Read the given passage and answer the questions that follow.

Santiniketan embodies Rabindranath Tagore’s vision of a place of learning that is unfettered by religious and regional barriers. Established in 1863 with the aim of helping education go beyond the confines of the classroom, Santiniketan grew into the Visva Bharati University in 1921, attracting some of the most creative minds in the country. He developed a curriculum that was a unique blend of art, human values and cultural interchange. Even today, in every step, in every brick and in every tree at Santiniketan, one can still feel his presence, his passion, his dedication and his pride in the institution. In 1862, Maharishi Debendranath Tagore, father of Rabindranath, was taking a boat ride through Birbhum, the westernmost corner of Bengal, when he came across a landscape that struck him as the perfect place for meditation. He bought the large tract of land and built a small house and planted some saplings around it. Debendranath Tagore decided to call the place Santiniketan, or the ‘abode of peace’, because of the serenity it brought to his soul. In 1863, he turned it into a spiritual centre where people from all religions, castes and creeds came and participated in meditation. In the years that followed, Debendranath’s son Rabindranath went on to become one of the most formidable literary forces India has ever produced. He wrote in all literary genres but he was first and foremost a poet. As one of the earliest educators to think in terms of the global village, he envisioned an education that was deeply rooted in one’s immediate surroundings but connected to the cultures of the wider world. Located in the heart of nature, the school aimed to combine education with a sense of obligation towards the larger civic community. Blending the best of western and traditional eastern systems of education, the curriculum revolved organically around nature with classes being held in the open air. Tagore wanted his students to feel free despite being in the formal learning environment of a school because he himself had dropped out of school when he found himself unable to think and felt claustrophobic within the four walls of a classroom. Plato is the earliest important educational thinker, and education is an essential element in ‘The Republic’ (his most important work on philosophy and political theory, written around 360 B.C.). In it, he advocates some rather extreme methods: removing children from their mothers' care and raising them as wards of the state, and differentiating children suitable to the various castes, the highest receiving the most education, so that they could act as guardians of the city and care for the less able. He believed that education should be holistic, including facts, skills, physical discipline, music and art. Plato believed that talent and intelligence are not distributed genetically and thus is be found in children born to all classes, although his proposed system of selective public education for an educated minority of the population does not really follow a democratic model. Aristotle considered human nature, habit and reason to be equally important forces to be cultivated in education, the ultimate aim of which should be to produce good and virtuous citizens. He proposed that teachers lead their students systematically, and that repetition be used as a key tool to develop good habits, unlike Socrates' emphasis on questioning his listeners to bring out their own ideas. Chanhudaro was a tiny settlement (less than 7 hectares) as compared to Mohenjodaro (125 hectares), almost exclusively devoted to craft production, including bead-making, shell cutting, metal-working, seal-making and weight-making. The variety of materials used to make beads is remarkable: stones like carnelian (of a beautiful red colour), jasper, crystal, quartz and steatite; metals like copper, bronze and gold; and shell, faience and terracotta or burnt clay. Some beads were made of two or more stones, cemented together, some of stone with gold caps. The shapes were numerous – disc-shaped, cylindrical, spherical, barrel-shaped, segmented. Some were decorated by incising or painting, and some had designs etched onto them. Techniques for making beads differed according to the material. Steatite, a very soft stone, was easily worked. Some beads were moulded out of a paste made with steatite powder. This permitted making a variety of shapes, unlike the geometrical forms made out of harder stones. How the steatite microbead was made remains a puzzle for archaeologists studying ancient technology. Archaeologists’ experiments have revealed that the red colour of carnelian was obtained by firing the yellowish raw material and beads at various stages of production. Nodules were chipped into rough shapes, and then finely flaked into the final form. Grinding, polishing and finally drilling completed the process. Specialised drills have been found at Chanhudaro, Lothal and more recently at Dholavira. Nageshwar and Balakot, both settlements are near the coast. These were specialised centres for making shell objects – including bangles, ladles and inlay – which were taken to other settlements. Similarly, it is likely that finished products (such as beads) from Chanhudaro and Lothal were taken to the large urban centres such as Mohenjodaro and Harappa.

