Question 1

Cognitive development is supported by

  1. AOption (a)

conducting relevant and well designed tests as frequently as possible

  2. BOption (b)

presenting activities that reinforce traditional methods

  3. COption (c)

providing a rich and varied evrionment

  4. DOption (d)

focussing more on individual activities in comparison to collaboration

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

providing a rich and varied evrionment

Why this answer is correct

The term ‘development’ refers to qualitative changes in an individual such as a change in personality or other mental and emotional aspects. However, very often growth and development are used interchangeably. The process of development continues even after the individual has attained physical maturity (growth). The individual is continuously changing as he/she interacts with the environment.

Key Points

Cognitive development:- Cognitive development refers to thinking, understanding, and concept formation.

  • It involves cognitive processes such as knowing, thinking, remembering, recognizing, categorizing, imagining, reasoning, decision-making, and so forth.
  • According to Piaget, children’s understanding of the world expands as they experience new ideas and challenges. Children construct their own knowledge through interaction with their surroundings.

Important Points

  • Piaget’s theory of cognitive development is a comprehensive theory about the nature and development of human intelligence.
  • Piaget’s idea is primarily known as a developmental stage theory. The theory deals with the nature of knowledge itself and how humans gradually come to acquire, construct, and use it. To Piaget, cognitive development was a progressive reorganization of mental processes resulting from biological maturation and environmental experience. It provides a rich and varied environment.
  • He believed that children construct an understanding of the world around them, experience discrepancies between what they already know and what they discover in their environment, then adjust their ideas accordingly.
  • Moreover, Piaget claimed that cognitive development is at the centre of the human organism, and language is contingent on knowledge and understanding acquired through cognitive development.
  • Piaget’s earlier work received the greatest attention. Many parents have been encouraged to provide a rich, supportive environment for their child’s natural propensity to grow and learn.

Thus, it is concluded that cognitive development is supported by providing a rich and varied environment.

Question 2

Human development is

  1. AOption (a)

    quantitative

  2. BOption (b)

    qualitative

  3. COption (c)

    unmeasurable to a certain extent

  4. DOption (d)

    both quantitative and qualitative

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

both quantitative and qualitative

Why this answer is correct

Human development refers to the psychosocial, physical, and cognitive development of humans. It extends to the entire lifespan of humans. Physical development of humans involves growth and changes in the brain and the body including sense organs, motor skills, health, etc. Psychosocial development involves changes in personality, social relationships, and emotions. Cognitive development involves changes in memory, language, reasoning, creativity, etc.

Key Points

  • Development in humans is both qualitative and quantitative.
  • Qualitative change occurs when individual progress and become different from the way they were earlier like the way an individual perceives the world, behave and think.
  • Quantitative change occurs when individuals acquire novel information and experiences like, the individuals become stronger, bigger, gain more weight or height.
  • It is concerned with the overall and progressive changes taking place in an individual including both quantitative as well as qualitative aspects.
  • It is a wide and complex process, thus there are some principles that need to be followed for a better understanding.
  • Sudden changes in development are actually the result of both qualitative and quantitative development.

Hence, it can be concluded that human development is both quantitative and qualitative.

Question 3

The nature-nurture debate refers to

  1. AOption (a)

    genetics and environment

  2. BOption (b)

    behaviour and environment

  3. COption (c)

    environment and biology

  4. DOption (d)

    environment and upbringing

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

genetics and environment

Why this answer is correct

The growth and development of an individual is greatly affected by heredity and environment as well as the interaction between heredity and environment. However, there are certain issues and controversies related to this phenomenon.

Key Points

Nature vs. Nurture

  • The nature versus nurture debate is one of the oldest issues in psychology. The debate centres on the relative contributions of genetic inheritance and environmental factors to human development.
  • The term ‘nature’ stands for what comes to children through genetic influences and heredity, i.e. it denotes the influence of factors inherent in the child himself from the time he is conceived.
  • On the other hand, the term ‘nurture’ stands for the influence of the environment on child development, i.e. all the contextual factors that influence who we are, including our perceptions of early childhood, our social relationships and the society around us. It denotes the extrinsic forces, influences and conditions that affect the growth and development of an individual.
  • In other words, the controversy on nature versus nurture concerns whether human behaviour is influenced by the environment or by the genes of an individual.
  • Heredity and environment both play a significant role in the development of children. Any individual trait is the 'result' of both genetics and the environment. Heredity determines the probable biological limits, whereas the environment determines the level up to which the development is possible.

Hence, the nature-nature debate refers to genetics and the environment.

Question 4

Which of the following is a passive agency of socialization?

  1. AOption (a)

    Health club

  2. BOption (b)

    Family

  3. COption (c)

    Eco club

  4. DOption (d)

    Public library

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

Public library

Why this answer is correct

Socialization is the process through which communities transact or educate their members about the norms and values of society to be socially acceptable.

  • Socialization is a process by which an individual becomes a member of society through a mechanism of interaction. Its purpose is to prepare individuals for future roles.
  • Public library is a passive agency of socialization because here we are not interacting directly with someone but we follow the norms and learn how to behave in public.

Hence, it could be concluded that Public library is passive agency of socialization.

Additional Information

There are two main types of socialization:

  • Primary socialization: Takes place early in life. Eg- family.
  • Secondary socialization: Takes place throughout one's life. Eg- peer groups.

Question 5

In Vygotsky’s theory, which aspect of development gets neglected ?

  1. AOption (a)

    Social

  2. BOption (b)

    Cultural

  3. COption (c)

    Biological

  4. DOption (d)

    Linguistic

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

Biological

Why this answer is correct

Lev Vygotsky', a Soviet psychologist, has propounded the "Socio-cultural Theory". This theory implies the idea that social interaction plays a crucial role in the development of a learner's cognitive ability.

  • According to Vygotsky, social interaction is the primary cause of cognitive development as his theory emphasizes that children learn through interaction and collaboration with skilled and knowledgeable people.
  • In fact, as per Vygotsky’s sociocultural perspective, interaction with adults and abler peers is influence language development.
  • He believed that children gain knowledge through social and cultural experiences. When the child is having interactions with peers and adults, they learn the values, beliefs, customs and language of their culture. As per his sociocultural theory, development takes place due to the intermingling of culture, social interaction (which has three components explained below), and language.

Key Points

Language:

  • Vygotsky believed that since language differs across cultures and communities, thinking/ Cognitive Development cognition also differs.
  • Language is not only needed for interaction with others, it is an important aspect of the development of mental processes in the socio-cultural milieu.
  • With children from diverse linguistic backgrounds in a class, it becomes important for a teacher to understand ways in which children gradually transit to the second language

Socio-cultural

  • Culture is the main determinant of cognitive development and learning. It plays a significant role in human intellectual development and how humans perceive the world.
  • Vygotsky believes that social and cultural (language, customs, and practices, family, work, etc.) processes are important in the process of development. They say that children continuously learn in everyday engagements with peers and adults. And thinking and knowledge developed in this process of learning. This view of development is known as a socio-cultural perspective or social constructivism.

Thus from the above-mentioned points, it is clear that in Vygotsky's theory biological aspect of development gets neglected.

Question 6

Which of the following stages are involved when infants “THINK” with their eyes, ears and hands ?

  1. AOption (a)

    Concrete operational stage

  2. BOption (b)

    Pre-operational stage

  3. COption (c)

    Sensory motor stage

  4. DOption (d)

    Formal operational stag

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

Sensory motor stage

Why this answer is correct

Jean Piaget, a Swiss psychologist proposed widely known perspectives about cognitive development in the stages from birth through the end of adolescence. Jean Piaget's theory focuses on the mental development of a child that moves through four different stages of intellectual development. In Piaget's view, early cognitive development involves processes based upon actions and later progresses to changes in mental operations.

Key PointsPiaget’s Four Stages of Cognitive Development:

Stages of DevelopmentCharacteristics
Sensorimotor (birth to 2 yr)- Experiences the world through senses and actions (looking, hearing, touching, mouthing, and grasping) - Cognitive development begins with the baby's use of senses and movements - Develops object permanence
Pre-Operational (2-7 yr)- Learns to use language to represent objects by images and words - Classifies objects by a single feature. - Thinking is ego-centric; has difficulty taking in the point of view of others. - Develops symbolic thought
Concrete-Operational (7-11 yr)- Thinking logically about concrete events, performing concrete arithmetic operations - Achieves conservation of number (age-6), mass (age-7), and weight (age-9) - Develops operational thought
Formal Operational (11 yr and above)- Potential for more mature moral reasoning - Becomes concerned with hypothetical, future, and ideological problems - Develops abstract concepts

Hence, it can be concluded that the Sensory Motor stage is associated with when infants "think" with their eyes, ear, and hands.

Question 7

Ria does not agree with Rishabh about setting up a class picnic. She thinks that the rules can be revised to suit the majority. This kind of peer disagreement, according to Piaget, refers to

  1. AOption (a)

    Heteronomous morality

  2. BOption (b)

    Cognitive immaturity

  3. COption (c)

    Reaction

  4. DOption (d)

    Morality of cooperation

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

Morality of cooperation

Why this answer is correct

Together with the development of cognition and social skills, children develop along the dimension of moral values and reasoning. They learn the rules for right and wrong and understand other laws and rules. This is called moral development.

Important Points

Piaget’s Ideas about Moral Development:-

Stage of autonomous morality or morality of cooperation:-

  • A new stage is achieved around the age of 10. As children become less egocentric by age 9 or 10, they are also able to realize that rules are not fixed but arbitrary.
  • They come to know that rules can change and it is possible to make personal decisions about obeying rules.
  • The moral authority of adults is replaced in part by a morality based on cooperation and mutual understanding.
  • At this stage, it is not wrong to break the rules; rather, the motives, the rules, the specific situations are all considered in making a judgment. They feel praise and punishment should be distributed in a non-arbitrary, evenhanded way.
  • It is hard for children at this stage to understand that the same behaviour might evoke different responses from different people.

According to the given statement,' Ria does not agree with Rishabh about setting up a class picnic. She thinks that the rules can be revised to suit the majority. This kind of peer disagreement, according to Piaget, refers to the Morality of cooperation.

Hint

  • Heteronomous morality:- In Piaget’s views, the child enters a new stage of moral development when he enters the stage of concrete operations at age 6 or 7. He called it heteronomous morality or moral realism (heteronomous means under an outside authority). In this stage, rules are regarded as unchangeable, absolute, and imposed by an external authority.

Question 8

Which one of the following is a form of Sternberg’s Triarchic Theory of Intelligence ?

  1. AOption (a)

    Practical Intelligence

  2. BOption (b)

    Experimental Intelligence

  3. COption (c)

    Resourceful Intelligence

  4. DOption (d)

    Mathematical Intelligence

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

Practical Intelligence

Why this answer is correct

The Triarchic Theory of Intelligence is proposed by 'Robert Sternberg', an American psychologist. He is known for his research and work which are always based on human intelligence and creativity.

This theory advocates that intelligent behaviour takes place from a balance among three aspects of intelligence which are contextual, experiential, and componential intelligence. These three distinct types of intelligence are also known as practical, creative, and analytical intelligence.

  • Practical intelligence: Practical intelligence is related to the contextual sub theory. Practically intelligent people are especially adept at behaving in successful ways in their external environment.
  • Creative intelligence: The experiential sub theory is related to creative intelligence, which is one’s ability to use existing knowledge to create new ways to handle new problems or cope in new situations.
  • Analytical intelligence: The componential sub theory is related to analytical intelligence, which is essentially academic intelligence. Analytical intelligence is used to solve problems.

Important Points

The Triarchic Theory is comprised of three sub-theories, each of which relates to a specific kind of intelligence:

  • the contextual sub theory, which corresponds to practical intelligence, or the ability to successfully function in one’s environment.
  • the experiential sub theory, which corresponds to creative intelligence, or the ability to deal with novel situations or issues.
  • the componential sub theory, which corresponds to analytical intelligence, or the ability to solve problems.

Hence, one of the forms of Sternberg’s Triarchic Theory of Intelligence is Practical Intelligence.

Question 9

Who developed the first intelligence test ?

  1. AOption (a)

    David Wechsler

  2. BOption (b)

    Alfred Binet

  3. COption (c)

    Charles Edward Spearman

  4. DOption (d)

    Robert Sternberg

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

Alfred Binet

Why this answer is correct

An Intelligence Test is an assessment that measures the range of intellectual, memory, speed, attention, reasoning abilities, and cognitive abilities. Generally, Intelligence tests are designed specifically to assess human intelligence through the performance of various tasks.  Intelligence Quotient is the measure of a child's ability to reason and solve problems. IQ is correlated either directly or indirectly with problem-solving and educational performance.

Intelligence Quotient (IQ) can be obtained by the equation (MA/CA) * 100 = IQ, where MA is mental age and CA is chronological age.

