JEE Advanced Guide 2026

Overview

JEE Advanced is the second and final stage of the Joint Entrance Examination, conducted for admission to undergraduate engineering, science, and architecture programs at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Only candidates who qualify JEE Main and fall within the announced rank cutoff are eligible to appear.

Exam Pattern

The exam is conducted as a Computer Based Test (CBT) in two compulsory papers.

Exam Structure

  • Paper 1: 180 minutes (3 hours), 48 questions, 180 marks
  • Paper 2: 180 minutes (3 hours), 54 questions, 180 marks
  • Total: 360 minutes across both papers, 102 questions, 360 marks
  • Subjects: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics — each worth 60 marks per paper
  • Question types: Single correct answer, multiple correct answer (partial marking), numerical value, and matching-list or paragraph/comprehension-based questions. The exact mix of question types per section changes from year to year.

Detailed Syllabus

The syllabus is based on the Class 11 and 12 NCERT curriculum for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics — the same broad subjects as JEE Main, but questions probe deeper conceptual application and multi-step problem solving.

1. Physics

Units and Measurement, Kinematics, Laws of Motion, Work Energy and Power, Rotational Motion, Gravitation, Mechanics of Solids and Fluids, Thermal Physics, Oscillations and Waves, Electrostatics, Current Electricity, Magnetism, Electromagnetic Induction and AC, Optics, Modern Physics.

2. Chemistry

Physical Chemistry: Basic Concepts, Gaseous and Liquid States, Atomic Structure, Chemical Bonding, Energetics, Chemical Equilibrium, Electrochemistry, Chemical Kinetics, Solid State, Solutions, Surface Chemistry, Nuclear Chemistry. Inorganic Chemistry: Isolation of Metals, Periodic Table, Chemical Bonding, Hydrogen, s-block and p-block Elements, Transition Elements, Coordination Compounds, Extraction Metallurgy, Principles of Qualitative Analysis. Organic Chemistry: Basic Principles, Preparation and Properties of Hydrocarbons, Halogen/Oxygen/Nitrogen Containing Compounds, Polymers, Biomolecules, Practical Organic Chemistry.

3. Mathematics

Algebra, Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry (2D and 3D), Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, Vectors, Probability and Statistics, Matrices and Determinants.

Marking Scheme

Unlike a single fixed rule, marking varies by question type and by year — always check the official information bulletin for the exact scheme in a given year. As a general pattern:

  • Single correct answer: +3 for correct, -1 for incorrect.
  • Multiple correct answer: Full marks for all correct options selected; partial marks for selecting only some of the correct options (e.g. +1 to +3 depending on how many are chosen), with no or capped negative marking for an incorrect selection.
  • Numerical value: +3 for correct, typically no negative marking.
  • Matching-list / paragraph-based: Marking scheme varies by year, generally along similar full/partial-credit lines as multiple correct questions.

Eligibility

Candidates must qualify JEE Main (Paper 1) and rank within the number of top candidates declared eligible for JEE Advanced that year, in addition to meeting the age and number-of-attempts criteria set each year.

Preparation Strategy

  1. Build on JEE Main Prep: JEE Advanced tests the same subjects at greater depth — strengthen fundamentals from JEE Main prep before moving to advanced problem sets.
  2. Master Multiple Question Formats: Practice multiple-correct, numerical-value, and matching-list questions specifically, since their scoring and elimination strategy differs from plain MCQs.
  3. Time Management Across Two Papers: Simulate the two-paper, six-hour exam day with full-length mocks so pacing across both papers becomes second nature.
  4. Selective Attempting: Because negative marking and partial credit vary by question type, practice deciding when to attempt a partially-known multiple-correct question versus leaving it blank.
