Directions: Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow. Certain words are printed in bold to help you locate them while answering some of these.

Mobile phones may use two types of input devices. In regular mobile phones, a keypad type of device is used, which is mounted separately from the screen of the cellphone. Whereas in touch screen cellphones, a touch screen is a cellphone display screen that also acts as an input device. The touch screens are sensitive to pressure; a user interacts with the mobile applications by touching pictures or words on the screen. Most mobile phone keyboards are basic in that they use a tactile surface you are accustomed to touching, and underneath is a basic rubber peg that travels some depth until it encounters resistance in the form of the actual keyboard surface which is sometimes called a- bubble board. This is basically a semi-circle of aluminium shaped in the form of a dome and provides that springing effect of key and feedback on your finger when you press down and the button regains its at-rest shape and normal position. Touch screen technologies used in mobile phones include resistive, capacitive, and surface-wave-based systems. The resistive system consists of a normal glass panel that is covered with conductive and resistive metallic layers. These two layers are held apart by spacers, and a scratch-resistant layer is placed on top of the whole setup. An electrical current runs through the two layers while the monitor is operational. When a user touches the screen, the two layers make contact exactly at that spot. The change in the electrical field is noted and the coordinates of the point of contact are calculated by the processor. Once the coordinates are known, a special driver translates the touch into something that the operating system can understand, much as a computer mouse driver translates the movements of a mouse into a click or a drag. The change in the electrical current is registered as a touch event and sent to the controller for processing. In the capacitive system, a layer of an electroconductive material (most often indium-tin-oxide) that stores an electrical charge is placed on the glass panel of the monitor. When a user touches the monitor with his finger, some of the charges are transferred to the user, so the charge on the capacitive layer decreases. This decrease is measured in circuits located at each corner of the monitor. The computer calculates, from the relative differences in charge at each corner, exactly where the touch event took place and then relays that information to the touch screen driver software. In surface-wave-based systems, touchscreens operate by tracking ultrasonic sound waves to identify the location of points on a screen. Surface acoustic wave (SAW) touchscreens are made with a single pane of glass, a transmitter, and two piezoelectric receivers. The transmitter produces ultrasonic waves that move over the screen, reflect, and then are read by the receiving piezoelectric receivers. When the surface of the glass is touched, some acoustic waves are absorbed, but some bounce back and are detected by the piezoelectric receivers. Because ultrasound surface wave acoustic touchscreens use glass, they have high transmittance and long operating lives. Ultrasound surface wave acoustic touchscreens are often used in the medical field, casinos, amusement facilities, public facilities, and financial institutions.

Resistive touch screen panels are generally more affordable but offer only 75 percent clarity and the layer can be damaged by sharp objects. One advantage of the capacitive system over the resistive system is that it transmits almost 92 percent of the light emitted from the monitor, whereas the resistive system transmits only about 75 percent. This gives the capacitive system a much clearer picture than the resistive system. Also, the capacitive system has a very long life.

Of course, there are still reasons to consider a SAW touchscreen. Unlike capacitive touchscreens, SAW touchscreens can read touch commands created with a traditional stylus. In fact, you can use any object to perform touch commands on a SAW touchscreen. Any object placed on the display surface will disrupt the sound waves in that area. SAW touchscreens are also long-lasting. This is because performing touch commands on a SAW touchscreen places little or no stress on its components. Therefore, SAW touchscreens can last for hundreds of thousands of touches.

Additional Information

A gerund is a verbal that ends in -ing and functions as a noun. The term verbal indicates that a gerund, like the other two kinds of verbals, is based on a verb and therefore expresses action or a state of being. However, since a gerund functions as a noun, it occupies some positions in a sentence that a noun ordinarily would, for example: subject, direct object, subject complement, and object of a preposition.

For e.g. Traveling might satisfy your desire for new experiences. (Traveling is the gerund.)

