View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

Four

Why this answer is correct

Here, given files are G, J, K, N, R, S, T and U.

  1. Not more than three files placed after the file U.

  2. File U is placed before the file G.

  3. Only two files are placed after the file J.

Case – 1FilesUJG
Case – 2FilesUJG
Case – 3FilesJUG

  2. File N is placed before the file K which is placed immediately before file R. Therefore, case 2 and case 3 are eliminated.

Case – 1FilesNKRUJG

  1. File T is placed before the file J but after the file K.

  2. File R is placed before the files G and S. Hence, the final arrangement is as follows

FilesNKRTUJGS

Hence, four files are placed after the file T.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

The Minister was visibly upset when he heard the sad news of his debacle in the election.

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is 'The Minister was visibly upset when he heard the sad news of his debacle in the election' i.e. this sentence is grammatically and contextually correct.

Key Points

  • Let us explore the grammatical errors in the sentences:
  • In Option 1, the use of the singular form of the verb 'has' is incorrect.
  • We know that when two singular nouns are joined by 'and' referring to two different persons the pronoun used for them should be 'plural'. (जब दो एकवचन संज्ञाएँ 'and' से जुड़ती हैं तो दो अलग-अलग व्यक्तियों के लिए प्रयुक्त सर्वनाम 'बहुवचन' होना चाहिए)
  • Therefore, the plural form of the verb 'have' should be used in place of the singular form of the verb 'has'.
  • Correct Sentence: The Prime Minister and the Chief Minister have expressed grief over the loss of lives due to the bus accident in Jammu and Kashmir.
  • In Option 2, the use of the article 'a' is incorrect.
  • We use the article 'a' before a consonant sound and we use the article 'an' before a vowel sound (here, expensive). (व्यंजन ध्वनि से पहले आर्टिकल 'a' और स्वर ध्वनि से पहले आर्टिकल 'an' का इस्तेमाल करते हैं)
  • Therefore, the article 'an' should be used in place of the article 'a'.
  • Correct Sentence: Going to court can be an expensive, time-consuming, and gut-wrenching experience that is best avoided.
  • In Option 4, the use of the plural form of the noun 'hairs' is incorrect.
  • We know that some nouns are generally uncountable nouns, and 'Hair' is one of them. (कुछ संज्ञाएं आम तौर पर असंख्य संज्ञाएं होती हैं, और 'हेयर' उनमें से एक है)
  • Uncountable nouns are used with a singular verb. (असंख्य संज्ञाओं का प्रयोग एकवचन क्रिया के साथ किया जाता है)
  • Therefore, the singular form of the noun 'hair' should be used in place of the plural form of the noun 'hairs'.
  • Correct Sentence: He was neither ancient nor ugly, with familiar dark eyes and hair and roughly hewn features.

Hence, the correct answer is option 3.

    All are correct.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

Improving the physical educational system, which is one of the worst in the world, requires commitment from the country’s politicians.

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is 'Improving the physical educational system, which is one of the worst in the world, requires commitment from the country’s politicians' i.e. this sentence is grammatically and contextually correct.

Key Points

  • Let us explore the grammatical errors in the sentences:
  • In Option 1, the use of the present tense form of the verb 'have' in the if-clause is incorrect.
  • The given sentence is the third conditional sentence explaining that present circumstances would be different if something different had happened in the past. (दिया गया वाक्य third conditional वाक्य है जो यह समझाता है कि यदि अतीत में कुछ अलग हुआ होता तो वर्तमान परिस्थितियाँ अलग होतीं)
  • When using the third conditional, we use the past perfect i.e. had + past participle (here, taken) in the if-clause and the modal auxiliary (would, could, should, etc.) + have + past participle (here, missed) in the main clause.
  • Therefore, the past tense form of the verb 'had' should be used in place of the present tense form of the verb 'have'.
  • Correct Sentence: If we had taken a taxi, we wouldn't have missed the plane.
  • In Option 3, the use of the adverb 'vividly' is incorrect.
  • In the given sentence, 'vividly' is an adverb, which cannot modify a noun (here, 'memories'). (दिए गए वाक्य में, 'vividly' एक क्रिया विशेषण है, जो एक संज्ञा को संशोधित नहीं कर सकता है)
  • Adjectives usually come before the noun that they modify. (विशेषण आमतौर पर उस संज्ञा से पहले आते हैं जिसे वे संशोधित करते हैं)
  • Therefore, the adjective 'vivid' should be used in place of the adverb 'vividly'.
  • Correct Sentence: People of my generation who lived through World War II have vivid memories of confusion and incompetence.
  • In Option 4, the use of the plural form of the noun 'alumni' is incorrect.
  • We know that 'alumni' is the plural form for a group of male graduates and for a group of male and female graduates. ('alumni' पुरुष स्नातकों के समूह और पुरुष और महिला स्नातकों के समूह के लिए बहुवचन रूप है)
  • 'Alumnus' refers specifically to a singular male graduate. ('Alumnus' विशेष रूप से एक एकल पुरुष स्नातक को संदर्भित करता है)
  • Therefore, the singular form of the noun 'alumnus' should be used in place of the plural form of the noun 'alumni'.
  • Correct Sentence: John has also been honored by the University of Chicago as a distinguished alumnus in 2002.

