Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

5

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut TrickWe have,

 20+20+20+… ∞\rm\sqrt{20+\sqrt{20+\sqrt{20+ \dots \ \infty}}},

Find two factors of 20 such that their difference is 1.

The larger factor will be the solution for expression.

Factors of 20 = 4 × 5

⇒ x2 - 20 = 5

∴ x = 5

Alternate MethodConcept:

If y = a+a+…∞\sqrt {a + \sqrt{a + \dots \infty}}

⇒ y =  4a+1+12\frac{\sqrt{4a+1}+1}{2}

Calculation:

We have

x2 - 20 =20+20+20+… ∞\rm\sqrt{20+\sqrt{20+\sqrt{20+ \dots \ \infty}}}

Using the above concept, (a = 20)

⇒ x2 - 20 = 4(20)+1+12\frac{\sqrt{4(20)+1}+1}{2}

⇒ x2 - 20 = 81+12=102=5 \frac{\sqrt 81+1}{2} = \frac{10}{2}=5

⇒ x2 = 25

∴  x = 5

Question 2

If a+bb+c=c+dd+a\rm \frac{a+b}{b+c}=\frac{c+d}{d+a} a ≠ c, then which one of the following is correct ?

  1. AOption (a)

    a + b = c + d

  2. BOption (b)

    a + c = b + d

  3. COption (c)

    a - b - c + d = 0

  4. DOption (d)

    a + b + c + d = 0

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

a + b + c + d = 0

Why this answer is correct

Given:

a+bb+c=c+dd+a\rm \frac{a+b}{b+c}=\frac{c+d}{d+a} a ≠ c

Concept used:

Componendo and Dividendo:

If a : b = c : d then

(a + b ) : (a – b) = (c + d) : (c – d)

**Calculation:**

a+bb+c=c+dd+a\rm \frac{a+b}{b+c}=\frac{c+d}{d+a}

According to the above concept

⇒ a+b+b+ca+b−b−c=c+d+d+ac+d−d−a\rm \frac{a+b + b + c}{a + b - b-c}=\frac{c+d+ d + a}{c +d-d-a}

⇒ a+2b+ca−c=c+2d+ac−a\rm \frac{a+2b + c}{a -c}=\frac{c+2d + a}{c -a}

⇒ a+2b+ca−c=c+2d+a−(a−c)\rm \frac{a+2b + c}{a -c}=\frac{c+2d + a}{-{(a-c)}}

⇒ a + 2b + c = -c - 2d - a

⇒ 2a + 2b + 2c + 2d = 0

⇒ a + b + c + d = 0

∴ The required value is a + b + c + d = 0

Question 3

If (a3 + b3) is proportional to (a2 – b2), then (a2 - ab + b2) is proportional to

  1. AOption (a)

    (a - b)

  2. BOption (b)

    (a + b)

  3. COption (c)

    (a + ab + b)

  4. DOption (d)

    (a3 – b3)

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

(a - b)

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Given that (a3 + b3) ∝ (a2 − b2).

Expand both terms using algebraic identities: (a + b)(a2 − ab + b2) ∝ (a + b)(a − b).

Cancel the common factor (a + b) from both sides of the proportionality relation.

We get (a2 − ab + b2) ∝ (a − b).

∴ The correct answer is (a − b).

Alternate Method

Given: (a3 + b3) is directly proportional to (a2 − b2).

Formula Used: If x ∝ y, then x = k × y, where k is a constant of proportionality.

Calculations:

⇒ (a3 + b3) = k × (a2 − b2)

⇒ (a + b)(a2 − ab + b2) = k × (a + b)(a − b)

⇒ Divide both sides by the common factor (a + b):

⇒ (a2 − ab + b2) = k × (a − b)

⇒ Since k is a constant, we can write this in variation form:

⇒ (a2 − ab + b2) ∝ (a − b)

∴ The correct answer is (a − b).

Additional Information

Sum of Cubes Identity

The expression a3 + b3 is factored as (a + b)(a2 − ab + b2).

Difference of Squares Identity

The expression a2 − b2 is factored as (a − b)(a + b).

Direct Proportionality

If two quantities x and y are related such that x = ky, they are said to be directly proportional, written as x ∝ y.

Difference of Cubes Identity

The expression a3 − b3 is factored as (a − b)(a2 + ab + b2).

Question 4

If x+20+x−1x+20−x−1=73\rm\frac{\sqrt{x+20}+\sqrt{x-1}}{\sqrt{x+20}-\sqrt{x-1}}=\frac{7}{3}, then what is the value of (x+20)(x−1)\rm \sqrt{(x + 20)(x-1)} ?

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

10

Why this answer is correct

Given:

√x+20+√x−1√x+20−√x−1=73\rm\frac{√{x+20}+√{x-1}}{√{x+20}-√{x-1}}=\frac{7}{3}

Shortcut TrickAt x = 5,

√5+20+√5−1√5+20−√5−1=5+25−2=73\rm\frac{√{5+20}+√{5-1}}{√{5+20}-√{5-1}}=\frac{5+2}{5-2}=\frac{7}{3}

Hence, the required value

⇒√(x+20)(x−1)=√(25×4)⇒ \rm √{(x + 20)(x-1)} = √{(25\times4)}

⇒ √100 =  10

Alternate Method

Concept used:

Componendo and Dividendo (reverse):

If (a + b ) : (a – b) = (c + d) : (c – d) then

a : b = c : d

Calculation:

√x+20+√x−1√x+20−√x−1=73\rm\frac{√{x+20}+√{x-1}}{√{x+20}-√{x-1}}=\frac{7}{3}

⇒ √x+20√x−1=7+37−3=104\rm\frac{√{x+20}}{√{x-1}}=\frac{7+3}{7-3}= \frac{10}{4}

⇒ √x+20√x−1=52\rm\frac{√{x+20}}{√{x-1}}=\frac{5}{2}

Squaring both sides, we get

⇒ x+20x−1=254\rm\frac{{x+20}}{{x-1}}=\frac{25}{4}

⇒ 4x + 80 = 25x – 25

⇒ (25x – 4x) = (80 + 25)

⇒ 21x = 105

⇒ x = 5

The value of √(x+20)(x−1)\rm √{(x + 20)(x-1)}

⇒ √(5+20)(5−1)\rm √{(5 + 20)(5-1)}

⇒ √(25×4)\rm √{(25\times 4)} = √100

⇒ √(x+20)(x−1)\rm √{(x + 20)(x-1)} = 10

∴ The required value is 10.

Question 5

What is the HCF of (x8 – y8) and (x7 – y7 + x5y2 – x2y5) ?

  1. AOption (a)

    (x2 + y2)

  2. BOption (b)

    (x2 - y2)

  3. COption (c)

    (x3 - y3 - x2y + xy2)

  4. DOption (d)

    (x3 - y3 + x2y – xy2)

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

(x3 - y3 - x2y + xy2)

Why this answer is correct

Given:

The HCF of (x8 – y8) and (x7 – y7 + x5y2 – x2y5)

Concept:

  1. HCF of two numbers:  Product of the smallest power of each common prime factor in the numbers.

2. (an - bn) = (a - b) (an-1 + ban-2 +  ....+ bn-1)

Where n is a natural number. Hence,

For every value of n, (a - b) will be a factor of (an - bn)

3. (a + b)(a  - b) = a2 - b2

Calculation:

Using the  above formula

(x8 – y8) = (x4 - y4)(x4 + y4)

⇒ (x8 – y8) = (x2 - y2)(x2 + y2) (x4 + y4)

⇒ (x8 – y8) = (x + y)(x – y)(x2 + y2)(x4 + y4)

Now, (x7 – y7 + x5y2 – x2y5)

⇒ x7 + x5y2 – y7 – x2y5

⇒ x5(x2 + y2) – y5(y2 + x2)

⇒ (x2 + y2) (x5 – y5)

Using the general formula of (an - bn)

⇒ (x2 + y2)(x - y)(x4 + yx3 + y2x2 + y3x + y4)

Now, using the concept of HCF

The required HCF = (x – y)(x2 + y2)

Multiplying the factor

⇒ (x3 – y3 – x2y + xy2)

∴The required HCF is (x3 - y3 - x2y + xy2)

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

48

Why this answer is correct

Given:

The sum of the squares of the roots of the equation x2 - 14x + k = 0 = 100

Formula used:

For a quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0

Sum of roots = −ba\frac{-b}{{a}}

Product of roots = ca\frac{c}{{a}}

Calculation:

x2 - 14x + k = 0

α + β = −ba\frac{-b}{{a}} = 14

αβ = ca\frac{c}{{a}} = k

Now, the sum of the squares of the roots

⇒ α2 + β2 = (α + β)2 - 2αβ

⇒ α2 + β2 = (14)2 - 2k = 100      (Given)

⇒ 196 - 2k = 100

⇒ 2k = 96

⇒ k = 48

∴ The required value of k is 48.

Question 7

If (x + k) is the HCF of x2 + px + q and x2 + qx + p, where p ≠ q, then what is the value of k ?

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

-1

Why this answer is correct

Given:

(x + k) is the HCF of x2 + px + q and x2 + qx + p

Concept:

  1. HCF: Product of the smallest power of each common prime factor in the numbers.

2. If (x - a) is factor of p(x) then p(a) = 0

Calculation:

We have,

P(x) = x2 + px + q

Q(x) = x2 + qx + p

Since, (x + k) is HCF (common prime factor) of P(x) & Q(x)

⇒ P(k) =  k2 - kp + q = 0

⇒ k2 = kp - q          ------(1)

Again,

Q(k) = x2 + qx + p

⇒ k2 = kq - p           ------(2)

From equation (1) & (2)

⇒ kp - q = kq - p

⇒ k(p - q) = (q - p)

⇒ k = -1

∴ The required value of k is -1.

Additional Information

LCM: Product of the greatest power of each prime factor, involved in the numbers.

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

9

Why this answer is correct

Formula used:

Dividend = Divisor ×  quotient + Remainder

Calculation:

Let the greater number be G & smaller number be S.

⇒ 3G = S × 6 + 6

⇒ 3G = 6S + 6

⇒ G = 2S + 2           -----(1)

Also,

⇒ 5S = G × 2 + 3

⇒ 5S = 2G + 3

⇒ 5S = 2(2S + 2) + 3        [From equation (1)]

⇒ 5S = 4S + 7

⇒ S = 7

Put this value in equation (1)

⇒ G = 2 × 7 + 2 = 16

∴ Difference = 16 - 7 = 9

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

Only 1

Why this answer is correct

Concept:

Factor: A number that divides another number.

For example, 3 and 6 are factors of 12

Shortcut TrickWe have  a2 (b - c)3 + b2 (c - a)3 + c2 (a - b)3

Let, a = 1, b = 2, c = 3

⇒ 12 (2 - 3)3 + 22(3 - 1)3 + 32(1 - 2)3

⇒ (-1) + 32 - 9 = 22

Statement:1

(ab + bc + ca) = 1 × 2 + 2 × 3 + 3 × 1

⇒ (ab + bc + ca) = 11

Which is a factor of 22

Statement:2

(a + b + c) = 1 + 2 + 3 = 6

Which is not a factor of 22

∴ Only statement 1 is correct.

Answer: (c)C.

1xyz\rm\frac{1}{xyz}

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

We have,

1x(x−y)(x−z)+1y(y−z)(y−x)+1z(z−x)(z−y)\rm \frac{1}{x(x-y)(x-z)}+\frac{1}{y(y-z)(y-x)}+\frac{1}{z(z-x)(z-y)}

Put x = 1, y = 2, z = 3

⇒ 11(1−2)(1−3)+12(2−3)(2−1)+13(3−1)(3−2)\rm \frac{1}{1(1-2)(1-3)}+\frac{1}{2(2-3)(2-1)}+\frac{1}{3(3-1)(3-2)}

⇒ 1(−1)(−2)+12(−1)+13(2)\frac{1}{(-1)(-2)}+\frac{1}{2(-1)}+\frac{1}{3(2)}

⇒ 12−12+16=16\frac{1}{2}-\frac{1}{2}+\frac{1}{6} = \frac{1}{6}

From option (3),

1xyz=11×2×3=16\frac{1}{xyz} = \frac{1}{1\times 2\times 3} = \frac{1}{6}

∴ 1xyz\rm\frac{1}{xyz} is the correct value.

Question 11

Consider the following statements :

  1. x4(y – z) + y4(z - x) + z4(x - y) is positive if x > y > z. 2. x4(y - z) + y4(z - x) + z4(x - y) is negative if x < y < z.