    62 kg

  4. ((d))

    65 kg

  5. ((e))

Show Answer
Answer: ((b))

59 kg

Shortcut Trick

Weight of New Player = Weight of Replaced Player + (Total Players × Increase in Average)

Weight of New Player = 55 + (12 × 1/3)

Weight of New Player = 55 + 4 = 59 kg

∴ The correct answer is 59 kg.

Alternate Method

Given:

Number of players (n) = 12

Weight of player replaced = 55 kg

Average weight increase = 1/3 kg

Calculations:

⇒ Total weight increase = Number of players × Increase in average

⇒ Total weight increase = 12 × 1/3 = 4 kg

⇒ Weight of new player = Weight of replaced player + Total weight increase

⇒ Weight of new player = 55 + 4 = 59 kg

∴ The correct answer is 59 kg.

Additional Information

Net Change in Sum

When one member is replaced, the Total Sum changes by the difference between the new value and the old value: (New Value − Old Value) = n × (Change in Average).

Average Concept

Average = Sum of all observations ÷ Number of observations. If the average increases, the new value must be greater than the replaced value.

The difference between the simple interest and the compound interest (compounded annually) on a certain sum of money, after a period of 3 years, is Rs.244. Find the sum (in Rs.), if the rate is 5% while calculating both the types of interest.

Show Answer
Answer: ((b))

32000

Given:

Rate of Interest = 5%

Time period = 3 years

Difference between the Simple Interest and Compound Interest = Rs.244

Formulae Used:

If P = Principal,

R= Rate of Interest, and

n = number of years;

Then we can write:

When the interest is compounded annually, the amount is obtained as:

Amount = P × [1 + (R/100)]n, and

The Compound Interest (CI) is obtained as:

CI = Amount - P.

Also, the Simple Interest (SI) is given as:

SI = (P × n × R)/100

Calculation:

The amount, when interest is compounded annually, is calculated as:

Amount = P × [1 + (5/100)]n

The Compound Interest (CI) is, hence, calculated as:

CI = P × [1 + (5/100)]3 - P

⇒ CI = P × [(1.05)3 - 1]

⇒ CI = 0.157625P      ----(i)

The Simple Interest (SI) is calculated as:

SI = (P × 3 × 5)/100

SI = 0.15P      ----(ii)

From equations (i) and (ii)

CI -SI = 0.157625P - 0.15P

⇒ CI -SI = 0.007625P      ----(iii)

∵ It is given that the difference between the CI and the SI = Rs. 244,

From equation (iii), we get

0.007625P = 244

⇒ P = 244/0.007625

⇒ P = 32000

∴ The principal sum is Rs.32,000

Show Answer
Answer: ((c))

Rs. 125

Given:

Discount = Rs. 100

Shopkeeper earns profit = 140%

Profit% if sold at no discount = 220%

Calculation:

Let the CP be 100%

SP if profit is 140% = 240%

SP if profit is 220% = 320%

Difference in SP = Discount of Rs. 100

So, 220%  – 140% = Rs. 100

⇒ 80% = Rs. 100

Then 100% = Rs. (100/80) × 100

⇒ Rs. 125

∴ CP of the article is Rs. 125

    18 km per hr.

Show Answer
Answer: ((c))

35/2 km per hr.

Given:

Distance A and B is = 162 kms

Both trains meet after 6 hours

Relative speed:

Relative speed of two trains = 162/6 km/hr

⇒  27 km/hr

Calculation:

Let the speed of slower train be x km/hr

Speed of faster train = (x + 8) km/hr

So, x + (x + 8) = 27 km/hr

⇒ 2x + 8 = 27 km/hr

⇒ 2x = 19 km/hr

⇒ x = 19/2 km/hr

Speed of the faster train = (19/2) + 8 km/hr

⇒ 35/2 km/hr

∴ Speed of faster train is 35/2 km/hr

    22.5 days

  4. ((d))

    25 days

  5. ((e))

    none of these

Show Answer
Answer: ((c))

22.5 days

Shortcut Trick

Efficiency ratio A : B = 3 : 1

Time ratio A : B = 1 : 3 (Inverse of efficiency)

Difference in time units = 3 − 1 = 2 units → 60 days

1 unit = 30 days. So, A takes 30 days and B takes 90 days.