Hence, the correct answer is option 2.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

He told me how scared he was of being on his own.

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is- 'He told me how scared he was of being on his own.'

Key Points

  • Option 1 is incorrect.
  • In English grammar, the habitual present is a verb in the present tense used to indicate an action that occurs regularly or repeatedly.
  • It's also known as the present habitual.
  • "Movement of buses" is an action that occurs regularly or repeatedly, so it must be in the Simple Present Tense.
  • Structure: Subject + V1(s/es) + Object
  • So, we have to replace "has left" with "leaves" to make it grammatically correct.
  • Correct Sentence: The last bus leaves at midnight every day.
  • Option 2 is correct.
  • The meaning of the phrase "on his own" is by or through one's individual efforts or means.
  • Example: He had to finish designing the website on his own after many of our workers were laid off.
  • The sentence is grammatically and contextually correct.
  • Option 3 is incorrect.
  • We use the Present Perfect Continuous tense to talk about the action that started in the past and is continuing now.
  • This is often used with 'for' or 'since'.
  • Example: We've been studying since 9 o'clock. (We're still studying now.)
  • So, we have to replace "am waiting" with "have been waiting" to make it grammatically correct.
  • Correct Sentence: Where is he? I have been waiting for him since three o'clock!
  • Option 4 is incorrect.
  • The given sentence is a negative sentence and in the Present Tense.
  • The present simple, in its negative form, has this structure: Subject + do/does + not + verb + object
  • Example: He does not go there.
  • So, we need a base form of the verb "lose."
  • So, we have to replace "lost" with "lose" to make it grammatically correct.
  • Correct Sentence: You should practice so that you do not lose the match.
  • So, the correct answer is Option 2.

Correct sentence: He told me how scared he was of being on his own.

Read the passage given below and then answer the questions given below the passage.

The world will be transformed. By 2050, we will be driving electric cars and flying in aircraft running on synthetic fuels produced through solar and wind energy. New energy-efficient technologies, most likely harnessing artificial intelligence, will dominate nearly all human activities from farming to heavy industry. The fossil fuel industry will be in the final stages of a terminal decline. Nuclear fusion and other new energy sources may have become widespread. Perhaps our planet will even be orbited by massive solar arrays capturing cosmic energy from sunlight and generating seemingly endless energy for all our needs.

That is one possible future for humanity. It’s an optimistic view of how radical changes to energy production might help us slow or avoid the worst outcomes of global warming. In a report from 1965, scientists from the US government warned that our ongoing use of fossil fuels would cause global warming with potentially disastrous consequences for Earth’s climate. The report, one of the first government-produced documents to predict a major crisis caused by humanity’s large-scale activities, noted that the likely consequences would include higher global temperatures, the melting of the ice caps and rising sea levels. ‘Through his worldwide industrial civilisation,’ the report concluded, ‘Man is unwittingly conducting a vast geophysical experiment’ – an experiment with a highly uncertain outcome, but clear and important risks for life on Earth.

Since then, we’ve dithered and doubted and argued about what to do, but still have not managed to take serious action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which continue to rise. Governments around the planet have promised to phase out emissions in the coming decades and transition to ‘green energy’. But global temperatures may be rising faster than we expected: some climate scientists worry that rapid rises could create new problems and positive feedback loops that may accelerate climate destabilisation and make parts of the world uninhabitable long before a hoped-for transition is possible.

Despite this bleak vision of the future, there are reasons for optimists to hope due to progress on cleaner sources of renewable energy, especially solar power. Around 2010, solar energy generation accounted for less than 1 per cent of the electricity generated by humanity. But experts believe that, by 2027, due to falling costs, better technology and exponential growth in new installations, solar power will become the largest global energy source for producing electricity. If progress on renewables continues, we might find a way to resolve the warming problem linked to greenhouse gas emissions. By 2050, large-scale societal and ecological changes might have helped us avoid the worst consequences of our extensive use of fossil fuels.

Question 71

A boat takes 3 hours more to travel 300 km upstream than to travel 280 km downstream. If the speed of the current is 14.28% of the speed of the boat, what is the speed of the boat in still water?

  1. AOption (a)

    10 km/hr

  2. BOption (b)

    15 km/hr

  3. COption (c)

    35 km/hr

  4. DOption (d)

    27 km/hr

  5. EOption (e)

    None of these

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

35 km/hr

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Speed of Current (v) = 14.28% of Boat Speed (u) ⇒ v = (1/7) × u.

Ratio of u : v = 7 : 1. Let u = 7x and v = x.

Upstream speed (u−v) = 6x and Downstream speed (u+v) = 8x.

Time difference: 300/(6x) − 280/(8x) = 3 ⇒ 50/x − 35/x = 3 ⇒ 15/x = 3 ⇒ x = 5.

