Overview
JEE Main is the first stage of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for admission to undergraduate engineering and architecture courses in NITs, IIITs, and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) in India. It is also the eligibility test for JEE Advanced.
Exam Pattern
The exam is conducted as a Computer Based Test (CBT).
Exam Structure (B.E./B.Tech)
- Duration: 180 minutes (3 hours)
- Total Marks: 300 Marks
- Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics
- Sections: Each subject has:
- Section A: 20 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
- Section B: 10 Numerical Value Questions (attempt any 5)
Detailed Syllabus
The JEE Main syllabus is based on the NCERT Class 11 and 12 curriculum for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
1. Physics
General Physics, Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Work, Power, and Energy, Rotational Motion, Gravitation, Properties of Solids and Liquids, Thermodynamics, Kinetic Theory of Gases, Oscillations and Waves, Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents, Electromagnetic Waves, Optics, Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter, Atoms and Nuclei, Electronic Devices, Communication Systems.
2. Chemistry
Physical Chemistry: Basic concepts in Chemistry, States of Matter, Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure, Chemical Thermodynamics, Solutions, Equilibrium, Redox Reactions, and Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, Surface Chemistry. Inorganic Chemistry: Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties, General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Metals, Hydrogen, s-block elements, p-block elements, d- and f- block elements, Co-ordination Compounds, Environmental Chemistry. Organic Chemistry: Purification and Characterisation of Organic Compounds, Some Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry, Hydrocarbons, Organic Compounds Containing Halogens, Organic Compounds Containing Oxygen, Organic Compounds Containing Nitrogen, Polymers, Biomolecules, Chemistry in Everyday Life, Principles Related to Practical Chemistry.
3. Mathematics
Sets, Relations and Functions, Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations, Matrices and Determinants, Permutations and Combinations, Mathematical Induction, Binomial Theorem and its Simple Applications, Sequences and Series, Limit, Continuity and Differentiability, Integral Calculus, Differential Equations, Co-ordinate Geometry, Three Dimensional Geometry, Vector Algebra, Statistics and Probability, Trigonometry, Mathematical Reasoning.
Marking Scheme
- Correct Answer: +4 Marks
- Negative Marking: -1 Mark for each wrong answer.
- Unanswered: 0 Marks.
