Hidden from the world for decades, Baikonur Cosmodrome helped the Soviets launch their space outreach. Today, it is the world's primary spaceport-although its sense of secrecy remains. Behind the Iron Curtain, the world's first and most secretive space base, Baikonur, set up in the middle of a vast Central Asian desert, 2,600km south-east of Moscow and 1,300km from Kazakhstan's two main cities, Nur-Sultan and Almaty. After the retirement of NASA's Space Shuttle programme in 2011, Baikonur became the planet's only working launch site to the International Space Station (ISS). Now, 60 years after Gagarin's historic first flight, it remains the world's main spaceport.

But how and why did a dusty outpost in the wilds of western Kazakhstan become humanity's unlikely gateway to outer space?

To get to space, you need two things: to be far away from populated areas; and to be as close to the equator as possible to take advantage of the Earth's rotational speed, which is fastest at that contour of the planet. In the case of the US space programme, this meant the east coast of Florida, where the Kennedy Space Center was built. The Soviet Union, meanwhile, went to the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic in search of a remote locale within its borders that could accommodate long-range missile testing and rocket launches.

That this isolated, desolate land is the last place that astronauts stay before they leave Earth, and the first place they see when they return home, seems oddly fitting. NASA astronaut Scott Kelly described Baikonur as a kind of halfway house to space: "It seems more like it's a stepping stone to someplace that's further isolated. You know, one stony, remote place to a much more remote place."

Whatever its future as a working spaceport, the value of Baikonur as a piece of living history, Soviet nostalgia and human cultural heritage is indisputable. London, Paris, Beijing and Washington may all be the centres of empires past or present, but it was from a dusty railway stop in the middle of the Kazakh steppe that humanity took its first foray into the cosmos.

“रवींद्रनाथ ने इस भारतवर्ष को 'महामानव समुद्र' कहा है। विचित्र देश है यह! असुर आए, आर्य आए, शक आए, हूण आए, नाग आए, यक्ष आए, गंधर्व आए - न जाने कितनी मानव जातियाँ यहाँ आईं और आज के भारतवर्ष के बनाने में अपना हाथ लगा गईं। जिसे हम हिंदू रीति-नीति कहते हैं, वह अनेक आर्य और आर्येतर उपादानों का अद्भुत मिश्रण है। एक-एक पशु, एक-एक पक्षी न जाने कितनी स्मृतियों का भार लेकर हमारे सामने उपस्थित है। अशोक की भी अपनी स्मृति परंपरा है। आम की भी है, बकुल की है, चंपे की भी है। सब क्या हमें मालूम है? जितना मालूम है, उसी का अर्थ क्या स्पष्ट हो सका है? न जाने किस बुरे मुहूर्त में मनोजन्मा देवता ने शिव पर बाण फेंका था? शरीर जलकर राख हो गया और 'वामन पुराण' की गवाही पर हमें मालूम है कि उनका रत्नमय धनुष टूटकर खंड-खंड हो धरती पर गिर गया। जहाँ मूठ थी, वह स्थान रुक्म-मणि से बना था, वह टूटकर धरती पर गिरा और चंपे का फूल बन गया! हीरे का बना हुआ जो नाह-स्थान था, वह टूटकर गिरा और मौलसिरी के मनोहर पुष्पों में बदल गया! अच्छा ही हुआ। इंद्रनील मणियों का बना हुआ कोटि देश भी टूट गया और सुंदर पाटल पुष्पों में परिवर्तित हो गया। यह भी बुरा नहीं हुआ। लेकिन सबसे सुंदर बात यह हुई कि चंद्रकांत मणियों का बना हुआ मध्य देश टूटकर चमेली बन गया और विद्रुम की बनी निम्नतर कोटि बेला बन गई, स्वर्ग को जीतनेवाला कठोर धनुष, जो धरती पर गिरा तो कोमल फूलों में बदल गया! स्वर्गीय वस्तुएँ धरती से मिले बिना मनोहर नहीं होतीं !"

“किसी प्रकार सुख या आनंद देने वाली वस्तु के संबंध में मन की ऐसी स्थिति को जिसमें उस वस्तु के अभाव की भावना होते ही प्राप्ति, सान्निध्य या रक्षा की प्रबल इच्छा जग पड़े, लोभ कहते हैं। दूसरे की वस्तु का लोभ करके लोग उसे लेना चाहते हैं, अपनी वस्तु का लोभ करके लोग उसे देना या नष्ट होने देना नहीं चाहते। प्राप्य या प्राप्त सुख के अभाव या अभाव कल्पना के बिना लोभ की अभिव्यक्ति नहीं होती। अतः इसके सुखात्मक और दुखात्मक दोनों पक्ष हैं। जब लोभ अप्राप्य के लिए होता है तब तो दुःख स्पष्ट ही रहता है। प्राप्य के संबंध में दुःख का अंग निहित रहता है और अभाव के निश्चय या आशंका मात्र पर व्यक्त हो जाता है। कोई सुखद वस्तु पास में रहने पर भी इस इच्छा का बीज रहता है कि उसका अभाव न हो। पर अभाव का जब तक ध्यान नहीं होता तब तक इस वासना का कहीं पता नहीं रहता।"