  4. DOption (d)

    Neither 1 nor 2

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

Both 1 and 2

Why this answer is correct

Calculation:

Statement 1.

x4(y – z) + y4(z - x) + z4(x - y) is positive if x > y > z.

We have to solve this by Value putting method

Here, x > y > z.

Then, x = 2, y = 1 or z = 0

Now,

⇒ 24(1 − 0) + 14(0 − 2) + 04(2 − 1)

⇒ 16 + 1(-2) + 0

⇒ 16 − 2 = 14

So, Statement 1 is positive.

Statement 2.

x4(y - z) + y4(z - x) + z4(x - y) is negative if x < y < z.

Here, x < y < z

Then, x = 0, y = 1 or z = 2

Now,

⇒ 04(1 − 2) + 14(2 − 0) + 24(0 − 1)

⇒ 0 + 2 − 16 = -14

So, Statement 2 is negative.

∴ Both 1 and 2.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

9

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Total work = LCM of 45 and 40 = 360 units.

Efficiency of X = 360 ÷ 45 = 8 units/day | Efficiency of Y = 360 ÷ 40 = 9 units/day.

Work done by Y alone in the last 23 days = 23 × 9 = 207 units.

Remaining work done by X and Y together = 360 − 207 = 153 units.

Combined efficiency = 8 + 9 = 17 units/day ⇒ n = 153 ÷ 17 = 9.

∴ The correct answer is n = 9.

Alternate Method

Given:

Time taken by X to complete the work = 45 days.

Time taken by Y to complete the work = 40 days.

X and Y work together for n days, and Y completes the remaining work in 23 days.

Formula Used:

Total Work = LCM of given days.

Efficiency = Total Work ÷ Number of Days.

PersonDaysTotal WorkEfficiency
X453608
Y409

Calculations:

⇒ Combined efficiency of X and Y = 8 + 9 = 17 units/day.

⇒ Work completed by Y alone in 23 days = 23 × 9 = 207 units.

⇒ Remaining work done by X and Y together = Total Work − Work done by Y alone.

⇒ Remaining work = 360 − 207 = 153 units.

⇒ Time taken by X and Y to complete 153 units (n) = 153 ÷ 17 = 9 days.

⇒ Hence, n = 9.

∴ The correct answer is n = 9.

Additional Information

LCM Method in Time and Work

Total work is considered to be the Lowest Common Multiple (LCM) of the distinct days taken by the individuals to complete the job. Efficiency of a person is given by: Total Work ÷ Time Taken.

Work and Wages

Wages are strictly distributed in the ratio of the total work done by each individual. If they work for the same number of days, the wages are distributed in the ratio of their efficiencies.

Pipes and Cisterns

The concept remains similar to time and work, with the only variation being that an inlet pipe does positive work (filling) while an outlet or leakage pipe does negative work (emptying).

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

420

Why this answer is correct

Given:

480 persons working 10 hours per day complete one-fourth of a work in 10 days.

Formula used:

M1 × D1 × H1/W1 = M2 × D2 × H2/W2

Where, M = Number of men,

D = Number of days, H = Number of hours,

W = Work done

Calculation:

Let, y additional workers are required;

M1 = 480, D1 = 10, H1 = 10, W1 = 14\frac{1}{{4}}

M2 = (480 + y), D2 = 20, H2 = 8, W2 =  (1 − 14\frac{1}{{4}}) = 34\frac{3}{{4}}

Using the above formula

⇒ 480×10×1014=(480+y)×20×834\frac{480\times 10\times10}{\frac{1}{4}} = \frac{(480+y)\times 20\times 8 }{\frac{3}{4}}

⇒ 480×10×101=160(480+y)3\frac{480\times 10\times10}{1} = \frac{160(480+y) }{3}

⇒ 480 + y = 900

⇒ y = (900 − 480) = 420

∴ The required number of persons is 420.

Question 15

12 women and 16 men can do a piece of work in 5 days. 13 women and 24 men can do it in 4 days. How long will 25 women and 50 men take to do it?

  1. AOption (a)

    1 days

  2. BOption (b)

    2 days

  3. COption (c)

    3 days

  4. DOption (d)

    4 days

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

2 days

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Equate total work: 5 × (12W + 16M) = 4 × (13W + 24M)

⇒ 60W + 80M = 52W + 96M ⇒ 8W = 16M ⇒ 1W = 2M

Convert Group 1 to men only: 12(2M) + 16M = 40M, taking 5 days.

Target group in men only: 25(2M) + 50M = 100M.

Using M1D1 = M2D2 ⇒ 40 × 5 = 100 × D ⇒ D = 2 days.

∴ The correct answer is 2 days.

Alternate Method

Given:

Group 1: 12 Women (W) and 16 Men (M) can do the work in 5 days.

Group 2: 13 Women (W) and 24 Men (M) can do the work in 4 days.

Method Used:

We use the LCM method to determine the efficiency of each group and then solve for the individual efficiencies of men and women.

PersonsDaysTotal WorkEfficiency
12W + 16M52020 ÷ 5 = 4
13W + 24M420 ÷ 4 = 5

Calculations:

⇒ 12W + 16M = 4    (Equation 1)

⇒ 13W + 24M = 5    (Equation 2)

⇒ Multiply Equation 1 by 3 and Equation 2 by 2 to balance M:

⇒ 36W + 48M = 12

⇒ 26W + 48M = 10

⇒ Subtracting the two equations: 10W = 2 ⇒ W = 0.2 units/day

⇒ Substituting W = 0.2 into Equation 1: 12(0.2) + 16M = 4

⇒ 2.4 + 16M = 4 ⇒ 16M = 1.6 ⇒ M = 0.1 units/day

⇒ Efficiency of target group (25W + 50M) = 25(0.2) + 50(0.1) = 5 + 5 = 10 units/day

⇒ Time required = Total Work ÷ Efficiency = 20 ÷ 10 = 2 days

∴ The correct answer is 2 days.

Additional Information

Total Work Concept

Total work is the product of efficiency and the time taken to complete it. For equivalent groups completing the same task, the work relation is W = M1 × D1 = M2 × D2.

Combined Efficiency

When individuals with different capabilities work together, their one-day work (efficiency) is added directly. The combined efficiency of a mixed group is (Number of men × Men's efficiency) + (Number of women × Women's efficiency).

Pipes & Cisterns Analogy

The efficiency concept is closely mirrored in Pipes & Cisterns problems, where the work done corresponds to the volume filled, and efficiency equates to the filling rate of different pipes.

Question 16

There are two stations X and Y, 1320 km apart. A train starts from station X at 6 a.m. and moves at an average speed of 60 km/hr. At 2 p.m. another train starts from Y towards X and moves at an average speed of 80 km/hr. When do they meet ?

  1. AOption (a)

    6 p.m.

  2. BOption (b)

    7 p.m.

  3. COption (c)

    8 p.m.

  4. DOption (d)

    9 p.m.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

8 p.m.

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Average speed of first train = 60 km/hr

Average speed of second train = 80 km/hr

Formula used:

Distance = speed × time

Average speed = Total Distance between two trains/ Total Time

Calculation:

According to the question;

The first train starts from station X at 6 a.m.

6 a.m. to 8 p.m. = 8 hours

Distance travelled by X in 8 hour

⇒ (60 × 8) = 480 km

Remaining distance = (1320 - 480) = 840 km

Now, X & Y travel toward each other

⇒ Relative Speed = 60 + 80 = 140 km/hr

The time is the same at station X and station Y i.e. 2 p.m.

Time when both trains will meet

⇒ t = (840140)(\frac{840}{{140}}) = 6 hours

∴ They meet at (2 p.m. + 6 p.m.) = 8 p.m.

Alternate Method Given:

Distance between X and Y = 1320 km

Train from X starts at 6 a.m., Speed = 60 km/hr

Train from Y starts at 2 p.m., Speed = 80 km/hr

Formula Used:

Distance = Speed × Time

Calculation:

The train from X travels for 8 hours before the train from Y starts (from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.):

⇒ Distance covered by train from X = 60 km/hr × 8 hours = 480 km

Remaining distance between the two trains when the train from Y starts:

⇒ Remaining distance = 1320 km - 480 km = 840 km

Relative speed of both trains (since they are moving towards each other):

⇒ Relative speed = 60 km/hr + 80 km/hr = 140 km/hr

Time taken to meet (using the remaining distance and relative speed):

⇒ Time to meet = 840 km / 140 km/hr = 6 hours

The train from Y starts at 2 p.m.:

⇒ Meeting time = 2 p.m. + 6 hours = 8 p.m.

∴ The trains meet at 8 p.m.

<br>

Alternate Method

According to the question

Alcohol contained in first glass = 3/5

Water contained in first glass = 2/5

Alcohol contained in second glass = 4/5

Water contained in second glass = 1/5

Now, the ratio of alcohol and water in the third glass

⇒ (3/5 + 4/5) : (2/5 + 1/5)

⇒ (7/5 : 3/5)

⇒ 7 : 3

∴ The required ratio is 7 : 3

Question 18

If x is the HCF and y is the LCM of 35,625,920,2750,\frac{3}{5}, \frac{6}{25}, \frac{9}{20}, \frac{27}{50}, then which one of the  following is correct?

  1. AOption (a)

    y = 90x

  2. BOption (b)

    y = 180x

  3. COption (c)

    y = 270x

  4. DOption (d)

    y = 360x

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

y = 360x

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

For fractions, HCF = HCF of numerators ÷ LCM of denominators.

For fractions, LCM = LCM of numerators ÷ HCF of denominators.

Numerators: 3, 6, 9, 27 | Denominators: 5, 25, 20, 50.

x = HCF = 3 ÷ 100 | y = LCM = 54 ÷ 5.

Ratio y/x = (54/5) ÷ (3/100) = (54/5) × (100/3) = 18 × 20 = 360.

∴ The correct answer is y = 360x.

Alternate Method

Given: Fractions are 3/5, 6/25, 9/20, and 27/50.

Formula Used:

⇒ HCF of Fractions = HCF(Numerators) / LCM(Denominators)

⇒ LCM of Fractions = LCM(Numerators) / HCF(Denominators)

Calculations:

⇒ x = HCF(3, 6, 9, 27) / LCM(5, 25, 20, 50) = 3 / 100

⇒ y = LCM(3, 6, 9, 27) / HCF(5, 25, 20, 50) = 54 / 5

⇒ To find the relation, divide y by x:

⇒ y/x = (54/5) / (3/100)

⇒ y/x = (54/5) × (100/3)

⇒ y/x = 18 × 20 = 360

⇒ y = 360x

∴ The correct answer is y = 360x.

HCF and LCM of Fractions

Always ensure fractions are in their simplest form before applying the HCF/LCM formulas to avoid errors.

Product Rule

For any two numbers a and b, HCF(a, b) × LCM(a, b) = a × b. Note: This rule does not directly apply to a set of more than two fractions in the same way.

LCM of Denominators

To find the LCM of 5, 25, 20, 50: 50 is the largest, its multiples are 50, 100... 100 is divisible by 5, 25, 20, and 50.

  4. DOption (d)

    Remainder cannot be determined

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

5

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick By Remainder Theorem, we can directly substitute the remainders in place of the variables. Remainder of x = 2 and Remainder of y = 3 Remainder of (x − y) ÷ 6 = (2 − 3) = −1 Since the remainder cannot be negative, add the divisor (6) to the negative remainder. Actual Remainder = −1 + 6 = 5 ∴ The correct answer is 5.

Alternate Method Given: When x is divided by 6, the remainder is 2. When y is divided by 6, the remainder is 3. x > y Formula Used: Dividend = (Divisor × Quotient) + Remainder Calculation: ⇒ Let the quotient when x is divided by 6 be a. Then, x = 6a + 2 ⇒ Let the quotient when y is divided by 6 be b. Then, y = 6b + 3 ⇒ (x − y) = (6a + 2) − (6b + 3) ⇒ (x − y) = 6(a − b) + 2 − 3 ⇒ (x − y) = 6(a − b) − 1 ⇒ To find the positive remainder when divided by 6, we rewrite the expression by adding and subtracting 6: ⇒ (x − y) = 6(a − b) − 6 + 6 − 1 ⇒ (x − y) = 6(a − b − 1) + 5 ⇒ Since x > y and x leaves remainder 2 while y leaves remainder 3, we know a > b, making (a − b − 1) a non-negative integer. ⇒ Here, 6(a − b − 1) is completely divisible by 6, so the remainder left is 5. ∴ The correct answer is 5.