  • Mental Age is the measure of the intellectual level at which an individual functions; for example, someone described as having a mental age of 8 years would be functioning at the level of an average 8 years old.
  • Chronological Age is the number of years a person has been alive

IQ Rating Scale:

IQ RANGEIQ CLASSIFICATION
130 and aboveVery Superior
120-129Superior
110-119High Average
90-109Average
80-89Low Average
70-79Border Line
69 and belowExtremely Low
  • Intelligence tests are generally used to improve children's learning and abilities.
  • There are different types of Intelligence tests like the Binet Intelligence Test, Wechsler Intelligence test, etc for children's assistance.

Key Points The first modern intelligence test was developed in 1904, by Alfred Binet (1857-1911). He was one of the most influential psychologists in history. He designed series of questions with the objectives to distinguish children who may have learning disabilities and mental retardation. His test was based on assumption that intelligence developed with age. Binet concentrated on mental abilities such as attention and memory, it may be used to identify children who needed additional academic assistance. Binet worked with his research assistance 'Simon' and introduced intelligence test , known as Binet-Simon Intelligence scale. The test consists of 30 different questions or tasks and the goal of the task was to assign a child a mental age based upon the average performance of children at each age.

Hence, the first intelligence test was developed by Alfred Binet.

Additional Information

  • The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) is an IQ test designed to measure intelligence and cognitive ability in adults and older adolescents. The original WAIS (Form I) was published in February 1955 by David Wechsler, as a revision of the Wechsler–Bellevue Intelligence Scale, released in 1939. The WAIS Test has the following test items they are Vocabulary, Information, Arithmetic, Comprehension, Similarities and Digit Span.
  • Charles Spearman (1863-1945), an English psychologist and the originator of factor analysis was the first to claim that intelligence consists of general ‘g’ factor and specific ‘s’ factors. His theory is known as ‘Two Factor Theory’(1904). He did not give the intelligence test.
  • Sternberg (1988) formulated the ‘Triarchic theory of intelligence’ which theorizes that there are three types of intelligence such as:
  • Componential or analytical intelligence
  • Experiential or creative intelligence
  • Contextual or practical intelligence

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

May lead to diminished effort or performance of the students

Why this answer is correct

Gender Discrimination: It is unequal, unfair, and differential treatment or the situation in which individuals are treated differently because of their gender. Discrimination affects many aspects of the person. Education Discrimination can be on basis of age, disability, gender, caste, race, religion, etc.

Key Points

The teacher plays an important role in the classroom to prevent gender discrimination or bias in the classroom.

  • A teacher must take the same and equal effort for both, considering that girls and boys are equally capable of doing all things.
  • If a gender-neutral environment is not created, then it may affect the learning process of students to perform as per their abilities.
  • Gender Discrimination sets limits on child's potential and has a significant impact on their learning, mental and physical health as well.
  • If children experience discrimination more likely to have negative attitudes and lower academic performance.
  • Same treatment to all in the classroom irrespective of all differences to create a positive learning environment.

Hence, Gender Discrimination in a classroom may lead to diminished effort or performance of students.

Question 12

Which one of the following is an example of learning style ?

  1. AOption (a)

    Visual

  2. BOption (b)

    Accrual

  3. COption (c)

    Factual

  4. DOption (d)

    Tactual

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

Visual

Why this answer is correct

Learning is not something that takes place within the boundaries of a classroom; rather it takes place anywhere, anytime, and from anyone. Traditional Indian Literature has examples where people learned from trees, mountains, rivers,   insects, etc. It means learning is something that is possible anywhere.

'Learning styles' represent those characteristics that determine and characterize a person's preferred approach to learning and its use in problem-solving. Different learners display different preferences in terms of their learning styles. Learning styles are relatively more stable, though the same learner may resort to the use of a different learning style in a particular situation. Learning styles are thus relatively well-established response patterns in individuals compounded by one's learning and problem-solving processes.

Key Points

  • The term ‘learning styles correspond to the understanding that every individual learns differently. Learning styles define the way how people learn and how they approach information.
  • It is a pattern of behavior that human beings use for new learning. You may recall that sometimes you feel like you cannot learn something important even if you use the same method which has been suggested by your parents, colleagues, or teachers. But, then you tried to learn that in your own way and succeeded.
  • It indicates that you may have a different learning style. An individual’s learning style refers to the preferential way in which the learner absorbs processes, comprehends, and retains information. Different learners learn in a variety of ways, by seeing and hearing, working alone and in groups, reasoning logically and intuitively, and sometimes by memorizing or visualizing. Thus, since, everyone is different, it is important for teachers to understand the differences in learners’ learning styles, so that they can implement best practice strategies into their daily activities, curriculum and assessments.

Important Points

Examples of learning style:-

  • Visual learners:- Visual learners prefer the use of images, maps, and graphic organizers to access and understand new information. The visual learning style often referred to as the spatial learning style, is a way of learning in which information is associated with images. This learning style requires that learners first see what they are expected to know. People with a visual learning style are often referred to as visual-spatial learners.
  • This learning style often comes easy to the visual learner because visual learners tend to spend so much time seeing things, they often need to make the material stand out more and the information does not get lost in the mind. It stays forever so it is an effective learning style.

Hint

  • Auditory learners:- They best understand new content through listening and speaking in situations such as lectures and group discussions.
  • Learners with a strong reading/writing preference learn best through words. These learners are able to translate abstract concepts into words and essays.
  • Kinesthetic learners:- They best understand information through the tactile representation of information. They learn best by figuring things out by hand.

Thus, it is concluded that Visual is an example of a learning style.

Question 13

A teacher collects and reads the work of the class, then plans and adjusts the next lesson to meet student needs. He/She is doing

  1. AOption (a)

    Assessment of learning

  2. BOption (b)

    Assessment as learning

  3. COption (c)

    Assessment for learning

  4. DOption (d)

    Assessment at learning

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

Assessment for learning

Why this answer is correct

Assessment is educational evaluation, the systematic way of collecting information and reading the work of class which is used to guide and improve student's performance in terms of learning and development. There are several methods that teachers use to evaluate the learning progress and skills of students or the need for any academic assistance. It actually determines whether or not the goals of education are met.

Key Points

Summative Assessment (Assessment of Learning):

  • It is also known as Assessment OF Learning is to evaluate student learning by comparing it against some standard or level.
  • The main objective is to rank, grade, classify and compare students periodically that indicate their level of performance.
  • It is considered a Formal method of Assessment as it is conducted at a specific time.
  • Example: Mid-term Exams, unit tests, final projects, semester exams, etc.

Formative Assessment (Assessment for Learning) :

  • It is also known as Assessment for Learning, used to evaluate student learning progress and achievement.
  • The goal is to collect detailed information like strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, skills, etc., and then plan the next lesson in a way to improve the performance of the students.
  • It helps teachers to identify problem-facing areas, to understand and learning needs for achieving academic growth.
  • It is considered an Informal Method of assessment as it can be conducted at any time or during teaching also.
  • Example: Discussions, Class tests, homework, assignments, debate, plays, etc.

Assessment as Learning

  • When learners are asked to assess their performance on their own, they use various assessment techniques and strategies to assess themselves.
  • This practice helps learners to identify their knowledge gaps, adopt appropriate learning strategy and use assessment as a tool for new learning.
  • It encourages students to take responsibility for their own learning.
  • It requires students to ask questions about their learning.
  • It involves teachers and students creating learning goals to encourage growth and development.
  • It provides ways for students to use formal and informal feedback and self-assessment to help them understand the next steps in learning.
  • It encourages peer assessment, self-assessment, and reflection

So, If a teacher collects and reads the work of the class, then plans and adjusts the next lesson to meet student needs. He/She is doing Assessment for Learning (Formative Assessment).

feel a sense of ownership for the system.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

observe students minutely on a daily basis to assess their values and attitudes.

Why this answer is correct

Assessment is the second step of evaluating a student’s performance. It makes student’s performance more meaningful. Unless we interpret, analyze, rank-order, and compare one’s individual score with the average score of the group, we cannot find out one’s relative position in a group.

  • Assessment plays a significant role in the teaching-learning process.
  • Assessment of learning helps a teacher to design his/her teaching in a better way and to know the attainment level of learners in the subject content.

Key Points

  • SBA, or School-Based Assessment, is a comprehensive review of cognitive (intellectual), affective (emotional and spiritual), and psychomotor elements of a student (physical).
  • SBA is a major component of the teaching and learning process.
  • SBA is also exercised in all subjects in primary and secondary schools aimed at strengthening the quality system assessment and evaluation of the existing education.
  • Among the goals of SBA is to get an overview of the performance of a student in learning, assess the activities carried out during the teaching and learning processes, continuous information about teaching and learning as well plan and repairing of teaching and learning.
  • It observes students minutely on a daily basis to assess their values and attitudes and improves students' understanding as well as improve academic and non-academic development.

Thus, it is concluded that teachers who work under School-Based Assessment observe students minutely on a daily basis to assess their values and attitudes.

Dyslexia

Why this answer is correct

Learning disabilities are disorders that affect brain functioning of understanding, reading, writing, spelling, reasoning or recalling ability. Learning disabilities can also cause problems in learning skills, language skills, mathematical operations, and coordinating movements. Learning disabilities are continual and can cause continual life-long challenges. Children with learning abilities often have average or above-average intelligence. Learning Disabilities are not contagious. Learning Disabilities are due to genetic or neurobiological factors which affect cognitive processes related to learning. Learning Disabilities can run in those whose paternal relatives have such problems (genetic), but environmental factors can also play an important role

Key Points

Difficulty in recalling sequence of letters in words and frequent loss of visual memory is associated with, language-based disability, "Dyslexia". Dyslexia is the most common learning disability.  Dyslexia is a language-based disability in which a person faces problems in understanding written words. It is also referred to as a reading disorder.

A child suffering from Dyslexia may find it difficult to distinguish between words, 'nest' and 'best' , 'glow' and 'slow'.

 Important Points

Common Learning Disabilities:

  • Dysgraphia: Dysgraphia is a writing disability in which a person finds it hard to form letters or write within a defined space. It affects a person's handwriting ability. A person with Dysgraphia may exhibit difficulty with letter spacing, trouble thinking, and writing simultaneously.

Why this answer is correct

Divergent thinking is the process of creating multiple ideas, unique possible solutions, or ideas of a problem in a short period of time. Fluency, elaboration, originality, and flexibility are the dimensions of Divergent thinking and are associated with giftedness. Divergent thinking is important in the creative thinking process.

 Key Points

Guilford (1986) considered creative thinking as involving divergent thinking, which consists of four elements such as fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration.

Let's Understand in Brief:

Flow/Fluency- Fluency is a component of creativity that signifies the smooth flow or vibration of substance or emotion that resonates with a unique symbol or norm.
Flexibility- It refers to the ability to produce a large variety of ideas such as thinking of varied uses of a particular object, - For example, list the different ways of using a rope or a newspaper.
Originality- The number of statistically infrequent ideas; shows an ability to produce uncommon or unique responses. - It is the ability to produce ideas that are unusual, statistically infrequent, and not obvious.
Elaboration- The number of added ideas; demonstrates the subject’s ability to develop and elaborate ideas. - For example, what would happen if no sleep is required?

    Achievement test

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

Diagnostic test

Why this answer is correct

Learning disabilities are disorders that affect brain functioning of understanding, reading, writing, spelling, reasoning or recalling ability. Learning disabilities can also cause problems in learning skills, language skills, mathematical operations and coordinating movements. Learning disabilities are continual and can cause continual life-long challenges. Children with learning abilities often have average or above-average intelligence.

Key Points Diagnostic Test provides feedback on student's weaknesses and strengths in mathematics. This test may help teachers to find learning difficulties by identifying the ability, strengths, skills, and weaknesses of the students.

Steps of Diagnostic Testing:

  • Identify students who are facing problems or need any academic assistance.
  • Locating learning gaps and difficulties.
  • Discovering causal factors of slow learning.
  • Plan for specific efforts to overcome their problems and difficulties. Eg: Remedial Teaching.

Diagnostic Assessment is used to identify areas of improvement for students and helps to guide them by knowing the gaps in their understanding. This test helps to recognize the issues that students have with the subject and helps to give proper instructions and feedback for better subject-related growth.

Learning Disabilities in mathematics can be assessed most appropriately by Diagnostic Test because it helps to know the difficulty in children's understanding.

Additional Information Aptitude test

  • Aptitude tests are used for predicting success in future learning activities or occupations.
  • Aptitude means the special ability or capacity besides the general intellectual ability which helps an individual to acquire a required degree of proficiency in a specific field.
  • The aptitude tests are likely to test how an individual will perform in a specific area without proper guidance or training.
  • These tests can be used to test the sensory and motor capabilities, aptitude in teaching, music, science, painting, mathematics, etc.
  • These types of tests properly anticipate the future potentialities or capacities of an individual which helps us to select the best individual for a specialized activity.

