Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the ESIC UDC exam structure, eligibility requirements, rules, and timelines.

ESIC UDC recruitment runs in three stages. Phase I (Prelims) has 100 objective questions carrying 2 marks each across four sections — General Intelligence and Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and English Comprehension — to be attempted in 60 minutes, with a penalty of one-fourth mark for every wrong answer. Phase II (Mains) scales the same four subjects up to 200 questions over 120 minutes, again with 1/4 negative marking. A computer skill test follows.

No. Phase I is purely qualifying — it only decides who advances. The final merit list is prepared from the Phase II (Mains) marks alone, so Prelims should be treated as a speed-and-accuracy filter to clear comfortably rather than a stage to maximise.

You need a Bachelor's degree from a recognised university plus working knowledge of computer office applications. The age limit is 18 to 27 years, with the usual relaxations — 3 years for OBC, 5 years for SC/ST, and 10 years for PwBD candidates. Only Indian citizens may apply.

It is qualifying only — the marks are not added to your final score. It is still worth real practice, since candidates who clear Mains do get eliminated here for neglecting MS Word, MS Excel, and MS PowerPoint basics.

The post sits at Pay Level 4 of the 7th Central Pay Commission, with a pay scale of ₹25,500–₹81,100 and an entry-level basic pay of ₹25,500 per month. With dearness allowance, HRA, and other allowances, the approximate gross in-hand salary works out to roughly ₹38,000–₹44,000 per month depending on posting city.

One-fourth (0.25) of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for each wrong answer, in both Phase I and Phase II. Because Prelims questions carry 2 marks each, a wrong answer there costs 0.5 marks — so blind guessing is expensive and unattempted questions carry no penalty.
