If the diagonal of a cube is of length l, then the total surface area of the cube is

  1. AOption (a)

    3 l2

  2. BOption (b)

    \(\sqrt 3 ;{l^2}\)

  3. COption (c)

    \(\sqrt 2 ;{l^2}\)

  4. DOption (d)

    2 l2

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

2 l2

Why this answer is correct

Let the side of the given cube be ‘a’ units.

⇒ Side of cube = CH = HG = FG = a units

In ∆CHG,

⇒ CG2 = CH2 + HG2 = a2 + a2 = 2a2

Now, in ∆CGF,

⇒ CF2 = CG2 + FG2 = 2a2 + a2 = 3a2

⇒ Diagonal of cube = CF = a√3 units

⇒ l = a√3

⇒ a = l/√3 units

∵ There are six faces is a cube,

∴ Total surface area of cube = 6a2 = 6(l2/3) = 2l2

Question 1482

Combined Defence Services (CDS) 2018• Elementary Mathematics• Elementary Mathematics

An equilateral triangle, a square and a circle have equal perimeter. If T, S and C denote the area of the triangle, area of the square and area of the circle respectively, then which one of the following is correct?

  1. AOption (a)

    T < S < C

  2. BOption (b)

    S < T < C

  3. COption (c)

    C < S < T

  4. DOption (d)

    T < C < S

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

T < S < C

Why this answer is correct

Let the perimeter of triangle, square and circle be equal to ‘x’ cm

Perimeter of equilateral triangle = 3(side) = x

⇒ Side of equilateral triangle = x/3

⇒ Area of equilateral triangle = (√3/4) × (side)2 = (√3/4) × (x2/9) = x2/12√3

⇒ T ≅ 0.048x2     ...1)

Similarly,

Perimeter of square = 4(side) = x

⇒ Side of square = x/4

⇒ Area of square = (side)2 = x2/16

⇒ S = 0.0625x2     ...2)

Also,

Perimeter of circle = 2π(radius) = x

⇒ Radius of circle = x/2π

⇒ Area of circle = π(radius)2 = π × x2/4π2 = x2/4π

⇒ C ≅ 0.0795x2     ...3)

∴ Comparing equation (1), (2) and (3), we can write, T < S < C

Question 1483

The areas of two similar triangles are (7 – 4√3) cm2 and (7 + 4√3) cm2 respectively. The ratio of their corresponding sides is

  1. AOption (a)

    7 – 4√3

  2. BOption (b)

    7 – 3√3

  3. COption (c)

    5 – √3

  4. DOption (d)

    5 + √3

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

7 – 4√3

Why this answer is correct

As we know, ratio of areas of two similar triangles is equal to the square of the ratio of their corresponding sides,

We can write,

⇒ (Ratio of corresponding sides)2 = Ratio of areas

⇒ (Ratio of corresponding sides)2 = (7 – 4√3) / (7 + 4√3)

⇒ (Ratio of corresponding sides)2 = [(7 – 4√3) / (7 + 4√3)] × [(7 – 4√3) / (7 – 4√3)]

⇒ (Ratio of corresponding sides)2 = (7 – 4√3)2 / [(7 + 4√3)(7 – 4√3)]

∵ (a + b)(a – b) = (a2 – b2)

⇒ (Ratio of corresponding sides)2 = (7 – 4√3)2 / (49 – 48)

⇒ (Ratio of corresponding sides)2 = (7 – 4√3)2

∴ Ratio of corresponding sides = (7 – 4√3)

Question 1484

Combined Defence Services (CDS) 2018• Elementary Mathematics• Elementary Mathematics

The chord of a circle is √3 times its radius. The angle subtended by this chord at the minor arc is k times the angle subtended at the major arc. What is the value of k?

  1. AOption (a)

    5

  2. BOption (b)

    2

  3. COption (c)

    1/2

  4. DOption (d)

    1/5

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

2

Why this answer is correct

Let AB be the chord and O be the centre of the circle, as shown below,

⇒ OA = OB = radius of circle = r (let)

⇒ AB = r√3

As we know, the perpendicular drawn from the centre of the circle to a chord bisects the chord and the two triangles so formed are congruent,

⇒ AE = BE = AB/2 = r√3/2

⇒ ∠AOE = ∠BOE

In ∆AOE,

⇒ sin ∠AOE = AE/OA

⇒ sin ∠AOE = (r√3/2) /r = √3/2

⇒ sin ∠AOE = sin 60°

⇒ ∠AOE = 60°

⇒ ∠AOB = 60° + 60° = 120°

Now, the angle subtended by a chord at the centre of the circle is equal to twice the angle subtended by the chord at some other point in the same segment of the circle,

