In the 1930s, Subhas Chandra Bose’s growing differences with Mahatma Gandhi shaped his distinct path in the Indian independence movement. While Gandhi championed nonviolent resistance, Bose believed in a more militant approach. Despite being elected president of the Indian National Congress in 1938, Bose's aggressive stance clashed with Gandhian principles, particularly regarding economic policy. Bose advocated for large-scale industrialization through a national planning committee, a vision that contradicted Gandhi’s emphasis on self-sufficient rural economies. Bose was re-elected in 1939, defeating Gandhi’s preferred candidate, Pattabhi Sitaramayya. This victory deepened the ideological rift and ultimately led to Bose’s resignation from the Congress presidency. Determined to push his radical agenda, he formed the Forward Bloc to unite leftist and socialist factions.
British authorities, viewing him as a growing threat, imprisoned him in 1940. Bose responded with a hunger strike, pressuring the government to release him. His refusal to compromise or conform to Congress leadership made him both a controversial and iconic figure. His leadership style, strategic vision and willingness to oppose both, colonial and internal constraints solidified his legacy as a revolutionary distinct from Gandhi’s mainstream nationalist approach.
