Concept:
Collison’s are generally classified into two types elastic and inelastic collisions
Based on this law of conservation this classification is made, and the laws of collision states
<br>
Perfectly elastic collision
If the law of conservation of momentum and that of kinetic energy hold good during the collision.
i.e., initial momentum = final momentum
Inelastic collision
If the law of conservation of momentum holds good during a collision while that of kinetic energy is not.
But inelastic Collison obeys the law of conservation of linear momentum
Coefficient of restitution (e)
e=Relative;velocity;before;collisionRelative;velocity;after;collision=u1−u2v2−v1
Calculation:
Given that,
mass of body A, mA = 2 kg
Speed of block A, uA = 4 m/s
mass of body B, mB = 3 kg
Speed of block B, uB= -2 m/s
Now according to the law of conservation of momentum
mAuA + mBuB = mAvA + mBvB
2 x 4 - 3 x 2 = 2 x vA + 3 x vB
2 x vA + 3 x vB = 2 -----(1)
Now coefficient of restitution for an inelastic collision is always one and can be expressed as
\(e=1=\frac{{{v}{B}}-{{v}{A}}}{{{u}{A}}-{{u}{B}}}=\frac{{{v}{B}}-{{v}{A}}}{4+2}\Rightarrow {{v}{B}}-{{v}{A}}=6\) ----- (2)
Thus by comparing both the quadratic equation we get values of both velocity of body A and B as
vB=514m/s
And now by substituting this value in eq (2) we get, vA=−516m/s
Hence from this, we can see that body A will be moving in the opposite direction compared to B
Thus in this case body, A and body B will move in opposite directions in an elastic collision