Achievement tests are administered on students to measure their learning outcomes. These tests are more prevalent in our schools. These tests show as to what has been learned by the students, rather than to predict future performance.

Question 23

According to the theory of social learning of Albert Bandura, which one of the following is true ?

  1. AOption (a)

Play is essential and should be given priority in school.

  2. BOption (b)

Modelling is a principal way for children to learn.

  3. COption (c)

An unresolved crisis can harm a child.

  4. DOption (d)

Cognitive development is independent of social development.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

Modelling is a principal way for children to learn.

Why this answer is correct

Bandura’s Social Learning Theory of Personality is based on the premise that human behaviour is largely acquired and that the principles of learning are sufficient to account for the development and maintenance of behaviour. Bandura has done a great deal of work on social learning throughout his career and is famous for his “Social Learning Theory” which he has recently renamed, “Social Cognitive Theory”.

Key Points

  • Bandura says that the environment also reinforces modelling, whereas contemporary learning theory proposes that both reinforcement and punishment have an indirect effect on learning.
  • People are more likely to follow the behaviours modelled by someone with whom they can identify. The more perceived commonalities and/or emotional attachments between the observer and the model, the more likely the observer will learn from the model. This term is known as Modelling.
  • Social Modeling can be explained as when the person witnessing other people successfully completing a task is another important source of self-efficacy. According to Bandura, when a person sees another person or persons similar to oneself succeeding by one’s sustained efforts, makes the person raise the belief that they too possess the capabilities that could help them master comparable activities and succeed.
  • Modelling is a principal way for children to learn. Albert Bandura's goal was to explain how toddlers learn in social situations by observing and then mimicking other people's behaviour. In essence, it was considered that learning could not be entirely explained by reinforcement alone and that the presence of others played a role as well. He noted that the repercussions of observed conduct were frequently used to determine whether or not children were adopted.

Thus from the above-mentioned points, it is clear that according to the theory of social learning of Albert Bandura, modelling is a principal way for children to learn.

Additional Information

According to Erikson:

  • He developed the theory of psychosocial development which states that the personality of a child evolves through various stages.
  • And an unresolved; crisis can harm a child as it will affect the development of his personality which will not come as expected.

Question 24

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

reasoning from general to particular

Why this answer is correct

Deductive reasoning is a logical process that act of coming to conclusion based on one or more information.

 Key Points

  • It is also known as top-down thinking because it usually starts with general conclusion and ends with a specific conclusion.
  • In a deductive argument, if all the premises are true , and the terms correctly applied , then it state that conclusion will also be true.
  • For Example, If A=B and B=C, then deductive reasoning tells us that A=C.

Important PointsDeductive Reasoning works from more general to particular or specific. But, Inductive Reasoning move from particular observations to general theories.

Hence, Deductive Reasoning involves reasoning from general to particular.

Question 25

When children learn a concept and use it, practice helps in reducing the errors committed by them. This idea was given by

  1. AOption (a)

    E. L. Thorndike

  2. BOption (b)

    Jean Piaget

  3. COption (c)

    J. B. Watson

  4. DOption (d)

    Lev Vygotsky

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

E. L. Thorndike

Why this answer is correct

E.L Thorndike (1874 - 1949), American Psychologist was the exponent of the theory of connectionism or trial and error theory.

 Key Points

  • Thorndike's study on animal behavior and the learning process of cats founded trial and error theory or theory of connectionism.
  • He stated that connections are formed in the nervous system between stimuli and response, illustrated by the symbols S-R. It is meant that Learning is the product between stimulus and response. "Bond" is also used to describe these connections, so this theory is sometimes called as "Bond Theory of Learning".
  • According to the theory, when no solution to the problem is available, then the learner adopts the method of trial and error. He first tries a solution, if it does not help him, he rejects it and switches to another solution of the problem. This process helps to reduce error and in the end, discovers the correct solution.
  • Connection is established by following these three laws.
  • Law of Readiness: Readiness means preparation for action. It stated that learning occurs when an action tendency is present. If one is not ready to learn, learning can not be processed further.
  • Law of Exercise: This law stated that drill or practice helps in increasing efficiency or connection are strengthened with trial or practice. For example; learning to type, learning to drive needs repetition of several actions.
  • Law of Effect: This law suggested that when satisfaction follows an association, it is more likely to be repeated.

Thorndike also proposed five secondary laws for the learning process. These are as follows:

  • Law of Multiple Responses: means a change in response till appropriate behavior is known.
  • Law of Attitude or Set: means learner performs the task well if he has attitude set in the task.
  • Law of Response by Analogy: means utilizing previous experiences in new situations.
  • Pre- Potency of elements: means learner reacts only to essential situation and neglect other irrelevant features.
  • Law of Associative Shifting: means learner may get a response, of which a learner is capable.

Hence, it can be concluded that when children learn a concept and use it, practice helps in reducing the errors committed by them, this idea was given by E.L Thorndike.

Additional Information According to Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory:

  • Cognitive development takes place at different rates at different stages of development.
  • Cognition develops through the interaction between the child and the environment.
  • Piaget’s theory focuses not only on understanding how children acquire knowledge but also on understanding the nature of the child’s intelligence.

J.B Watson's learning theory

  • It explained that behaviour can be explained in terms of S-R connection in the brain. It is because the contiguity of the brain was enough to establish a connection between stimulus and response.
  • Watson conducted an experiment on his eleven-year-old son. Watson presented him a white rat. His son Albert started loving that white rat. After this, Watson produced a loud sound at the time of his playing with a white rat. After this process, the child started fearing this white rat. In this way, the response of fear got conditioned along with the white rat.

Question 27

The inner force that stimulates and compels a behavioural response and provides specific direction to that response is

  1. AOption (a)

    Motive

  2. BOption (b)

    Perseverance

  3. COption (c)

    Emotion

  4. DOption (d)

    Commitment

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

Motive

Why this answer is correct

The intentions, desires, goals, and needs determine human and animal behaviour. An inquiry is made into a person’s motives in order to explain that person’s actions.

Important Points

  • Motives are a hypothetical state that activates behaviour and propels one towards goals.
  • The meaning of motive is the reason for doing something or behaving in a specific way.
  • This is a inner force that stimulates and compels a behavioural response and provides a specific direction to that response
  • The motives are responsible for propelling our action tendencies towards a desired state or goal.
  • Motives are not visible directly, rather they are inferred from our behaviours. For example, if we observe a student working hard day and night on her/his task, we infer that she/he is motivated to score high.
  • The motives help us to make choices which also in a way help us to make predictions about behaviour. For example, if two friends always come together for a class, we predict that they are good friends, or if one is absent from the class, we may predict the other one will also be absent.

Additional Information

Motives are generally classified as primary and secondary motives.

  • The primary motives are unlearned and physiologically based, such as hunger, thirst, sleep, avoidance of pain, sex, and maternal concern.
  • Secondary motives are learned motives. The needs for power, achievement, affiliation, security, and status are major motivating forces in the behaviour of organizational participants.

Thus from the above-mentioned points, it is clear that the inner force that stimulates and compels a behavioural response and provides specific direction to that response is motive.

Hint

  • Perseverance:-  It is a continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties.
  • Emotion:- It is a strong feeling such as anger, love, etc.
  • Commitment:- It is a responsibility or a promise to do something.

Question 28

Which term is often used interchangeably with the term “motivation” ?

  1. AOption (a)

    Incentive

  2. BOption (b)

    Emotion

  3. COption (c)

    Need

  4. DOption (d)

    Inspiration

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

Need

Why this answer is correct

Motivation is the need within the individual to do something or to fulfill your desire. There are certain internal and external factors that are responsible for stimulating a desire and providing us with the energy to pursue our goals, needs, and desires.

Key Points

  • Motivation involves three aspects that need to be understood.
  • First, it talks about a need state in the organism that drives him/her towards the satisfaction of the bodily need. This need could be due to internal thoughts and feelings or could be due to external factors in the environment.
  • Secondly, this need then induces a state of arousal or an action tendency.
  • Thirdly, the action is directed towards attaining some goal.

Important Points

The four terms that are related to motivation are needs, drives, incentives, and motives.

  • Need is often used interchangeably with the term “motivation".
  • A need is something that is necessary for organisms to live a healthy life. Needs are distinguished from wants because a deficiency would cause a clear negative outcome, such as dysfunction or death. Needs can be objective and physical, such as food and water, or they can be subjective and psychological, such as the need for self-esteem.
  • Needs are a kind of natural mental programming that makes us want things. They essentially motivate us into action as a stimulated need leads to the inner tension that drives us into action.
  • These are related to the biological states of cellular or bodily deficiencies that lead to drives. For example, individuals need water, food, and oxygen to survive.
  • Needs are created or come into existence whenever there is a physiological or psychological imbalance. A need exists when cells in the body are experiencing a shortage of food or water.

Hint

  • Incentives: This is external or is from the environment (as opposed to drive that is internal) and plays a role in motivating behaviors. It could be an object or an event. For instance, a trophy won in a game can be termed as an incentive to do well in that game.
  • Inspiration:- A force or influence that inspires someone. Inspiration awakens us to new possibilities by allowing us to transcend our ordinary experiences and limitations.
  • Emotion:- It is a feeling to show our anger, love, fear, etc.

Hence, we can conclude that need is often used interchangeably with the term “motivation".

Affective

Why this answer is correct

The intentions, desires, goals, and needs determine human and animal behavior. An inquiry is made into a person’s motives in order to explain that person’s actions.

  • An internal or external force consisting of needs drives and wants that impels people towards certain goals in life
  • Motives are a hypothetical state that activates behavior and propels one towards goals.
  • The meaning of motive is the reason for doing something or behaving in a specific way. Different roles have been assigned to motivational factors in the causation of behavior.

Important Points

  • Affective motives deal with the need to reach satisfying feeling states and to obtain personal goals as affective motive is related to emotion.
  • McGuire’s 16 motives are organized into four categories- cognitive preservation motives, cognitive growth motives, affective preservation motives, and affective growth motives.
  • The cognitive motives focus on the individual's need for being adaptively oriented towards their environment and achieving a sense of meaning. Whereas affective motives relate to the need to reach satisfying states and to attain personal goals.

Thus, it is concluded that Option 2 is correct.

Additional Information

  • William James McGuire is considered by some to be the “father of cognition”. For many decades he was the premier researcher in the field of psychology and persuasion.
  • McGuire developed a motive classification system that is more specific than Maslow’s.
  • McGuire’s system consists of 16 different motives – these help marketers to isolate motives likely to be involved in various consumption situations.

Question 30

Which one of the following is a factor that affects learning positively ?

    Meaningful association

  4. DOption (d)

    Pressure from parents

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

Meaningful association

Why this answer is correct

Learning is the process by which skills, attitudes, knowledge, and concepts are acquired, understood, applied, and extended. All human beings, whether grown-ups or children engage in the process of learning, either consciously, subconsciously. It is important to understand that while we learn some ideas and concepts through instruction or teaching, we also learn through our feelings and experiences. Feelings and experiences are a tangible part of our lives and these greatly influence what we learn, how we learn, and why we learn.

Key Points

Learning is influenced by both personal and environmental factors. Learner-related factors are personal factors that differ from person to person and learner to learner. Following are the factors that affect learning:-

  • Maturation
  • Motivation
  • Psychological needs
  • Self-concept
  • Level of aspiration
  • Goals
  • Interests
  • Study and work habits

Important Points

The meaningful association is a factor that affects learning positively.

Meaningful association:- The more meaningful something to you, the easier for you to remember. The less meaningful, the more difficult for you to remember. By making the information more meaningful it becomes easier to remember. There are many ways to make the information meaningful.

  • The information can become meaningful by associating it with the information that you already know.
  • For example:- You can use association to help you remember people's names. When you are introduced to someone, associate them with the other person who has the same name.

Hence, the meaningful association is a factor that affects learning positively.

Hint

  • Fear of failure, competition with peers, and pressure from parents are the negative factors that affect learning negatively.

Additional Information

  • Learning has been considered partly a cognitive process and partly a social and affective one. It qualifies as a cognitive process because it involves the functions of attention, perception, reasoning, analysis, drawing of conclusions, making interpretations, and giving meaning to the observed phenomena. All of these are mental processes that relate to the intellectual functions of the individual.
  • Learning is a social and affective process, as the societal and cultural context in which we function and the feelings and experiences which we have, greatly influence our ideas, concepts, images, and understanding of the world.

narrow aim of teaching mathematics

Why this answer is correct

NCF 2005 is one of the three national curriculum frameworks In India published by NCERT. It provides a guideline to teachers and schools to choose learning experiences to give children. The main aim of teaching mathematics as per NCF 2005 is to develop the mathematization ability of students.