Boat speed in still water = 7x = 7 × 5 = 35 km/hr.

∴ The correct answer is 35 km/hr.

Alternate Method

Given: Upstream distance = 300 km, Downstream distance = 280 km, Time diff = 3 hrs.

Formula: Speed Upstream = u − v; Speed Downstream = u + v; Time = Distance ÷ Speed.

⇒ v = 14.28% of u = (1/7)u

⇒ Let u = 7x, then v = x

⇒ Upstream speed (u−v) = 6x

⇒ Downstream speed (u+v) = 8x

⇒ (300 / 6x) − (280 / 8x) = 3

⇒ 50/x − 35/x = 3

⇒ 15/x = 3 ⇒ x = 5

⇒ Speed of boat in still water = 7 × 5 = 35 km/hr

∴ The correct answer is 35 km/hr.

Additional Information

Relative Speed in Water

Downstream speed (D) = u + v and Upstream speed (U) = u − v, where u is boat speed and v is stream speed.

Calculating Component Speeds

Speed of boat in still water u = (D + U) ÷ 2 and Speed of current v = (D − U) ÷ 2.

Percentage to Fraction Conversion

14.28% is approximately equal to 1/7. This is a common fraction used in competitive exams for 1/7, 2/7 (28.56%), etc.

Question 72

    Rs. 2450

  5. EOption (e)

    Rs. 2550

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

Rs. 2250

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Profit ratio is the product of investment and time period.

Total profit = 3800 and B's share = 500. Ratio of B's profit to total profit = 500 ÷ 3800 = 5 ÷ 38.

B's weighted investment = (x + 1000) × 5. Total weighted investment = 5x + 5(x + 1000) + 8000 × 12.

Using Ratio-Unitary: [5(x + 1000)] ÷ [10x + 5000 + 96000] = 5 ÷ 38.

Solving: 38(x + 1000) = 10x + 101000 ⇒ 38x + 38000 = 10x + 101000 ⇒ 28x = 63000.

∴ The correct answer is Rs. 2250.

Alternate Method

Given → Investment of A = x, Investment of B = x + 1000, Investment of C = 8000. Time → tA = 5, tB = 5, tC = 12. Formulas: Profit Ratio = (I1 × T1) : (I2 × T2) : (I3 × T3).

Steps: ⇒ Profit Share Ratio = (x × 5) : ((x + 1000) × 5) : (8000 × 12) ⇒ Profit Share Ratio = 5x : (5x + 5000) : 96000 ⇒ Total Profit Units = 5x + 5x + 5000 + 96000 = 10x + 101000 ⇒ (B's Profit) / (Total Profit) = (5x + 5000) / (10x + 101000) = 500 / 3800 ⇒ (5x + 5000) / (10x + 101000) = 5 / 38 ⇒ Divide numerator by 5: (x + 1000) / (10x + 101000) = 1 / 38 ⇒ 38x + 38000 = 10x + 101000 ⇒ 28x = 63000 ⇒ x = 63000 ÷ 28 = 2250

∴ The correct answer is Rs. 2250.

Additional Information

Partnership Basics

When time periods are different, the profit is distributed in the ratio of capital × time. This is known as compound partnership.

Ratio Proportionality

If Profit Ratio is P1:P2 and Capital Ratio is C1:C2, then the Time Ratio T1:T2 = (P1/C1) : (P2/C2).

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Net multiplier after 3 years depreciation at 10% = (0.9)3 = 0.729.

Value after 3 years = 10,000 × 0.729 = Rs. 7,290.

Final Selling Price (SP) = 7,290 − 270 = Rs. 7,020.

Total Loss = CP − SP = 10,000 − 7,020 = Rs. 2,980.

Total Loss % = (2,980 ÷ 10,000) × 100 = 29.8%.

∴ The correct answer is 29.8%.

Alternate Method

Given → Initial Cost Price (CP) = Rs. 10,000; Depreciation Rate = 10% per year; Time = 3 years; Additional Discount = Rs. 270. Formulas: Final Value = P × (1 − R÷100)n | Total Loss = CP − Final SP | Loss% = (Total Loss ÷ CP) × 100.

⇒ Value after 1st year = 10,000 − 10% of 10,000 = Rs. 9,000. ⇒ Value after 2nd year = 9,000 − 10% of 9,000 = Rs. 8,100. ⇒ Value after 3rd year = 8,100 − 10% of 8,100 = Rs. 7,290. ⇒ Selling Price (SP) after Rs. 270 discount = 7,290 − 270 = Rs. 7,020. ⇒ Total Loss Amount = 10,000 − 7,020 = Rs. 2,980. ⇒ Total Loss % = (2,980 ÷ 10,000) × 100 = 29.8%.

∴ The correct answer is 29.8%.

Additional Information

Depreciation

Depreciation is the reduction in the value of an asset over time. Formula: A = P(1 − R/100)n.

Successive Percentage Decrease

Three successive decreases of 10% result in a net decrease of [1 − (0.9 × 0.9 × 0.9)] × 100 = 27.1%.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

42 years

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Total present age of P, Q, and R = 61 + (3 × 12) = 97 years.

