Shortcut Trick
For three equal distances covered at speeds x, y, and z, the average speed is the Harmonic Mean of the speeds.
Let the assumed distance for each segment be the LCM of (200, 300, 600) = 600 km.
Time taken for each segment = 600/200 = 3 h, 600/300 = 2 h, 600/600 = 1 h.
Total time = 3 + 2 + 1 = 6 hours | Total distance = 3 × 600 = 1800 km.
Average speed = 1800 ÷ 6 = 300 km/h.
∴ The correct answer is 300 km/h.
Alternate Method
Given: Three equal distances d = 100 km each; Speeds v1 = 200 km/h, v2 = 300 km/h, v3 = 600 km/h.
Formula Used: Average Speed = (Total Distance) ÷ (Total Time)
⇒ Total Distance = 100 + 100 + 100 = 300 km
⇒ Time for 1st part (t1) = 100 ÷ 200 = 1/2 hour
⇒ Time for 2nd part (t2) = 100 ÷ 300 = 1/3 hour
⇒ Time for 3rd part (t3) = 100 ÷ 600 = 1/6 hour
⇒ Total Time = (1/2 + 1/3 + 1/6) = (3 + 2 + 1) ÷ 6 = 6/6 = 1 hour
⇒ Average Speed = 300 ÷ 1 = 300 km/h
∴ The correct answer is 300 km/h.
Additional Information
Average Speed for Equal Distance Segments
If a distance is divided into n equal parts with speeds v1, v2, ..., vn, the average speed is n ÷ (1/v1 + 1/v2 + ... + 1/vn).
Two Equal Distances Case
For two equal distances covered at speeds x and y, the Average Speed is (2 × x × y) ÷ (x + y).
Unit Conversion
To convert km/h to m/s, multiply the speed by 5/18. To convert m/s to km/h, multiply by 18/5.
