नीलकंठ पक्षी कर्नाटक का राज्य पक्षी है। ये यहां के बांदीपुर राष्ट्रीय उपवन में पाए जाते हैं। यह न केवल दक्षिण भारत में, बल्कि उत्तर पूर्व और अन्य कई प्रांतों में भी कीटनाशक पक्षी के रूप में लोकप्रिय है। हमारी जानी पहचानी चिड़िया घरेलू गौरैया का भी धान, कपास और मकई की खेती में अमूल्य योगदान होता है।

गौरैया और नीलकंठ दोनों को सांस्कृतिक तौर से भी महत्त्वपूर्ण माना जाता है। ये टिड्डी (लोकस्ट) के दुश्मन एवं किसानों के दोस्त होते हैं। 1958 से 1962 के बीच चीन की सरकार ने "फोर पेस्ट्स कैंपेन" के ज़रिये गौरैया का विनाश रचाया था। इसका नतीजा यह हुआ कि टिड्डियों की संख्या असामान्य मात्रा में बढ़ गई और यह विश्व के सबसे भयानक अकाल का कारण बन गया। यह एक सबक है जो हमें वर्तमान में याद रखना चाहिए। पिछले कई सालों से प्रदूषण के कारण गौरैया की संख्या का शहरी इलाकों में तेज़ी से हास हुआ है।
