प्राचीन काल से देखा गया है कि संस्कृति और सभ्यता कभी नष्ट नहीं हुई हैं क्योंकि यह एक मानव जीवन का मुख्य अंग है। किन्तु दुर्दिन आने पर भी एथेंस की सांस्कृतिक और मानसिक प्रगति सर्वथा नष्ट न हुई। इसका प्रमाण वहां के दार्शनिक साक्रितीज (सुकरात) तथा प्लेटो (अफलातून) हैं। यूनान के राज्यों में परस्पर युद्ध होने के कारण सभी राज्य निर्बल हो गए। उनको पुनः संयुक्त करने वाला कोई न रहा। राजा का शासन केवल मकदूनिया, स्पार्टा और एथिटस में रह गया। अन्य राज्यों की दशा बहुत अव्यवस्थित हो गई। कहीं अत्याचारियों का, कहीं जनता का तो कहीं अभिज्ञातों का आधिपत्य हो गया। ऐसा कोई राज्य नहीं था जहाँ आपसी दल बंदियों के कारण लड़ाई-झगड़ा न होता हो। वैमनस्य की इतनी प्रचंड अग्नि भड़की कि मित्र, पुत्र, पिता, भ्राता, किसी को किसी का विश्वास न रहा। ऐसे अव्यवस्थित राज्यों का अधिक काल तक कायम रहना असंभव था। फारस के साम्राज्यों ने ग्री�� के राज्यों की आपस की लड़ाई को उत्तेजना देकर उन पर अपना ऐसा प्रभाव जमाना शुरू कर दिया कि ग्रीस में शांति और अशांति स्थापित करने की कुंजी उसके हाथ में चली गई।
