Direction: Read the following passage carefully and answer the question given below.

Chocolate is a food product made from cocoa beans, consumed as candy, and used to make beverages and to flavour or coat various confections and bakery products. Chocolate is rich in carbohydrates. It is an excellent source of quick energy, and it also contains minute amounts of the stimulating alkaloids theobromine and caffeine. The cacao tree was cultivated more than 3,000 years ago by the Mayan, Toltec, and Aztec peoples, who prepared a beverage from its fruit, (sometimes using it as a ceremonial drink) and also used the bean as a currency. The Mayans considered chocolate to be the food of the gods, held the cacao tree to be sacred, and even buried dignitaries with bowls of the substance (along with other items deemed useful in the afterlife).

In fact, the identification of the word ka-ka-w ("cacao") inscribed on those containers was key to deciphering the Mayan's phonetic manner of writing. Spain was the earliest European country to incorporate chocolate into its cuisine, but exactly how that happened is vague. It is known that Christopher Columbus took cocoa beans to Spain after his fourth voyage in 1502, though little was made of it at that time. It has been commonly thought that in 1519, Montezuma II, the Aztec ruler of Mexico, served a bitter cocoa-bean drink to the Spanish conquistador, Hernan Cortes, who subsequently introduced the drink to Spain.

Once upon a time, there lived a very cunning and mischievous fox. He used to speak to other animals sweetly and gain their trust, before playing tricks on them. One day the fox met a stork. He befriended the stork and acted like a very good friend. Soon, he invited the stork to have a feast with him. The stork happily accepted the invitation. The day of the feast came, and the stork went to the fox's house. To her surprise and disappointment, the fox said that he could not make a big feast as promised, and just offered some soup When he brought the soup out of the kitchen, the stork saw that it was in a shallow bowl! The poor stork could not have any soup with its long bill, but the fox easily licked the soup from the plate. As the stork just touched the soup with the tip of its bill, the fox asked her, "How is the soup? Don't you like it?" The hungry stork replied, "Oh it is good, but my stomach is upset, and I can't take any more soup!" "I'm sorry for troubling you," said the fox. The stork replied, "Oh dear, please don't say sorry. I have some health problem and cannot enjoy what you offer." She left the place after thanking the fox and inviting him to her house for dinner. The day arrived, and the fox reached the stork's place. After exchanging pleasantries, the stork served soup for both of them, in a narrow jar with a long neck. She was able to have the soup very easily with her long bill, but the fox obviously could not After finishing hers, the stork asked the fox if he was enjoying the soup. The fox remembered the feast he himself had given the stork and felt very ashamed. He stammered, "I...I'd better leave now I have a tummy ache." Humiliated, he left the place running.

Direction: Read the following passage carefully and answer the question given below.

Earth is home to more than 16,000 species of plants, animals, fungi, and algae that are currently listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. In the U.S. alone, nearly 700 species of animals and 900 species of plants are considered threatened or endangered. Given that human-made threats such as habitat fragmentation, overhunting, overfishing, global warming, invasive species, and pollution are the major drivers of modern extinctions and population declines, the preservation, and recovery of endangered species depend on human awareness and intervention.

Endangered Species Day is observed each year on the third Friday of May as a way to both raise awareness of the continued plight of endangered species and celebrate those that have recovered because of conservation efforts. The U. S. Endangered Species Act of 1973 has been credited with the recovery and protection of several prominent American species, including the bald eagle, the American alligator, and the gray wolf. Globally, many governments, non-governmental organizations, and grassroots efforts have made great strides to protect our natural heritage, though the fight to preserve biodiversity is ever ongoing.

Direction: Read the following passage carefully and answer the question given below.

The development of a mine consists of several principal activities: conducting a feasibility study, including a financial analysis to decide whether to abandon or develop the property; designing the mine; acquiring mining rights; filing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS); and preparing the site for production. Preparation could cause environmental damage by the excavation of the deposit to remove overburden (surface material above the ore deposit that is devoid of ore minerals) prior to mining.

Extraction is the removal of ore from the ground on a large scale by one or more of three principal methods: surface mining, underground mining, and in situ mining (extraction of ore from a deposit using chemical solutions). After the ore is removed from the ground, it is crushed so that the valuable mineral in the ore can be separated from the waste material and concentrated by flotation (a process that separates finely ground minerals from one another by causing some to float in a froth and others to sink), gravity, magnetism, or other methods, usually at the mine site, to prepare it for further stages of processing. The production of large amounts of waste material (often very acidic) and particulate emission have led to major environmental and health concerns with ore extraction and concentration.
