RPF SI Preparation Guide
The Railway Protection Force's Sub Inspector exam packs a wide General Awareness section into a single 90-minute CBT, alongside the more standard Arithmetic and Reasoning sections found in most competitive exams.
Exam Pattern
120 objective questions worth 120 marks in 90 minutes: Arithmetic (35 questions), General Intelligence and Reasoning (35 questions), and General Awareness (50 questions). Each wrong answer costs 1/3rd of a mark.
Preparation Strategy
- Weight your prep toward General Awareness: At 50 of 120 questions, it's the single largest section — current affairs and static GK deserve proportionally more time than the other two sections combined would suggest.
- Guess only when you can eliminate an option: With 1/3rd negative marking, blind guessing across 120 questions can cost more than it gains.
- Practise Arithmetic at SSC-level difficulty: The quantitative section mirrors standard competitive-exam arithmetic rather than advanced mathematics.
- Build reasoning speed, not just accuracy: 35 reasoning questions in a 90-minute paper rewards pattern recognition under time pressure — timed sectional practice helps more than untimed accuracy drills.
- Start physical preparation alongside written prep: The Physical Efficiency Test and Physical Measurement Test follow the CBT on a fixed timeline — begin conditioning early rather than after results.
- Time yourself at 45 seconds a question: 120 questions in 90 minutes leaves no room for a slow start — full-length timed mocks are essential.
Sectional Notes
Arithmetic — Basic numerical ability and quantitative aptitude.
General Intelligence and Reasoning — Verbal and non-verbal reasoning.
General Awareness — Current affairs and general knowledge, the largest section.