Let P = 2x, Q = 3x, then R = 2x − 8.

Sum: 2x + 3x + (2x − 8) = 97 → 7x = 105 → x = 15.

P's age = 2 × 15 = 30 years.

Ratio P : S = 5 : 7 → S = (30 ÷ 5) × 7 = 42 years.

∴ The correct answer is 42 years.

Alternate Method

Given: Sum of ages (P+Q+R) 12 years ago = 61 years; P:Q = 2:3; P = R + 8; P:S = 5:7.

⇒ Present sum of P, Q, and R = 61 + (12 × 3) = 97 years.

⇒ Let Present age of P = 2x and Q = 3x.

⇒ Since P is 8 years older than R, R = P − 8 = 2x − 8.

⇒ 2x + 3x + (2x − 8) = 97

⇒ 7x − 8 = 97

⇒ 7x = 105

⇒ x = 15

⇒ Present age of P = 2 × 15 = 30 years.

⇒ Given Ratio P : S = 5 : 7

⇒ 5 units = 30 years

⇒ 1 unit = 6 years

⇒ Present age of S = 7 × 6 = 42 years.

∴ The correct answer is 42 years.

Additional Information

Age Sum Calculation

When moving "n" years forward or backward for a group of "k" people, the total sum changes by (n × k) years.

Ratio Balancing

  5. EOption (e)

    7/29

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (a)A.

18/95

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Ratio of White balls to Total balls = 1 : 4.

Total balls = 6 + y + (y + 4) = 10 + 2y. Since y / (10 + 2y) = 1/4 ⇒ 4y = 10 + 2y ⇒ 2y = 10 ⇒ y = 5.

Black balls = y + 4 = 9; Total balls = 10 + 2(5) = 20.

Probability (Both Black) = (9 × 8) / (20 × 19) = 18 / 95.

∴ The correct answer is 18/95.

Alternate Method

Given: Blue = 6, White = y, Black = y + 4.

Formula Used: Probability = (Favorable Outcomes) ÷ (Total Outcomes)

⇒ Total balls = 6 + y + y + 4 = 10 + 2y

⇒ P(White) = y / (10 + 2y) = 1/4

⇒ 4y = 10 + 2y ⇒ 2y = 10 ⇒ y = 5

⇒ Number of Black balls = 5 + 4 = 9

⇒ Total number of balls = 10 + 2(5) = 20

⇒ P(Both Black) = 9C2 / 20C2

⇒ P(Both Black) = (9 × 8 / 2) / (20 × 19 / 2) = 36 / 190

⇒ P(Both Black) = 18 / 95

∴ The correct answer is 18/95.

Additional Information

Combinations Formula

For selecting r items from n, use nCr = n! / [r!(n−r)!]. For r=2, it simplifies to n(n−1)/2.

Simultaneous vs. Sequential Draw

Drawing two balls simultaneously is equivalent to drawing them without replacement one after another.

Complementary Probability

P(A) + P(not A) = 1. This is useful for 'at least' or 'at most' probability questions.

Directions: Study the following information carefully and answer the questions.

Following information shows the data regarding number of runs scored by A, B, C and D in Test, ODI and T20 matches.

The runs scored by C in T20 matches are 40 more than one-third of the runs scored by A in Test matches. The average of the total runs scored by A is 230, and the runs scored by him in ODIs are 55% of the runs scored in Test matches. In ODIs, D scored 42 runs fewer than C, while B scored exactly one-third of the runs scored by A, and the total sum of runs scored by B, C, and D in ODIs is 471. In Test matches, D scored 4 times the runs he scored in ODIs, while C scored 8 more runs than D in the same format. In T20 matches, C and D scored 180 and 95 runs respectively. The runs scored by C in Test matches are twice the runs scored by B in the same format. The runs scored by B in T20 matches are one-seventh of the runs scored by him in ODIs.

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

210:53

Why this answer is correct

General Solution:

Let the runs scored by A in Test matches = x

Then:

ODIs = 55% of x = 0.55x

T20s = Total of A’s average = 230 × 3 = 690

So, A's T20 runs = 690 − (x + 0.55x) = 690 − 1.55x

C's T20 runs = 40 more than one-third of A’s Test runs:

C's T20 = (1/3) × x + 40

We're told:

C and D scored 180 and 95 runs respectively in T20

So:

C's T20 = 180 = (1/3)x + 40

⇒ (1/3)x = 140 ⇒ x = 420

Now that we know x = 420, substitute values for A:

A's Test = 420

A's ODI = 0.55 × 420 = 231

A's T20 = 690 − (420 + 231) = 39

ODI data:

C's ODI = c

D's ODI = c − 42

B's ODI = (1/3) × A ODI = (1/3) × 231 = 77

Total ODI by B, C, D = 471

⇒ 77 + c + (c − 42) = 471

⇒ 2c + 35 = 471 ⇒ 2c = 436 ⇒ c = 218

So:

C's ODI = 218

D's ODI = 176

B's ODI = 77

Test Match Data:

D's Test = 4 × D ODI = 4 × 176 = 704

C's Test = D's Test + 8 = 712

Also:

C's Test = 2 × B's Test ⇒ B's Test = 712 / 2 = 356

T20 Data:

C's T20 = 180 (already given)

D's T20 = 95

B's T20 = (1/7) × B ODI = (1/7) × 77 = 11

Thus,

PlayerTestODIT20
A42023139
B3567711
C712218180
D70417695

Calculations:

From the general solution:

A's Test runs = 420

B's T20 runs = 11

D's T20 runs = 95

B + D T20 runs = 11 + 95 = 106

Required Ratio:

Ratio = A's Test : (B + D)'s T20 = 420 : 106 = 210:53

Thus, the correct answer is 210:53.

243

Why this answer is correct

General Solution:

Let the runs scored by A in Test matches = x

Then:

ODIs = 55% of x = 0.55x

T20s = Total of A’s average = 230 × 3 = 690

So, A's T20 runs = 690 − (x + 0.55x) = 690 − 1.55x

C's T20 runs = 40 more than one-third of A’s Test runs:

C's T20 = (1/3) × x + 40

We're told:

C and D scored 180 and 95 runs respectively in T20

So:

C's T20 = 180 = (1/3)x + 40

⇒ (1/3)x = 140 ⇒ x = 420

Now that we know x = 420, substitute values for A:

A's Test = 420

A's ODI = 0.55 × 420 = 231

A's T20 = 690 − (420 + 231) = 39

ODI data:

C's ODI = c

D's ODI = c − 42

B's ODI = (1/3) × A ODI = (1/3) × 231 = 77

Total ODI by B, C, D = 471

⇒ 77 + c + (c − 42) = 471

⇒ 2c + 35 = 471 ⇒ 2c = 436 ⇒ c = 218

So:

C's ODI = 218

D's ODI = 176

B's ODI = 77

Test Match Data:

D's Test = 4 × D ODI = 4 × 176 = 704

C's Test = D's Test + 8 = 712

Also:

C's Test = 2 × B's Test ⇒ B's Test = 712 / 2 = 356

T20 Data:

C's T20 = 180 (already given)

D's T20 = 95

B's T20 = (1/7) × B ODI = (1/7) × 77 = 11

Thus,

PlayerTestODIT20

Calculations:

Original Runs Scored by A:

Test = 420

ODI = 231

T20 = 39

New T20 Runs (if doubled):

New T20 = 39 × 2 = 78

New Total Runs:

Total = 420 (Test) + 231 (ODI) + 78 (New T20) = 729

New average = 729 ÷ 3 = 243

Thus, the correct answer is 243.

67.9%

Why this answer is correct

General Solution:

Let the runs scored by A in Test matches = x

C's Test runs = 712

A's T20 runs = 39

B's T20 runs = 11

Sum of A and B T20 runs = 39 + 11 = 50

Difference = 712 − 50 = 662

Calculate total runs by D:

D's Test runs = 704

D's ODI runs = 176

D's T20 runs = 95

ODIs = 55% of x = 0.55x

T20s = Total of A’s average = 230 × 3 = 690

So, A's T20 runs = 690 − (x + 0.55x) = 690 − 1.55x

C's T20 runs = 40 more than one-third of A’s Test runs:

Why this answer is correct

General Solution:

Let the runs scored by A in Test matches = x

T20s = Total of A’s average = 230 × 3 = 690

So, A's T20 runs = 690 − (x + 0.55x) = 690 − 1.55x

Now that we know x = 420, substitute values for A:

A's Test = 420

A's ODI = 0.55 × 420 = 231

A's T20 = 690 − (420 + 231) = 39

C new ODI = 218 + 132 = 350

A ODI = 0 (since it’s fully redistributed)

T20s = Total of A’s average = 230 × 3 = 690

So, A's T20 runs = 690 − (x + 0.55x) = 690 − 1.55x

Total ODI by B, C, D = 471

⇒ 77 + c + (c − 42) = 471

⇒ 2c + 35 = 471 ⇒ 2c = 436 ⇒ c = 218

So:

C's ODI = 218

D's ODI = 176

B's ODI = 77

Test Match Data:

D's Test = 4 × D ODI = 4 × 176 = 704

C's Test = D's Test + 8 = 712

Also:

C's Test = 2 × B's Test ⇒ B's Test = 712 / 2 = 356

T20 Data:

C's T20 = 180 (already given)

D's T20 = 95

B's T20 = (1/7) × B ODI = (1/7) × 77 = 11

Thus,

PlayerTestODIT20
A42023139
B3567711
C712218180
D70417695

Calculations:

A's Original Total:

Test: 420

ODI: 231

T20: 39

Total A = 420 + 231 + 39 = 690

B's Original Total:

Test: 356

ODI: 77

T20: 11

Total B = 356 + 77 + 11 = 444

Adjustments:

B’s Disqualified Runs:

25% of 444 =

→ 444 × (25/100) = 111

→ New B total = 444 − 111 = 333

A gets 20% of D’s T20 runs added:

→ D’s T20 = 95

→ 20% of 95 = 19

→ New A total = 690 + 19 = 709

New Total = 333 + 709 = 1042

Thus, the correct answer is 1042.