Additional Information Negative Remainders Concept When a calculation yields a negative remainder −R with a divisor D, the true positive mathematical remainder is given by (D − R). Remainder Addition & Subtraction Rule The remainder of an expression (A ± B) ÷ D is equivalent to [Remainder(A ÷ D) ± Remainder(B ÷ D)] evaluated again with modulo D. Remainder Multiplication Rule The remainder of (A × B) ÷ D is identical to the remainder obtained from [Remainder(A ÷ D) × Remainder(B ÷ D)] ÷ D.

Why this answer is correct

Concept:

Total number of factors of xpyq is (p + 1)(q + 1)

Number of odd factors of xpyqzr if x is even and y and z are odd then the factors are

1× (q + 1)(r + 1)

Calculation:

We have,

⇒ N = 126 × 38 × 53

⇒ N = 26 × 26 × 36 × 38 × 53

⇒ N = 212 × 314 × 53

Total number of factors:- (12 + 1) × (14 + 1) × (3 + 1)

Total number of factors:- 13 × 15 × 4

Total number of factors = 780

Statement I: The number of odd factors of N is 60.

Number of odd factors = 1 × (14 + 1) × (3 +1)

Number of odd factors = 1 × 15 × 4

A number of odd factors = 60.

Hence, Statement I is correct.

Statement II: The number of even factors of N is 720.

Number of even factors = Total number of factors - Odd factors

Number of even factors = 780 - 60

Number of even factors = 720

Hence, Statement II is correct.

∴ Both statements are correct.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

Only two values

Why this answer is correct

Formula used:

1. For quadratic equation ax2 + bx + c = 0

x=−b±(b2−4ac)2ax = {-b \pm \sqrt{(b^2-4ac)} \over 2a}

2. (a + b)(a - b) = a2 - b2

3. (a + b)2 = a2 + b2 + 2ab

Calculation:

qx2 – 2px + q = 0

By above formula,

x=−b±(b2−4ac)2ax = {-b \pm \sqrt{(b^2-4ac)} \over 2a}

Here, a = q, b = -2p and c = q

x=2p±(4p2−4q2)2qx = {2p \pm \sqrt{(4p^2-4q^2)} \over 2q}

⇒ x=p±p2−q2qx = {p \pm \sqrt{p^2-q^2} \over q}     ----(1)

Statement:1

x = p+q+p−qp+q−p−q\rm \frac {\sqrt{p + q}+\sqrt{p-q}}{\sqrt{p+q}-\sqrt{p-q}}, where p > q

Rationalizing the denominator

⇒ p+q+p−qp+q−p−q\rm \frac {\sqrt{p + q}+\sqrt{p-q}}{\sqrt{p+q}-\sqrt{p-q}} × p+q+p−qp+q+p−q\rm \frac {\sqrt{p + q}+\sqrt{p-q}}{\sqrt{p+q}+\sqrt{p-q}}

Using the identities (2) & (3)

⇒ x=p+q+p−q+2(p+q)(p−q)p+q+p−qx = \frac{p+q+p-q+2\sqrt{(p+q)(p-q)}}{p+q+p-q}

⇒ x=p+q+p−q+2(p2−q2)p+q+p−qx = \frac{p+q+p-q+2\sqrt{(p^2-q^2)}}{p+q+p-q}

⇒ x=p±p2−q2qx = {p \pm \sqrt{p^2-q^2} \over q}

Hence, statement 1 is correct

Statement: 2

From equation (2), we can say that,

x=p+p2−q2qx = {p + \sqrt{p^2-q^2} \over q}

Hence, statement 2 is also correct.

Statement 3:

We have, x=p±p2−q2qx = {p \pm \sqrt{p^2-q^2} \over q}

For any value of p & q,

x = p+qp−q\rm \frac {\sqrt{p + q}}{\sqrt{p-q}} is not possible

Hence, statement 3 is wrong

∴ Only two values of x are possible.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

(x2 + x + 1)(x2 - x + 1)2

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Use the standard polynomial identity: LCM × GCD = p(x) × q(x).

Given p(x) = x4 + x2 + 1 and GCD = x2 − x + 1.

Note that x4 + x2 + 1 = (x2 + x + 1)(x2 − x + 1).

LCM = [p(x) × q(x)] ÷ GCD = [(x2 + x + 1)(x2 − x + 1) × q(x)] ÷ (x2 − x + 1).

LCM = (x2 + x + 1) × q(x). Since q(x) = (x2 − x + 1)2, LCM = (x2 + x + 1)(x2 − x + 1)2.

∴ The correct answer is (x2 + x + 1)(x2 − x + 1)2.

Alternate Method

Given:

p(x) = x4 + x2 + 1

q(x) = x4 − 2x3 + 3x2 − 2x + 1

GCD = x2 − x + 1

Formula Used:

LCM(p, q) = [p(x) × q(x)] ÷ GCD(p, q)

Calculations:

⇒ Factorizing p(x): x4 + x2 + 1 = (x4 + 2x2 + 1) − x2 = (x2 + 1)2 − x2

⇒ p(x) = (x2 + 1 + x)(x2 + 1 − x) = (x2 + x + 1)(x2 − x + 1)

⇒ Factorizing q(x): x4 − 2x3 + 3x2 − 2x + 1 = (x2 − x + 1)2

⇒ Verification: (x2 − x + 1)(x2 − x + 1) = x2(x2 − x + 1) − x(x2 − x + 1) + 1(x2 − x + 1)

⇒ x4 − x3 + x2 − x3 + x2 − x + x2 − x + 1 = x4 − 2x3 + 3x2 − 2x + 1 (Correct)

⇒ LCM = [(x2 + x + 1)(x2 − x + 1) × (x2 − x + 1)2] ÷ (x2 − x + 1)

⇒ LCM = (x2 + x + 1) × (x2 − x + 1)2

∴ The correct answer is (x2 + x + 1)(x2 − x + 1)2.

Additional Information

Polynomial Product Rule

For any two polynomials p(x) and q(x), the product of the polynomials is equal to the product of their LCM and GCD.

Sophie Germain Identity

The factorization x4 + x2 + 1 = (x2 + x + 1)(x2 − x + 1) is a specific case of the Sophie Germain Identity used frequently in algebra.

GCD Definition

The Greatest Common Divisor (GCD) is the highest degree polynomial that divides both p(x) and q(x) without a remainder.

Statement-1: The sum is divisible by 9.

Statement-2: The sum is divisible by 2.

Which one of the following is correct in respect of the question and the statements ?

  1. AOption (a)

    Statement-1 alone is sufficient to answer the question

  2. BOption (b)

    Statement-2 alone is sufficient to answer the question

  3. COption (c)

    Both Statement-1 and Statement-2 are sufficient to answer the question

  4. DOption (d)

    Both Statement-1 and Statement-2 are not sufficient to answer the question

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

Both Statement-1 and Statement-2 are sufficient to answer the question

Why this answer is correct

Calculation:

According to the question

First 2 digit number = 10x + y

By reversing the 2-digit number = 10y + x

Adding the two numbers we get,

⇒ (10x + y) + (10y + x)

⇒ 11(x + y)

Statement:1 The sum is divisible by 9

Put x = 9, y = 9

⇒ 11 (9 + 9) = 198

Which is divisible by 9

Statement: 2 The sum is divisible by 2

Put x = 2, y = 2

⇒ 11 (2 + 2) = 44

Which is divisible by 2

∴ Both Statement-1 and Statement-2 are sufficient to answer

the question

Question 28

Consider the question and two statements given below :

LCM of two numbers x and y is 481 where x > y.

Question: What is the value of (3x – 2y) ?

Statement-1: y > 1.

Statement-2: HCF of x and y is 1.

Answer: (a)A.

Statement-1 alone is sufficient to answer the question

Why this answer is correct

Given:

LCM of two numbers x and y is 481 where x > y.

Concept used:

HCF: Product of the smallest power of each common prime factor in the numbers.

LCM: Product of the greatest power of each prime factor, involved in the numbers

Calculation:

The factors of 481 = (481 × 1) and (37 × 13)

According to the question x > y, then

(x, y) = (481, 1) or (37, 13)

Statement 1:  y > 1

Hence, only possible value are

x = 37, y = 13

We can easily find the value of (3x – 2y).

Statement 2. HCF of x and y is 1

In both (481, 1) or (37, 13), HCF is 1.

Two different values of (3x – 2y)

∴ Statement-1 alone is sufficient to answer the question

Question 29

Consider the question and two statements given below :

Question: Is (xn + yn) divisible by (x + y)?

Statement-1: n is a natural number.

Statement-2: n is an even natural number

Which one of the following is correct in respect of the question and the statements ?

  1. AOption (a)

    sufficient to Statement-1 alone is answer the question

Answer: (b)B.

Statement-2 alone is sufficient to answer the question

Why this answer is correct

Concept used:

Natural number: All the numbers start from 1 till infinity.

The factor of  xn + yn:

When n is odd ⇒ (x + y)

When n is even ⇒ No factor

Explanation:

Statement-1: n is a natural number

When n is odd, a factor of (xn + yn) is (x + y) but,

No factor in the case when n is even

Therefore, with this statement, we are not sure about the factor of (x + y). For the odd value of n, (x + y) will be a factor & for the even value of n, (x + y) will not be a factor.

Statement-2: n is an even natural number

We have discussed already when n is even, there is no factor.

In this case (xn + yn) will not be divisible by (x + y)

Hence, if we consider only statement 2 (i.e. n = even), we can surely say (x + y) is not divisible by (xn + yn).

∴ Statement-2 alone is sufficient to answer the question.

Important PointsThe question says, which one of the following is correct in respect of the question and the statements?

It doesn't mean that we have to determine whether statements 1 or 2 is/or correct or not.

We have to find the correct option using two statements. Clearly, with statement 2, we are sure about the answer i.e. "if n = even, (x + y) will not be a factor of (xn + yn)'. So it is sufficient to answer.

Question 30

Consider the question and two statements given below :

Let x and y be two real numbers.

Question: Is xy > 0 ?

Statement-1 : x8y9 < 0.

Statement-2: x9y10 < 0.

Given:

Let x and y be two real numbers.

Concept:

1. For positive real number:

  • Both even & odd power gives positive result.
  • Ex: (2)2 = 4, (-2)2 = 4 2. For negative real number:
  • Even power gives positive result
  • Odd power gives negative result.
  • Ex: (2)3 = 8, (-2)3 = -8

Calculation:

Statement 1:

x8y9 < 0

As x8 will be always positive

⇒ y9 < 0    (product of +ve and -ve is negative)

⇒ y < 0

Statement: 2

x9y10 < 0

As y10 will be always positive

⇒ x9 < 0    (product of +ve and -ve is negative)

⇒ x < 0

From 1 & 2, we can say x < 0 & y < 0

Since, product of -ve and -ve is positive

⇒ xy > 0

∴ Both Statement-1 and Statement-2 are sufficient to answer the question

Question 31

If a = 3b, 4b = 5c, 6c = 7d, then what is d+ad−a\rm\frac{d+a}{d-a} equal to ?

  1. AOption (a)

    2743\rm\frac{27}{43}

  2. BOption (b)

    4327\rm\frac{43}{27}

  3. COption (c)

    −2743-\rm\frac{27}{43}

  4. DOption (d)

    −4327-\rm\frac{43}{27}

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

−4327-\rm\frac{43}{27}

Why this answer is correct

Given:

a = 3b, 4b = 5c, 6c = 7d

Calculation:

a = 3b, 4b = 5c, 6c = 7d

⇒ ab\frac{a}{{b}} = 31\frac{3}{{1}}, bc\frac{b}{{c}} = 54\frac{5}{{4}}, cd\frac{c}{{d}} = 76\frac{7}{{6}}

⇒ (ab\frac{a}{{b}} × bc\frac{b}{{c}} × cd\frac{c}{{d}}) = (31\frac{3}{{1}} × 54\frac{5}{{4}} × 76\frac{7}{{6}})

⇒ ad\frac{a}{{d}} = 358\frac{35}{{8}}

Now, the value of d+ad−a\rm\frac{d+a}{d-a}

⇒ (8+358−35)(\rm\frac{8+35}{8-35}) = −4327-\rm\frac{43}{27}

∴ The required value is −4327-\rm\frac{43}{27}.

Question 32

What are the values of k for which the polynomial (k - 3) x2 - kx - 1 has no real linear factors?

