ईसवी संवत् के आरंभ तक जर्मन लोग गोत्र अथवा कुल समुदायों में रहते थे और गोत्र क़बीलों में संयुक्त थे। जर्मन लोग मवेशी और कुक्कुट पालते थे, जानवरों का शिकार करते और मगर कृषि उनका मुख्य उद्यम था। वे पेड़ों को काटकर और जड़ों को उखाड़कर खेत बनाते थे। उस पर वे तब तक खेती करते थे, जब तक मिट्टी अनुर्वर नहीं हो जाती थी। दो - तीन साल छोड़ दिया जाता था और जगत को साफ़ करके नया खेत बना लिया जाता था। ज़मीन को अब सिर्फ़ कुदालों - फावड़ों से ही काश्त नहीं किया जाता था। उसे अकसर हलके हलों से जोता के पटरी से बराबर किया जाता था। हलों को बैल खीचते थे। जर्मनी ने रोमनों को दो-खेत आवर्तन पद्धति से खेती करते देखा और उसे ग्रहण कर लिया। इस पद्धति में कृषिभूमि को दो जाता था - एक खेत को काश्ट किया जाता था और दूसरे को खाली रहने दिया जाता था। जोते गये और खाली खेतों की हर साल अदल - बदल होती थी। दो खेत आवर्तन पद्धति (दुखेतिर) परिणामस्वरूप कृषि में श्रम उत्पादिता में वृद्धि आई।
