Direction: Read the following passage carefully and answer the given questions.
When I am dead, the chance that my bones will become fossilised is very remote. Bones decay away like the rest of our bodies unless a lot of very unlikely things happen. First of all, a dead body will not leave any permanent remains in the form of a fossil unless it happens to be covered up and thus protected from decay. This is fairly easy in the case of animals in the sea. Rivers are always carrying sediment out and depositing it, and tides and currents shift the sediments and cover up the bodies of dead animals. But even in this case it is by no means likely that the bones will be fossilised. Much more probably they will gradually dissolve away and leave no trace of themselves. Fossilisation is rather a complicated process. It involves the replacement of each particle of bone, as it dissolves away, by a less soluble and therefore more permanent substance. When that has happened, the chances are still very remote that anyone will find the fossil thousands or millions of years later. Our quarries and mines and cuttings are mere scratches on the surface of the earth. With terrestrial animals the chances of fossilisation are still less than marine ones. They are likely to die and decay without being covered up. It would be quite absurd to look with any great hopefulness for the fossil remains of the ancestors of any given animal. It would not simply be like looking for the proverbial pin in a hay stack, for then you are supposed to have the advantage of knowing that the pin is there. But in this case you are looking for a soluble pin in a hay stack in a thunderstorm, and you always have at the back of your mind the disconcerting thought that perhaps it is no longer there.
What is the meaning of the word 'disconcerting'?

Why are there fewer chances of fossilisation of the terrestrial animals?

Direction: Read the following passage carefully and answer the given questions.
Concentration is purely a mental process. It needs an inward turning of the mind. It is not a muscular exercise. You should not fight and wrestle with the mind violently. When you concentrate on any object, avoid tension anywhere in the body or mind. Think gently of the object in a continuous manner. Do not allow the mind to wander away.
Concentration can be done only if you are free from all distractions. A man whose mind is filled with passion and all sorts of fantastic desires can hardly concentrate on any object even for a second. His mind will be jumping like an old monkey. Japa of any mantra and Pranayama will steady the mind, remove tossing and increase the power of concentration. Too much physical exertion... will cause distraction of mind. Those who practise concentration must abandon these things.
Whatever work you do, do it with perfect concentration. Never leave the work without finishing it completely. You must train yourself to attend to the task at hand with perfect one-pointedness.... Reduction of wants and activities, renunciation of objects, solitude, silence, discipline of the senses, annihilation of lust and greed, control of anger, non-mixing with undesirable persons ... all these pave a long way in increasing the power of concentration.
You should have a real and intense thirst for God-realisation. Then all obstacles will be obviated. Concentration will be quite easy for you then.