  1. AOption (a)

    k < - 6

  2. BOption (b)

    -6 < k <  2

  3. COption (c)

    2 < k < 6

  4. DOption (d)

    k > 6

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

-6 < k <  2

Why this answer is correct

Given:

The given polynomial = (k - 3) x2 - kx - 1

Concept used:

If ax2 + bx + c = 0 has no real roots, then

Discriminant (D) = b2- 4ac < 0

Calculation:

Given quadratic equation is (k - 3) x2 - kx - 1

According to the above concept,

⇒ b2 - 4ac < 0

⇒ (-k)2 - 4(k - 3)(-1) < 0

⇒ k2 + 4k - 12 < 0

⇒ k2 + 6k - 2k - 12 < 0

⇒ k(k + 6) - 2(k + 6) < 0

⇒ (k - 2)(k + 6) < 0

∴ The required value is -6 < k < 2.

Question 33

If bc + cd = 2bd and a + c = 2b, then which one of the following is correct ?

  1. AOption (a)

    ab - cd = 0

  2. BOption (b)

    ac – bd = 0

  3. COption (c)

    ad − bc = 0

  4. DOption (d)

    ad + bc = 0

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

ad − bc = 0

Why this answer is correct

Given:

bc + cd = 2bd

a + c = 2b

Shortcut Trick

Put a = 1, b = 2 or c = 3

⇒ bc + cd = 2bd

⇒ (2 × 3) + 3d = 2 × 2 × d

⇒ 6 + 3d = 4d

⇒ d = 6

From option 3:

ad − bc = 1 × 6 - 2 × 3 = 0

∴ Option 3 is right.

Alternate Method

According to the question

bc + cd = 2bd     -----(1)

a + c = 2b

Putting the value of 2b in equation (1) then,

⇒ bc + cd = (a + c) × d

⇒ bc + cd = ad + cd

⇒ bc = ad

⇒ ad − bc = 0

∴ The required value is ad − bc = 0

Question 34

In a flight of 2800 km, an aircraft was slowed down due to bad weather. Its average speed for the trip was reduced by 100 km/hr and time of flight increased by 30 minutes. What was the original average speed of the aircraft?

  1. AOption (a)

    700 km/hr

  2. BOption (b)

    750 km/hr

  3. COption (c)

    800 km/hr

  4. DOption (d)

    900 km/hr

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

800 km/hr

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Distance covered by flight = 2800 km

Average speed reduced by 100 km/hr

Time of flight increased by 30 min = 1/2 hour

Formula Used:

Distance = Speed × Time

Shortcut Trick

We have,

⇒ DistanceSpeed=Time\frac{Distance}{Speed} = Time

⇒ 2800(x−100)−2800x=12\frac{2800}{(x - 100)} - \frac{2800}{x} = \frac{1}{2}

Put x = 800

⇒ 2800700−2800800=time\frac{2800}{700} - \frac{2800}{800} = time

⇒ 4−72=time4 - \frac{7}{2} = time

⇒ 0.5 = 12\frac{1}{2}  = time

∴ The original average speed of the aircraft is 800 km/hr.

Alternate MethodLet the original average speed (S1) = x

Average speed reduced by 100(S2)  = x - 100

Total speed ΔS = S2 - S1 = x - x - 100 = 100

⇒ D = S1 ×S2ΔS×Δt\frac{S_1 \ \times S_2}{\Delta S} \times \Delta t

⇒ 2800=x(x−100)100×122800 = \frac{x(x - 100)}{100} \times \frac{1}{2}

⇒ 560000 = x(x - 100)

⇒ x2 - 100x - 560000 = 0

⇒ x2 -  800x + 700x - 560000 = 0

⇒ x(x - 800) + 700(x - 800) = 0

⇒ (x - 800)(x + 700) = 0

⇒ x = 800 or x = - 700

∴ The original average speed of the aircraft is 800 km/hr.

Question 35

If x = b + c, y = c + a, z = a + b, then what is (x + y + z)3 – 24xyz equal to ?

  1. AOption (a)

    a3 + b3 + c3

  2. BOption (b)

    2 (a3 + b3 + c3)

  3. COption (c)

    8 (a3 + b3 + c3)

  4. DOption (d)

    None of the above

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

8 (a3 + b3 + c3)

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut TrickPut a = 1, b = 0, c = 0

x = b + c = 0

y = c + a  = 1

z = a + b = 1

⇒ (x + y + z)3 – 24xyz = (0 + 1 + 1)3 - 24 × 0

⇒ (x + y + z)3 – 24xyz = 8

From option (3)

8 (a3 + b3 + c3) = 8(13 + 0 + 0) = 1

∴ 8 (a3 + b3 + c3) is the correct answer.

Alternate Method

Formula Used:

(a + b + c)3 = a3 + b3 + c3 + 3(a + b)(b + c)(c + a)

Calculation:

We have,

⇒ (x + y + z)3 – 24xyz

⇒ (b + c + c + a + a + b)3 - 24(b + c)(c + a)(a + b)

⇒ [2(a + b + c)]3 - 24(b + c)(c + a)(a + b)

⇒ 8(a + b + c)3 - 24(b + c)(c + a)(a + b)

⇒ 8[a3 + b3 + c3 + 3(a + b)(b + c)(c + a)] - 24(b + c)(c + a)(a + b)

⇒ 8(a3 + b3 + c3) + 24(a + b)(b + c)(c + a) - 24(b + c)(c + a)(a + b)

⇒ 8(a3 + b3 + c3)

∴ The value of (x + y + z)3 – 24xyz is equal to 8(a3 + b3 + c3).

    (ud−vd)(u−v)\rm\frac{(ud-vd)}{(u-v)}

  4. DOption (d)

    (ud−vd)(u+v)\rm\frac{(ud-vd)}{(u+v)}

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

ud(u−v)\rm\frac{ud}{(u-v)}

Why this answer is correct

Given:

A person X and another person Y walk in the same direction

Average speed of X = u km/hr

Average speed of Y = v km/hr

Concept Used:

When two objects move in the same direction, then

Relative speed = S1 - S2

Formula used:

Speed = Distance/Time

Calculation

Time = Distance/Speed

⇒ t = d/(u − v)

Distance covered by X to overtake Y,

⇒ d = [(u × d/(u − v)]

⇒ d = ud(u−v)\rm\frac{ud}{(u-v)}

∴ The required value is  ud(u−v)\rm\frac{ud}{(u-v)}.

Question 37

If p is the difference between a number and its reciprocal and q is the difference between the square of the same number and the square of its reciprocal, then what is p4 + 4p2 equal to ?

  1. AOption (a)

    4q

  2. BOption (b)

    8q

  3. COption (c)

    4q2

  4. DOption (d)

    q2

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

q2

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut TrickLet the number be 2

Since p is the difference between a number and its reciprocal

⇒ 2 - 1/2 = 3/2 = p

⇒ p4 + 4p2 = p2(p2 + 4) = (9/4)[9/4 + 4]

⇒ p4 + 4p2 = 225/16

Since q is the difference between the square of the same number

and the square of its reciprocal

⇒ (2)2 - (1/2)2 = 15/4 = q

⇒ q2 = 225/16

∴ The required value is q2

Alternate Method

Formula used:

  1. (a2 − b2) = (a − b)(a + b)
  2. (a − b)2 = a2 + b2 − 2ab
  3. (a + b)2 = a2 + b2 + 2ab

Calculation:

Let the number be n

⇒ n − 1n\frac{1}{{n}} = p          ------(1)

⇒  n2 − 1n2\frac{1}{{n^2}} = q       -----(2)

⇒ q = (n − 1n\frac{1}{{n}}) (n + 1n\frac{1}{{n}})    [Using formula (1)]

⇒ q = p × (n + 1n\frac{1}{{n}})            [From equation (1)]

⇒ q/p = (n + 1n\frac{1}{{n}})             ------(3)

The value of  p4 + 4p2

⇒ p2(p2 + 4)

⇒ p2(n − 1n\frac{1}{{n}})2 + 4

⇒ p2(n2 + 1n2\frac{1}{{n^2}} − 2 + 4)       [Using formula (2)]

⇒ p2(n2 + 1n2\frac{1}{{n^2}}+ 2)

⇒ p2(n + 1n2\frac{1}{{n^2}})2                        [Using formula (3)]

⇒ p2 × q2p2\frac{q^2}{{p^2}} = q2                    [From equation (3)]

∴ The required value is q2

If x = 2 + 21/2, then what is the value of x4 + 16x-4 ?

  1. AOption (a)

    152

  2. BOption (b)

    144

  3. COption (c)

    136

  4. DOption (d)

    132

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

136

Why this answer is correct

Given:

x = 2 + 21/2

Formula Used:

(a - b)2 = a2 + b2 - 2ab

Calculation:

We have,

⇒ x = 2 + 21/2

⇒ x - 2 = 21/2

On squaring both the sides, we get

⇒ (x - 2)2 = (21/2)2

⇒ (x - 2)2 = 2

⇒ x2 - 4x + 4 = 2

⇒ x2 - 4x + 4 - 2 = 0

⇒ x2 - 4x + 2 = 0

⇒ x2 + 2 = 4x

On dividing by 'x', we get

⇒ x + 2x = 4x \ + \ \frac{2}{x} \ = \ 4

Again squaring on both the sides, we get

⇒ x2 + 4x2 + 4=16x^2 \ + \ \frac{4}{x^2}\ + \ 4 = 16

⇒ x2 + 4x2=12x^2 \ + \ \frac{4}{x^2} = 12

Again squaring on both the sides, we get

⇒ x4 + 16x4 + 8=144x^4 \ + \ \frac{16}{x^4} \ +\ 8 = 144

⇒ x4 + 16x4=136x^4 \ + \ \frac{16}{x^4 } = 136

∴ The value of x4 + 16x-4 is 136.

Question 39

X takes 3 hours longer than Y to walk 30 km. If X doubles his speed, he takes 2 hours less than Y. What is the speed of Y?

  1. AOption (a)

    3 km/hr

  2. BOption (b)

    4km/hr

  3. COption (c)

    4274\frac{2}{7} km/hr

  4. DOption (d)

    4374\frac{3}{7} km/hr

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

4274\frac{2}{7} km/hr

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Time is taken by X longer than Y = 3 Hours

Distance = 30 km

Time taken by X if doubles his speed = 2 hours is less than Y

**Formula used:**

Let the speed of Y be u km/h & the speed of X be v km/h

According to the question

Tx = Ty + 3

30/u = 30/v + 3         ----(1)

Now, If X doubles his speed

30/2u = 30/v - 2        -----(2)

Equation (1) - (2)

(30/u - 30/2u) = (30/v + 3) - (30/v - 2)

30/2u = 5 or u  = 3

Therefore, from equation (1)

30/3 = 30/v + 3

30/v = 7 or v = 30/7 = 4274\frac{2}{7} km/hr

∴ The required value of Y is 4274\frac{2}{7} km/hr.

Question 40

If C is the compound interest on Rs. 10,000 for one year at 4% per annum when compounded quarterly, then which one of the following is correct ?

  1. AOption (a)

    C < Rs. 100

  2. BOption (b)

    Rs. 100 < C < Rs. 200

  3. COption (c)

    Rs. 200 < C < Rs. 400

  4. DOption (d)

    C > Rs. 400

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

C > Rs. 400

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

1% S.I interest in 10000 for 1st quarter = 100 Rs

4% S.I interest in 10000 1st quarter = 400 Rs

We know that, after the first quarter, C.I > S.I

∴ C > Rs. 400

<br>

Alternate Method

Formula used:

CI = [P(1 + R/100)T − P]

Where, P = Principal, R = Rate of interest and T = Time

Calculation:

According to the question

Principal = Rs. 10,000

Rate = 4% per annum quarterly = (4/4)% = 1%

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

32\frac {3}{2}

Why this answer is correct

Given:

6x2−25x+6x2+25x+12=0\rm 6x^2 - 25x + \frac{6}{x^2} + \frac{25}{x} + 12 = 0

Formula used:

If n - 1n\frac {1}{n} = p then n2 + 1n2\frac{1}{{n^2}} = p2 + 2

Calculation:

6x2−25x+6x2+25x+12=0\rm 6x^2 - 25x + \frac{6}{x^2} + \frac{25}{x} + 12 = 0

⇒ 6(x2 + 1x2\frac{1}{{x^2}}) − 25(x − 1x\frac {1}{x}) + 12 = 0

Let, x − 1x\frac {1}{x} be 'a'

From the above concept, (x2 + 1x2\frac{1}{{x^2}}) = a2 + 2

⇒ 6(a2 + 2) − 25a + 12 = 0

⇒ 6a2 + 12 − 25a + 12 = 0

⇒ 6a2 − 25a + 24 = 0

⇒ 6a2 − 16a − 9a + 24 = 0

⇒ 2a(3a − 8) − 3(3a − 8) = 0

⇒ (2a − 3) (3a − 8) = 0

⇒ a = 32\frac {3}{2} or 83\frac {8}{3}

Since, 83\frac {8}{3} is not given

∴ The required value of x − 1x\frac {1}{x} = 32\frac {3}{2}.

