Question 1081

SBI Clerk 2020• General English• General English

**Read the given passage and answer the questions given below.

Some words may be highlighted.**

Plastics, chemicals and oil management (1) pollute and endanger marine ecosystems. Yet cleaning up the ocean is rarely, if ever, possible. Solutions must therefore consist in reducing waste and other hazardous materials. For decades, waste and hazardous materials have been dumped into the ocean as a result of human activity. Covering more than two-thirds of the Earth’s surface, the ocean is so vast that human carelessness seemed unlikely ever to affect it. But it is now a known fact that, in addition to overfishing, warming caused by climate change, ever-increasing maritime transport, and ocean acidification, pollution is a threat to marine organisms and their habitats. One of the key aiding factors to this is vast scale pollution is the dumping of plastic. By its sheer scale, plastic contamination symbolises the human impact on the environment, above all other forms of man-made pollution. Due to poor waste spills (2), it is estimated that every year, 10 million tonnes of plastic are dumped into the sea, 80% of which comes from inland, mainly via rivers. “From coastal regions to the poles, and from the ocean surface to the seafloor, no area of the ocean is free from this pollution. As a result, all the essential services provided by the ocean to the planet and to humankind are likely to be seriously disrupted. The world’s population depends to a large extent on marine resources, not only for food but also for economic purposes, from tourism to the transport of goods. The ocean is also vital to the climate since it absorbs 25% of the CO2 emitted by human activity into the atmosphere every year. Deep-sea organisms also play a key role in the functioning of this biological carbon pump where phytoplankton, at the bottom of the marine food chain, use CO2 and transform it into organic matter, part of which sinks to the ocean floor. In the process, these microscopic algae and bacteria provide half the oxygen produced on Earth.

The whole food result (3) is impacted, from zooplankton to whales,” points out Ika Paul-Pont of the Laboratory of Environmental Marine Sciences. In addition to larger waste such as bags and bottles, which can cause the death of animals by entanglement or intestinal obstruction when ingested, plastic pollution turns out to be particularly insidious, as it is made up of billions of particles, sometimes less than a few millimetres in diameter, produced by the decomposing of plastic caused by UV radiation and wave action. These microplastics, as they are known, are ingested by all marine fauna, even the very smallest organisms, with a wide range of effects. Once swallowed (4), these pollutants can prevent animals from feeding normally, which affects their growth, reproduction and immune defences. “We exposed oysters to microplastics in the laboratory. These molluscs feed on microalgae by filtering water, ingesting plastic in the process. The presence of the polymer means the shellfish have to devote more energy to filtration – and therefore less to reproduction. As a chain (5), we’ve observed a 40% drop in the hatching rate compared to uncontaminated oysters,” Paul-Pont explains. More recently, scientists, including CNRS researchers, have also discovered that microplastics continue to break down into even smaller, nanometre-sized particles. They are able to cross cell membranes and may pose an even greater toxicity hazard. Although this field of research is still in its infancy, its findings are eagerly awaited. Ocean ecosystems are indeed not the only ones exposed to such pollution, since marine wildlife eventually ends up in our plates!

There are 5 fixed positions in the passage and one word has been placed in each position. Rearrange the words so that the passage makes complete sense.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

Even the very small organisms, including all the marine fauna ingest the microplastics.

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is Even the very small organisms, including all the marine fauna ingest the microplastics.

Key Points

  • Reading the passage we find the following line:
  • 'These microplastics, as they are known, are ingested by all marine fauna, even the very smallest organisms, with a wide range of effects.'
  • Thus it is clear from the above line that Option1 is the correct answer.

  • One might tend to choose option 3 as the correct option, but it is wrong.
  • Only 25% of the CO2  is absorbed by the ocean according to the passage.
  • In the option it is given that half of the CO2  is absorbed, therefore, it is the wrong answer.

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

Both A and B

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is "Both A and B".

