Overview

The State Bank of India PO exam is among the most prestigious banking recruitments in India, filling Probationary Officer positions directly under one of the world's largest public sector banks. Unlike IBPS PO, SBI conducts its own independent recruitment. An SBI PO joins as a Junior Management Grade Scale-I (JMGS-I) officer with a clear career trajectory to General Manager and beyond.

The 3-Stage Selection Process

SBI PO is unique in using a Phase 3 Group Exercise & Discussion Test (GBDT) before the interview, unlike IBPS PO's direct interview format.

Stage 3 — Group Exercise & Discussion (GBDT) + Interview

GBDT (Group Business Discussions Test):

  • Groups of 10–12 candidates discuss a banking/business topic.
  • Duration: 20 minutes (5 min preparation + 15 min discussion).
  • Evaluated on: communication, leadership, analytical thinking, listening skills.
  • Marks: 20 out of 100 (Phase 3 total).

Personal Interview:

  • Marks: 30 out of 100 (Phase 3 total).
  • Focus: Banking knowledge, current affairs, self-introduction, situational questions.

Final Merit = Phase 2 Objective (75 marks) + Phase 2 Descriptive (25 marks) + Phase 3 (GBDT 20 + Interview 30 = 50 marks). Total = 150 marks.

Reasoning & Computer Aptitude

  • Reasoning: Puzzles (Multi-variable, Uncertain-number types), Seating Arrangements, Blood Relations, Directions, Input-Output, Syllogism, Critical Reasoning, Course of Action.
  • Computer Aptitude: Basic computer concepts, MS Office suite, Networking basics, Internet protocols, Keyboard shortcuts, Number systems (Binary, Octal), Data Representation.

Data Analysis & Interpretation

  • Complex DI: Caselet, Missing DI, Mix-graphs (Bar + Line), Radar Charts.
  • Arithmetic: Time & Work, Partnerships, Percentages, SI/CI, Boats & Streams.
  • Data Sufficiency, Quantity-1 vs Quantity-2.

English Language

  • Reading Comprehension (Story-based, Economy-based), Para Jumbles, Error Identification, Sentence Improvement, Cloze Test, Word Usage in Context.
  • Descriptive: Formal/Informal letters (SBI frequently tests bank-related letters — complaint to branch manager, application for loan), essays on current banking themes (UPI, financial inclusion, digital banking).

General, Economy & Banking Awareness

  • RBI Monetary Policy (Repo, Reverse Repo, CRR, SLR, OMO), SEBI regulations, NABARD schemes, India's GDP data, National Financial Inclusion schemes (Jan Dhan, PM Mudra, Stand-Up India), recent bank amalgamations, Budget highlights, Global financial institutions.

Phase-Wise Preparation Strategy

Phase 1 (Months 1–2): Prelims Mastery

  • Complete 300 Reasoning puzzles across all types (linear, circular, floor, box, tabular).
  • Revise 15 Arithmetic chapters with shortcut methods.
  • Read The Hindu Business Line daily — minimum 30 minutes.
  • Target accuracy: 85%+ in English sectional mocks.

Phase 2 (Months 3–4): Mains Depth

  • Daily DI practice: 4 complete sets — caselet, mixed graph, bar, and table.