Answer: (d)D.

829\frac {82}{9}

Why this answer is correct

Given:

6x2−25x+6x2+25x+12=0\rm 6x^2 - 25x + \frac{6}{x^2} + \frac{25}{x} + 12 = 0

Formula used:

⇒ a = 32\frac {3}{2} or 83\frac {8}{3}

Case:1 a = 32\frac {3}{2}

⇒ (x2 + 1x2\frac {1}{x^2}) = (a2 + 2) = (3/2)2 + 2

⇒ (x2 + 1x2\frac {1}{x^2}) = (9/4 + 2) = 17/4 (not in the option)

Case:2  a = 83\frac {8}{3}

⇒ (x2 + 1x2\frac {1}{x^2}) = (8/3)2 + 2

⇒ (x2 + 1x2\frac {1}{x^2})  = (64/9 + 2) = 82/9

∴ The require value of x2 + 1x2\frac {1}{x^2} is 829\frac {82}{9}.

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

1

Why this answer is correct

Concept:

Pythagoras theorem: In a right-angled theorem,

Hypotenuse2 = Base2 + Perpendicular2

Where R is the Radius of a circle of centre O

  • cos (90° - θ) = sin θ
  • sin2θ + cos2θ = 1
  • cos 90° = 0

Calculation:

We have, AB = 15 cm, BC = 9 cm, AC = 12 cm

122 + 92 = 144 + 81 = 225 = 152

Hence, Δ ABC is a right-angled triangle in which ∠C = 90°

As we know, ∠A + ∠B + ∠C = 180°

⇒ ∠A + ∠B = 90°         (∵ ∠C = 90°)

⇒ ∠A = 90° - ∠B

Now, the required value

cos2 A + cos2 B + cos2 C

⇒ cos2 A + cos2 (90° - A) + cos2 90°

⇒ cos2 A + sin2 A + 0           [∵ cos 90° = 0]

⇒ 1 + 0                                [∵ sin2θ + cos2θ = 1]

∴  cos2 A + cos2 B + cos2 C = 1

Answer: (a)A.

2

Why this answer is correct

Concept:

Pythagoras theorem: In a right-angled theorem,

Hypotenuse2 = Base2 + Perpendicular2

Now, the required value

sin2 A + sin2 B + sin2 C

⇒ sin2 A + sin2 (90° - A) + sin2 90°

⇒ sin2 A + cos2 A + 1           [∵ sin 90° = 1]

⇒ 1 + 1 = 2                          [∵ sin2θ + cos2θ = 1]

∴  sin2 A + sin2 B + sin2 C = 2

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

7.5 cm

Why this answer is correct

Concept:

Pythagoras theorem: In a right-angled theorem,

Hypotenuse2 = Base2 + Perpendicular2

Where R is the Radius of a circle of centre O

Calculation:

We have, AB = 12 cm, BC = 9 cm, AC = 15 cm

122 + 92 = 144 + 81 = 225 = 152

Hence, Δ ABC is a right-angled triangle in which ∠C = 90°

Using the above concept, the radius of the circle

OA = OB = OC = 15/2 = 7.5 cm

∴ The radius of the circle is 7.5 cm

Answer: (b)B.

cot 12°

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Number of sides in regular polygon = 15

Length of sides = 1 unit

Concept used:

The angle at the centre of the polygon = 360∘n\frac{360^\circ}{n}

Where n is the number of sides

tanθ = Perpendicularbase\frac{Perpendicular}{{base}}

Calculation:

We know that,

The angle at the centre of a polygon of n sides = 360∘n\frac{360^\circ}{n}

The angle at the centre of the polygon of 15 sides = 360∘15=24∘\frac{360^\circ}{15} = 24^\circ

As OC is the radius & AB is the tangent, hence

∠ OCA = ∠ OCB = 90°

Therefore, ΔOAC is the right-angled triangle

tan 12° = ACOC=12(OC)\frac{AC}{OC}=\frac{1}{{2(OC)}}

⇒ 2 OC = 1tan12°\frac{1}{{tan12° }} = cot 12°

⇒ Diameter = cot 12°     [∵ diameter = 2 radius]

∴ The diameter of a circle is cot 12°

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

125\rm \frac{12}{5}

Why this answer is correct

Given:

sin⁡θ+cos⁡θsin⁡θ−cos⁡θ\frac{\sin θ + \cosθ }{\sin θ -\cos θ} = 5

Calculation:

sin⁡θ+cos⁡θsin⁡θ−cos⁡θ\frac{\sin θ + \cosθ }{\sin θ -\cos θ} = 5

⇒ sinθ + cosθ = 5sinθ − 5cosθ

⇒ 6cosθ = 4sinθ

⇒ cosθsinθ\frac{cosθ }{{sinθ }} = 23\frac{2 }{{3 }}

⇒ cos θ = 2k, sin θ = 3k

Now, the required value

⇒ 2sin⁡θ+3cos⁡θ3sin⁡θ−2cos⁡θ\frac{2\sin θ + 3\cosθ }{3\sin θ -2\cos θ} = (2×3k+3×2k)(3×3k−2×2k)\frac{(2 \times 3k + 3 \times 2k)}{{(3 \times 3k - 2 \times 2k)}}

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

-1

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Since the given trigonometric expression does not have variables in the options, its value is independent of θ.

Let us assume any convenient angle, say θ = 0°.

We know that sin 0° = 0 and cos 0° = 1.

Substitute θ = 0° in the given expression: 2(0 + 1) − 3(0 + 1)

⇒ 2(1) − 3(1) = 2 − 3 = −1

∴ The correct answer is -1.

Alternate Method

Given:

Expression: 2 sin6θ + 2 cos6θ − 3 sin4θ − 3 cos4θ

Formula Used:

a3 + b3 = (a + b)(a2 + b2 − ab)

a2 + b2 = (a + b)2 − 2ab

sin2θ + cos2θ = 1

Calculation:

⇒ 2(sin6θ + cos6θ) − 3(sin4θ + cos4θ)

⇒ 2[(sin2θ)3 + (cos2θ)3] − 3[(sin2θ)2 + (cos2θ)2]

⇒ 2[(sin2θ + cos2θ)(sin4θ + cos4θ − sin2θ cos2θ)] − 3[(sin2θ + cos2θ)2 − 2 sin2θ cos2θ]

Substituting sin2θ + cos2θ = 1:

⇒ 2[1 × (sin4θ + cos4θ − sin2θ cos2θ)] − 3[12 − 2 sin2θ cos2θ]

⇒ 2[(sin2θ + cos2θ)2 − 2 sin2θ cos2θ − sin2θ cos2θ] − 3[1 − 2 sin2θ cos2θ]

⇒ 2[1 − 3 sin2θ cos2θ] − 3[1 − 2 sin2θ cos2θ]

⇒ 2 − 6 sin2θ cos2θ − 3 + 6 sin2θ cos2θ

⇒ 2 − 3 = −1

∴ The correct answer is -1.

Additional Information

Standard Trigonometric Identities

sin2θ + cos2θ = 1  |  1 + tan2θ = sec2θ  |  1 + cot2θ = cosec2θ

Derived Trigonometric Results

sin4θ + cos4θ = 1 − 2 sin2θ cos2θ

sin6θ + cos6θ = 1 − 3 sin2θ cos2θ

Value Substitution Method

When a trigonometric expression evaluates to a constant in the options, substituting standard angles like 0°, 30°, 45°, 60°, or 90° helps bypass complex algebraic steps.

Answer: (d)D.

5041

Why this answer is correct

Given:

3600 sec2θ + 121 cosec2θ

Concept:

a sec2θ + b cosec2θ

Then the maximum value is ∞

and minimum value is (a + b)2(\sqrt a \ + \ \sqrt b)^2

Calculation:

We have,

⇒ 3600 sec2θ + 121 cosec2θ

Formula used:

  • (a - b)2  = a2 + b2 - 2ab
  • (a + b)(a - b) = a2 - b2
  • sin θ/cos θ =  tanθ
  • 1/cos θ = sec θ

  4. DOption (d)

    xy + xz – 4yz = 0

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

xy + xz – 2yz = 0

Why this answer is correct

Given:

x is the harmonic mean between y and z.

Concept:

Harmonic mean (HM):  If a, b & c are in AP then,

1/a, 1/b, 1/c are in harmonic progression (HP).

If H is the harmonic mean of a & b, then

H = 21a + 1b\frac{2}{\frac{1}{a} \ + \ \frac{1}{b} } or H = 2aba + b\frac{2ab}{a\ + \ b}

Calculation:

We have,

x is the harmonic mean of y and z

⇒ x = 2yzy + z\frac{2yz}{y \ + \ z}

⇒ xy + xz = 2yz

⇒ xy + xz - 2yz = 0

∴ If x is the harmonic mean between y and z, then xy + xz - 2yz = 0.

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

49.5

Why this answer is correct

Given:

The sum of deviations of a set of n values measured from 50 = -10

The sum of deviations of the values measured from 46 = 70

Formula used:

Sum of deviation:

(x1 - d) + (x2 - d) + .......+ (xn - d) = ∑i=1n\displaystyle\sum_{i = 1}^{n}xi

Mean = 1n\frac{1}{{n}}(\displaystyle\sum_{i = 1}^{n}\) xi

Calculation:

We have,

⇒ ∑i=1n\displaystyle\sum_{i = 1}^{n} xi − 50n = -10          -----(1)

⇒ ∑i=1n\displaystyle\sum_{i = 1}^{n} xi − 46n = 70           ------(2)

Subtracting equation (2) from (1), we get

⇒ -4n = -80

⇒ n = 20

Now, from equation (1)

⇒ ∑i=1n\displaystyle\sum_{i = 1}^{n} xi − 50 × 20 = -10

⇒ ∑i=1n\displaystyle\sum_{i = 1}^{n} xi = 990

Now, the value of  mean

⇒ 1n\frac{1}{{n}}(\displaystyle\sum_{i = 1}^{n}\) xi = 99020\frac{990}{{20}}

⇒ Mean = 49.5

∴ The require mean is 49.5

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

40

Why this answer is correct

Given:

The average marks of the students of all four schools = 58

Formula used:

Average = Sum of observations/Number of observations

Calculation:

According to the question

⇒ (60 × 60 + 50 × 80 + 50 × 40 + x × 50)/(60 + 50 + 50 + x) = 58

⇒ (3600 + 4000 + 2000 + 50x)/(160 + x) = 58

⇒ (9600 + 50x)/160 + x) = 58

⇒ 9600 + 50x = 9280 + 58x

⇒ (58x − 50x) = (9600 − 9280)

⇒ 8x = 320

⇒ x = 40

Given:

The data of different natural numbers 4, 7, 10, 14, 2x + 3, 2x + 5, 22, 23, 30, 50 are in ascending order.

Concept used:

Natural number: Positive integers from 1 and end at infinity

When n is even,

Median = (n + 1)/2 term

When n is even,

Median = [(n/2) + (n/2 + 1)]/2 term

Shortcut TrickWe need to fill only integer value the observation b/w 14 & 22

x(2x + 3)(2x + 5)

    0.12

  4. DOption (d)

    0.18

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

0.18

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Mean marks of 50 students = 78.4

95 was misread as 59, 25 was misread as 52

Concept Used:

Mean of observations = sum of observations/Number of observations

Calculation

The sum of observations = X

⇒ Initial average = X/50 = 78.4

After correction,

Final average = [X + (95 - 59) + (25 - 52)] / 50

⇒ Final average = (X + 9) / 50

Therefore, required difference in average

⇒ (X + 9 - X) / 50 = 9/50 = 0.18

∴ The required difference is 0.18

Answer: (b)B.

(5−1)2\frac{(\sqrt5-1)}{2}

Why this answer is correct

Given:

In a triangle ABC, ∠A = 2θ, ∠B = ∠C = 4θ and θ satisfies 4 sin2θ + 2 sin θ - 1 = 0.