According to NCF 2005, the objective of teaching mathematics is:-

  • Learn the concepts of mathematics from different branches of mathematics, which are algebra, trigonometry, geometry, etc.
  • Use proper mathematical concepts to solve problems.
  • Use different types of mathematical representation like diagrams, formulae, chart tables, etc.

Key PointsThere are two types of aims of teaching mathematics which are higher aim and narrow aim.

Narrow aim of teaching mathematics:-

  • To develop numeracy related skills
  • To develop useful proficiency in number, number operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and measurement, decimal, etc.
  • To develop generalization ability.

Higher aim of teaching mathematics:-

  • To appreciate the usefulness, power, and beauty of mathematics.
  • To develop problem-solving skills
  • To develop visualization, representation, and optimization skills
  • To develop mathematical communication.

Hence, the teaching of numbers and operations at the primary level caters to the narrow aim of education.

  1. AOption (a)

    Skill of addition

  2. BOption (b)

    Concept of place value

  3. COption (c)

    Skill of addition by regrouping

  4. DOption (d)

Concept of order property of addtion

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

Concept of place value

Why this answer is correct

The addition is the term used to describe adding two or more numbers together. The plus sign '+' is used to denote an addition. The addition is one of the four basic operations of arithmetic which are subtraction, multiplication, and division. Regrouping is a method of addition from which we can add two or more numbers.

Important Points

 Here, the students responded to the question as        4562+728     11842‾\underline{\dfrac{\begin{matrix}\ \ \ \ \ \ \ 4562 \\ +728\end{matrix}}{\ \ \ \ \ 11842}}so he is having a misconception about place-value in the process of addition.

  • He is not using the digit at the appropriate place, so he has done the wrong addition.
  • Here the child has a misconception about the unit digit when the digits are different for two numbers addition.
  • The teacher should try to clear the conceptual understanding of students regarding the place value and face value of numbers.
  • For example,        4562+0728     4280‾\underline{\dfrac{\begin{matrix}\ \ \ \ \ \ \ 4562 \\ + 0728\end{matrix}}{\ \ \ \ \ 4280}}

Hence, the response reflects that the child lacks the concept of place value.

Additional Information

  • The skill of addition:- skill of addition is adding two or more numbers together.
  • Concept of order property by addition:- Order property of addition refers to two sets of addition in which numbers interchanged then the answer will remain the same. 5+2=2+5

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

Visualization stage

Why this answer is correct

Van Hiele's model is a theory that describes how students learn geometry. He explained 5 levels of geometric thinking. Students pass through the levels step by step. each level has its own linguistic symbols and network of relationships.

There are 5 levels in which van Hiele described how children learn to reason in geometry.

Level 0: Visualization-

  • At this level, the child focuses on individual shapes of geometry.
  • The child will simply learn to distinguish between shapes without any description.
  • Children view figures without analyzing their properties.
  • Students may not be able to recognize the figure if it is rotated.

Level 1: Analysis-

  • Students learn and identify parts of figures and see figures in a class of shapes.
  • They can describe a shape's properties and understand that shapes in a group have the same properties.

Level 2: Informal deduction/ Abstraction-

  • The student starts to recognize the relationship between the properties of shape.

Level 3: Formal deduction:-

  • Students able to understand more complex geometrical concepts
  • They can think of interrelated properties, and relations between axioms, theorems, postulates, and definitions.
  • They can understand abstract statements and make conclusions more in logic than intuition.

Level 4: Rigor

  • This is the last level of learning geometrical reasoning.
  • They can compare geometrical results in different axiomatic systems even in absence of concrete examples.
  • This is college mathematics level.

Hence, children who can are able to classify shapes based on their appearance are in the visualization stage.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

Compensating

Why this answer is correct

Addition of sum of two or more numbers. the addition has the following strategies:-

  • counting on
  • compensating
  • regrouping

Important PointsCompensating:- compensating is a way of adding by taking such numbers in addition that we find easier. we round a number to make it easier to solve a sum. For example-  if we want to add 37 and 19, 37+19, then first we add 1 in 19 so, 37+20 becomes **57, now we will subtract 1 from 57, so the **answer will be 56.

Hence, compensating is the correct answer.

Additional InformationDirect modeling:-

  • Direct modeling is when students show exactly what is happening in the problem by using pictures. It is a powerful strategy that provides a foundation for more advanced strategies that follow.
  • eg- if there are 8 bags of cookies with the same amount of cookies in each bag. if there are 48 cookies then how many cookies are in each bag? Direct modeling increases problem-solving skills.

Regrouping:-

  • Regrouping can be defined as the process of making groups of tens when carrying out addition and subtraction with two-digit numbers or larger. It is rearranging groups in place value to carry out an operation.

Incrementing:-

  • The increment is a small, unspecified, nonzero change in the value of a quantity. Increment describes regular, measurable movements that are usually small.

    Environmental Skills

  2. BOption (b)

    Environmental Science

  3. COption (c)

    Environmental Sources

  4. DOption (d)

    Environmental Studies

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

Environmental Studies

Why this answer is correct

Environmental studies or EVS is the study of the environment in the context of earth and living things. It is more concerned with the scientific attitude to explore, investigate, and develop an understanding of our natural, human, social and cultural dimensions of local and wider environments.

Key Points

Environmental Studies is a multidimensional subject that covers important principles from various academic fields. It is a broad field that studies the basic principles of EVS as well as associated subjects such as social science, science, language, mathematics, etc. EVS emphasizes the following points:

  • The contents of EVS are organized thematically. Topics of both social studies and science are integrated because at the primary level students are not matured enough to study 'heavy' subjects like science and social science. Also, the reduced curriculum makes learning meaningful at a primary stage.
  • Provides scope for children’s expressions–oral and written and other creative expressions, etc.
  • Children learn about their environment through exploring and experiencing it, gathering and analysing information based on their observations and experiences, and constructing their own knowledge, enriching and enhancing it.
  • Learning is planned to progress from what the child already knows, to what is to be learnt, from local to global, or from the immediate environment to community and society and beyond.
  • Chapters begin with key questions initiating children into thinking and constructing their own knowledge.

Thus from the above-mentioned points, it is clear that EVS stands for Environmental Studies.

Question 77

Which one of the following is not an objective of the teaching EVS at the primary stage?

  1. AOption (a)

Learning in the classroom must be linked to the life outside the school.

  2. BOption (b)

Teachers must ensure perfect discipline in the classroom.

  3. COption (c)

Children must be encouraged to ask questions.

  4. DOption (d)

Children must be encouraged to explore their immediate environment.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

Teachers must ensure perfect discipline in the classroom.

Why this answer is correct

Learning Environmental Studies at Primary Level is designed to forge an integrated perspective that draws upon insight from Science, Social Science and Environmental Science. Environmental Education at this level is all about preparing learners to become global citizens with the ability to think critically, to develop sensitivity and respect for the natural and socio-cultural environment. The teacher plays a pivotal role in the formal education system where the teacher’s active participation and innovativeness are crucial for effective teaching and learning to occur.

Key Points

The NCF 2005 indicates the following as some of the objectives of teaching EVS:

  • To train children to locate and comprehend relationships between the natural, social and cultural environment;
  • Learning in the classroom must be linked to life outside the school. Children must be encouraged to explore their immediate environment.
  • To develop an understanding based on observation and illustration, drawn from lived experiences and physical, biological, social and cultural aspects of life rather than abstractions;
  • To create cognitive capacity and resourcefulness to make the child curious about social phenomena, starting with the family and moving on to wider spaces;
  • To nurture the child's curiosity and creativity, particularly about the natural environment (including artefacts and people), the children must be encouraged to ask questions.
  • To develop an awareness about environmental issues;
  • To engage the child in exploratory and hands-on activities to acquire basic cognitive and psychomotor skills through observation, classification, inference, etc.
  • To emphasise design and fabrication, estimation and measurement as a prelude to the development of technological and quantitative skills at later stages;
  • To be able to critically address gender concerns and issues of marginalisation and oppression with values of equality and justice, and respect for human dignity and rights.

Thus from the above-mentioned points, it is clear that teachers must ensure perfect discipline in the classroom is not the objective of teaching EVS  at the primary stage.

Key Points

  • Going beyond the textbook" refers to connect the child's conceptual understanding with their own experiences to create authenticity in learning and make them feel familiar with the topic.
  • So, connecting classroom learning with real-life experience will be the appropriate strategy to be followed.
  • Teaching-learning of EVS is as much about attitudes and values as about knowledge and information.
  • teaching strategies used for EVS must allow children to work together, examine multiple viewpoints, link concepts of the textbooks to their real lives, and take positive action.
  • These activities meet different requirements of learners having multiple intelligences.

  • A teacher can ask the students to the nearby park and asking them to observe the birds carefully. By doing this students will gain background knowledge of the birds, along with an overview of how they fly, eat, speak etc and how much they are important for the environment.
  • They will participate in a hands-on demonstration to visually demonstrate.
  • Students will also write a description of each bird, as well as develop their own ideas about birds. They can make a table of contents for the sample taken from the park.
  • Chart, diagrams, posters, flash-cards are a few examples of TLMs which can be used for better understanding.

Thus from the above-mentioned points, it is clear that Nalini is using different approaches of learning in order to meet different requirements of learners having multiple intelligences.

Approaches to make students sensitized towards wildlife conservation:

  • Enabling them to know the importance and benefits of conserving animals.
  • Motivating them to conserve animals for the betterment of the environment.
  • Making them learn to take care of the animal along with their own development.
  • Different viewpoints to the same concern, based on different beliefs, priorities, culture and context, get generated. Children learn to respect and appreciate diversity
  • Such learning processes develop divergent thinking, reflective thinking, listening abilities and inter-personnel skills among children
  • Helps to bring real-life situations into the classroom
  • Helps to inculcate positive inter-relationships
  • To sensitize the students to the 'concept of protection of animals' a teacher should motivate each student to adopt and nurture one animal.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

ii, iv, i, iii

Why this answer is correct

A balanced question paper is one that has a question stem that presents the respondent with both (all reasonably plausible) sides of an issue. Balanced questions are generally closed-ended questions, but there is nothing inherently wrong with using open-ended questions in which the question stem is balanced.

Key Points

Once the teacher or the test constructor is aware of the characteristics that a good test must possess, s/he can proceed to construct a test, which may be either a unit test or a full-fledged question paper covering all the aspects of the syllabus. Whether the test is a unit test for use in classroom testing or a question paper for use in final examinations, the steps of test construction are the same, which are as follows:

  • Prepare a Design: The first step in preparing a test is to construct a design. A test is not merely a collection of assorted questions, To be of any effective use, it has to be planned in advance keeping in view the objectives and the content of the course and the forms of questions to be used for testing these.
  • Preparing a BluePrint: After deciding on the design of the test, the blueprint is prepared. The blueprint is a three-dimensional chart that shows the placement of each question in respect of the objective and the content area that it tests. It also indicates the marks carried by each question.
  • Writing and editing the questions: After the blueprint is ready, questions are to be prepared according to the dimensions defined in the blueprint.
  • Preparing the Scoring Key and the Marking Scheme: The scoring key is to be prepared for objective 'type questions and the marking scheme for other questions. The scoring key gives the alphabet of the correct answer and the marks carried by each question.
  • Preparing Question-wise Analysis: After the question paper and marking scheme are finished, it is desirable to prepare a question-wise analysis. This analysis helps in tallying the questions in the test with the blueprint.

So, it can be concluded that ii, iv, i, iii is the correct sequence.

  • Creativity is the capability of an individual to bring novelty to his thoughts, ideas, perceptions, and activities. Any creative individual can create or discover something that is new, raw, and fresh in terms of principles, predictions, possibilities, and any new object.
  • Curiosity compels an individual to know the reason behind several incidents happening around him. It is referred to as the strong desire to learn and know something that is new to an individual.

Key Points

The EVS teacher can use different methods to arouse curiosity and creativity in learners:

Asking probing and imaginative questions- The teacher always must encourage originality on the part of children and should ask them a variety of questions to bring flexibility in their answers. - For example, how the day and night occur? - Why the sky is blue? - Why rainbow forms? - These types of questions will increase curiosity and creativity among learners.
Removal of hesitation and fear- The teacher should remove the hesitation and fear from the children, by allowing those children to say or write anything no matter how crude they are.
Freedom to respond- The teacher should allow adequate freedom to our children in responding to a situation. - They should be encouraged to think about as many ideas as they may for the solution of a problem.
Developing healthy habits in children- Self-confidence, persistence, and tolerance of criticism are some of the qualities that are necessary for creative output. - The teacher should help students to imbibe these qualities and they should be made to stand against the criticism of their creative expression.
Use of the creative resources- A teacher should use brainstorming, quizzes, debates, and teaching through three-dimensional models, and miniatures to help students in developing creativity for the attainment of various concepts.