Question 87

Priya and Rahul started a project together, and after 'k' days, Priya left and Rahul finished the remaining project in 8 days. The time taken by Rahul and Priya alone to complete the whole project are in the ratio 2:1 respectively. If Rahul can complete the entire project in 20 days, then calculate the value of 'k'.

  1. AOption (a)

    3 days

  2. BOption (b)

    4 days

  3. COption (c)

    5 days

  4. DOption (d)

    6 days

  5. EOption (e)

    7 days

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

4 days

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Ratio of Time for Rahul and Priya = 2 : 1

Ratio of Efficiency (Inverse of time) = 1 : 2

Total work = Rahul efficiency × Rahul days = 1 × 20 = 20 units

Work done by Rahul in last 8 days = 8 × 1 = 8 units

Work done by both in k days = 20 − 8 = 12 units

k = 12 ÷ (1 + 2) = 4 days

∴ The correct answer is 4 days.

Alternate Method

Given: Time taken by Rahul = 20 days. Ratio of time (Rahul : Priya) = 2 : 1.

Formula Used: Total Work = Efficiency × Time; Work Done = (Combined Efficiency) × Time

PersonDaysTotal WorkEfficiency
Rahul202020 ÷ 20 = 1
Priya1020 ÷ 10 = 2

⇒ Time for Priya = 20 × (1/2) = 10 days.

⇒ Total work (LCM of 20, 10) = 20 units.

⇒ Rahul finished the remaining work in 8 days.

⇒ Work done by Rahul alone = 8 × 1 = 8 units.

⇒ Remaining work done by Priya and Rahul together = 20 − 8 = 12 units.

⇒ Combined efficiency = 1 + 2 = 3 units/day.

⇒ k = 12 ÷ 3 = 4 days.

∴ The correct answer is 4 days.

Additional Information

Efficiency and Time Relationship

Efficiency is inversely proportional to the time taken to complete a task. If time ratio is a:b, efficiency ratio is b:a.

Work and Wages

Wages are generally distributed in the ratio of the work done by each individual, which is (Efficiency × Time).

Alternate Day Work

In problems where people work on alternate days, find the work done in one complete cycle (e.g., 2 days) and then calculate total time.

Question 88

Three times the length of a rectangle is equal to seven times its breadth. The area of the rectangle is 2352 sq. cm. What is the area of a square whose perimeter is equal to that of the rectangle?

  1. AOption (a)

    2500 sq. cm

  2. BOption (b)

    3025 sq. cm

  3. COption (c)

    2800 sq. cm

  4. DOption (d)

    3600 sq. cm

  5. EOption (e)

    None of these

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

2800 sq. cm

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Ratio of Length (L) to Breadth (B) is 7 : 3.

Product of ratios = 7 × 3 = 21 units2. Given Area = 2352 cm2.

1 unit2 = 2352 ÷ 21 = 112 ⇒ 1 unit = √112 = 4√7.

Perimeter = 2(7 + 3) units = 20 units = 20 × 4√7 = 80√7 cm.

Square side = Perimeter ÷ 4 = 20√7 cm. Square Area = (20√7)2 = 400 × 7 = 2800 cm2.

∴ The correct answer is 2800 sq. cm.

Alternate Method

Given: 3 × L = 7 × B ⇒ L = 7x, B = 3x. Area = 2352 sq. cm.

Formula: Area = L × B | Perimeter = 2(L + B) | Square Area = (Perimeter/4)2

⇒ 7x × 3x = 2352

⇒ 21x2 = 2352

⇒ x2 = 112 ⇒ x = √112 = 4√7

⇒ Perimeter of Rectangle = 2(7x + 3x) = 20x = 20 × 4√7 = 80√7 cm

⇒ Side of Square (a) = Perimeter ÷ 4 = 80√7 ÷ 4 = 20√7 cm

⇒ Area of Square = a2 = (20√7)2 = 400 × 7 = 2800 sq. cm

∴ The correct answer is 2800 sq. cm.

Additional Information

Rectangle Properties

Area = Length × Breadth. Perimeter = 2 × (Length + Breadth). Diagonal = √(L2 + B2).

Square Properties

Area = side2. Perimeter = 4 × side. For a fixed perimeter, a square has the maximum area among all rectangles.

Ratio Application in Geometry

When dimensions are in ratio m:n, Area is proportional to (m×n) and Perimeter is proportional to (m+n).

Question 89

Direction: In the given question, two equations numbered l and II are given. Solve both equations and mark the appropriate answer.