Concept used:

Isosceles triangle:

The altitude from vertex A to the base BC is the perpendicular bisector of the base BC.

Quadratic formula

−b±b2−4ac2a{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2-4ac} \over 2a}

sin θ = Perpendicular / Hypotenuse

Calculation:

4sin2θ + 2sin θ - 1 = 0

⇒ sinθ = −2±22−4×(−1)×(4)8 {-2 \pm \sqrt{2^2-4\times (-1) \times (4)} \over 8}

⇒ sinθ = −2±258 {-2 \pm 2\sqrt{5} \over 8}

⇒ sinθ = −2+258 {-2 + 2\sqrt{5} \over 8}

⇒ sinθ = 5−14 {\sqrt{5} - 1 \over 4}      ----(1)

In ΔABD,

⇒ sinθ = BDAB\frac{BD}{AB}           (sin θ = P/H)

Using equation (1)

⇒ba\frac{b}{{a}} = 5−14 {\sqrt{5} - 1 \over 4}             -----(2)

Now, in Δ ABD

⇒ BCAB\frac{BC}{{AB}} = 2ba\frac{2b}{{a}} = 2×ba2\times \frac{b}{{a}}

⇒ BCAB\frac{BC}{{AB}} = (2 × 5−14 {\sqrt{5} - 1 \over 4})       [From equation (2)]

⇒ BCAB\frac{BC}{{AB}} =(5−1)2\frac{(\sqrt5-1)}{2}

A circle is inscribed in a triangle ABC. It touches the sides BC, CA, AB at D, E, F respectively. What is ∠EDF equal to ?

  1. AOption (a)

    90° – A

  2. BOption (b)

    90° - (B+C)2\rm \frac{(B+C)}{2}

  3. COption (c)

    90° – 2A

  4. DOption (d)

    90° - (A2)\rm\left( \frac{A}{2}\right)

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

90° - (A2)\rm\left( \frac{A}{2}\right)

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

In an Inscribed Circle, the angle formed by the Contact Triangle vertices (like ∠EDF) is directly related to the opposite vertex angle.

The segments from vertices to contact points are equal tangents, creating Isosceles Triangles at each corner: ▵AFE, ▵BDF, and ▵CDE.

Property: The angle subtended by the chord joining two contact points at the third contact point is 90° − (Opposite Angle/2).

For ∠EDF, the opposite vertex is A. ⇒ ∠EDF = 90° − (A/2).

Similarly, ∠DEF = 90° − (B/2) and ∠EFD = 90° − (C/2).

∴ The correct answer is 90° − (A/2).

Alternate Method

Given:

A circle is inscribed in triangle ABC.

It touches the sides BC, CA and AB at points D, E and F respectively.

Concept Used:

  • The angle subtended by a chord at any point on the circumference is half the angle subtended by the same chord at the centre of the circle.
  • The sum of all angles of a quadrilateral is 360°.

Calculation:

We know that the radius is perpendicular to the tangent.

⇒ ∠AEO = ∠AFO = 90°

In quadrilateral AEOF, using the above concept:

⇒ 90° + 90° + A + ∠O = 360°

⇒ ∠O = 180° − A

We know that ∠EDF = 1/2 × ∠EOF

⇒ ∠EDF = (180° − A) ÷ 2

⇒ ∠EDF = 90° − A/2

∴ The value of ∠EDF is 90° − A/2.

Additional Information

Incenter and Inradius

The center of the inscribed circle (Incenter) is the intersection of the angle bisectors of the triangle. The inradius r = Area / s, where s is the semi-perimeter.

Tangent Properties

The distance from a vertex to the points of contact is s − a, s − b, and s − c for vertices A, B, and C respectively.

Contact Triangle

The triangle formed by joining the points of contact D, E, and F is called the Gergonne triangle or the Contact triangle of ▵ABC.

Question 70

The length of a room is 2116\frac{21}{16} times its breadth and breadth is 43\frac{4}{3} times its height. If H is the

height of the room and L is the longest rod that can be placed in the room, then which one of the following is correct ?

  1. AOption (a)

    12L = 29H

  2. BOption (b)

    9L = 25H

  3. COption (c)

    7L = 23H

  4. DOption (d)

    5L = 13H

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

12L = 29H

Why this answer is correct

Given:

The length of a room = 2116\frac{21}{16}  times it's breadth.

The breadth is 43\frac{4}{3} times its height.

Formula used:

Longest diagonal of the room = √(l2 + b2 + h2)

Where, l = length, b = breadth and h = height

Calculation:

Let the value of Height = 12

According to the question

Then, Breadth = (43\frac{4}{3} × 12) = 16

Length = (2116\frac{21}{16} × 16) = 21

Now, longest diagonal of the room = √(l2 + b2 + h2)

⇒ L = √(212 + 162 + 122)

⇒ L = √(441 + 256 + 144)

⇒ L = √841

⇒ L = 29

Now,

⇒ HL\frac{H}{{L}} = 1229\frac{12}{{29}}

⇒ 12L = 29H

∴ The required value is 12L = 29H.

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

l24(π2−1)\frac{l^2}{4}\left(\frac{\pi}{2}-1\right)

  2. BOption (b)

    5√2 cm

  3. COption (c)

    5√3 cm

  4. DOption (d)

    10 cm

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

5√3 cm

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

In a right-angled triangle, the square of the altitude (perpendicular) drawn to the hypotenuse is equal to the product of the segments of the hypotenuse it creates.

Property: AD2 = BD × DC

⇒ AD2 = 7.5 × 10 = 75

⇒ AD = √75 = √(25 × 3) = 5√3 cm

∴ The correct answer is 5√3 cm.

Alternate Method

Given:

Triangle ABC is right-angled at A (∠BAC = 90°).

AD ⊥ BC, BD = 7.5 cm, and DC = 10 cm.

Formula Used:

Geometric Mean Theorem: In a right triangle, the altitude to the hypotenuse divides the triangle into two similar triangles.

Calculations:

In ΔABC, ∠BAC = 90° and AD ⊥ BC.

⇒ ΔABD ∼ ΔCAD (by AA similarity criterion)

⇒ AD / CD = BD / AD

⇒ AD2 = BD × CD

⇒ AD2 = 7.5 × 10

⇒ AD2 = 75

⇒ AD = √75

⇒ AD = √(25 × 3)

⇒ AD = 5√3 cm

∴ The correct answer is 5√3 cm.

Additional Information

Right Triangle Similarity Theorem

If an altitude is drawn to the hypotenuse of a right triangle, then the two triangles formed are similar to the original triangle and to each other.

Geometric Mean (Leg) Theorem

Each leg of the right triangle is the geometric mean of the hypotenuse and the segment of the hypotenuse adjacent to that leg (e.g., AB2 = BD × BC).

Pythagoras Theorem

In any right-angled triangle, the sum of the squares of the two legs is equal to the square of the hypotenuse: a2 + b2 = c2.

    5 (AB + AC) (AB - AC) = 4 BC2

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

2 (AB + AC) (AB - AC) = BC2

Why this answer is correct

Concept used:

Pythagoras theorem: It states that In a right-angled triangle, the

square of the hypotenuse side is equal to the sum of the squares of

the other two sides.

Calculation:

Let, BD = 3, AD = 4 AB = 5

⇒ CD = 1         (∵ DB = 3 CD)

⇒ AC = √(16 + 1) = √17     (From Pythagoras theorem)

(AB + AC) (AB - AC) = AB2 - AC2

⇒ (AB + AC) (AB - AC) = 52 - (√17)2 = 8

From option (1)

2 (AB + AC) (AB - AC) = BC2

⇒ 2 × 8 = (3 + 1)2

⇒ 16 = 16

∴ The required value is 2 (AB + AC) (AB –  AC) = BC2

    0.6 cm

  4. DOption (d)

    0.75 cm

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

0.6 cm

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Volume of Sphere = Volume of Wire (Cylinder)

(4/3) × Rs3 = rw2 × L

(4/3) × (1.5)3 = rw2 × 50

4.5 = 50 × rw2 ⇒ rw2 = 0.09 ⇒ rw = 0.3 cm

Diameter of wire = 2 × 0.3 = 0.6 cm

∴ The correct answer is 0.6 cm.

Alternate Method

Given:

Diameter of Copper Sphere = 3 cm ⇒ Radius (R) = 1.5 cm

Length of Wire (h) = 0.5 m = 50 cm

Formula Used:

Volume of Sphere = (4/3) × π × R3

Volume of Cylinder = π × r2 × h

Calculations:

⇒ Volume of Sphere = (4/3) × π × (1.5)3

⇒ Volume of Wire = π × r2 × 50

⇒ (4/3) × π × 3.375 = π × r2 × 50

⇒ (4/3) × 3.375 = 50r2

⇒ 4 × 1.125 = 50r2

⇒ 4.5 = 50r2

⇒ r2 = 4.5 ÷ 50

⇒ r2 = 0.09

⇒ r = √0.09 = 0.3 cm

⇒ Diameter of wire = 2 × r = 2 × 0.3 = 0.6 cm

∴ The correct answer is 0.6 cm.

Additional Information

Volume of Cylinder

The volume of a cylinder with radius 'r' and height 'h' is V = πr2h.

Volume of Sphere

The volume of a sphere with radius 'R' is V = (4/3)πR3.

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

4

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick The dimensions of the open box formed will be (24 − 2x), (18 − 2x), and x. Volume of the box = Length × Breadth × Height = x × (24 − 2x) × (18 − 2x) By checking the given options, we can substitute x = 4 directly into the volume formula: Volume = 4 × (24 − 2 × 4) × (18 − 2 × 4) Volume = 4 × 16 × 10 = 640 cm3. Since this perfectly matches the given volume, we do not need to check further. ∴ The correct answer is 4 cm.

Alternate Method Given: Length of the rectangular sheet = 24 cm Breadth of the rectangular sheet = 18 cm Side of the square cut from each corner = x cm Volume of the open box = 640 cm3

Formula Used: Volume of a cuboid = Length × Breadth × Height Calculation: ⇒ When squares of side x are cut from the 4 corners, the remaining sheet is folded up to form an open box. ⇒ Length of the box (L) = 24 − 2x ⇒ Breadth of the box (B) = 18 − 2x ⇒ Height of the box (H) = x ⇒ Volume = (24 − 2x) × (18 − 2x) × x = 640 ⇒ Taking 2 common from the first two terms: ⇒ 2 × (12 − x) × 2 × (9 − x) × x = 640 ⇒ 4x × (12 − x) × (9 − x) = 640 ⇒ x(12 − x)(9 − x) = 160 ⇒ Since x must be less than 9 (otherwise breadth becomes negative or zero), we test the options. ⇒ If x = 4: 4 × (12 − 4) × (9 − 4) = 4 × 8 × 5 = 160 ⇒ This satisfies the algebraic equation perfectly. ∴ The correct answer is 4 cm.

Additional Information Valid Range for 'x' Since dimensions cannot be negative, the cut side x must be strictly less than half of the smaller side of the rectangle. Here, 18 − 2x > 0 implies x < 9 cm. Total Surface Area of Open Box The outer surface area of the resulting open box is simply the original area of the rectangular sheet minus the area of the 4 cut-out corner squares: Area = (L × B) − 4x2. Maximized Volume Concept To find the specific value of x that maximizes the volume of such a box, we use calculus by setting the first derivative equal to zero (dV/dx = 0).

∴ The required value is 1740\frac{17}{40}.

Question 84

Two parallel sides of a trapezium are 29 cm and 21 cm. Non-parallel sides are equal and each is of length 8.5 cm. What is the area of the trapezium?

  1. AOption (a)

    187.5 square cm

  2. BOption (b)

    227.5 square cm

  3. COption (c)

    375 square cm

  4. DOption (d)

    455 square cm

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

187.5 square cm

Why this answer is correct

Formula used:

Area of trapezium = 12\frac{1}{2} × sum of parallel sides × height

Calculation:

In ΔAED, by Pythagoras theorem,

⇒ AD2 = AE2 + DE2

⇒ (8.5)2 = (4)2 + DE2

⇒ 72.25 = 16 + DE2

⇒ DE2 = 56.25

⇒ DE = 7.5 cm

Area of trapezium = 12\frac{1}{2} × sum of parallel sides × height

⇒ A = 12\frac{1}{2}(29 + 21) × 7.5 cm2

⇒ A = 12\frac{1}{2} × 50 × 7.5 cm2

⇒ A = 187.5 cm2

∴ The required area is 187.5 square cm.