Together (XY / X+Y) = (30 × 90) ÷ (30 + 90) = 2700 ÷ 120 = 22.5 days.

∴ The correct answer is 22.5 days.

Alternate Method

PersonDaysTotal WorkEfficiency
A30903
B901

Given: Efficiency of A is 3 times B. Time difference is 60 days.

Calculation:

⇒ Let time taken by B = x days, then A = x − 60 days.

⇒ Ratio of time A : B = 1 : 3

⇒ (x − 60) / x = 1 / 3

⇒ 3x − 180 = x

⇒ 2x = 180 ⇒ x = 90 days (Time for B)

⇒ Time for A = 90 − 60 = 30 days.

Total Work = LCM(30, 90) = 90 units.

Combined Efficiency = 3 + 1 = 4 units/day.

Time taken together = 90 ÷ 4 = 22.5 days.

∴ The correct answer is 22.5 days.

Additional Information

Efficiency and Time Relation

Efficiency is inversely proportional to the time taken to complete a task. If efficiency ratio is x:y, the time ratio is y:x.

Work from Efficiency

Total Work = Efficiency × Time. This is the fundamental unit for solving all Time and Work problems.

Combined Work Formula

For two people taking x and y days respectively, the time taken together is (x × y) ÷ (x + y).

Answer: ((b))

42000

Given:

The ratio of number of students of class M and N is 5 : 6.

Number of students of class M is increased by 30%

Number of students of class N is increased by 12600.

Concept used:

Here we will be using the fundamental concept of ratio.

Calculation:

Let the number of students in class M and N be 5x and 6x respectively

Number of students in class M after the increase = 5x + [(30/100) × 5x] = 5x + 1.5x = 6.5x

Number of students in class N after the increase = (6x + 12600)

As the ratio of number of students of both classes still remains 5 : 6

6.5x/(6x + 12600) = 5/6

⇒ 6.5x × 6 = 5 × (6x + 12600)

⇒ 39x = 30x + 63000

⇒ 9x = 63000

⇒ x = (63000/9)

⇒ x = 7000

∴ The number of students of class N = 6 × 7000 = 42000

The number of Social Science books = 25/100 × x = x/4

The Remaining number of books = x - x/4 = 3x/4

The number of General Science books = 16/100 × 3x/4 = 3x/25

The Remaining number of books = 3x/4 - 3x/25 = 63x/100

The number of Mathematics books = 63x/100 × 1/9 = 7x/100

The Remaining number of books = 63x/100 - 7x/100 = 56x/100

The number of Reasoning book are 280.

⇒ 56x/100 = 280

⇒ x = 500

∴ The total number of book in the store is 500.

Let the total percentage of the book be 100.

25% of books are of Social Science.

The Remaining percentage of books = 100 - 25 = 75%

The percentage of General Science books = 16/100 × 75 = 12%

The Remaining percentage of books = 75 - 12 = 63%

The percentage of Mathematics books = 63 × 1/9 = 7%

The Remaining percentage of books = 63 - 7 = 56%

The number of Reasoning book is 280.

⇒ 56% = 280

⇒ 1% = 5

⇒ 100% = 500

∴ The total number of book in the store is 500.

The number of Reasoning book is 280.

⇒ 100 × (100 - 25)/100 × (100 - 16)/100 × (1 - 1/9) = 280

⇒ 100% = 500

∴ The total number of book in the store is 500.

Show Answer
Answer: ((a))

36 litres

GIVEN :

The mixture contains milk and water in the ratio 3 ∶ 2.

ASSUMPTION :

Suppose the quantities of milk and water in mixture capacity are 3x and 2x litres.

