timeline — beginning conditioning only after results are out leaves too little time.
6. Time yourself at 45 seconds a question: 160 questions in 120 minutes is tight; full-length timed mocks are the only reliable way to build the speed this pattern demands.

Sectional Notes

General Hindi — Grammar, comprehension and vocabulary at a general graduate level.

Basic Law/Constitution & General Knowledge — Indian Constitution basics, criminal law fundamentals relevant to policing, and Uttar Pradesh–focused current affairs and GK.

Numerical Ability — Arithmetic, percentage, ratio, average and basic data interpretation.

Mental Aptitude/Reasoning — Analytical and logical reasoning, verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