Question 85

A square copper plate of side 16 cm weighs 128 gm. A circular disc of diameter 14 cm is cut off from the plate. What is the weight of the remaining part ? (π = 227\frac{22}{7})

  1. AOption (a)

    48 gm

  2. BOption (b)

    49 gm

  3. COption (c)

    50 gm

  4. DOption (d)

    51 gm

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

51 gm

Why this answer is correct

Given:

The side of the square plate = 16 cm

Diameter = 14 cm

Weight of copper plate = 128 gm

Formula used:

Area of square = (side)2

Area of circle = π4d2\frac{\pi}{4}d^2

Calculation:

Using the above concept

Area of square

A1 = (side)2

A1 = (16)2 = 256 cm2

Now, the area of the circular disc

A2 = π4(14)2=224×7×142\frac{\pi}{4}(14)^2 = \frac{22}{4\times7}\times 14^2 cm2

⇒ A2 = 154 cm2

The area of the remaining part of the plate = A1 - A2

⇒ A = (256 - 154) cm2 = 102 cm2

The weight of 256 cm2 plate = 128 gm

The weight of 102 cm2 of the plate = 128×102256\frac{128\times 102}{256} = 51 gm

∴ The weight of the remaining part is 51 gm.

Question 86

The area of a rhombus is 96 square cm and one of its diagonals is of length 12 cm. What is the perimeter of the rhombus ?

  1. AOption (a)

    36 cm

  2. BOption (b)

    40 cm

  3. COption (c)

    44 cm

  4. DOption (d)

    48 cm

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

40 cm

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Area = (d1 × d2) ÷ 2 ⇒ 96 = (12 × d2) ÷ 2 ⇒ d2 = 16 cm.

Side (a) = √[(d1/2)2 + (d2/2)2] = √[62 + 82] = 10 cm.

Perimeter = 4 × side = 4 × 10 = 40 cm.

∴ The correct answer is 40 cm.

Alternate Method

Given: Area of rhombus = 96 cm2, Diagonal 1 (d1) = 12 cm.

Formula Used: Area = 1/2 × d1 × d2; Side (a) = 1/2 × √(d12 + d22); Perimeter = 4a.

⇒ Area = 1/2 × d1 × d2

⇒ 96 = 1/2 × 12 × d2

⇒ 96 = 6 × d2 ⇒ d2 = 16 cm

⇒ Side (a) = √[(d1/2)2 + (d2/2)2]

⇒ a = √[62 + 82] = √[36 + 64] = √100 = 10 cm

⇒ Perimeter = 4 × a = 4 × 10 = 40 cm

∴ The correct answer is 40 cm.

Additional Information

Properties of Rhombus

All sides are equal and diagonals bisect each other at 90°. The area can also be calculated as base × height.

Relation between Side and Diagonals

4a2 = d12 + d22, where 'a' is the side and d1, d2 are the diagonals.

Pythagorean Triplets

Common triplets like (6, 8, 10) or (3, 4, 5) help in finding the side quickly when half-diagonals are known.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

160

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Theorem:

if a right triangle is inscribed in a circle then the hypotenuse will be

the diameter of the circle.

p1=abc\frac{p}{1} = \frac{ab}{c}

Calculation:

We know that

Radius of circle OC = OA = OB = 10 cm

Hypotenuse (AC) = (2 × 10) cm = 20 cm

Now, using the above concept

⇒ 81=xy20\frac{8}{1}= \frac{xy}{20}

⇒ xy = 160

∴ The required value is 160.

<br>

Alternate Method

Area of a triangle with base BC & height AB

A = 12\frac{1}{2} xy        -----(1)

Altitude to the hypotenuse BM = 8 cm

From the concept discussed above,

Radius of circle OC = OA = OB = 10 cm

Hypotenuse (AC) = (2 × 10) cm = 20 cm

Since, Area of triangle = 1/2 × base × height

Area of a triangle with base AC & height BM

⇒ A = 12\frac{1}{2} × 8 × 20 = 80

From equation (1)

⇒ 12\frac{1}{2} xy = 80

⇒ xy = 160

∴ The required value is 160.

Question 88

Two circles touch externally. The sum of their areas is 89π square cm and the distance between their centres is 13 cm. What is the difference in their radii?

    2 cm

  2. BOption (b)

    2.5 cm

  3. COption (c)

    3 cm

  4. DOption (d)

    3.5 cm

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

3 cm

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Sum of areas of two circles touching each other externally

= 89π cm2

Distance between the centers = 13 cm

Formula used:

Area of a circle = πx2

Where x = radius of the circle

Calculation:

<br>

Let the radii of two circles be R and r

According to the question:

R + r = 13 cm    ----(i)

Also, πR2 + πr2 = 89π

⇒ R2 + r2 = 89

We know that

(R + r)2 = R2 + r2 + 2Rr

⇒ 169 = 89 + 2Rr

⇒ Rr = 40    ----(ii)

From (i) and (ii), we get

⇒ R(13 - R) = 40

⇒ R2 - 13R + 40 = 0

⇒ (R - 8)(R - 5) = 0

⇒ R = 8, 5; r = 5, 8

∴ Difference between their radii = 3 cm

Question 89

A square and a rectangle have same perimeter. They differ in areas by 1 square cm. The length of the rectangle exceeds its breadth by

  1. AOption (a)

    1 cm

  2. BOption (b)

    2 cm

  3. COption (c)

    3 cm

  4. DOption (d)

    4 cm

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

2 cm

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Let the rectangle's length and breadth be (x + d) and (x − d) cm.

Perimeter = 2(x + d + x − d) = 4x. For the same perimeter, the square's side is x.

Area difference = Area of Square − Area of Rectangle = x2 − (x + d)(x − d) = d2.

Given d2 = 1 ⇒ d = 1 cm.

Difference between length and breadth = (x + d) − (x − d) = 2d = 2(1) = 2 cm.

∴ The correct answer is 2 cm.

Alternate Method

Given:

Perimeter of square = Perimeter of rectangle

Difference in Areas = 1 cm2

Formula Used:

Area of square = a2, Perimeter of square = 4a

Area of rectangle = l × b, Perimeter of rectangle = 2(l + b)

Algebraic identity: (l + b)2 − 4lb = (l − b)2

Calculations:

⇒ Perimeter of square = Perimeter of rectangle

⇒ 4a = 2(l + b)

⇒ a = (l + b) / 2

For a given perimeter, a square encloses a greater area than a rectangle. So, Area of Square − Area of Rectangle = 1

⇒ a2 − (l × b) = 1

⇒ ((l + b) / 2)2 − lb = 1

⇒ (l2 + b2 + 2lb) / 4 − lb = 1

⇒ (l2 + b2 + 2lb − 4lb) / 4 = 1

⇒ (l2 + b2 − 2lb) / 4 = 1

⇒ (l − b)2 / 4 = 1

⇒ (l − b)2 = 4

⇒ l − b = √4 = 2 cm

∴ The correct answer is 2 cm.

Additional Information

Maximum Area for Given Perimeter

For a fixed perimeter, a regular polygon (like a square) always encloses the maximum area compared to any non-regular polygon (like a rectangle) of the same perimeter.

Minimum Perimeter for Given Area

Conversely, for a fixed area, a square has the minimum possible perimeter among all valid rectangles.

Direct Area Difference Identity

The difference between the area of a square and a rectangle sharing the same perimeter can be calculated directly using: Areasq − Arearect = ((l − b) / 2)2.

Question 90

Two rectangles are of same area equal to 480 square cm. They differ in lengths by 6 cm and breadths by 4 cm. What is the difference in their perimeters ?

  1. AOption (a)

    2 cm

  2. BOption (b)

    4 cm

  3. COption (c)

    6 cm

  4. DOption (d)

    10 cm

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

4 cm

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Two rectangles are of the same area equal = 480 cm2

They differ in length by 6 cm and breadth by 4 cm

Formula used:

Area of rectangle = l × b

Perimeter of rectangle = 2(l + b)

Where, l = length and b = breadth

Shortcut Trick

For the same figure,

The difference in perimeter = Difference in the sum of sides

⇒ P1 - P2 = 2(l + b) - 2(l + 6 + b - 4)

⇒ P1 - P2 = 2(6 - 4) = 4

<br>

Alternate Method

Let the length and breadth of two rectangles be l1b1 and l2b2 respectively.

According to the question

⇒ l1b1 = 480         ------(1)

⇒ l2b2 = 480         ------(2)

They differ in length by 6 cm and breadth by 4 cm

Then, length of second rectangle (l2) = (l1 + 6) cm

Then, breadth of second rectangle (b2) = (b1 – 4) cm

Perimeter of first rectangle = 2(l1 + b1)

Perimeter of second rectangle = 2(l1 + 6 + b1 – 4)

⇒ 2(l1 + b1) + 4

The difference in their perimeters is

⇒ 2(l1 + b1) – 2(l1 + b1) + 4

⇒ 4 cm

∴ The required difference in their perimeters is 4 cm.

Mistake PointsIf the length of the first rectangle increases then to make the area

the same, the breadth will decrease.

Question 91

A closed box is built of wood of uniform thickness. Its external dimensions are 12 cm, 10 cm and 8 cm. If the inner surface area is 376 square cm, then what is the thickness of the wood ?

  1. AOption (a)

    0:5 cm

  2. BOption (b)

    1 cm

  3. COption (c)

    1.5 cm

  4. DOption (d)

    2 cm

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

1 cm

Why this answer is correct

Given:

The external length, breadth & height are 12 cm, 10 cm, & 8 cm

The inner surface area of the box = 376 cm2

Concept used:

For a cuboid of external length, breadth and height l, b & h

The external surface area = 2(lb + bh + lh)

If t is the thickness of the cuboid then internal dimensions

Length = l - 2t, breadth = b - 2t, height = h - 2t

Shortcut TrickLet thickens of wood = 1 cm

External DimensionsInternal Dimensions
Length12 cm12 - 2 × 1 = 10
Breadth10 cm10 - 2 × 1 = 8
Height8 cm8 - 2 × 1 = 6

Area = 2( 10 × 8 + 8 × 6 + 6 × 10)

Area  = 2(80 + 48 + 60) = 376 = given area

∴ The thickness of the box is 1 cm.

Alternate Method

Let the thickness of the box be t cm.

Using the above concept, internal surface area

Ai = 2[(12 - 2t)(10 - 2t) + (10 - 2t)(8 - 2t) + (12 - 2t)(8 - 2t)]

According to the question, Ai = 376

⇒ 2[(12 - 2t)(10 - 2t) + (10 - 2t)(8 - 2t) + (12 - 2t)(8 - 2t)] = 376

⇒ 8[(t2 - 11t + 30) + (t2 - 10t + 24) + (t2 - 9t + 20)] = 376

⇒ 3t2 - 30t + 74 = 47

⇒ 3t2 - 30t + 27 = 0

⇒ t2 - 10t + 9 = 0

⇒ t2 - 9t - t + 9 = 0

⇒ t(t - 9) - 1(t - 9) = 0

⇒ (t - 9)(t - 1) = 0

⇒ t = 9 or 1

Therefore, from the given options

∴ The thickness of the box is 1 cm.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

10 cm

Why this answer is correct

Given:

X, Y and Z are three equilateral triangles.

The side of X = 6 cm

The side of Y = 8 cm

Concept used:

Area of equilateral triangle = √34\frac{√3}{{4}}a2

Calculation:

Area of equilateral triangle = √34\frac{√3}{{4}}a2

According to the question

AX + AY = AZ

⇒ (√34\frac{√3}{{4}} × 62) + (√34\frac{√3}{{4}} × 82) = (34\frac{\sqrt3}{{4}} × x2)

⇒ 36 + 64 = x2

⇒ 100 = x2

⇒ x = 10

∴ The side length of Z is 10 cm.

Question 93

What is the time taken by a person to cover one round of a circular park of diameter 210 m if he walks at a speed of 6 km/hr ? (π = 227\frac{22}{7})

    4.4 minutes

  4. DOption (d)

    3.3 minutes

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

6.6 minutes

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Diameter of a circular park = 210 m

Speed of the person = 6 km/hr

Concept:

Convert km/h into m/min multiply by 50/3

Formula Used:

Distance = Speed × Time

Circumference of circle = 2πr

Calculation:

We have,

Diameter of a circular park = 210 m

Radius of a circular park = 105 m

Circumference of circle = 2×227×1052 \times \frac{22}{7} \times 105

Circumference = 660 m

Distance = 660 m

Speed = 6km/h×5036km/h \times \frac{50}{3} = 100m/min

⇒ Time = Distance/Speed

⇒ T = 660100\frac{660}{100}

⇒ T = 6.6 min

∴ Time taken by a person to cover one round of circular park is 6.6 min.

