Motilal Nehru's transformation, spurred by Mahatma Gandhi's influence during the NonCooperation Movement, represents a remarkable act of sacrifice. Following the 1920 Calcutta session of the Congress, Nehru dramatically altered his lifestyle. He resigned from the UP Council, reduced his staff significantly and abandoned his opulent way of living. This included publicly burning imported finery, silks and crystal, as well as discarding a large amount of furniture. Beyond these personal changes, Nehru relinquished his highly profitable legal career. He further demonstrated his commitment to the nationalist cause by donating his grand residence, Anand Bhawan, a structure he had painstakingly built, to the nation. The mansion was subsequently renamed Swaraj Bhawan. Nehru, along with his family, relocated to a smaller dwelling, which they then named Anand Bhawan, preserving the original name. While the Mahatma's call for simplicity and austerity resonated with numerous Congress leaders and workers, Motilal Nehru's comprehensive sacrifice, encompassing his profession, possessions and home, stood out as an exceptional example of dedication. His transition from a life of affluence to one of simplicity underscored his profound commitment to India's struggle for independence.
