Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) Preparation Guide
CTET Preparation Guide
Overview
The Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) has two independent papers. Paper I is for candidates who intend to teach Classes I-V, while Paper II is for candidates who intend to teach Classes VI-VIII. Each paper contains 150 multiple-choice questions for 150 marks in 150 minutes. The official information bulletin specifies no negative marking, so use every question as an opportunity to earn a mark after eliminating clearly unsuitable options.
Paper I has five compulsory 30-question areas: Child Development & Pedagogy, Mathematics, Environmental Studies, Language I and Language II. Paper II has Child Development & Pedagogy, two language sections, and a 60-question choice between Mathematics & Science and Social Studies/Social Science. Choose the Paper II subject option that matches the teaching area you are preparing for.
Exam Pattern
| Paper I section | Questions | Duration | Negative Marking |
|---|---|---|---|
| Child Development & Pedagogy | 30 | 30 min | None |
| Mathematics | 30 | 30 min | None |
| Environmental Studies | 30 | 30 min | None |
| Language I | 30 | 30 min | None |
| Language II | 30 | 30 min | None |
Total: 150 questions in 150 minutes.
For Paper II, replace the Mathematics and Environmental Studies portions above with one 60-question subject option: Mathematics & Science or Social Studies/Social Science. The two 30-question language sections and the 30-question Child Development & Pedagogy section remain part of the paper.

- Wrong answer: 0 marks
- Unanswered: 0 marks
Preparation Strategy
- Choose Your Paper First: Build one timetable for Paper I or Paper II before collecting resources. If you need eligibility for both levels, prepare the common pedagogy and language areas once, then separately plan the Paper I or Paper II subject sections.
- Learn Concepts and Pedagogy Together: CTET tests not only subject knowledge but also how children learn. After every Mathematics, EVS, Science or Social Studies topic, revise the teaching approach, common learner errors and assessment method associated with it.
- Use NCERT as the Foundation: Read the relevant Classes I-V or VI-VIII NCERT material to refresh concepts, examples and vocabulary. Turn each chapter into short notes, practice questions and a list of misconceptions to revisit.
- Practise Both Languages Deliberately: Time unseen-passage practice for Language I and Language II. Review why each wrong answer failed - vocabulary, inference, grammar or comprehension - instead of merely checking the score.
- Take Full-Length Mocks: Rehearse 150 questions in 150 minutes. Since there is no negative marking, make a final-pass attempt at every remaining question after answering the ones you know with confidence.
- Review Pedagogy Errors Weekly: Keep an error log for learning theories, inclusive education, classroom scenarios and teaching methods. Rework these mistakes before the next mock so that conceptual gaps do not repeat.