  4. DOption (d)

    (4√3 - π) square cm

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

(3√3 - π) square cm

Why this answer is correct

Given:

Side of an equilateral triangle = 232\sqrt3 cm

A circle is inscribed in a triangle.

Formula Used:

Radius of inscribed circle(r) = side23\frac{side}{2\sqrt3}

Area of equilateral triangle = 34(side)2\frac{\sqrt3}{4}(side)^2

Area of circle = πr2

Calculation:

We have,

Radius of circle = 2323\frac{2\sqrt3}{2\sqrt3} = 1 cm

Area of shaded region = Area of an equilateral triangle - Area of a circle

Area of shaded region = 34(23)2−π(1)2\frac{\sqrt3}{4}(2\sqrt3)^2 - \pi (1)^2

Area of shaded region = 34×4×3−π\frac{\sqrt3}{4} \times 4 \times 3 - \pi

Area of shaded region = (33−π3\sqrt3 - \pi ) cm2

∴ Area of the remaining portion of the triangle is (33−π3\sqrt3 - \pi ) cm2

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

15

Why this answer is correct

Given:

A triangle has side lengths x cm, x + 13 cm and x + 26 cm

Area of triangle = 126 square cm

Formula Used:

Heron's formula:- Δ = s(s−a)(s−b)(s−c)\sqrt{s(s - a)(s - b)(s-c)}

Perimeter:- s = a+b+c2\frac{a + b + c}{2}

Calculation:

We have,

⇒ Δ = s(s−a)(s−b)(s−c)\sqrt{s(s - a)(s - b)(s-c)}

⇒ a = x, b = x + 13, c = x + 26

By option selection method,

Put x = 15

⇒ a = 15, b = 28, c = 41

⇒ s = 15 + 28 + 412\frac{15 \ + \ 28 \ + \ 41}{2} = 84/2 = 42

⇒ Δ = 42(42−15)(42−28)(42−41)\sqrt{42(42 - 15)(42 - 28)(42 - 41)}

⇒ Δ = 42×27×14×1\sqrt{42 × 27 × 14 × 1}

⇒ Δ = 14×81×14\sqrt{14 × 81 × 14}

⇒ Δ = 14 × 9

⇒ Δ = 126 cm2

∴ The value of x is 15 cm.

    Both 1 and 2

  4. DOption (d)

    Neither 1 nor 2

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

Only 1

Why this answer is correct

Given:

ABCD is a parallelogram.

A circle through A, B and C intersects CD (produced) at E.

Concept used:

Theorem:

  1. In Parallelogram ABCD, opposite angles are always equal.
  2. In a cyclic quadrilateral, the sum of a pair of opposite angles is 180°
  3. The sum of angles of a linear pair is always equal to 180°.
  4. The angles opposite to the equal sides are equal in measure.

Calculation:

∠ ABC = ∠ ADC = θ         (Theorem 1)

∠ABC + ∠AED = 180°      (Theorem 2)

⇒ ∠ AED = 180° - θ        ------(1)

∠ADE + θ = 180°             (Theorem 3)

⇒ ∠ADE = 180° - θ        ------(2)

From equation (1) &  (2)

∠AED = ∠ADE

Statement: 1

We know that, ∠AED = ∠ADE

From theorem 4,

AE = AD

Hence, statement 1 is correct.

Statement: 2

CD = DE is only possible if D become the centre of the circle and CD, DE radius. but we take D from the centre, parallelogram ABCD will not be possible such that A, B & C lies on the circle and AB = CD & BC = AD

Hence,  statement 2 is incorrect.

∴ Only statement 1 is correct.

    1, 2 and 3

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

1, 2 and 3

Why this answer is correct

Concept:

Centroid:- The point in which the three medians of the triangle intersect.

Centroid of a triangle is the point located at 2/3rd of the distance from the vertex along the median.

Centre of circumcircle:- The point where the perpendicular bisectors of the sides of that particular triangle intersect.

Cyclic quadrilateral:- A quadrilateral which has all its four vertices lying on a circle.

  • Property of cyclic quadrilateral:- The sum of a pair of opposite angles is 180°.

Rectangle:- It is a four-sided polygon, having all the internal angles equal to 90°.

Property of parallelogram:- Opposite angles of a parallelogram are equal.

Property of triangle:- Sum of all angles of a triangle is 180°.

Calculation:

Statement I: In an equilateral triangle, the centroid and center of the circumcircle coincide.

Let G be the centroid of △ABC.

In △BEC and △BFC,

⇒ ∠B = ∠C = 60°

⇒ BC = BC

⇒ BF = CE   ---- (1)[Since AB = AC and E and F are the mid points]

⇒ △BEC ≅ △BFC

Similarly, △CAF ≅ △CAD

⇒ CF = AD    ------ (2)

From equations (1) and (2), we get

⇒ AD = BE = CF

⇒ 23AD=23BE=23CF\frac{2}{3}AD = \frac{2}{3}BE =\frac{2}{3}CF

⇒ GA = GB = GC

G is equidistant from the vertices.

G is the circumcentre of △ABC.

Hence, the centroid and circumcentre coincide.

So, the statement I is correct.

Statement II: Angle bisectors of a cyclic quadrilateral form another cyclic quadrilateral.

We have,

ABCD is a quadrilateral and PQRS is a quadrilateral formed by the angle bisectors of ∠A, ∠B, ∠C, and ∠D.

In △APD

⇒ ∠PAD + ∠ADP + ∠APD = 180°     ------ (1)

Similarly, In △BQC,

⇒ ∠QBC + ∠BCQ + ∠BQC = 180°     ------ (2)

Adding (1) and (2), we get

⇒ ∠PAD + ∠ADP + ∠APD + ∠QBC + ∠BCQ + ∠BQC = 180° + 180°

⇒ ∠PAD + ∠ADP + ∠APD + ∠QBC + ∠BCQ + ∠BQC = 360°

But ∠PAD + ∠ADP + ∠QBC + ∠BCQ = 12\frac{1}{2}(∠A + ∠B + ∠C + ∠D)

⇒ ∠PAD + ∠ADP + ∠QBC + ∠BCQ = 12×360°\frac{1}{2} \times 360°  = 180°

⇒ ∠APD + ∠BQC = 360° - 180° = 180°

So, these are the sum of opposite angles of quadrilateral PQRS.

So, PQRS is a cyclic quadrilateral.

Hence, Statement II is correct.

Statement III: Every cyclic parallelogram is a rectangle.

In a cyclic parallelogram ABCD,

⇒ ∠A + ∠C = 180°    ------ (1) [by property of cyclic quad.]

⇒ ∠A = ∠C     ------ (2)

From equation (1) and (2)

⇒ ∠A + ∠A = 180°

⇒ 2∠A = 180°

⇒ ∠A = 90°

⇒ ∠A = ∠C = 90°

Similarly, ∠ A = ∠B = ∠C = ∠D = 90°

Hence, cyclic parallelogram is a rectangle.

So, statement III is correct.

∴ All the statements are correct.

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

1, 2 and 3

Why this answer is correct

Given:

ABCD is a trapezium in which AB is parallel to DC.

The vertices A, B, C and D pass through a circle.

Concept used:

In cyclic quadrilateral, the sum of a pair of opposite angles is 180°

If two lines are parallel, Then the angles on the same side of the transversal are 180° .

Calculation:

Let ∠BCD = 110°

Using the above concept

∠BCD + ∠DAF = 180°

⇒ 110° + ∠DAF = 180°

⇒ ∠DAF = 70°

Draw ⊥ CE &  DF on AB

In ΔDAF, ∠AFD = 90°

⇒ 70° + 90° + ∠ADF = 180°

⇒ ∠ADF = 20°

Simiarly,  ∠BCF = 70°

Statement 1.

⇒ AD = BC

⇒ ∠F = ∠E  [90°]

⇒ DF = CE

So, ΔADF ~ ΔBCE

⇒  AD = BC

So, statement 1 is true.

Statement 2.

As discussed above in cyclic quadrilateral ABCD, the sum of a pair

of opposite angles is 180°

⇒ ∠A + ∠C = 180°

So, statement 2 is true.

Statement 2.

⇒ ∠A + ∠D = (70° + 110°)

⇒ ∠A + ∠D = 180°

So, statement 3 is also true.

∴ The required answer is 1, 2 and 3.

Question 99

ABCD is a cyclic quadrilateral. AB and DC when produced, meet in E. Which of the following statements is/are correct?

1. ΔEBC is similar to ΔEAD. 2. ∠CBE + ∠DAE = 180°.

Select the correct answer using the code given below :

  1. AOption (a)

    Only 1

  2. BOption (b)

    Only 2

  3. COption (c)

    Both 1 and 2

  4. DOption (d)

    Neither 1 nor 2

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

Neither 1 nor 2

Why this answer is correct

Concept:

Similar Triangle:

  • Both have the same shape but sizes may be different
  • Each pair of corresponding angles are equal.
  • The ratio of corresponding sides is the same.

Cyclic Quadrilateral: A cyclic quadrilateral has opposite angles that sum 180 degrees, the total sum of the angles equals 360 degrees.

Calculation:

Statement I: ΔEBC is similar to ΔEAD.

<br>

In △EBC and △EAD,

⇒ ∠E = ∠E    [common]

From the figure

 ∠EBC = α, ∠EAD = θ

So, ∠EBC ≠ ∠EAD

We know that Each pair of corresponding angles of a similar triangle should

be equal.

Therefore,

But △EBC ~ △EAD is not correct

Statement II:

⇒ ∠CBE + ∠DAE = α + θ

We know that

α + θ  = 180° will be possible if ABCD is square. In this case, line AB & CD

will not intersect at E.

α + θ  ≠ 180°

Hence, Statement II is incorrect.

∴ Both statement I & II are incorrect.

Question 100

In a triangle ABC, DE is a line segment which intersects AB at D and AC at E such that DE is parallel to BC. The line segment divides the triangle in two parts of equal area. What is BDAB\rm \frac{BD}{AB} equal to ?

  1. AOption (a)

    2−12\frac{\sqrt2-1}{2}

  2. BOption (b)

    2−12\frac{\sqrt2-1}{\sqrt2}

  3. COption (c)

    3−13\frac{\sqrt3-1}{\sqrt3}

  4. DOption (d)

    √2

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

2−12\frac{\sqrt2-1}{\sqrt2}

Why this answer is correct

Concept:

Area of similar triangle Theorem:

If two triangles are similar, then the ratio of the area of both triangles is proportional to the square of the ratio of their corresponding sides.

Calculation:

We have,

⇒ DE || BC

⇒ ar(△ADE) = ar(△trap.DEBC)

⇒ ar(△ADE) = ar(△ABC) - ar(DBCE )

⇒ 2ar(△ADE) = ar(△ABC)      ------ (1)

In △ADE and △ABC

⇒ ∠A = ∠A    [common]

⇒ ∠ADE = ∠ABC    [corresponding angles]

⇒ △ADE ~ △ABC    [by AA similarity]

By area of similar triangle theorem

⇒ ar(△ADE)ar(△ABC)=AD2AB2\frac{ar(△ADE)}{ar(△ABC)} = \frac{AD^2}{AB^2}

⇒ ar(△ADE)2ar(△ADE)=AD2AB2\frac{ar(△ADE)}{2ar(△ADE)} = \frac{AD^2}{AB^2}      by using (1)

⇒ 12=AD2AB2\frac{1}{2} = \frac{AD^2}{AB^2}

Taking square root

⇒ 12=ADAB\frac{1}{\sqrt2} = \frac{AD}{AB}

⇒ 12=AB − BDAB\frac{1}{\sqrt2} = \frac{AB \ - \ BD}{AB}

⇒ 12=1−BDAB\frac{1}{\sqrt2} = 1 - \frac{BD}{AB}

⇒ BDAB=1−12\frac{BD}{AB} = 1 - \frac{1}{\sqrt2}

⇒ BDAB=2 − 12\frac{BD}{AB} = \frac{\sqrt2 \ - \ 1}{\sqrt2}

∴ The ratio of BD/AB is 2 − 12\frac{\sqrt2 \ - \ 1}{\sqrt2}
