Concept:
Section formula: The section formula helps in determining the coordinates of a point which facilitates the division of the line joining two points in a ratio. This takes place either internally or externally.
So, Co-ordinate of a point P(x, y) that divides the line segment joining A(x1, y1) and B(x2, y2) internally in the ratio m:n is
\(P(x, y) = \bigg(\frac{mx_2+nx_1}{m+n} , \frac{my_2+ny_1}{m+n}\bigg) \) . and
Co-ordinate of a point P(x, y) that divides the line segment joining A(x1, y1) and B(x2, y2) externally in the ratio m:n is
\(P(x, y) = \bigg(\frac{mx_2-nx_1}{m-n} , \frac{my_2-ny_1}{m-n}\bigg) \) .
Calculation:
Let A = (1, - 2) and B = (- 3, 4) be the given points.
Let the points of trisection be P and Q as shown in the below diagram
Then AP = PQ = QB = λ(say)
∴ PB = PQ + QP = 2λ
and AQ = AP + PQ = 2λ
⇒ AP : PB = λ : 2λ = 1 : 2
and AQ : QB = 2λ : λ = 2 : 1
So P divides AB internally in the ratio 1 : 2
So, by using the section formula \(P(x, y) = \bigg(\frac{mx_2+nx_1}{m+n} , \frac{my_2+ny_1}{m+n}\bigg) \) we have,
\(P(x, y) = \bigg(\frac{1\times(-3)+2\times1}{1+2} , \frac{1\times4+2\times(-2)}{1+2}\bigg) \) or \((\frac{-1}{ \ \ 3}, 0)\)
while Q divides AB internally in the ratio 2 : 1
So, by using the section formula \(P(x, y) = \bigg(\frac{mx_2+nx_1}{m+n} , \frac{my_2+ny_1}{m+n}\bigg) \) we have,
\(Q(x, y) = \bigg(\frac{2\times(-3)+1\times1}{2+1} , \frac{2\times4+1\times(-2)}{2+1}\bigg) \) or \((\frac{-5}{ \ \ 3}, 2)\)
Hence the points of trisection are \((\frac{-5}{ \ \ 3}, 2)\) and \((\frac{-1}{ \ \ 3}, 0)\) .
Hence, the correct answer is option 4)
