Overview

Bank of India recruits Probationary Officers through its PGDBF (Post Graduate Diploma in Banking and Finance) route, running its own selection process rather than recruiting through a common written exam. Selection runs in three stages: an online examination combining objective and descriptive papers, followed by a Group Discussion and then a Personal Interview.

Exam Pattern

The online examination is worth 225 marks in total — 200 marks objective plus a 25-mark descriptive paper — across 210 minutes.

English Language: Reading Comprehension, Para Jumbles, Cloze Test, Error Spotting, Sentence Improvement, Vocabulary and Word Usage.
Reasoning: Puzzles, Seating Arrangement, Syllogism, Coding-Decoding, Blood Relations, Inequalities, Input-Output, Data Sufficiency, Critical Reasoning.
Computer Aptitude: Computer fundamentals, operating systems, MS Office, internet and networking, database basics, security.
General/ Economy/ Banking Awareness: Current Affairs, banking and financial awareness, RBI and monetary policy, government schemes, static GK.
Data Analysis & Interpretation: Tabular, bar, line, pie and caselet DI, Data Sufficiency, Quantity Comparison, arithmetic word problems, Number Series, Approximation.
Descriptive English: Letter writing and essay, typed online.

Marking Scheme

Negative Marking: one-fourth of the marks assigned to a question is deducted for a wrong answer. Because sections carry different per-question weights, a wrong answer in Data Analysis & Interpretation costs materially more than one in General Awareness.

Preparation Strategy

Weight Your Study Time by Section Marks, Not Question Count: Reasoning and Computer Aptitude and Data Analysis & Interpretation carry 60 marks each against 40 each for English and General Awareness. DI in particular packs 60 marks into only 35 questions, making it the highest-value section per question in the paper.
Rehearse Against Sectional Clocks From Day One: With hard per-section windows, time saved in an easy section cannot be spent on a hard one. Practise each section as a standalone timed paper at its exact real duration rather than taking untimed mixed sets.
Build a Skip Discipline for Heavy Sets: Puzzles and caselet DI sets can consume ten minutes for a handful of marks. Learn to classify a set's difficulty within the first thirty seconds and move on, since an abandoned set in a timed section is unrecoverable.
Keep General Awareness on a Daily Cycle: At 40 questions in 35 minutes, this is the fastest section to clear and the one most sensitive to recent current affairs. A short daily revision habit converts directly into marks that require no calculation time.
Practise the Descriptive Paper by Typing: The letter and essay are typed, not handwritten, in 30 minutes. Draft under timed conditions in a plain text editor so that structure and word count become automatic and typing speed is not the bottleneck.