⇒ ∠ACB = (∠AOB) /2 = 120°/2 = 60°

∵ ACBD is a cyclic quadrilateral, its opposite angles are supplementary

⇒ ∠ADB = 180° – ∠ACB = 180° – 60° = 120°

But,

Angle subtended by chord AB in minor arc = k(Angle subtended by chord AB in a major arc)

⇒ ∠ADB = k (∠ACB)

⇒ 120° = k (60°)

⇒ k = 2

In ΔABC, the sides AB, AC are produced and the bisectors of exterior angles of ∠ABC and ∠ACB intersect at D. If ∠BAC = 50°, then ∠BDC is equal to

  1. AOption (a)

    115°

  2. BOption (b)

    65°

  3. COption (c)

    55°

  4. DOption (d)

    40°

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

65°

Why this answer is correct

Short trick∶

∠BDC = 90° – ∠A/2 = 90° – 25° = 65°

Detailed solution∶

In the figure given below,

∵ Sum of angles of triangle = 180°

⇒ ∠ABC + ∠ACB = 180° – 50° = 130°     ...1)

Also, sum of angles in straight line = 180°

⇒ ∠DBC = (180° – ∠ABC) /2

⇒ ∠DCB = (180° – ∠ACB) /2

Adding the two equations, we get,

⇒ ∠DBC + ∠DCB = 180° – (∠ABC + ∠ACB) /2

Substituting from (1),

⇒ ∠DBC + ∠DCB = 180° – 130°/2 = 180° – 65° = 115°

∴ ∠BDC = 180° – (∠DBC + ∠DCB) = 180° – 115° = 65°

Why this answer is correct

Let the co-ordinates of the points P be (x, y), A be (a, 0) and B be (0, b)

Given, PA2 + PB2 = k (constant)

⇒ (x – a)2 + y2 + x2 + (y – b)2 = k

⇒ x2 – 2ax + a2 + y2 + x2 + y2 – 2by + b2 = k

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

405π cm2

Why this answer is correct

Let ‘r’ be the radius of the small circle and MN is the tangent to the two equal semi-circles, as shown in the figure given below,

⇒ ∠OMP = ∠OMQ = 90°

⇒ MN = Radius of bigger semi-circle = 108/2 = 54 cm

⇒ Radius of two equal semi-circles = PX = PM = QM = QY = 54/2 = 27 cm

⇒ Radius of small circle = OX = OY = ON = r

Considering ∆OMP,

⇒ OP = OX + PX = (27 + r) cm

⇒ OM = MN – ON = (54 – r) cm

Applying Pythagoras theorem,

⇒ OP2 = OM2 + PM2

⇒ (27 + r)2 = (54 – r)2 + (27)2

⇒ (27)2 + r2 + 54r = (54)2 + r2 – 108r + (27)2

⇒ 162r = (54)2

⇒ r = 54/3 = 18 cm

∵ Area of semi-circle = (π/2) × (radius)2

⇒ Area of bigger semi-circle = (π/2) × (54)2 = 1458π cm2

⇒ Area of small semi-circles = (π/2) × (27)2 = 729π/2 cm2

⇒ Area of small circle = π × (18)2 = 324π cm2

∴ Area of shaded region = 1458π – 2(729π/2) – 324π = 1458π – 1053π = 405π cm2

Given, AB = BC = AC = 30 cm

Also, (XY + XP + YQ) = 40 cm

∵ XY is parallel to BC and remaining two sides are common,

⇒ ∆ABC and ∆AXY are similar triangles, i.e., ∆AXY is also an equilateral triangle

⇒ XY = AX = BY

Similarly, ∆BXP and ∆QYC are also similar to ∆ABC and are equilateral triangles,

⇒ XP = BX = BP

⇒ YQ = YC = QC

Now,

⇒ AB = AX + XB = XY + XP     ...1)

⇒ AC = AY + YC = XY + YQ     ...2)

⇒ BC = BP + PQ + QC

⇒ BC = XP + PQ + YQ     ...3)

Adding equation (1), (2) and (3),

⇒ AB + AC + BC = 2(XY + XP + YQ) + PQ

Substituting values,

⇒ 30 + 30 + 30 = 2(40) + PQ

∴ PQ = 90 – 80 = 10 cm

    \(9\frac{5}{6}\) cm2

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

\(9\frac{5}{7}\) cm2

Why this answer is correct

Area of square = (side)2 = (4)2 = 16 cm2

The sum of the area of four quadrants of a circle removed from the corners of the square is equal to the area of the circle of diameter 2 cm

⇒ Radius of circle = diameter/2 = 2/2 = 1 cm

⇒ Area of circle = π(radius)2 = 22/7 cm2

∴ Area of shaded region = Area of square – 2(Area of circle) = 16 – 44/7 = 68/7 = \(9\frac{5}{7}\) cm2