Her name was Sulekha, but since her childhood, everyone had been calling her Bholi, the simpleton. She was the fourth daughter of Ramlal. When she was ten months old, she had fallen off the cot on her head and perhaps it had damaged some part of her brain. That was why she remained a backward child and came to be known as Bholi, the simpleton. At birth, the child was very fair and pretty. But when she was two years old, she had an attack of smallpox. Only the eyes were saved, but the entire body was permanently disfigured by deep black pockmarks. Little Sulekha could not speak till she was five as she was a slow learner, and when at last she learnt to speak, she stammered. The other children often made fun of her and mimicked her. As a result, she talked very little. Ramlal had seven children — three sons and four daughters, and the youngest of them was Bholi. It was a prosperous farmer’s household and there was plenty to eat and drink. All the children except Bholi were healthy and strong. The sons had been sent to the city to study in schools and later in colleges. Of the daughters, Radha, the eldest, had already been married. The second daughter Mangla’s marriage had also been settled, and when that was done, Ramlal would think of the third, Champa. They were good-looking, healthy girls, and it was not difficult to find bridegrooms for them. But Ramlal was worried about Bholi. She had neither good looks nor intelligence. From her very childhood, Bholi was neglected at home. She was seven years old when Mangla was married. The same year a primary school for girls was opened in their village. The Tehsildar Sahib came to perform its opening ceremony. He said to Ramlal, “As a revenue official you are the representative of the government in the village and so you must set an example to the villagers. You must send your daughters to school.” That night when Ramlal consulted his wife, she cried, “Are you crazy? If girls go to school, who will marry them?” But Ramlal had not the courage to disobey the Tehsildar. At last, his wife said, “I will tell you what to do. Send Bholi to school. View answer & explanation

Correct answer

Answer: (c)C.

how can we

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is how can we.

Key Points

  • Let's look at some conjunctions that contain the inverted form of the verb apart from the interrogative sentences:

  • 'No sooner...than', 'Hardly/scarcely...when', etc.

  • For example:

  • Hardly had I left the cinema hall than I saw the actor himself.

  • Hardly had I left the cinema hall when I saw the actor himself.

  • Since the given sentence is assertive and doesn't contain any of the above-mentioned conjunctions, the use of the inverted form of the verb is wrong in the sentence.

  • Hence 'how we can' will be used instead of 'how can we' in the 3rd part of the sentence.

Hence, the correct sentence is: We must plan how we can cope with the present situation.

unless you

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is "unless you".

Key Points

  • In the given sentence, the use of the conjunction 'lest' is incorrect.
  • The conjunction 'lest' means with the intention of preventing something undesirable; to avoid the risk of.
  • The conjunction 'unless' should be used in place of 'lest' as per the context of the sentence.
  • The conjunction 'unless' means except if (used to introduce the case in which a statement being made is not true or valid).
  • 'Unless' is followed by a present tense, a past tense, or a past perfect tense (never by a conditional).
  • The given sentence is the first conditional sentence, therefore the format should be unless + present tense.
  • Therefore, the use of the verb 'will' is superfluous and it should be removed from the sentence.
  • Hence, the correct answer is option 4.

Hence the correct sentence is: I will not go to the party unless you promise to accompany me.

  • They are pronounced the same, there’s a very small difference in how they’re written, and it’s also easy to mistake the contraction in it’s for a possessive.
  • But the rules are very clear—it’s is the same type of contraction as “where’s” or “there’s,” and 'its' is a possessive just like “my” or “your.”

Answer: (a)A.

come to the

Why this answer is correct

The correct answer is 'come to the'.

  • If we carefully examine the sentence, we can easily figure out that it is talking about an incident of the past.
  • Thus, we will use the simple past tense 'came' instead of 'come'

Thus the correct sentence is: No one of them came to the inauguration of our new factory.

Confusion Points

  • Many test-takers might get confused that there is another erroneous part in the sentence - "No one of them" but we must remember that this phrase is grammatically correct
  • The confusion arises that we should write "None" instead of "No one"
  • This sentence can be written as:
  • None of them came to the inauguration of our new factory.
  • Not one of them came to the inauguration of our new factory.
  • No one of them came to the inauguration of our new factory.
  • All the above three forms are grammatically correct:
  • The meaning of the first two forms is the same. The only difference is that while the former is used in classical English the latter is used in colloquial English
  • But there is a difference between the meaning of the first two forms and the third form:
  • "No one of them" is an emphatic form employed to distinguish a proposition concerning a number of entities taken singly from propositions concerning the same entities taken in combination
  • Consider the difference between these two propositions concerning three people, Adolphus, Benjamin, and Carloman, suspected of murdering Dionysius.
  • None of them killed him. This is taken to assert that all three are innocent of the murder.
  • No one of them killed him. This implies the possibility that two of them—A and B, or A and C, or B and C—or all three, conspired to commit the murder.

The correct answer is 'The car is being lifted with a crane.'

Key Points

  • The given sentence is in Active Voice. As per the given question we have to change it into Passive Voice.
  • The process of transformation as follows:
  • The subject of the given sentence is 'They'.
  • The object of the given sentence is 'the car'.
  • The subject is put in place of the object and the object will be put in place of the subject.
  • But in this case, the subject 'they' will become hidden in passive voice because the focus is on the crane being lifted and 'them' only serves as a necessary actor in the active voice, which is no more needed in the passive voice
  • 'Are lifting' will be changed into 'is being lifted'. Because 'The car' is singular hence, will be followed by a singular helping verb.
  • 'With a crane' will be written as it is.

Therefore the correct sentence is: The car is being lifted with a crane.