I. x² − 22x + 105 = 0

II. y² − 20y + 96 = 0

  1. AOption (a)

    x > y

  2. BOption (b)

    x < y

  3. COption (c)

    x ≤ y

  4. DOption (d)

    x ≥ y

  5. EOption (e)

x = y or Relation cannot be determined

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (e)E.

x = y or Relation cannot be determined

Why this answer is correct

Equation I: x² − 22x + 105 = 0

Find two numbers whose product = 105 and sum = 22:

⇒ Factors: (x − 15)(x − 7) = 0

⇒ x = 15, 7

Equation II: y² − 20y + 96 = 0

Find two numbers whose product = 96 and sum = 20:

⇒ Factors: (y − 12)(y − 8) = 0

⇒ y = 12, 8

Compare roots:

x₁ = 15 vs y₁ = 12 ⇒ x > y

x₂ = 7 vs y₂ = 8 ⇒ x < y

Since one x > y and one x < y ⇒ Relationship cannot be established

Thus, the correct answer is x = y or Relationship cannot be established.

Question 90

Direction: In the given question, two equations numbered l and II are given. Solve both equations and mark the appropriate answer.

I. 4x² − 25 = 0

II. y² − 10y + 25 = 0

  1. AOption (a)

    x ≥ y

  2. BOption (b)

    x ≤ y

  3. COption (c)

  4. DOption (d)

x = y or Relation cannot be determined

  5. EOption (e)

    x > y

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

x < y

Why this answer is correct

Equation I: 4x² − 25 = 0

⇒ 4x² = 25 ⇒ x² = 25⁄4 ⇒ x = ±5⁄2

Equation II: y² − 10y + 25 = 0

⇒ (y − 5)² = 0 ⇒ y = 5

Possible x values: −2.5 and 2.5

y = 5

Both −2.5 < 5 and 2.5 < 5 ⇒ in every case x < y

Thus, the correct answer is x < y.

Question 91

Direction: In the given question, two equations numbered l and II are given. Solve both equations and mark the appropriate answer.

I. x² − 11x + 24 = 0

II. y² + 6y − 135 = 0

  1. AOption (a)

    x ≥ y

  2. BOption (b)

    x < y

  3. COption (c)

  4. DOption (d)

x = y or Relation cannot be determined

  5. EOption (e)

    x > y

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (d)D.

x = y or Relation cannot be determined

Why this answer is correct

Equation I: x² − 11x + 24 = 0

Factor: Find two numbers that multiply to 24 and add up to −11

⇒ (x − 3)(x − 8) = 0

⇒ x = 3, 8

Equation II: y² + 6y − 135 = 0

Factor: Find two numbers that multiply to −135 and add up to 6

⇒ (y + 15)(y − 9) = 0

⇒ y = −15, 9

Now compare:

x = 3, 8

y = −15, 9

Compare each x with both y values:

3 < 9 and 3 > −15

8 < 9 and 8 > −15

So: x is less than y in one case and greater in another → No definite relation

Thus, the correct answer is x = y or Relationship cannot be established.

Question 92

Direction: In the given question, two equations numbered l and II are given. Solve both equations and mark the appropriate answer.

I. x² − 35x + 294 = 0

II. y² − 38y + 345 = 0

  1. AOption (a)

    x > y

  2. BOption (b)

    x ≥ y

  3. COption (c)

  4. DOption (d)

    x ≤ y

  5. EOption (e)

x = y or Relation cannot be determined

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (e)E.

x = y or Relation cannot be determined

Why this answer is correct

Equation I: x² − 35x + 294 = 0

⇒ Discriminant = 35² − 4×294 = 1225 − 1176 = 49

⇒ Roots: x = [35 ± 7] ÷ 2 ⇒ x = 21 or 14

Equation II: y² − 38y + 345 = 0

⇒ Discriminant = 38² − 4×345 = 1444 − 1380 = 64

⇒ Roots: y = [38 ± 8] ÷ 2 ⇒ y = 23 or 15

Possible values:

x ∈ {14, 21}

y ∈ {15, 23}

Since sometimes x < y (e.g. 14 < 15) and sometimes x > y (e.g. 21 > 15), the relationship between x and y cannot be uniquely determined.

Thus, the correct answer is x = y or relationship cannot be established.

Question 93

Direction: In the given question, two equations numbered l and II are given. Solve both equations and mark the appropriate answer.

I. 12x² + 7x − 12 = 0

II. 8y² − 18y + 9 = 0

  1. AOption (a)

    x > y

  2. BOption (b)

x = y or Relation cannot be determined

  3. COption (c)

    x < y

  4. DOption (d)

    x ≥ y

  5. EOption (e)

    x ≤ y

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (e)E.

x ≤ y

Why this answer is correct

Equation I: 12x² + 7x − 12 = 0

⇒ Discriminant = 7² − 4 × 12 × (−12) = 49 + 576 = 625, √625 = 25

⇒ x = [−7 ± 25] ÷ (2 × 12) = [−7 ± 25] ÷ 24

x₁ = (18) ÷ 24 = 3/4 = 0.75

x₂ = (−32) ÷ 24 = −4/3 ≈ −1.333

Equation II: 8y² − 18y + 9 = 0

⇒ Discriminant = (−18)² − 4 × 8 × 9 = 324 − 288 = 36, √36 = 6

⇒ y = [18 ± 6] ÷ (2 × 8) = [18 ± 6] ÷ 16

y₁ = 24 ÷ 16 = 3/2 = 1.5

y₂ = 12 ÷ 16 = 3/4 = 0.75

Comparison of roots:

x₂ = −1.333 < y₂ = 0.75

x₁ = 0.75 = y₂ = 0.75

x₁ = 0.75 < y₁ = 1.5

x₂ = −1.333 < y₁ = 1.5

All x-values are ≤ all y-values.

