IERT Entrance Exam 2025 – Complete Guide for Diploma Engineering Aspirants in UP

What is IERT?

The Institute of Engineering and Rural Technology (IERT), Prayagraj (formerly Allahabad) is one of Uttar Pradesh's oldest and most reputed polytechnic institutions, established in 1906. IERT conducts its own institution-specific entrance examination for admission to 3-year diploma engineering programmes — separate from the statewide JEECUP polytechnic entrance.

The IERT entrance exam tests candidates in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry at the Class 10 level. It is a pen-and-paper (offline) test with no negative marking, giving every aspirant a fair chance to attempt all 75 questions.

Eligibility Criteria

CriterionRequirement
EducationPassed Class 10 (High School) with Science and Mathematics from a recognised board
Minimum Marks35% aggregate (SC/ST may get relaxation per IERT norms)
Age LimitNo general upper age limit (confirm with official notification)
NationalityIndian citizen; UP domicile candidates get preference in seat allotment

Exam Pattern

SectionQuestionsMarksApprox. Duration
Mathematics2525~60 min
Physics2525~60 min
Chemistry2525~60 min
Total7575~3 hours
  • Mode: Offline (OMR-based pen-and-paper)
  • Marking: +1 mark for every correct answer
  • Negative Marking: None
  • Language: Hindi and English bilingual paper

Tip: With no negative marking, always attempt every question — a blank carries the same score as a wrong answer (0), so there's nothing to lose.

Preparation Strategy

  1. Master NCERT Class 9 & 10 first: IERT questions are drawn almost entirely from this level. Complete all exercises and examples before touching additional material.
  2. Practice previous year papers (2018–2022): Available free on YourMockTest — identify repeat topics, question patterns, and time yourself on each section.
  3. No negative marking = attempt everything: Solve easy questions first in each section, then return to difficult ones. Leave no question blank.
  4. Physics — formulae sheets: Create a single A4 page of all key Physics formulae (Newton's laws, Ohm's law, lens formula, etc.) and revise it daily in the last two weeks.
  5. Chemistry — memorise trends: Periodic table trends (electronegativity, atomic radius, ionisation energy) and reactivity series are frequently tested. Flash cards work well here.
  6. Maths — speed over depth: Focus on quick calculation techniques for Algebra and Mensuration. Practise Trigonometry identities until they're automatic.
  7. Two full mock tests per week: Use full 3-hour simulated sessions to build stamina and benchmark your readiness.