So, it is concluded that to arouse curiosity and creativity in learners, EVS teachers should ask probing and imaginative questions.

Question 87

Asking the question "How will our life get affected if there were no electricity for a month?’’ aims at

  1. AOption (a)

sensitizing the students on using electricity judiciously

  2. BOption (b)

assessing the students on sources of electricity

  3. COption (c)

promoting imaginative and thinking skills of students

  4. DOption (d)

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

promoting imaginative and thinking skills of students

Why this answer is correct

Learning activities are activities designed by the teacher to enhance learning. Using different activities with flexibility will make learning more interesting for students.

  • Thinking skill is a skill of manipulating information to draw a conclusion or to generate ideas. It is a higher cognitive skill that allows beings to produce thought.

Thinking is:

  • a form of information processing.
  • the base of all cognitive activities.
  • an organized and goal-directed process.

Key Points

Open-ended questions promote thinking skills in the students as it encourages a deep style of thinking and:

  • discourages one-word answers.
  • provides detailed qualitative information.
  • requires an answer with a proper explanation.
  • promotes divergent thinking, creativity, and ingenuity.

For example, by asking the question "How will our life get affected if there were no electricity for a month?’’ the teacher seeks to judge or measure his or her students' thinking and imaginative abilities by asking such a question. In taxonomy, this form of evaluation occurs at the application level.

Thus it is clear that asking the question "How will our life get affected if there were no electricity for a month?’’ aims at promoting the imagination and thinking skills of students.

EVS at the primary level, its broad objectives, and some of the values inherent in teaching-learning of EVS. It will empower you to develop knowledge, ideas, values and attitudes about the surrounding world of the learners and make them aware to inculcate habits of being more environmentally friendly. Teaching-learning experiences in EVS are visualized to help the child locate himself/herself in a larger context – as part of a community, the country, etc.

Important Points Environmental Education at this level is all about preparing learners to become global citizens with the ability to think critically, to develop sensitivity and respect for the natural and socio-cultural environment. The teacher plays a pivotal role in the formal education system where the teacher’s active participation and innovativeness are crucial for effective teaching and learning to occur.

  • To sensitize the students to the 'concept of conservation of trees' a teacher should motivate each student to adopt and nurture one tree.  By adopting and caring for a tree children will become more conscious about the environment and also develop their observational skills.
  • Debates also help them in understanding the conservation of trees.
  • Organizing a poster-making competition on trees promote awareness and understanding of the importance of conserving trees

Thus it is clear that Showing children storage of logs of wood will be the least effective in achieving the desired objective.

Question 90

After having taught the lesson 'What if it finishes' to Class V students, Sheela administered a test to know the level of understanding of students about the topic. 4. DOption (d)

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

she did not use the correct methodology to teach the topic

Why this answer is correct

The teaching method is a way to  put theory into practice. It generally describes the pedagogy of children, general principles, and management strategies that are to be used through the whole teaching-learning process. It helps to ease the learning pace of students.

  • Environmental studies are the study of the environment where we live. It is more concerned with the scientific attitude to explore, investigate, and develop an understanding of our naturally occurring environment.
  • The main aim of teaching environmental studies is to make students understand the complex nature of their surroundings and to make them aware and acquainted with their environment.

Key PointsAfter having taught the lesson 'What if it finishes' to Class V students, Sheela administered a test to know the level of understanding of students about the topic. To her surprise, she observed that a large number of students had not understood the related concepts. This could be mainly due to the reason that she did not use the correct methodology to teach the topic.

  • This requires moving beyond traditional boundaries of disciplines and looking at priorities in a shared way.
  • This approach has been followed for the present syllabus.
  • Topics are not necessarily ‘integratable’ and are neither close to the way the child relates to her world.

Thus it is clear that this could be mainly due to the reason that she did not use the correct methodology to teach the topic.

English - I (30 questions)

Direction: Read the passage given below and answer the question that follow by selecting the most appropriate option.

In this floating village in Brazil, there is only one way to travel. Students go to school by boat. Locals go to worship by boat. Taxis arrive by boat. Even the soccer field is often a boat. There are three homemade fields on land, but they are submerged now in the annual flooding of the Black River. If the wooden goal posts had nets, they would be useful this time of year only for catching fish. So, young players and adults improvise. They play soccer at a community centre that has a roof but no walls. They play on the dock of a restaurant. And they play on a parked ferry, a few wearing life jackets to cushion their fall. The high-water mark in the Rio Negro this year was the fifth highest in more than a century of measurements.

As scientists study the impact of deforestation on the Amazon basin, and the cooling and warming of the Pacific Ocean, extreme patterns observed over the last 25 or 30 years raise an important unanswered question : “Are these trends human-induced climate change, or can we explain this with natural variability ?”

Villagers said that passing boats sometimes knocked down power lines during periods of exceptionally high water. And while the soccer fields are usually available for about half the year, the land has recently been dry enough for only four or five months of play. “We don’t have a place for the children to play,” said de Sousa, a shop owner. “They are stuck in the houses, bored.” The most adventurous, though, will find a game somewhere.

  • The objective of remedial teaching is to give additional help to learners who have fallen behind the rest of the class in any topic or subject.
  • It is the process of identifying slow learners and providing them with the necessary help and guidance to overcome their problems.

Objectives of Remedial Teaching in the English language:

  • To provide individualized teaching with intensive remedial support.
  • To eliminate ineffective habits.
  • To make learners learn better by giving additional help.
  • To provide learning activities and practical experiences to pupils according to their abilities and requirements.
  • To teach again the language items not properly learned.
  • To arise learners’ interest in learning with stimulating approaches.
  • Help the pupils to get rid of their common or specific weaknesses.
  • To transmit practical experiences to learners according to their diverse needs.

Hence, teachers can remediate for the student with language learning difficulty by focusing on individual progress with individualized instruction.

  4. DOption (d)

Frequent feedback on only grammatical errors

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

Linking of spoken language with writing

Why this answer is correct

Teachers can demystify the abstract grammatical terminology so that students can write through the “linking of spoken language with writing” by integrating grammar with the text, the teacher can demystify the abstract grammatical rules and terminology.

  • In the communicative competence model, the purpose of learning grammar is to learn the language of which grammar is a part.
  • The teacher as language facilitator provides opportunities in the class for students to learn to understand grammar forms and structures in relation to meaning and use for the specific communication tasks that students need to complete.
  • For example: circling the parts of speech in the text, when the students are reading the story or text — noun, pronoun and connecting sentences
  • The comprehensible input in an integrated manner is more effective than explicit teaching of certain structures which becomes a boring and mechanical process.
  • Separating spoken and written forms of language can fragment the nature of language which reflects the burden of incomprehension as mentioned in the “learning without burden” report by prof. Yashpal in 1992.
  • Frequent feedback on only grammatical errors can reduce the self-esteem of the student and may lose the message conveyed by the student.

Hence, we can conclude that Teachers can demystify abstract grammatical terminology so that students can write through the linking of spoken language with writing and express themselves comprehensively.

Question 109

Language is taught by beginning with simple sentences instead of the initial sounds and blends. This implies that

  1. AOption (a)

Communication is based on complete sentences

  2. BOption (b)

pronunciation has no place in language acquisition

  3. COption (c)

grammar and pronunciation have equal place in language teaching

  4. DOption (d)

Grammar is an important basis of communication

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

Grammar is an important basis of communication

Why this answer is correct

Language is taught by beginning with simple sentences instead of the initial sounds and blends. This implies that grammar is an important basis of communication.

  • Communicative language teaching (CLT) is an approach to language teaching where meaningful interaction is the goal, and also the means of instruction. Learners engage in interactive language practice and use English in authentic ways in their classroom to help them acquire language skills.
  • In this approach, teachers give attention to meaning and comprehension using simple sentences.
  • In  order to for learners to develop communicative competence in the language classroom, they must engage in meaningful and simple sentences.

Confusion Points

  • Communication is based on complete sentences, here it is not an appropriate option as communication does not focus on complete sentences but on meaningful interaction.
  • Language is taught by beginning with simple sentences instead of the initial sounds and blends, This implies that grammar is an important basis of communication.
  • Pronunciation and grammar are an important part of the language as a whole, but using bottom-up approaches that is starting from initial sounds and blends fragment the nature of language, and children do not acquire their second similar as the first language. Second language acquisition requires ‘going from meaning’ to ‘structure’.

Hence, we can conclude that Language is taught by beginning with simple sentences instead of the initial sounds and blends. This implies that Grammar is an important basis of communication, fluency is preferred over accuracy and later on, it can be supplemented with a focus on grammar, pronunciation, and complete sentences during communication.

Question 110

Direction: Answer the following questions by selecting the most appropriate option.

Which activity best supports the practice of speaking skills ?

  1. AOption (a)

Students independently research a topic and present a formal report

  2. BOption (b)

Teacher’s giving purposeful dictation by integrating it with a spoken activity

  3. COption (c)

Individually, students read a case-study and draft a response

  4. DOption (d)

Students tell their version of a story based on some hints, and apply it to a problem-solving situation

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

Students tell their version of a story based on some hints, and apply it to a problem-solving situation

Why this answer is correct

 Key Points

  • Speaking does not mean the mere pronunciation of sounds, words, and sentences.
  • According to Jean Aitchison in her book ‘The Articulate Mammal’. While speaking, we are simultaneously involved in many processes.
  • Before speaking, we plan in our minds, as to what we should speak about such that the listener understands what we are saying.

So, here students tell their version of a story based on some hints, and apply it to a problem-solving situation.

For example Think-Pair-Share: Think-pair-share is a collaborative learning strategy that requires students to work together to answer a question or to solve a problem. During this activity, students:

  • (Think) Students listen to a question about the text or topic and 'think' about what they know or what they have learned about this topic.
  • (Pair) Students form pairs or groups
  • (Share) Students share their responses with their partners or groups. They can also share with the whole class as part of a class discussion.

Whereas, in Teacher’s giving purposeful dictation by integrating it with a spoken activity does not provide an opportunity to think independently in a problem-solving situation, and thus speaking doesn't mean the mechanical activity of speaking.

Students tell their version of a story based on some hints, and apply it to a problem-solving situation, here the speaking activity is supplemented with a problem-solving activity. Thus, the most appropriate activity would be to let the Students tell their version of a story based on some hints, and apply it to a problem-solving situation. This reflects the true feature of speaking that is a spontaneous flow of thoughts, their own version of a story.

  • If Students independently research a topic and present a formal report, this limits their opportunity to apply it to a problem-solving situation collaboratively. This will not be an authentic approach for practicing speaking skills.

Hence, we can conclude that the teacher should provide children with opportunities to speak in the classroom, which is a unique means of learning and which leaves a deep impact on children’s social behavior and personality. Let the Students think out of the box and tell their version of a story based on some hints, which they can further apply it to a problem-solving situation.

Question 111

Direction: Answer the following questions by selecting the most appropriate option.

Develop a resource box for Class I. Teacher gives 3 instructions to each student regarding which items are to be put in it. [e.g. puppets, pieces of coloured fabric, brushes, stencils, colour pencils, small toys, etc.]. Student follows instructions. The activity is

  1. AOption (a)

Listening with concentration for specific information needed for a task

  2. BOption (b)

Stage in a listening session when a listener completes a task

  3. COption (c)

Listening to natural conversation between teacher and student

  4. DOption (d)

Listening to a speech which is semi-scripted

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

Listening with concentration for specific information needed for a task

Why this answer is correct

The activity here is listening to the instructions with concentration for specific information needed for a task. The act of listening essentially includes the meaning, so the students listening to the 3 instructions carefully, thus understanding which items need to be put into the resource box.

For example, The students here listening with concentration for the specific instructions as follows:

  1. Identify the items to put in the resource box (e.g., puppets, pieces of colored fabric, brushes, stencils, color pencils, small toys, etc.)
  2. The students listen to the instructions and complete the action.
  3. If students complete an incorrect action, they have to sit down and are out of the task.
  • The activity is not a stage in a listening session when a listener completes a task as here the listening activity is just before starting the task.
  • Neither it reflects a natural conversation between teacher and student nor a speech that is semi-scripted by the teacher as the teacher is giving instruction and students are following the instructions thus performing the actions based on it.

It is an activity that reflects listening for specific information.

Hence, we can conclude that the activity for developing a resource box for grade 1 students is listening to the instructions with concentration for specific information needed for a task.

