Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

EBCA

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is EBCA.

Key Points

  • After going through the sentence we find that:
  • Part D talks about well-planned streets which is not relevant to the context.
  • So, the odd part is D.
  • The sentence should begin with E followed by B which explains what is offshore wind power or offshore wind energy.
  • The next part should be C which mentions the places where the wind farms are constructed.
  • The last part is A which mentions the purpose of the wind power or energy.
  • Thus, only EBCA can make a coherent sentence.

  4. DOption (d)

    D

  5. EOption (e)

    No Error

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

D

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is -years ago, have shed new light on the predators- the error lies in this part only.

Key Points

In the given sentence, the error lies in Part D where the usage ‘have shed’ is inappropriate.

  • The sentence talks about the discovery of two new species of dinosaurs and the scientific names of the same have been mentioned. Further, the non-essential clause(indicated by ‘which’) describes the habitat of these two species.
  • The plural verb ‘have’ does not agree with the subject i.e. ‘the discovery’ (singular noun). The two species mentioned do not form the subject, though it might seem so superficially. As we read the sentence carefully, we infer that the subject is singular (‘discovery’). Therefore, the correct verb to be used is ‘has’.

Thus, the correct sentence is: The discovery of two new species of dinosaurs, namely Ceratosuchops inferodios and Riparovenator milnerae, which likely roamed the south of England 125 million years ago, has shed new light on the predators.

Question 987

SBI Clerk 2021• General English• General English

Direction: Read the following sentence and determine whether there is an error in it. The error, if any, will be in two parts of the sentence. If the sentence is error-free, then select ‘No Error’ as your answer.

  3. COption (c)

    A and D

  4. DOption (d)

    A and B

  5. EOption (e)

    No error

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

A and D

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is A and D- the error lies in these parts only.

Key Points

The parts ‘He resolved being tender with the young' and 'and tolerable of the weak' are grammatically incorrect.

The corrected form of the erroneous parts are:

A: In part A ''He resolved being tender with the young'' is grammatically incorrect. Here the verb 'being' should be replaced with 'to be' to rectify the mistake. Thus, the correct part will be "He resolved to be tender with the young".

D: In part D ''and tolerable of the weak'' is grammatically incorrect. In part D, the adjective tolerable is contextually incorrect and will be replaced by tolerant to make the sentence grammatically correct. Thus, the correct part will be "and tolerant of the weak".

Therefore, option 3) is the correct answer.

Thus, the correct sentence is: He resolved to be tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic to the striving, and tolerant of the weak.

Additional Information

Certain verbs are generally followed by the to-infinitive rather than a prepositional phrase or gerund. This is formed with the word to and the base form of the modifying verb.

The company wants advertising on the radio. [Incorrect]

Question 988

SBI Clerk 2021• General English• General English

Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Some words may be highlighted. Pay attention.

The birds of New Zealand evolved into avifauna that included many endemic species found in no other country. As an island archipelago, New Zealand accumulated bird diversity and when Captain James Cook arrived in the 1770s he noted that the bird song was deafening.

The mix includes species with unusual biology such as the kakapo which is the world's only flightless, nocturnal parrot which also exhibits competitive display breeding using leks.

There are also many species that are similar to neighbouring land areas. A process of colonization, speciation and extinction has been at play over many millions of years, including recent times.

Some species have arrived in human recorded history while others arrived before but are little changed.

The terrestrial birds, wetland birds and seabirds in New Zealand each make up about a third of the total number of species. This is in sharp contrast to the composition of the global bird species where 90% are terrestrial.

When humans first arrived in New Zealand, there were at least 131 species of land, freshwater and coastal birds, and another 65 species of seabirds (gulls, albatrosses, petrels and penguins), making at least 196 native species in total, according to a 1997 report (this count may have risen since as subspecies have been reclassified as species). Of the 131 species that lived on or near land, 93 (or 71%) were endemic, and of the 65 seabirds, 22 (or 34%) were endemic, making 115 (or 59%) endemic species in total.

Due to habitat loss, their historical use as a food source by Māori, and predation by introduced species, many birds have become extinct and numerous more are threatened with extinction. Huge conservation efforts are being made to save the takahē, kakapo, mohua, kokako, hihi and the kiwi. One well saving**(A)** conservation success documented**(B)**, due in a large part to the story(C) of Don Merton, is the efforts(D) of the black robin on the Chatham Islands.

From the time of first human settlement until 1994, 43 (or 46%) of the 93 endemic land, freshwater and coastal bird species have become extinct, as have 4 of the 22 endemic seabird species (making 41% of all endemic species extinct), according to a 1997 report. Fifteen species extinctions have occurred since 1840 (this count will have risen to 16 when the North Island snipe was raised from subspecies to species level). According to the 2005 New Zealand Threat Classification System list, 153 species or subspecies were then threatened with extinction.

According to the passage, which of the following processes is NOT at play over many millions of years, including recent times?

  1. AOption (a)

    Extinction

  2. BOption (b)

    Colonisation

  3. COption (c)

    Indigenisation

  4. DOption (d)

  5. EOption (e)

    None of these

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

Indigenisation

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is ‘Indigenisation’.

Key Points

According to the passage: ‘A process of colonisation, speciation and extinction has been at play over many millions of years, including recent times.‘ But, ‘indigenisation’ is not mentioned in the passage.

Thus, the correct answer is Option 3.

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

B-C-D-A

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is B-C-D-A.

Key Points

  • As we read the jumbled sentence, we can infer that ‘the conservation success’ should be ‘documented’. Thus, the first word in rearrangement is B. Further, the documented conservation success is plausibly a ‘story’. Thus, the second word in rearranged sequence will be C.
  • The success is due to the ‘efforts’. So the third word in rearrangement is D. The remaining word ‘saving’ fits in the context: the ‘saving’ of the black robin. The last word is A.

Thus, the correct answer is Option 3.

Many birds of New Zealand have become extinct and numerous more are threatened with extinction. Which of the following factors are responsible for the threat/extinction as mentioned?

  1. AOption (a)

    Predation by introduced species

  2. BOption (b)

  3. COption (c)

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

Only A

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is only A.

  • It can be easily inferred from the above statement that it talks of a situation when the person is stuck between his two brothers and can’t go against either of them.
  • Here, both the options are unacceptable and equally unpleasant for the person, that’s why it is being said that he is stuck between a rock and a hard place.
  • The person has to take a hard decision as he is facing two equally undesirable alternatives, that’s why option 2 and 3 don’t go with the meaning of the idiom.

Therefore, only A is correct.