CALCULATION :

⇒ Quantities of milk and water in 10 litres of the mixture will be (10 × 3/5) = 6 litres and (10 × 2/5) = 4 litres respectively;

According to the given statement:

(3x – 6) = (2x – 4 + 10)

⇒ x = 12

∴ Initial quantity of milk in the mixture = 12 × 3 = 36 litres

Ajay, Rohit, and Rohan together started a business by investing ₹ 35000, ₹ 28000, and ₹ 56000 respectively, but after six months Rohit and Rohan withdrew half of their capitals and at the end of the year they earned a profit of ₹ 154000. What is the profit of Rohit in the total profit?

  1. ((a))

    ₹ 33000

  2. ((b))

    ₹ 55000

  3. ((c))

    ₹ 66000

  4. ((d))

    ₹ 77000

  5. ((e))

    ₹ 88000

Show Answer
Answer: ((a))

₹ 33000

Given:

The initial investment of Ajay = ₹ 35000

The initial investment of Rohit = ₹ 28000

The initial investment of Rohan = ₹ 56000

Total Profit = ₹ 154000

Concept used:

Profit = Investment × time period

Calculation:

Ajay invested 35000 for 12 months,

⇒ Total investment of Ajay = (35000 × 12)

⇒ 420000

Rohit invested 28000 for 6 months and (1/2) × (28000) for next 6 months,

⇒ Total investment of Rohit = [(28000 × 6) + (14000 × 6)]

⇒ 252000

Rohan invested 56000 for 6 months and (1/2) × (56000) for next 6 months,

⇒ Total investment of Rohan = [(56000 × 6) + (28000 × 6)]

⇒ 504000

Profit ratio = 420000 : 252000 : 504000

⇒ 5x : 3x : 6x = 14x

⇒ 14x = 154000

⇒ x = 11000

Profit of Rohit = 3x = 3 × 11000

∴ The profit of Rohit is ₹ 33000.

Show Answer
Answer: ((d))

20

The car covers 75 km in one hour, but due to stoppage it is able to cover only 50 km in one hour

∴ Distance which the car is not able to cover due to stoppage = 75 - 50 = 25 km

Time which the car loses in stoppage = Time taken by it to cover 25 km distance

Time which the car loses in stoppage = 25/75 = 1/3 hr

Or 1/3 × 60 i.e. 20 minutes

Hence the answer is 20 minutes

A big mansion has a rectangular grassy field of 95 m and 60 m and it has a path of 2.5 m wide all around it on the inside. Find the cost of gravelling the path at Rs. 3 per square meter.

  1. ((a))

    Rs. 2530

  2. ((b))

    Rs. 2250

  3. ((c))

    Rs. 2340

  4. ((d))

    Rs. 2620

  5. ((e))

    None of these

Show Answer
Answer: ((b))

Rs. 2250

Given:

The length and breadth of the field with the path are 95 m and 60 m respectively

The width of the path inside the mansion = 2.5 m

Formula used:

The area of rectangle = (Length × Breadth)

Calculation:

Area of the field with the path = 95 × 60 = 5700 m2

Area of the field without the path = 90 × 55 = 4950 m2

So, area of the path = Area of the field with the path - Area of the field without the path

⇒ (5700 – 4950) m2

⇒ 750 m2

So, the cost of gravelling the path = area of the path × cost per meter

⇒ (750 × 3) = Rs. 2250

∴ The cost of gravelling the path is Rs. 2250.

Direction: In the following questions, assuming the given statements to be true, find which of the two conclusions I and II given them is/are definitely follow.

Statements :

J = K < M ≤ P > Q, S ≥ U = V > K

Conclusions :

I. U ≤ P

II. V ≥ M

  1. ((a))

    Only conclusion I follows.

  2. ((b))

    Only conclusion II follows.

  3. ((c))

Both conclusion I and II follow.

  4. ((d))

Neither conclusion I nor conclusion II follows.

  5. ((e))

Either conclusion I or conclusion II follows.

Show Answer
Answer: ((d))

Neither conclusion I nor conclusion II follows.