Vocabulary in the target language should be kept under control, i.e., graded. This can be done by

  1. AOption (a)

Teachers providing a short list of words that are commonly used

  2. BOption (b)

Students learning and practicing in the context of real situations

  3. COption (c)

students write/speak using a graded list of new words

  4. DOption (d)

students read a prescribed book and take a vocabulary quiz

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

Students learning and practicing in the context of real situations

Why this answer is correct

Vocabulary in the target language should be kept under control, i.e., graded. This can be done by students learning and practicing in the context of real situations using authentic materials.

  • The teacher neither needs to teach all the words nor provide a short list of words that are commonly used, as this will lead to meaningless memorization of words.
  • The teacher should focus only on those Vocabulary Items that are:
  • Frequent
  • Important
  • Needed for Classroom Tasks & Activities
  • Regular (common patterns or features)
  • Easy to learn
  • students learning and practicing in the context of real situations support the Vocabulary in the target language.
  • Whereas if students write/speak using a graded list of new words then it becomes a mechanical drill and the purpose of the activity remains for the sake of grades. Furthermore, if students read a prescribed book and take a vocabulary quiz, this limits the student's active participation and exploration. So these are not the appropriate activities for vocabulary building and grading.

Hence, we can conclude that teachers must create intentional learning opportunities which reflect direct instruction of the target vocabulary. This can be done by:Students learning and practicing in the context of real situations.

  4. DOption (d)

content organization and use of vocabulary

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

Use of syntax, lexis, and structures

Why this answer is correct

To achieve communicative competence, learners need to be competent in four aspects: linguistic, sociolinguistic, discourse, and strategic competencies. Here, ‘linguistic competence’ concerns students’ use of syntax, lexis, and structures as Communicative competence is a term coined by Dell Hymes in 1966 in reaction to Noam Chomsky’s (1965) notion of “linguistic competence”.

  • Communicative competence is the intuitive functional knowledge and the principles of language usage.
  • This approach reflects that a language user needs to use the language not only correctly, but also appropriately.
  • Here, ‘linguistic competence’ concerns students' Use of syntax, lexis, and structures’ as Linguistic competence is the knowledge of the language code, i.e., its grammar and vocabulary, and also of the conventions of its written representation.
  • The rules govern the combination of words and phrases to structure sentences (i.e., syntax), and the way that meaning is conveyed through language (i.e., semantics).
  • Sociolinguistic competence is the knowledge of sociocultural rules of use, i.e., knowing how to use and respond to language appropriately reflecting the expression of the meaning of what they communicate.
  • Discourse competence deals with organizing words, phrases, and sentences in order to create conversations, speeches, poetry, email messages, newspaper articles, etc
  • it is the ability to organize the content during communication and use of vocabulary. For instance, the speaker may not know a certain word, thus will plan to either paraphrase or ask what that word is in the target language.
  • Strategic competence is the ability to use formats and stylistic devices. Thus, the speaker knows how to keep the communication channel open.
  • Hence, we can conclude that linguistic competence concern with students' use of syntax, lexis, and structures.

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

dramatization, role-play and re-writing from a different point of view

Why this answer is correct

Examples of “Creative Reading” projects for assessment are Dramatization, role-play, and re-writing from a different point of view involves creativity and writing thus focus on developing creative reading.

  • Creative reading is defined as reading for implied and inferred meanings, appreciative reactions, and critical evaluation.
  • It provides an opportunity for intensive reading and the teachers can assess students' creative reading by giving them the task of re-writing the text from a different perspective.
  • It aims to stimulate students to think of reading as a creative process and involved in active reading.
  • Reference work done in the library for more information on the theme does not focus is on constructing meaning by students and getting a big idea. This does not provide the opportunity for a learner to involve in the reading process.
  • Surfing the internet for related information is often termed as extensive reading as the student is reading for searching particular information.it does not provide scope for intensive and creative reading.

  • Reading for meaning is an intensive reading process as every reader brings his/her own emotional baggage, prior knowledge, and constructs meaning from the text. But here, the focus is on the assessment of projects based on creative reading “Examples of “Creative Reading” projects for assessment are”.

Hence, we can conclude that “Examples of “Creative Reading” projects for assessment are” dramatization, role-play and re-writing from a different point of view.

    sandwich approach

  2. BOption (b)

    communicative approach

  3. COption (c)

    Bilingual technique

  4. DOption (d)

    structural technique

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

Bilingual technique

Why this answer is correct

The teacher’s cues for activities are given in the first language, in a second language class. This bilingual technique exploits the communicative potential of a given structure.

  • The students’ L1 by incorporating it into the lesson. It does this by using bilingual technique all or part of the L1 within L2.
  • C.J. Dodson (1967) was the proponent of the bilingual method. It is used for teaching a foreign language, and it is complementary to the audiovisual method. From the beginning, the sandwich approach is used to convey the meaning bilingually. The mother tongue is used for bilingual pattern drills.
  • The bilingual technique exploits the communicative potential of a given structure as Learners may rely more on their L1, and it can turn out to be a translation method. The student, unable to use the skills in target language, hence lose the motivation and communicative potential of a given structure.
  • Sandwich approach: this approach involves the use of a positive comment, followed by a negative, then closed off with another positive comment for constructive feedback.
  • The structural technique is a technique wherein the learner masters the pattern of a sentence. It is based on the assumptions that language can be best learned through a scientific selection and grading of the structures or patterns of sentences and vocabulary.
  • Communicative approach:. The communicative approach is based on the idea that learning a language successfully comes through having to communicate real meaning. This approach focus is on meaningful interaction rather than on making complete sentences and cues in the first language. It focuses on fluency but not accuracy.

Hence, we can conclude that the teacher’s cues for activities are given in the first language, in a second language class**. This** Bilingual technique exploits the communicative potential of a given structure.

Question 116

The second language classroom is a confluence of varied languages. Teachers should give their students

  1. AOption (a)

    adequate self-explanatory notes

  2. BOption (b)

summaries and simplified versions of texts

  3. COption (c)

Worksheets with a variety of tasks while covering the syllabus

  4. DOption (d)

Comfortable environments to develop requisite skills

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

Comfortable environments to develop requisite skills

Why this answer is correct

The second language classroom is a confluence of varied languages. Teachers should give their students comfortable environments to develop requisite skills. In Krashen’s words, children require ‘comprehensible input’ in the second language. ‘Comprehensible input’ refers to using language which children are capable of understanding, and at the same time holds challenges for them.

  • An important part of making this language comprehensible is providing it in natural, communicative situations that are meaningful to children, and this will help children in meeting the challenge. For example, if children in your class know some words in English, then ‘comprehensible input’ might mean using these words in sentences that are meaningful for them.
  • ‘Comprehensible input’ and a ‘natural and communication friendly environment’ play an important role in acquiring a second language.
  • In the second language, the teacher should provide a comfortable environment so that students can express themselves and learn the requisite skills such as listening, speaking, reading, and writing holistically.
  • Adequate self-explanatory notes, summaries, and simplified versions of texts and Worksheets with a variety of tasks while covering the syllabus focused on writing and reading skills only in a fragmented manner. As the second language classroom is a confluence of varied languages, these do not help students to relate and express themselves.
  • In the second language classroom, learning from authentic material and resources is a must.

Hence, we can conclude that The second language classroom is a confluence of varied languages. Teachers should give their students Comfortable environments to develop requisite skills.

" ______ supply 'comprehensible input' in low anxiety situations" is the basis of language acquisition. An example would be

  1. AOption (a)

    teacher-directed learning in the classroom

  2. BOption (b)

Collaboration of students in learning situations

  3. COption (c)

home-work designed to use parents’ support

  4. DOption (d)

students receive feedback for correction regularly

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

Collaboration of students in learning situations

Why this answer is correct

“Collaboration of students in learning situations supply 'comprehensible input' in low anxiety situations” is the basis of language acquisition.

  • This implies that the collaboration of students in learning situations provides low anxiety situations.
  • These methods do not force early production in the second language but allow students to produce when they are 'ready', recognizing that improvement comes from supplying communicative and comprehensible input, and not from forcing and correcting production.
  • Whereas in teacher-directed learning in the classroom and students receive feedback for correction regularly provide highly anxious situations which do not involve many students of a classroom as this doesn't provide constructive feedback.
  • Furthermore, homework designed to use parents’ support doesn't provide opportunities for students to actively involve in acquiring a second language and practicing the language.
  • According to Krashen 'comprehensible input' is the crucial and necessary ingredient for the acquisition of language.

Hence, we can conclude that Collaboration of students in learning situations provide low anxiety situation and supply comprehensible input as well, which are the basis of language acquisition.

How can teachers respond to or ‘correct’ students’ writing in ways that are effective?

  1. AOption (a)

Correcting every error in the essay

  2. BOption (b)

Writing detailed comments in the margin

  3. COption (c)

    Offering encouraging and remarks

  4. DOption (d)

Locating patterns of error and suggesting improvement

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

Locating patterns of error and suggesting improvement

Why this answer is correct

Teachers can respond to or ‘correct’ students’ writing in ways that are effective by locating patterns of error and suggesting improvement.

  • For correcting students' writing, the teacher can provide constructive feedback and suggest improvement after locating patterns of error.
  • For example, I really liked the way you presented your thoughts.
  • How do you feel about adding the content from the text and relating your experiences with it?
  • Correcting every error in the essay can let down the self-esteem of the students, and also the red marks of error everywhere impact their motivation to learn the language.
  • Offering encouragement and remarks is important, but it is also important for students to learn from their mistakes and error, thus it will not provide any suggestion for improvement.

  • Whereas writing detailed comments in the margin can be effective for improving reading skills.
  • It is like talking back to the text, and it is a meaningful activity for active reading and involving students in reading as a meaning-making process.
  • For example: Think about what thoughts and feelings the text arouse in you.
  • Locating patterns of error and suggesting improvement can be supplemented with marginal commentary later on.
  • For example: Do you agree or disagree with what the students' writing is saying? Are you confused by a certain section of the text? Write your reactions to the reading in the margins of the text itself, so students can refer to it again easily. This will not only make reading and writing more active and memorable, but it may be a material student can use in their writing later on.

Hence, we can conclude that locating patterns of error and suggesting improvement is the most effective way that teachers can respond to 'correct' the students' writing.

  2. BOption (b)

Explaining to the parents about the child’s characteristics and abilities

  3. COption (c)

Providing instructions for dealing with the students at home

  4. DOption (d)

Making a clear reference to the learning objectives

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

Explaining to the parents about the child’s characteristics and abilities

Why this answer is correct

Some parents of students with learning difficulties may have unrealistic expectations from their children. The teacher can support such students by explaining to the parents about the child’s characteristics and abilities.

  • Everyone possesses certain weaknesses and strengths. The school system and parents should adjust to cater to the needs of children and support every child's unique abilities and talents.
  • Inclusion in Education is about accepting everyone irrespective of abilities, disabilities, and socio-economic status for facilitating the learning for all students with appropriate support services.
  • Learning difficulties indicate an individual's need for alternative learning methods using accommodation and modification.
  • Accommodation is the process of changing how they are learning.
  • Modification is the process of changing what they are learning.
  • Making a clear reference to the learning objectives often term as criterion-referenced assessment which reflects that each child's performance is compared directly to the pre-determined standard and objectives as students with a learning difficulty may not fulfill those standard expectations.
  • Parents and teachers should understand that every child is unique, thus they do not follow the same milestones.
  • Providing instructions for dealing with the students at home provides a general framework. It doesn't cater to the needs of the individual.
  • Persuading them to liaise with other such students does not help much with respect to learning difficulties. The unrealistic expectations come from making comparisons with other children's performances which is often termed as norm-referenced assessment.

Hence, we can conclude that explaining to the parents about the child’s characteristics and abilities helps the parents of students with learning difficulties that they do not have unrealistic expectations from their children. Instead, they should cater to the individualistic needs of the learners.

Why this answer is correct

Educators use YouTube to teach visual learners with videos, podcasts for auditory learners, and interactive games for tactile learners in a language class. Here, multimedia caters to individual learning styles. Such as :

Visual:

  • Use graphic organizers to show word and concepts relationships.
  • Ask students to highlight texts and color-code their notes.
  • Draw pictures of new concepts and ask students to do the same.
  • Provide maps and charts to teach new material.
  • Have students use different fonts, colors, and sizes when/if using the computer.

Auditory:

  • Discuss new topics and subjects as a group and ask students to do it with partners.
  • Ask students to record lectures and their own presentations and review them afterward.
  • Have students read aloud and voice concepts and ideas to them.
  • Ask students to create tunes and rhythms when learning new material.

Kinesthetic:

  • Use role-play to act out concepts and ideas taught in your course.
  • Encourage students to take notes while listening to lectures or reading.
  • Associate each new word with a gesture or movement.
  • Have students spell new words in teams using their bodies.
  • Interactive games for tactile learners.