Key Points

  • For the time being means for the present; until some other arrangement is made.
  • If something is the case or will happen for the time being, it is the case or will happen now, but only until something else becomes possible or happens.
  • For example: For the time being, however, immunotherapy is still in its experimental stages.
  • For example: The situation is calm for the time being.
  • Synonyms: for now, meanwhile, meantime, in the meantime
  • The first part of the sentence implies that they will go to New York but right now they are staying in London. It means until some other arrangement is made or we can say for the present time.

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

Only C

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is option 4), i.e., Only C

Explanation

  • It is implied that either nothing unusual or strange happens to this person or he remains unaffected by all such things.
  • We use 'Come hell or high water' when we want to emphasise that we won't be discouraged from doing what we want to no matter what happens.
  • So what is being said of this person is that he never misses his race and isn't going to miss the next one no matter what difficulties may occur.
  • We can understand its meaning if we think of high water as 'Tsunami' or 'flood' because in such situations it is quite impossible to keep some of our promises.
  • Therefore, only C is correct here.

Here quirk is correctly used. 'Quirk' means a peculiar trait

Sentence B) These particles are much, much lighter than quirks, and pass through the cosmos ethereally, rarely stopping to interact with anything at all.

Here use of quirk makes no sense. 'Quark' should be there in place of 'Quirk'. Quark means any of several elementary particles that are postulated to come in pairs

Sentence C) Hugh Dancy’s a delightful addition to the cast, but giving his legal associate a photographic memory feels like one quirk too many.

Here quirk is correctly used. 'Quirk' means a peculiar trait

So sentences A and C are correct.

  • The word is used incorrectly in sentences B and C. The best possible substitutions are:
  • Sentence B : Being the baby of the family he was coddled (to be treated in an overprotective way) and treated like glass as if he would break.
  • Sentence C : He also composes (creates) music to suit the lead characters of a particular film.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

B and D

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is Option 3 i.e. B and D are error-free parts of the sentence.

Key Points

  • Reading the above sentence we find that it is a continuous sentence from the verb operating in part C.
  • Therefore the verb 'fail' in part A should be in the continuous form i.e the present participle (-ing) form.
  • So we need to change the verb fail to the '-ing' form failing.
  • In Part C the word 'Politics' is a singular noun and therefore verb seem should be changed to seems.
  • Thus the error lies in part A and C, therefore the error-free parts are B and D.

Additional Information

  • Not all ing forms are present participles.
  • The ing form of the verb when it acts as a noun is called a gerund.
  • A gerund is a verb form that functions as a 'noun'. It is formed by adding 'ing' to a verb.
  • Examples:
  • He told the joke without laughing.
  • They are afraid of losing the match.
  • A gerund can be used as a subject because it acts as a noun.

Correct answer: "Further, with the Opposition failing to show any signs of resilience, national politics seems to be operating in the absence of any credible political check."

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

A, B and C

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is option 3 i.e. Parts A, B, and C

Key Points

  • In part D of the sentence the usage of 'had told' is wrong use "had been told".
  • In part D The two congressmen are told about the normalcy in The Union Territory by somebody else.
  • So they are not the doer, The doer is somebody else. Since the doer is not mentioned we have to write it in the passive voice.
  • Let's see some examples to get more clarity:
  • He has just been elected as a member of the committee.
  • She had already been admitted to the hospital.

So the Correct Sentence is:

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

B, C and D

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is  B, C and, D

Key Points

  • According to the rule of Relative pronoun.
  • The usage of 'who' is with persons and the usage of 'which' is with things.
  • So The securities and exchange board of India is a thing, not a person. So the usage of "who" is wrong in the sentence. Instead, use which
  • The usage of a definite article with "information" is correct. Because in this sentence the speaker is talking about the specific types of information.
  • Don't use a/an with information as it is an uncountable noun.
  • Let's see some examples:
  • It is I who is responsible for this mischief.
  • The boy who lived in a village become an officer now.

So the correct answer is option 1.

The board of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), which met on Wednesday, made such disclosures mandatory in the light of many recent instances of default wherein the information was not available to all categories of stakeholders.

