आमने-सामने पड़ते ही दिन और रात में हमेशा बहस शुरू हो जाती। दिन कहता काम ज़्यादा जरूरी है और रात कहती आराम। दोनों अपनी-अपनी दलीलें रखते, समझने और समझाने की कोशिश करते पर किसी भी नतीजे पर नहीं पहुँच पाते, जान नहीं पाते कि उन दोनों में आखिर कौन बड़ा है, गुणी है, सही है या ज्यादा महत्वपूर्ण है । हारकर दोनों अपने रचयिता के पास पहुँचे। भगवान ने दोनों की बातें बहुत ध्यान से सुनीं और कहा कि मुझे तो तुम दोनों का महत्व बिल्कुल बराबर का लगता है तभी तो मैंने तुम दोनों को ही बनाया और अपनी सृष्टि में बराबर का आधा-आधा समय दिया। गुण-अवगुण कुछ नहीं, एक ही पहलू के दो दृष्टिकोण हैं। हर अवगुण में गुण बनने की क्षमता होती है पर रात और दिन को उनकी बात समझ में न आई और वहीं पर फिर से उनमें वही तू-तू, मैं-मैं शुरू हो गई।

बहुत समय पहले की बात है जब सृष्टि की शुरुआत ही हुई थी। दिन और रात नाम के दो प्रेमी थे। दोनों में खूब गहरी पटती पर दोनों का स्वभाव बिल्कुल ही अलग-अलग था। रात सौंदर्य-प्रिय और आराम पसंद थी तो दिन कर्मठ और व्यावहारिक, रात को ज़्यादा काम करने से सख़्त नफ़रत थी और दिन काम करते न थकता था। रात आराम करना, सजना-सँवरना पसंद करती थी तो दिन हरदम दौड़ते भागते रहना। रात आराम से धीरे-धीरे बादलों की लटों को कभी मुँह पर से हटाती तो कभी वापस उन्हें फिर से अपने चेहरे पर डाल लेती। कभी आसमान के सारे तारों को पिरोकर अपनी पायल बना लेती तो कभी उन्हें वापस अपनी चूनर पर टाँक लेती। लेटी- लेटी घंटों बहती नदी में चुपचाप अपनी परछाई देखती रहती। कभी चंदा-सी पूरी खिल जाती तो कभी सिकुड़कर आधी हो जाती। दूसरी तरफ़ बौखलाया दिन लाल चेहरा लिए हाँफता और पसीना बहाता, हर काम जल्दी-जल्दी निपटाने की फिक्र में लगा रहता ।

आमने-सामने पड़ते ही दिन और रात में हमेशा बहस शुरू हो जाती। दिन कहता काम ज़्यादा जरूरी है और रात कहती आराम। दोनों अपनी-अपनी दलीलें रखते, समझने और समझाने की कोशिश करते पर किसी भी नतीजे पर नहीं पहुँच पाते, जान नहीं पाते कि उन दोनों में आखिर कौन बड़ा है, गुणी है, सही है या ज्यादा महत्वपूर्ण है । हारकर दोनों अपने रचयिता के पास पहुँचे। भगवान ने दोनों की बातें बहुत ध्यान से सुनीं और कहा कि मुझे तो तुम दोनों का महत्व बिल्कुल बराबर का लगता है तभी तो मैंने तुम दोनों को ही बनाया और अपनी सृष्टि में बराबर का आधा-आधा समय दिया। गुण-अवगुण कुछ नहीं, एक ही पहलू के दो दृष्टिकोण हैं। हर अवगुण में गुण बनने की क्षमता होती है पर रात और दिन को उनकी बात समझ में न आई और वहीं पर फिर से उनमें वही तू-तू, मैं-मैं शुरू हो गई।

हारकर भगवान ने समझाने की बजाय, थोड़े समय के लिए रात को दिन के उजाले वाली चादर दे दी और दिन को रात की अँधेरे वाली, ताकि दोनों रात और दिन बनकर खुद ही फ़ैसला कर सकें। एक दूसरे के मन में जाकर दूसरे का स्वभाव और ज़रूरतें समझ सकें। तकलीफ़ और खुशियाँ महसूस कर पाएँ। उस दिन से आजतक सुबह बनी रात जल्दी-जल्दी अपने सारे काम निपटाती है और रात बने दिन को आराम का महत्व समझ में आने लगा है। अब वह रात को निठल्ली और आलसी नहीं कहता बल्कि थकने पर खुद भी आराम करता है। अब तो दोनों में कोई बहस भी नहीं होती क्योंकि दोनों ही जान गए हैं कि अपनों में छोटा या बड़ा कुछ नहीं होता । इस दुनिया में कोई भी व्यक्ति कम या ज्यादा महत्वपूर्ण नहीं होता। सबके अपने-अपने काम हैं, अपनी-अपनी योग्यता और ज़रूरतें हैं। जीवन सुचारु और शांतिमय हो इसके लिए काम और आराम, दोनों का ही होना ज़रूरी है। आराम के बिना काम थक जाएगा और काम के बिना आराम परेशान हो जाएगा। अब दिन खुश-खुश सूरज के संग आराम से कर्मठता का संदेश देता है, जीवन पथ को उजागर करता है और रात चंदा की चाँदनी लेकर घर- घर जाती है, थकी-हारी दुनिया को सुख-शांति की नींद सुलाती है। हर शाम सुबह वे दोनों आज भी अपनी-अपनी चादर बदल लेते हैं, प्यार से गले मिलते हैं इसीलिए तो शायद दिन और रात के वह संधि-पल जिन्हें हम सुबह और शाम के नाम से जानते हैं आज भी सबसे ज्यादा सुखद और सुहाने लगते हैं।