Thus, the correct answer is x ≤ y.

Why this answer is correct

General Solution:

Use the formula:

Cakes Sold = Total Baked × (Percentage Sold / 100)

Cakes Unsold = Total Baked − Cakes Sold

BakeryTotal Baked% SoldCakes SoldCakes Unsold
A32065%320 × 65 ÷ 100 = 208320 − 208 = 112

D48060%480 × 60 ÷ 100 = 288480 − 288 = 192

Calculations:

Find unsold cakes of Bakery C and D:

C (unsold) = 132

D (unsold) = 192

Total to distribute = 132 + 192 = 324

Divide equally between A and B:

Each receives = 324 ÷ 2 = 162

Find the original total cakes with Bakery A = 320

New total = 320 + 162 = 482

Thus, the correct answer is 482.

D48060%480 × 60 ÷ 100 = 288480 − 288 = 192

Calculations:

Given Information:

Average number of cakes, cupcakes, and brownies in Bakery A = 320

So, total items baked in A = 320 × 3 = 960

Out of this, the number of cakes baked = 320 (already given)

Let the number of brownies = b

Given: Ratio of brownies to cakes = 3:4

⇒ b / 320 = 3 / 4 ⇒ b = (3/4) × 320 = 240

Find the number of cupcakes in A:

Total baked = cakes + brownies + cupcakes = 960

⇒ Cupcakes = 960 − (320 + 240) = 400

Number of cakes sold by Bakery D:

Total cakes baked by D = 480

Sold % = 60%

⇒ Cakes sold = 60% of 480 = (60/100) × 480 = 288

Find the required difference:

Difference = Cupcakes in A − Cakes sold by D = 400 − 288 = 112

Thus, the correct answer is 112.

  4. DOption (d)

    35 litres

  5. EOption (e)

    None of these

View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (b)B.

50 litres

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Milk in X = 5/7 and Milk in Y = 3/7.

Since X and Y are mixed in ratio 7:5, let volumes be 7 and 5 units.

Total Milk = (7 × 5/7) + (5 × 3/7) = 5 + 15/7 = 50/7 units.

Total Mixture = 7 + 5 = 12 units.

Milk in 84 litres = (Total Milk / Total Mixture) × 84 = (50/7 / 12) × 84 = 50 litres.

∴ The correct answer is 50 litres.

Alternate Method

Given: Ratio in X = 5:2, Ratio in Y = 3:4, Mixing Ratio X:Y = 7:5, Total New Mixture = 84 litres.

⇒ Quantity of X in new mixture = (7 / 12) × 84 = 49 litres

⇒ Quantity of Y in new mixture = (5 / 12) × 84 = 35 litres

⇒ Milk from X = 49 × (5 / 7) = 35 litres

⇒ Milk from Y = 35 × (3 / 7) = 15 litres

⇒ Total Milk in new mixture = 35 + 15 = 50 litres

∴ The correct answer is 50 litres.

Why this answer is correct

Shortcut Trick

Initial average for 12 bags = 45 kg.

New average for 15 bags = 45 + 2 = 47 kg.

Sum of 3 new bags = (New average × Total count) − (Old average × Old count)

Sum = (47 × 15) − (45 × 12) = 705 − 540 = 165 kg.

3w + 30 = 165 ⇒ 3w = 135 ⇒ w = 45 kg.

∴ The correct answer is 45 kg.

Alternate Method

Given:

Number of initial rice bags = 12

Initial average weight = 45 kg

Weights of added bags = (w + 5), (w − 15), (w + 40)

Calculations:

⇒ Total weight of 12 bags = 12 × 45 = 540 kg

⇒ Sum of 3 new bags = (w + 5) + (w − 15) + (w + 40) = 3w + 30 kg

⇒ New total count of bags = 12 + 3 = 15

⇒ New average weight = 45 + 2 = 47 kg

⇒ Total weight of 15 bags = 15 × 47 = 705 kg

⇒ 540 + (3w + 30) = 705

⇒ 3w + 570 = 705

⇒ 3w = 705 − 570 = 135

⇒ w = 135 ÷ 3 = 45 kg

∴ The correct answer is 45 kg.

Additional Information

Average formula

Average = (Sum of all observations) ÷ (Number of observations). Sum = Average × Count.

Deviation method

Net change in average = (Total surplus/deficit) ÷ (Total number of items). This is useful for finding the value of new entrants.

Weighted Average

Combined Average = (n1 × a1 + n2 × a2) ÷ (n1 + n2), where n is count and a is average.