Linguistic differences: this implies the linguistic differences or variation in terms of regional, social, or contextual differences in the ways that a particular language is used.

  • For example 1) In British English, color is spelled as color, whereas in American English it is spelled as color. 2) Shoelaces or shoe-strings.

Learning disabilities: Learning disabilities are disorders that affect the ability to understand or use spoken or written language, do mathematical calculations, coordinate movements, or direct attention such as ADHD, Dyslexia, and Dysgraphia.

  • Authentic second language:  it is an instructional approach that allows students to explore, discuss, and meaningfully construct concepts and relationships in contexts that involve real-world problems and projects that are relevant to the learner for learning a second language.

Hence, we can conclude that to cater to individual learning styles educators use YouTube to teach visual learners with videos, podcasts for auditory learners and interactive games for tactile learners in a language class.

Meditating can have an almost instant effect on reducing stress, researchers have found. They say three consecutive days of 25-minute sessions can have a dramatic effect. Researchers studied ‘mindful meditation’ - the guiding principle is to live more ‘in the moment,’ spending less time going over past stresses and worrying about future problems. Techniques include moving the focus of attention around the body and observing sensations that arise - the so-called ‘body scan’. A secular practice, it is said to help people recognise and overcome negative thoughts. For the study, the research team had 66 healthy individuals aged 18-30 years old participate in a three-day experiment. Some participants went through a brief mindfulness meditation training program; for 25 minutes for three consecutive days, the individuals were given breathing exercises to help them monitor their breath and pay attention to their present moment experiences. A second group of participants completed a matched three-day cognitive training program in which they were asked to critically analyze poetry in an effort to enhance problem-solving skills. Following the final training activity, all participants were asked to complete stressful speech and mathematical tasks in front of stern-faced evaluators. Each individual reported their stress levels in response to stressful speech and mathematical performance stress tasks, and provided saliva samples for measurement of cortisol, commonly referred to as the stress hormone. The participants who received the brief mindfulness meditation training reported reduced stress perceptions to the speech and mathematical tasks, indicating that the mindfulness meditation fostered psychological stress resilience.

Question 136

Direction: Answer the following questions by selecting the most appropriate option.

The teacher’s role is shifting from “sage on the stage” to “guide on the side”. Technology integration helps this process when

  1. AOption (a)

systems store more data and administer tests individually to students

  2. BOption (b)

  3. COption (c)

easy retrieval of large quantities of stored data is used to facilitate preparation of notes

  4. DOption (d)

assessment of students’ online inputs is done quickly without supervision, at any time

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

students actively search for and explore answers instead of receiving standard inputs

Why this answer is correct

Sage on the stage characterization of a teacher is related to a teacher-centered model which is synonymous with standard lecture as the principal mode of delivery.  Whereas the changing role of sage to a guide and participant is related to the student-centered model. Here the teacher rather than preaching like a sage be the ally of the students and actively involve the learns in the teaching-learning process.

Important Points

Based on the role of teachers and students in the teaching-learning process, classroom spaces can be classified into – teacher-centered classrooms and students centered classrooms.

Teacher centered ClassroomLearner-centered classroom
- The entire focus is on the teacher.- The focus is on both the students and the facilitator.
- Learners are passive listeners.- Learners are active participants.
- The teacher chooses a topic for the students, monitors them, and evaluates their learning.- Learners have some choice over topics, they work in pairs/groups/individually and evaluate their learning along with the facilitator.
- The teacher is not considerate about individual learners.- Facilitators consider the different learning styles of the learners and try to modify the lesson plans accordingly.
- They try to make lesson plans based on the time available for the teaching-learning process and try to cover the contents of the program on time.- Facilitators try to make lesson plans based on the time available for the teaching-learning process and they are more considered about individual growth.
- Availability of a wide variety of teaching-learning material is not necessary.- A wide variety of teaching-learning materials based on the learning style of learners is required.

Key Points

  • Technology can be used in both teacher-centered and student-centered classrooms. Let us see the aim of technology in student-centered classrooms:
  • Technology can be used by the teachers of student-centered classrooms as an essential tool to create a meaningful and active learning environment.
  • Technology in these classrooms should be used to enable the students to search for solutions actively rather than receiving standard inputs.
  • The careful integration of technology into the classroom provides teachers and students with educational resources that can inspire creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.

Hence, the teacher’s role is shifting from “sage on the stage” to “guide on the side”. Technology integration helps this process when students actively search for and explore answers instead of receiving standard inputs.

Confusion Points

  • When systems store more data and administer tests individually to students it is still a teacher-mediated method that is employed to test students' proficiency.
  • When easy retrieval of large quantities of stored data is used to facilitate the preparation of notes, it is a better use of technology but still, it is not characteristic of a learner-centered classroom.
  • When the assessment of students’ online inputs is done quickly without supervision, at any time is a use of technology which can be done in both learner-centered and teacher-centered classrooms. But it is not a characteristic of the technology used in learner-centered classrooms.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

identifying the areas of difficulty

Why this answer is correct

The teaching-learning process is aimed to bring permanent change in the behaviour of an individual (knowledge, skill, and attitude) that can be acquired consciously. It involves planning and execution of several activities and experiences to bring the desired outcomes. If the outcomes are not achieved as per expectations or much lower than that it is considered as the "failure" of the system.

Key Points

While dealing with slow learners who are learning at different paces and levels. Teachers can follow different methods of instruction as described below:

  • Differentiated method:
  • It is a teaching method where the instructors tailor their lessons to meet individual needs.
  • Differentiation consists of the efforts of the instructors to respond to variance among learners in the classroom.
  • Teachers can differentiate elements based on –
  • Content – What the learners need to learn or how to the student will get access to the information.
  • Process – activities in which the learners engage in order to make sense of the content.
  • Products – Culminating assignments that help the learners to rehearse, extend and apply the learning that has taken place.
  • Mastery Learning:
  • The teacher here can combine the five elements of mastery learning to remediate the learners as:
  • Pre-assessment – It helps teachers to identify the learners’ prior knowledge, skills, and experiences. It helps the teachers to focus attention on learning targets and clear misconceptions.
  • Group–based initial instruction - Although mastery-based approaches focus on personalized learning, the initial instruction is usually not done exclusively for each student.
  • Regular formative assessment – It helps teachers to categorize learners.
  • Corrective instruction - corrective instruction approaches are versatile enough to accommodate different student learning styles, modalities, and intelligence levels. It is different from re-teaching.
  • Enrichment Activities - For the students who have mastered the learning material teachers aim to provide challenging yet rewarding learning experiences.

Hence, Slow learners fail to grasp effectively and mix up words and structures easily. Teachers can remediate by beginning with identifying the areas of difficulty.

Confusion Points

  • After the teacher has identified the areas of difficulty the teacher can Set drills for practice, can focus on peer learning.
  • After each content prepare, a summary of the items learned.
  • It is important to note that the tasks can be set only after identifying the difficulties.

Question 138

According to language acquisition theory, when there is a lack of sufficient information in the language input, there is a universal grammar that applies to all

  1. AOption (a)

    colloquial languages

  2. BOption (b)

    modern languages

  3. COption (c)

    classical languages

  4. DOption (d)

    human languages

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

human languages

Why this answer is correct

Key Points

  • Language is a medium through which one can express one’s messages, ideas, thoughts, and feelings.
  • Language acquisition is the process by which humans acquire the capacity to perceive and comprehend language, as well as to produce and use words and sentences to communicate.
  • Various theorists have tried to understand the process that goes in the young mind that acquires him with the language structure. The most prominent is Chomsky.
  • Language Acquisition Device (LAD) was proposed by Noam Chomsky.
  • It is a part of nativist theory which states that some skills are hard-wired into the brain at birth.
  • Chomsky suggests that every child since birth can learn grammar (universal grammar) regardless of the language (modern/colloquial/classical/regional, etc.).
  • LAD thus is a hypothetical module of the human mind that gives a possible explanation for children’s innate predisposition for language acquisition.
  • It is a mental capacity of a young individual to produce language and acquire it.

Hence, we can conclude that according to language acquisition theory, when there is a lack of sufficient information in the language input, there is a universal grammar that applies to all human languages.

Question 139

Direction: Answer the following questions by selecting the most appropriate option.

For English as a second language, ‘acquisition-poor environment’ is one where

  1. AOption (a)

Hindi / Mother tongue is the lingua franca

  2. BOption (b)

English language is used only in the classroom

  3. COption (c)

English is not spoken at home at all

  4. DOption (d)

access to any learning material is unavailable to students

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

English language is used only in the classroom

Why this answer is correct

Language acquisition is the process by which humans acquire the capacity to perceive and comprehend language as well as to produce and use words and sentences to communicate.

In our country, English is generally taught as a second language.

Key Points

  • For children to acquire the language appropriately proper acquisition environment should be made available.
Acquisition-Poor EnvironmentsAcquisition-Rich Environments
- These are those language learning environments where exposure to the target language is limited to the classroom.- These are those language learning environments where exposure to the target language is beyond the purview of the classroom.
- The target language when absent in the speech community of the learner i.e., home or peer group is also termed under acquisition-poor environments.- Besides the formal language learning in the classroom, the learner has access to the target language in the speech community of his/her home and peer group.
- In such an environment, opportunities for learning the language are severely limited and occur only in the formal educational setting- In such an environment, opportunities for learning the language are enhanced.

Hence, we conclude that Acquisition Poor Environment refers to the limitation of learning the English language in the classroom.

Confusion Points

  • The target language may/may not be spoken at home but it is important that appropriate exposure is given to the learners in the school.
  • A speech community is important at school for easy acquisition of the target language.
  • Even though the learning material is unavailable the most important learning material is peers and teachers for the easy acquisition of the target language.

Question 140

Direction: Answer the following questions by selecting the most appropriate option.

At Class II, sharing stories, familiar experiences, and interests, employing gestures where appropriate, is a sub-skill of ______ function.

  1. AOption (a)

    reading

  2. BOption (b)

    listening

  3. COption (c)

    speaking

  4. DOption (d)

    writing

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

speaking

Why this answer is correct

Important Points

  • Language skills are necessary for effective communication in any environment and to interact with others. It allows an individual to comprehend and produce language for proper and effective interpersonal communication.
  • The four basic language skills are listening-speaking-reading-writing.
  • Speaking refers to the cognitive and linguistic skill which helps the individual to communicate thought naturally or without effort.

Key Points

For awaking confidence or for developing speaking skills in young learners, the teacher should:

  • Give time to learners for talking and listening to build their thoughts.
  • Should develop awareness on social nature of speaking.
  • Take every opportunity to make a connection between everyday life and speaking in class with peers and teachers.
  • Provide opportunities to express their interests and experiences other than academic context.
  • Share stories with appropriate gestures to intrigue learners, build the context, and make learners confident in expressing various thoughts.

Thus, at Class II, sharing stories, familiar experiences, and interests, employing gestures where appropriate, is a sub-skill of speaking function.

Confusion Points

  • Reading stories or familiar experiences would be a sub-skill function of reading.
  • Listening to the stories, familiar experiences of other participants in the activity would be a sub-skill function of listening.
  • Writing the stories or experiences would be a sub-skill function of writing.

Question 141

Direction: Answer the following questions by selecting the most appropriate option.

In the case of vocabulary use, grammar provides a pathway to learners to

  1. AOption (a)

speak in formal situations with greater accuracy and confidence

  2. BOption (b)

re-tell listening inputs into oral output

  3. COption (c)

combine lexical items into meaningful and communicative expression

  4. DOption (d)

draft formal pieces of writing in higher classes

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

combine lexical items into meaningful and communicative expression

Why this answer is correct

Key Points

  • Grammar teaching is the important ability to use the grammar structures appropriately.
  • In the teaching of grammar, learners are taught rules of language commonly known as sentence patterns, language structure, meaning, and use.
  • Grammar is regarded as the basis for a set of language skills listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  • In listening and speaking the grammar helps to acquire the capability of producing grammatically acceptable utterances in the language.
  • In vocabulary, grammar provides a pathway to learners about how lexical items should be combined into a good sentence so that meaningful and communicative statements or expressions can be formed.
  • In writing, grammar allows students to put their ideas into intelligible sentences so that they can successfully communicate in a written form.

Hence, we can conclude that in the case of vocabulary use, grammar provides a pathway for learners to combine lexical items into meaningful and communicative expressions.

Question 142

Direction: Answer the following questions by selecting the most appropriate option.

Selection of language items while determining the second language syllabus should take into account ______.

  1. AOption (a)

the minimal disruption of school schedule

  2. BOption (b)

how easy it is to learn/use the item

  3. COption (c)

how easy it is to teach the concept

  4. DOption (d)

the frequency and range of use of the items

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

the frequency and range of use of the items

Why this answer is correct

Important Points

  • A syllabus is a specification of the content of a course of instruction and lists what will be taught and tested.
  • While teaching vocabulary in the second language a teacher should focus on various principles as the objective of the course and time available.
  • Not every word that a native speaker speaks is necessary for second language learners.