  5. EOption (e)

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

A, C and D

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is  A, C, and D

Key Points

The above sentence is a type of conditional sentence. Let's understand what are conditional sentences by a table:

Open(conditional sentences)(probable action)Semi-closed(conditional sentences)(Improbable action)Closed(conditional sentences)
The principle clause in the present tense and main clause in the future tense.Principle clause is in would+v1 form and the subordinate clause is present subjunctive mood(should be written in Past)If+had+v3+subject+would+have+v3
For eg: If he works hard, he will succeed. For eg: If he worked hard, he would succeed. For eg: If he had worked hard, he would have succeeded.

So according to the above-mentioned table If the 'if clause' is in 'present tense' then the 'main clause' should be in 'future tense'.

  • So the usage of "would" in the main clause is wrong in the sentence use "will" for the future tense.

So the correct sentence is:

If the COVID-19 pandemic lashes India with severity, it will not be just the middle class who will be affected. India’s impoverished millions are likely to overwhelmingly bear the brunt of the suffering which will ensue.

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

A, B and, C

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is  option (2) i.e. A, B and, C

Key Points

  • In part D of the sentence, the use of the pronoun 'itself' is wrong.
  • According to the rule, we use the reflexive pronoun only when the subject of the verb is the receiver of the action,
  • In the above sentence, it is very clear that the subject of the action is not the receiver of the action.
  • In such a case using the pronoun 'itself' is not warranted and makes the sentence erroneous.
  • Hence the error lies in part D
  • So the correct answer is A, B and, C since it is error-free.

Correct sentence*: "Granting the exemption, the government order said that the consolidated mark sheets for these students will have marks for Class 12 alone. It also added that the exemption did not apply to students appearing for Class 12 examinations as private candidates. "*

Question 1099

SBI Clerk 2020• General English• General English

**Read the following passage and answer the questions given below.

Some words may be highlighted read carefully.**

When it comes to your health, sleep plays an important role. While more sleep won’t necessarily prevent you from getting sick, skimping on it could adversely affect your immune system, leaving you susceptible to a bad cold or case of the flu. To keep yourself sniffle-free this season, here’s what you need to know. Sleep and cytokines, without sufficient sleep, your body makes fewer cytokines, a type of protein that targets infection and inflammation, effectively creating an immune response. cytokines are both produced and released during sleep, causing a double whammy if you skimp on shut-eye. Despite numerous studies proving the negative health impacts of poor sleep, experts say many people still don’t prioritize getting enough sleep. Chronic sleep loss even makes the flu vaccine less effective by reducing your body’s ability to respond. Stock up on naps to stay healthy, especially during the influenza season, get the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep a night. This will help keep your immune system in fighting shape which protects you from other health issues including heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.  If your sleep schedule is interrupted by a busy workweek or other factors, try to make up for the lost rest with naps. Taking two naps that are no longer than 30 minutes each —one in the morning and one in the afternoon—has been shown to help decrease stress and offset the negative effects that sleep deprivation has on the immune system.  If you can’t swing a half-hour nap during the workday, try grabbing a 20-minute siesta on your lunch hour, and another right before dinner. Other healthy tactics, of course, there’s more to boosting your immunity and guarding against illness than getting ample sleep. It’s also important to practice smart stay-healthy strategies such as washing your hands with soap regularly, avoiding close contact with people who are obviously under the weather and talking with your doctor about getting an annual flu shot.  And remember: Even if you do come down with a case of seasonal sniffles, you’ll be able to bounce back faster if your body is well-rested. Sleep experts say there is ample evidence that shows that when people get the sleep they need, they will not only feel better but will also increase their odds of living healthier, more productive lives.

Which among the following statements is NOT true according to the passage.

  1. AOption (a)

The protein that targets infection and inflammation, effectively creating an immune response is increased during sleep.

  2. BOption (b)

A busy workweek doesn't require to make up for the lost sleep.

  3. COption (c)

It's often advisable to get an annual flu shot.

  4. DOption (d)

Skimping on shut-eyes slashes the odds of a productive life.

  5. EOption (e)

Flu vaccines are made less effective by sleep loss.
