UP Home Guard Preparation Guide

The Uttar Pradesh Home Guard recruitment is unusual among government exams for its simplicity: one subject, no negative marking, and a single written stage before a qualifying physical test.

Exam Pattern

100 objective questions, 100 marks, 120 minutes. One mark for each correct answer, no negative marking. The entire paper is General Knowledge — there is no separate reasoning, English, or quantitative section.

Candidates scoring below 25% are not eligible for enrolment regardless of later stages.

Preparation Strategy

  1. Attempt every question: With no negative marking and a full 120 minutes for 100 questions (over a minute each), there is no scenario where guessing costs you anything. Never leave a question blank.
  2. Build broad current affairs coverage: Since the entire paper is General Knowledge, a steady daily current-affairs habit over the months before the exam does more than any last-minute cramming session.
  3. Don't neglect static GK for current affairs: Indian history, geography, polity and general science are as heavily represented as recent events. A balance of static and current material covers the paper more completely than either alone.
  4. Clear the 25% floor comfortably, not exactly: The qualifying threshold is a hard cut, not a target — prepare to clear it with real margin so an unusually difficult paper on the day doesn't put you at risk.
  5. Start physical preparation alongside written study: The Physical Efficiency Test is qualifying but real — height and chest measurements for male candidates, height and weight for female candidates. Fitness preparation takes months to show results, so begin it during written preparation, not after the result.
  6. Practise full 120-minute mocks: Since the paper is entirely one subject, pacing errors are more about attention span than switching between question types — full-length timed practice builds the endurance the real exam needs.

What to Study

General Knowledge for this exam spans current affairs, Indian history, geography, polity, Uttar Pradesh-specific general knowledge, and general science — treat it as one continuous subject rather than separate sections, since the real paper does not divide it that way.
