Concept:
Current: It is the flow of electrons per unit time through a conducting wire. It is denoted by I and the SI unit is Ampere (A).
If V potential applied at the end of the conductor whose resistance is R, then,
According to ohm's law "The current through a conductor is proportional to the voltage across the conductor", i.e.
V ∝ I ⇒ V = IR
Where R is a resistance (Prapotionality constant)
I=RV,
Combination of resistance: Resistance can be connected in two way, series and parallel.
Series combination: When two or more resistances are connected one after another such that the same current flows through them.
The equivalent resistance (R) of resistances in series is given by
R = R1 + R2
Parallel combination: When the terminals of two or more resistances are connected at the same two points and the potential difference across them is equal.
The equivalent resistance (R) of resistances in parallel is given by
R1=R11 +R21 or R=R1 + R2R1 × R2,
Calculation:
We know that the potential remains the same in the wire till no load is connected.
Now, given circuit can be changed like below
As we can see, resistance 2 Ω and 6 Ω are in parallel, hence resultant resistance
= 2 +62 × 6 =1.5 Ω,
Now, this resistance is in series with 1.5 Ω. Hence equivalent of these,
= 1.5 + 1.5 = 3 Ω
Now again, this equivalent resistance is in parallel with 3 Ω. Hence, an equivalent of these two
= 3 +33 × 3 =1.5 Ω,
We know that I=RV,
⇒ I=1.56 =4 Ω,
Hence, 4 A current is supplied by a battery.
