IBPS RRB Office Assistant Preparation Guide

IBPS conducts this exam to recruit Office Assistants for Regional Rural Banks — it has no connection to the Railway Recruitment Board despite the shared "RRB" abbreviation. With no interview stage, the Main exam alone decides your final rank.

Exam Pattern

Preliminary: 80 questions (Reasoning and Numerical Ability, 40 each) in 45 minutes, qualifying only. Main: 200 marks covering Reasoning, Computer Knowledge, General Awareness, Language and Numerical Ability, in 120 minutes — this is what determines your final merit. Both stages carry 0.25 negative marking per wrong answer.

Preparation Strategy

  1. Treat Prelims as a speed test, Mains as the real exam: Prelims only qualifies you; all your rank depends on Mains. Once you're confident of clearing Prelims comfortably, shift most preparation time to Mains topics.
  2. Don't skip General Awareness: It's unique to Mains (not tested in Prelims) and often under-prepared relative to Reasoning and Numerical Ability — banking/financial current affairs specifically pay off here.
  3. Build genuine local-language proficiency early: Office Assistant posts require proficiency in the local language of the RRB's state — confirm this requirement for your target RRB well before applying, since it's an eligibility condition, not just an exam topic.
  4. Practise Computer Knowledge as a high-yield Mains section: It's a finite topic area compared to Reasoning or Numerical Ability, and rewards focused, short preparation.
  5. Guess only when you can eliminate options: With 0.25 negative marking active in both stages, blind guessing at scale costs more than it gains.
  6. Time Prelims strictly: 80 questions in 45 minutes is tight — under 34 seconds per question — so timed sectional practice matters more here than for most other exams.

Sectional Notes

Reasoning — Puzzles, seating arrangement, syllogism, logical reasoning (both stages).

Numerical Ability — Simplification, number series, data interpretation (both stages).

Computer Knowledge — Basic computer fundamentals and banking-relevant applications (Mains only).

General Awareness — Current affairs with a banking and financial focus (Mains only).

Language — English or Hindi language proficiency (Mains only).