Key Points Let us look at the pointers which are necessary for vocabulary instruction:

  • Word Frequency - It means the teachers should use those words which are frequently used rather than less useful ones. After gaining mastery on the first set of words learners can use less frequently used words.
  • Environment Applicability -Learners learn those words easily which are connected with their environment. Thus, teachers should first focus on such words.
  • Structural Consideration - Common structure words should be taught earlier than the less common ones. Example pronouns should come earlier than the prepositions.
  • Material Association - Teacher should select such words which have a concrete association
  • Range of Applicability - The range of the words taught should be such as may apply to a variety of subjects.

Confusion Points

  • The syllabus should not be based on the school environment or rules rather on the skills that we aim to impart to the learners.
  • Learning a concept easily or teaching a concept easily is subjective to the teachers and learners.
  • One should objectively focus on the target language at hand for easy acquisition of language by the learners.

Hence, we can conclude that selection of language items while determining the second language syllabus should take into account the frequency and range of use of the items.

Question 143

Direction: Answer the following questions by selecting the most appropriate option.

One of the sub-skills that is assessed for speaking would be

  1. AOption (a)

understanding, and responding in a paragraph, to literary works

  2. BOption (b)

using appropriate volume, clarity and gestures in individual or group situations

  3. COption (c)

spelling common, frequently used words correctly

  4. DOption (d)

listening actively and responding to others in small and large group situations

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

using appropriate volume, clarity and gestures in individual or group situations

Why this answer is correct

Key Points

  • Speaking skills are defined as the skills which allow us to communicate effectively.
  • They give us the ability to convey information verbally and in a way that the listener can understand.
  • Teachers can assess learners on the following parameters:
  • How many words do students learn?
  • How many new vocabularies in phrases are learned by students?
  • If the students focus on pronunciation using clarity, gestures, and volume?
  • Can they clearly articulate their thoughts?
  • Do they understand how English flows?

Additional Information

  • Native speakers of English link words together, often resulting in a sound disappearing, or a new sound being made.
  • Students should understand the flow, pronunciation, and expression.
  • For this student can:
  • Practice self-talk which involves getting them to talk loudly in English to themselves.
  • Using technology that can encourage students to download practice apps.

Confusion Points

  • Understanding and responding in a paragraph to literary works is one of the sub-skills for improving writing.
  • Focusing on spelling is again one of the sub-skills for improving writing.
  • Listening actively and responding to others in small and large group situations can be used to assess the listening skills of the learners.

Hence, we can conclude that one of the subs – skills that are assessed for speaking would be using appropriate volume, clarity, and gestures in individual or group situations.

Question 144

Direction: Answer the following questions by selecting the most appropriate option.

Grammar gains its prominence in language teaching, particularly in English as a foreign language. Accuracy in language use can be achieved through

  1. AOption (a)

    intensive practice with sentence patterns

  2. BOption (b)

grammar is taught as the basis for all four language skills

  3. COption (c)

reading more books written in the target language

  4. DOption (d)

integrating knowledge of structures with use and meaning

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

intensive practice with sentence patterns

Why this answer is correct

Important Points

Intensive practice with sentence patterns is useful in achieving accuracy in language. Sentence Structure is important because it provides us with the framework for the clear written expression of our ideas.

 Additional Information

Whereas the other options are not appropriate because -

  • Grammar is taught as the basis of all four language skills but accuracy can be achieved by practice only.
  • Reading more books written in the target language will help you to understand the language better but to improve accuracy you need to practice sentence patterns.
  • Integrating knowledge of structures with use and meaning is important in language learning and it will help in understanding sentence patterns but accuracy is achieved by the practice of sentence patterns.

Hence, option 1 is the most appropriate answer.

Question 145

Direction: Answer the following questions by selecting the most appropriate option.

“Some research has shown that developing students’ native language skills leads to higher scores academically over the long term in English.” A bilingual class would be characterized by

  1. AOption (a)

the use of students’ native language in the second language class

  2. BOption (b)

revision work done in the native language

  3. COption (c)

    more guided translation activities, individual/collaborative

  4. DOption (d)

the re-formulation of concepts, structure-use in the native language

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

the re-formulation of concepts, structure-use in the native language

Why this answer is correct

Language is not only a means of communication, it is also a medium through which most of our knowledge is acquired. It is a system that, to a great extent, structures the reality around us.

Key Points

  • Bilingualism refers to proficiency in the use of more than one language or the use of at least two languages (maybe more) either by an individual or by a group of speakers.
  • The re-formulation of concepts, structure-use in the native language will help them connect with the usage and meanings, expressions behind what is being taught to them. If they are able to connect with the right emotion in their native language, they will be able to learn quickly.

Hint

  • The use of students’ native language in the second language class is not supporting the academic acceleration of scores in English as the use and advantage of the native language class and its reference with the language to be learned shifts to the second language.
  • Revision work in a native language is not the solution here as the purpose of revision work is to reflect or look back on what they have already learned ( which they may have learned by using the native language). Hence while doing revision, they should focus on putting more effort into English.
  • Guided translations are helpful but are not effective and very time-consuming as the guiding channel takes some time and energy. the activities will be first translated in the native language and then will be performed. it will make the activities uninteresting. meanwhile, the activities have a specific purpose, i.e. to bolster what is learned from the book where the learners will primarily take the help of native language. so here also they should focus on excelling in English

Thus, from the above-mentioned points, it is clear that Some research has shown that developing students’ native language skills lead to higher scores academically over the long term in English.” A bilingual class would be characterized by the re-formulation of concepts, structure-use in the native language.

Question 146

Direction: Answer the following questions by selecting the most appropriate option.

Motivation is an important factor in language learning. For example, in Class VI, ______ may be done.

  1. AOption (a)

memorization and use of necessary vocabulary

  2. BOption (b)

systematic analysis and use of structures

  3. COption (c)

use of visual devices and game-like exercises

  4. DOption (d)

use of the mother tongue as the ‘medium’

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

use of visual devices and game-like exercises

Why this answer is correct

Key Points

Characteristics of teachers who want to help build effective language skills for students:

  • An effective teacher focuses on learner-centered education.
  • They advocate a philosophy of teaching in which students are given a far more important role in curriculum decisions than has traditionally been the case.
  • They are learning facilitators rather than didactic instructors or preachers and that to be successful as learning facilitators, they should be trained to be sensitive and caring, genuine, and empathetic.
  • One of the most important qualities of a good teacher is patience with the learning process. Patience builds the learner's trust. Patience allows the learner to try new things.
  • Motivates them to continue learning.
  • To facilitate learning, the teacher should use the textbook as well as a variety of other relevant teaching-learning materials like games and visual devices.
  • He/she generates enthusiasm for learning in his/her classroom. This can be achieved by using relevant TLMs.
  • He/she has effective communication - precise terminology, connected discourse, and clear transition signals, emphasis, and congruent verbal and non-verbal behavior.
  • He/she constantly updates himself/herself by gathering learners' feedback and self-analysis.
  • Effective teachers emphasize healthy social and interpersonal development and de-emphasize rigorous, performance-driven, and test-oriented approaches to the subject matter.

Hence, we can conclude that motivation is an important factor in language learning. For example, in Class VI, the use of visual devices and game-like exercises may be done.

Confusion Points

  • Rote memorization demotivates the learner for any task.
  • The task should be made interesting so that it can arouse curiosity in learners.
  • Mother tongue is a great medium to learn the language but it may not necessarily motivate learners to acquire the language.
  • Systematic analysis and use of structures help the learners acquire rules of the language which until it is contextually placed with the help of activities, games or visual devices remain meaningless to the learners.

Question 147

Direction: Answer the following questions by selecting the most appropriate option.

Second language acquisition is more effective when it

  1. AOption (a)

is used as the basis for discussing grammatical concepts

  2. BOption (b)

involves periodic revision work by the teacher and students

  3. COption (c)

involves mostly self-study by students, using certain guidelines

  4. DOption (d)

is practised in situations familiar to students

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

is practised in situations familiar to students

Why this answer is correct

Key Points

  • Second language learning is significantly similar to first language learning.
  • When the young students learn the native language they are given significant time and situational cues to pick up the language structure.
  • Similarly, when the students acquire a second language they must be given practice in familiar situations and environments.
  • It would help the students to be adapt to the rules of the target language without rote memorization.
  • Factors that are necessary for second language acquisition are:
  • Environment Applicability -Learners learn those words easily which are connected with their environment.
  • Structural Consideration - Common structure words should be taught earlier than the less common ones. Example pronouns should come earlier than the prepositions.
  • Material Association - Teacher should select such words/phrases which have the concrete association
  • Range of Applicability - The range of the words taught should be such as may apply to a variety of subjects.

Hence we can conclude that second language acquisition is more effective when it is practiced in situations familiar to students.

Confusion Points

  • Acquisition of a second language gets hampered if many grammatical concepts are taught at once.
  • Rather than periodic revision, a whole language approach should be followed by the teacher to assist second language learners.
  • Some studies state that self-study by the learners can generate misconceptions, hence learners have to be told explicitly the rules of the language.
  • They should also be given adequate exposure to practice the second language so that they can confidently read, write, speak and listen.

Question 148

Direction: Answer the following questions by selecting the most appropriate option.

Among the four language skills, which pair constitutes the reinforcement skills ?

  1. AOption (a)

    Reading and listening

  2. BOption (b)

    Speaking and listening

  3. COption (c)

    Reading and speaking

  4. DOption (d)

    Reading and writing

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

Reading and writing

Why this answer is correct

Language skill refers to the ability to use a language properly. In other words, the learner should be fully proficient in all the four skills of the language: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Key Points

  • Listening (with understanding), speaking, reading and writing are the four fundamental skills.
  • Listening and speaking are primary skills, while reading and writing are secondary skills. Reading and writing are also called reinforcement skills.
  • They reinforce what has been learnt through understanding and speaking. In fact, understanding and speaking speed up the reading process. Writing should be introduced after reading.

Thus, it is concluded that reading and writing pair constitutes the reinforcement skills.

Question 149

Direction: Answer the following questions by selecting the most appropriate option.

Students of Class IV can recognize flawed usage or sentence construction when the teacher

  1. AOption (a)

    tells them something is wrong

  2. BOption (b)

    gives alternatives as possible corrections

  3. COption (c)

    lets them find the corrections

  4. DOption (d)

    focuses on certain surface errors

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

gives alternatives as possible corrections

Why this answer is correct

Children learn various lessons of learning the English language throughout their school life. At various stages/standards, children learn different difficulty levels of English.

Key Points

  • For the students of class IV learning English, their learning outcomes include, reciting poems correctly, being responsive to simple announcements, they having a simple knowledge of correct punctuations in writing.
  • The teacher can provide possible alternative corrections for the sentence as the students can get better insight about the words, their usage and also learn about the flaws in the wrong sentence.

Hint

  • The teacher does not have to tell them something is wrong as it will not help them in learning the correct usage.
  • The teacher has to guide a little to the students and cannot just let them find the corrections on their own as it is not their level yet, they need guidance.
  • Students of Class IV cannot recognize flawed usage or sentence construction when the teacher focuses on certain surface errors such as grammatical errors as they are learning only to know the basics of sentences and their usage in daily life and thus do not have that knowledge.

Thus, it is concluded that Students of Class IV can recognize flawed usage or sentence construction when the teacher gives alternatives as possible corrections.

Question 150

The teacher and student/s discuss a topic and the former starts the conversation by asking a question, then the student/s respond by giving examples and explanations. The speaking assessment here is to grade how well students

Why this answer is correct

Key Points

  • Language skills are necessary for effective communication in any environment and to interact with others.
  • It allows an individual to comprehend and produce language for proper and effective interpersonal communication.
  • The four basic language skills are listening-speaking-reading-writing.
  • Speaking refers to the cognitive and linguistic skill which helps the individual to communicate thought naturally or without effort.
  • Listening refers to cognitive and linguistic skill which helps the individual to understand the thought of the speaker.
  • Both listening and speaking skills are necessary to process information and respond appropriately.
  • The whole point of language learning is to make the child a critical observer and thoughtful speaker.

Thus, when the teacher asks questions based on a discussion she/he is trying to grade the students on how well students process information and respond appropriately.

Confusion Points

  • Activities that promote creative expression allow the participants to speak without/ with minimal cues.
  • It doesn't follow the question-answer method with only one correct answer.
  • The activities in which students are involved in responding in an appropriate tone, fluently and accurately are carried on by the teachers at a later stage when the learners know what and how they want to express themselves.
  • It involves teachers correcting the learners at each step.
