One of the world's largest squirrels is the Indian giant squirrel. It has a head and body length of 25-50 cm and tail around 60 cm. It is tracked down in the clammy evergreen woodlands south of the Ganga. The grizzled giant squirrel is a second species that can be found in Sri Lanka and in some hill ranges in south India. It stands out because its tail and dorsal surface are mixed with white and are grey or brownish-grey. A third variety, the Malayan giant squirrel, can be found in India's Assam and Sikkim, Bhutan, and Nepal, north of the Ganga. It has buff-coloured underparts and a dark brown coat that is almost black.
Forests are home to the massive squirrels. They move from tree to tree in long leaps, sometimes covering 6 meters in a single bound, which is remarkable. They rarely descend to the ground and stick to the trees' higher branches. Because it is shy and hides, the Indian giant squirrel is hard to see. The short, sharp sound of its loud call typically indicates its presence. The squirrel does not flee when scared; instead, it hides behind tree trunks or in thick foliage. The Indian giant squirrel is either solitary or social. It constructs a massive, globular nest of twigs and leaves away from large tree branches or the main trunk. A single squirrel may construct multiple nests in adjacent trees.
