ESIC UDC Preparation Guide

The Employees' State Insurance Corporation recruits Upper Division Clerks through a three-stage process: a qualifying Phase I (Prelims), a merit-deciding Phase II (Mains), and a qualifying computer skill test. Understanding which stage actually decides your selection is the single most useful thing to get right before you start studying.

Exam Pattern

Phase I — Preliminary Examination (qualifying)

100 objective questions worth 2 marks each, to be attempted in 60 minutes, spread across four sections: General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Comprehension. One-fourth of the marks for a question is deducted for a wrong answer — at 2 marks per question that is a 0.5 mark penalty, which makes loose guessing costly.

Phase I marks do not carry into the final merit. Clearing it comfortably is the goal; maximising it is not.

Phase II — Main Examination (decides the merit list)

The same four subjects scale to 200 questions across 120 minutes, with the same 1/4 negative marking. Your entire ranking comes from this paper.

Computer Skill Test (qualifying)

Practical work in MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint. Marks are not counted, but candidates who clear Mains do get eliminated here, so it deserves genuine practice rather than a last-week skim.

Preparation Strategy

1. Build the Mains base first: Because Phase II alone decides your rank, plan your syllabus coverage around Mains depth from day one and treat Prelims as a speed test layered on top of that same base, rather than studying twice.
2. Fix a sectional time budget: With 100 questions in 60 minutes you have roughly 36 seconds per question in Prelims. Practise with a per-section clock — about 15 minutes each — so that a slow Quantitative Aptitude set never eats the English section you could have cleared.
3. Make General Awareness your scoring engine: It is the only section answered from recall rather than calculation, so it is where time is won. Cover current affairs of the last 6–8 months plus static Indian polity, history, geography, and economy, and add ESIC's own schemes and social security framework, which are routinely asked.
4. Drill accuracy against the negative marking: Track attempts versus accuracy in every mock, not just raw score. A 1/4 penalty means a candidate attempting 80 with 85% accuracy outscores one attempting 95 with 70% accuracy — the arithmetic should shape how aggressively you attempt.
5. Practise the computer skill test on real files: Spend an hour a week actually creating and formatting documents, spreadsheets with basic formulas, and slide decks. Reading about MS Office does not transfer to a timed practical test.
6. Sit full-length mocks under exam conditions: Take complete 60-minute Prelims and 120-minute Mains papers in one sitting, then analyse every wrong answer for whether it was a knowledge gap, a silly error, or a bad time decision, and fix the largest bucket first.

Sectional Notes

General Intelligence and Reasoning — Analogies, series, coding-decoding, blood relations, syllogism, and non-verbal reasoning. Puzzles and seating arrangements carry the most marks per unit of practice, so they repay dedicated drilling.

Quantitative Aptitude — Simplification, number system, percentage, ratio and proportion, time and work, and data interpretation. Memorising tables to 20, squares to 30, and common fraction-to-percentage conversions removes most of the time pressure.

English Comprehension — Reading comprehension, error spotting, fill in the blanks, synonyms and antonyms, and sentence improvement. Grammar rules for error spotting are a small, finite, high-yield list; prioritise them over open-ended vocabulary building.

General Awareness — Current affairs, Indian history, geography, polity, economy, general science, plus ESIC and social security schemes specifically.