Statements :

J = K < M ≤ P > Q, S ≥ U = V > K

On combining,

S ≥ U = V > J = K < M ≤ P > Q

Conclusions :

I. U ≤ P: False(As, S ≥ U = V > J = K < M ≤ P > Q, so the relation between U and P cannot be determined)

II. V ≥ M False(As, S ≥ U = V > J = K < M ≤ P > Q, so the relation between V and M cannot be determined)

Therefore, Neither conclusion I nor conclusion II follows.

88

Direction: In the following questions, assuming the given statements to be true, find which of the two conclusions I and II given them is/are definitely follow.

Statement: P ≤ Q < S = T ≥ U ≥ W < Z

Conclusion:

I. S > W

II. W = T

  1. ((a))

    Only conclusion II is true

  2. ((b))

Either conclusion I or II is true

  3. ((c))

Both conclusion I and II are true

  4. ((d))

Neither conclusion I nor II is true

  5. ((e))

    Only conclusion I is true

Show Answer
Answer: ((b))

Either conclusion I or II is true

Statement:

P ≤ Q < S = T ≥ U ≥ W < Z

Conclusion:

I. S > W: False: As, P ≤ Q < S = T ≥ U ≥ W < Z. so, the relation between S and W is S ≥ W.

II. W = T: False: As, P ≤ Q < S = T ≥ U ≥ W < Z. so, the relation between T and W is T ≥ W.

As S = T, Both form complementary pairs.

Therefore, either I or II follows.

89

Direction: In the following questions, assuming the given statements to be true, find which of the two conclusions I and II given them is/are definitely follow.

Statement :

G ≤ L ≥ O; A > X = O ≥ W ≥ I < N

Conclusion;

I. I < L

II. L = I

  1. ((a))

If only conclusion I is true.

  2. ((b))

If only conclusion II is true.

  3. ((c))

If either conclusion I or II is true.

  4. ((d))

If neither conclusion I nor II is true.

  5. ((e))

If both conclusion I and II are true.

Show Answer
Answer: ((c))

If either conclusion I or II is true.

Given statement :

G ≤ L ≥ O; A > X = O ≥ W ≥ I < N

On combining,

G ≤ L ≥ O ≥ W ≥ I < N.

or G ≤ L ≥ O = X < A

Conclusion:

I. I < L : False: (As, G ≤ L ≥ O ≥ W ≥ I < N. so, I can be less than or equal to L i.e., I ≤ L)

II. L = I: False: (As G ≤ L ≥ O ≥ W ≥ I < N. so I can be less than or equal to L i.e., I ≤ L)

Both form a complementary pair.

Therefore, either I or II follows.

90

Directions: In the following question assuming the given statements to be True, find which of the conclusion among given conclusions is/are definitely true and then give your answers accordingly.

Statements:

D > M ≤ T > K; D ≥ J ≥ G; S = K

Conclusions:

I. T < G

II. G ≤ T

  1. ((a))

    Only I is true

  2. ((b))

    Only II is true

  3. ((c))

Either I or II is true

  4. ((d))

    None is true

  5. ((e))

Both I and II are true

Show Answer
Answer: ((c))

Either I or II is true

Given statements: D > M ≤ T > K; D ≥ J ≥ G; S = K

Conclusions:

I. T < G → False ( G ≤ J ≤ D > M ≤ T → No relation between G and T can be established)

II. G ≤ T → False (G ≤ J ≤ D > M ≤ T → No relation between G and T can be established)

Conclusion I and II form a complementary pair.

Thus, Either I or II is true.

Additional Information Required conditions for Either - or :

  1. If all three possible conditions (<, >, =) between any two entities are included in conclusions, it would be a case of ‘either-or’. 2.  i) If both the predicates are the same in 2 conclusions.

ii) Both conclusions are false individually.

iii) On combining both the conclusions, if the condition follows, it would be ‘either - or’ case

  1. If any of the predicates is equal to some other element according to the question, then it is replaceable in the conclusions.
