EPFO Assistant Exam Guide 2026
Overview
The EPFO Assistant exam is conducted by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO), Ministry of Labour and Employment, to recruit Assistants — a post since redesignated Social Security Assistant (SSA) — for its regional and district offices across India. It is a separate recruitment from the UPSC-conducted EPFO exams for EO/AO, APFC, and Personal Assistant.
Exam Pattern
1. Preliminary Examination (Qualifying)
- 100 questions, 100 marks, 60 minutes.
- Sections: English Language (30), Reasoning Ability (35), Numerical Aptitude (35) — each with its own 20-minute time limit.
- Prelims marks are not counted toward the final merit list; you only need to clear the sectional and overall cut-offs to advance.
2. Main Examination
- Builds on the Prelims subjects and adds a General/Financial Awareness section plus a descriptive English component (typed online — short essay/letter).
- Final selection is based entirely on Mains performance.
Detailed Syllabus
- English Language: Reading Comprehension, Cloze Test, Error Spotting, Fill in the Blanks, Vocabulary (synonyms/antonyms), Sentence Improvement.
- Reasoning Ability: Puzzles, Seating Arrangement, Syllogism, Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, Inequalities, Direction Sense.
- Numerical Aptitude: Simplification, Number Series, Data Interpretation, Percentage, Profit & Loss, Ratio & Proportion, Time & Work, Time Speed & Distance.
- General/Financial Awareness (Mains): Current Affairs, EPF Act & Social Security Schemes, Banking and Financial Awareness, Static GK.
- Descriptive English (Mains): Essay and letter writing, typed online.
Marking Scheme
- Negative Marking: 0.25 marks deducted for every wrong answer in the objective sections.
Preparation Strategy
- Master Sectional Timing: Since each Prelims section has its own fixed 20-minute window, practice every section against the clock individually rather than treating the paper as one flexible 60-minute block.
- Prioritize Numerical Aptitude Speed: This is typically the most time-pressured section — drill simplification, approximation, and number series until you can answer without full written calculation.
- Build Reasoning Puzzle Stamina: Seating arrangement and puzzle sets take the longest per question; practice recognizing puzzle types quickly so you can skip low-yield sets under time pressure.
- Don't Neglect Mains Early: Since Prelims marks don't carry forward, start layering in General/Financial Awareness revision and descriptive English writing practice as soon as you're clearing Prelims-level mocks comfortably.
- Full-Length Mocks Under Real Conditions: Take timed, sectionally-locked mock tests regularly to simulate the actual sectional-cutoff pressure rather than only practicing topic-wise question sets.
